Chapter 12: They grow up so fast
5 months later
As Grissom was waking from a wonderful dream, he felt Sara's hands on his bare shoulders and her lips touching his cheeks before sliding down to his neck.
She seemed too focused on her task that she wasn't aware he was awake, so he cleared his throat and spoke softly. "Well good morning to you, dear."
Sara pulled back and moved her hand from his shoulders to cup his cheek with a bright smile. "It is definitely a good morning."
He was just about to speak, but she brings him into a passionate kiss while pushing on his shoulders so he would lie down on his back, then she moved so she was on top of him and started kissing his skin, going down, and when she got to his chest, he cleared his throat again before whispering. "I really hope you aren't starting something you can't finish."
She moved back up his body with her lips before looking at him with passion in her eyes when she got to his face. "Oh, I very much intend to finish what I started, Dr. Grissom."
From the moment their lips touched passionately again as her hand slid down his body, she was the one in control, he even tried to change their positions, but she wasn't having it, she was on a mission, and nothing was going to stop her from achieving it.
After a while, when she was finally back at his side in his arms, they were calming down, and when he could finally talk, he asked. "So, what was that all about?" He turned his head with a smile as he continued. "Not that I am complaining at all."
Sara ran her thumb up and down his chest and spoke softly. "I know it's been a few months since we've been this close, and you've been an amazing father and husband, taking up the slack when I'm too exhausted after work, even being patient with me. I just don't want you to feel you are being taken for granted."
They moved in bed so they were laying on their sides, then he cupped her cheek with a bright smile. "I know you don't take me for granted and you haven't been the only one that hasn't exactly been in the mood the last few months. We added another child to our already busy schedule, so of course our rhythm is a little out of sync."
She asked shyly. "Just in that way, right?"
He chuckled as he moved so he was above her now and replied with passion. "Yes, we are perfect." He leans down and kisses her before whispering. "You are perfect."
Sara shakes her head shyly. "Griss…"
But he cuts her off as he moved his hand down her arm. "You are, and you've been patient with me as well. Plus, those kids of ours are so lucky to have you as a mother."
He leans down again as his hand slipped under the sheet and whispered one more thing. "Now I think it's my turn to show you I don't take you for granted."
She gasped against his lips before he deepened the kiss, the passion between them once again igniting.
When they finally managed to get out of bed, Sara took a shower while Grissom made the coffee, then once she was in the kitchen, Grissom took a shower before joining her back in the kitchen.
Sara had just put the griddle on the counter when Grissom came up behind her, wrapped his arm around her waist and placed a kiss on her cheek.
She smiled, then closed her eyes as his hand slipped under her shirt at her stomach before she started speaking. "Now you better not start what you know we won't be able to finish."
She knew any second her son, or daughter will be interrupting this time.
Right as she said that they hear their daughter over the baby monitor as William ran into the room with excitement. "I get to go to school today, yeah!"
Grissom slid his hand from under her shirt and whispered in her ear. "Rain check, then."
She turned her head with a smile. "You can count on that, babe."
They kiss softly before Grissom stepped back so Sara could greet their son briefly then told him she had to go get his sister.
Once Sara was out of the room, Grissom turned around and smiled at his son, who was now sitting on the barstool at the counter with a smile on his face.
"Alright, buddy. I promised you a breakfast meal before your first day of school, so what will it be?"
"Mmm…Pancakes and eggs, please."
"You got it."
As he started to cook, he asked. "How did you sleep?"
"I slept ok daddy, I just can't wait to go to school."
"I know."
To his parents it felt like William was ready to go in July.
He paused his cooking for a moment as he looked back. "So, you're not nervous being in an older class?"
"Nope. I'm ready, daddy."
Grissom took a breath with a nod as he goes back to cooking. "Yes, you are, son."
As badly as Sara wanted to keep William home for as long as possible, Grissom seemed to have a harder time the last few days.
After a little bit of small talk while Grissom continued cooking, Sara walked back into the kitchen with Beth in her arms.
Grissom smiles over at his daughter. "Hi baby girl, today is a very special day for your brother, it's his first day of school."
She cooed with a smile, and Grissom continued like he was having a real conversation with her. "I know, right?" He leaned over and kissed her forehead before whispering. "And believe me, your time will come. But we are going to hold on to you for as long as possible."
As he pulled back so he could finish breakfast, Sara sighed as she held her daughter close and kissed her forehead. "Daddy would be correct on that one."
Eventually breakfast was done cooking, then they ate before Grissom spent some time with Beth while Sara got their son ready for school.
Once they left the house, and when they got to the front of the school, William was ready to jump out of the vehicle the moment Grissom stopped the vehicle, but he was stopped when Sara told him to wait a minute when her phone goes off and she answered it for video chatting.
"Hi Nicky, you almost missed him."
Sara moved the phone so William could see Nick and Sadie on it before Nick spoke with a smile. "Hey little man. Good luck on your first day of school."
After Sadie said the same thing, William smiled. "Thanks Uncle Nicky." He then looks at Sara. "Mommy, can we go now?"
They all chuckled before Sara moved the phone back to the front of her face and smiled. "As you can see, we have a very excited boy, we'll talk to you later, thanks for the call."
"Now problem and you got it."
Before they hung up, Grissom and Sara told Sadie to enjoy her first day of her being a 7th grader.
After the Grissom family got out of the vehicle, they headed for William's classroom, which was one for the first graders.
They greeted the teacher and some of the parents and students, then after they said bye to their son, they left the room with Beth.
As they were walking back to the vehicle, Sara does a sigh and Grissom smiled while wrapping his free arm around his wife's shoulders. "You know he's going to be ok, right?"
Sara nodded. "I know, I'm not sighing for him. I'm sighing because our little boy is just growing up too fast. I can't believe they already feel he's a 1st grader."
Grissom smirked as they stop at the vehicle. "Well, dear. I mean his mother did go to Harvard, and not only that, but was valedictorian her senior year at 16, so I think you..."
She cuts him off with a smirk. "You want to go there, well his father has a PhD, so there."
He chuckled as he opened the back door, so he could put Beth in her car seat. "Ok, so he gets those genes from the both of us."
"Yes." She sighed again. "But I guess that will serve him well in the long run."
After buckling their daughter in, he moved to shut the door before looking at his wife and cupping her cheek. "It really will, and we want only the best for him."
She nodded as they share a hug. "Yes, we do, I just wish..."
She trials off and he replied while moving his hand up and down her back. "I know, honey, me too." This time he sighed. "I guess I should admit I'm having a hard time myself."
As they pulled back, she replied with an eyebrow raise. "Really? You haven't shown it, but I guess I shouldn't be that surprised."
While he's gotten more open through the years, he was still good at hiding how feels sometimes.
He sighed again. "I just know how perceptive our son is, I didn't want to him to think he has to tamper down his excitement for the next phase of his life just because I'm struggling with it."
She nodded in agreement as she placed her hand top of his that was still on her cheek. "Yeah."
They took another moment before he spoke after clearing his throat. "Alright, I guess we better get you to work."
With it being their son's first day of school, he agreed to take her to work so they could take him together in one vehicle.
"I guess so."
They kiss softly then she moved towards the passenger side and gets in while he gets in the driver's seat before he starts the vehicle so he could take her to work.
5 years later
September, 2016
Grissom had just placed the last plate on the table while Sara was pulling the food out of the oven when the doorbell rang.
They looked at one another with smiles on their faces as they spoke at the same time.
"She's here."
Sara sets one of the lasagnas, which was a small vegetarian one, on the counter before her and Grissom headed to living room just as William, who was now 10 years old, opened the door.
"Sadie!" Exclaimed the young boy, which got the now 5-year-old Beth, who started school at the end of last month, up from playing with her toys on the floor and ran to the door to greet the now 17-year-old.
Sadie smiled and greeted the kids, telling them how big they've gotten, even though she just seen them last month on Grissom's birthday.
Once Sadie was inside the house, she smiled at Sara and Grissom as she walked up to them, then she gave Sara a hug first before giving Grissom one.
Then as they pulled back, Grissom asked. "How are you doing? How was the drive up here?"
Sadie smiled a little wider. "Not bad on both accounts." She then smirked. "But you guys should call my dad and console him, because if it was up to him, he and Catherine would have followed me up here."
About a year after living with Nick, Sadie started calling Nick dad, and it was probably the best moment of his life.
They smile, but Sara replied with sympathy. "I believe I know how he feels, I'm already dreading the count down on when my babies are college bound."
Sadie nodded with a chuckle. "Yeah, I get that, but I'm no more than two hours away, so he can visit me anytime he wants, I just want to settle in first."
They also understood that, so they nodded again, then Grissom spoke after clearing his throat. "Well thank you for joining us for dinner."
"Thank you for inviting me, Grissom." She then smirked. "Or should I start calling you Dr. or Professor Grissom?"
With Sadie going to UCLA, she made sure she got into one of Grissom's classes.
Grissom chuckled. "How about outside of the classroom, it's Grissom. But inside, professor will do. I would hate for the other students to think you get special treatment."
Sadie nodded with another smile. "You got it."
She then sighed after a moment, and Sara spoke softly, having a feeling on what the young woman was thinking. "It feels different, doesn't it?"
She nodded sadly. "It does, I expected Hank to be right by the door greeting me."
Sadly, the Grissom family had lost their loyal/lovable pooch during Sadie's last visit, and the family was still reeling from losing him.
Grissom placed a hand on Sadie's shoulder. "Just always remember you two had a special bond from the moment you met."
Sadie nodded with another smile, even though there was still sadness in her eyes. "I will always remember that, and I'll always remember him, he was a wonderful dog."
They nodded in agreement, then after moments pause, Sara announced to the kids that it was dinner time, so they all headed into the kitchen for dinner, where they enjoyed their meal with some good conversations, mostly Beth telling Sadie about school, and how much she loves it.
As they were finishing up, Sadie complimented the food before Grissom cleared his throat and asked. "And this is just a thought, but if you want, maybe we can set up a dinner gathering once a week."
Sadie smiled. "Really?"
"Yes. Now you don't have to say yes just to make us happy, we just..."
Sadie cuts Grissom off. "I would be happy to make dinner with you guys a weakly thing, just let me know what day you are thinking, and we'll go from there."
Once they were in agreement, Beth wanted Sadie to play with her, and Sara was about to tell her daughter that Sadie might have to leave to get settled in her dorm room now, but Sadie speaks with a smile before Sara could. "I would be happy to play with you for a little bit."
Beth shouted 'yeah!' as she got off her seat, grabbed Sadie's hand and 'dragged' her into the living room with William following.
Sara and Grissom chuckled before they started cleaning up, then after they were done, they headed towards the living room, but stopped in the doorway to watch the kids with smiles on their faces, then Sara looks at her husband and replied softly. "Well Dr. Grissom, I say we didn't do so bad."
He shook his head while cupping her cheek and replying just as softly. "No, we didn't Mrs. Grissom, and I can't wait to see where we go from here. I love you."
She smiled in return as she placed her hand on top of his that was still on her cheek. "I love you too, and I can't wait either, but I would still like to take my time."
He nodded with a smile before they kissed softly.
Once they pulled back, they held one another while watching their kids and Sadie together, thinking what led them here to this moment, and while there was heartache and wasn't smooth sailing for the most part, especially in the beginning of their relationship, they couldn't imagine building this life with anyone else.
