The sun rose over the horizon on an early September morning, 1915, when Susannah had woken up, ran across the hall and jumped on her parents bed and woke them up.
"Mommy, daddy, wake up. It's my first day of school"
"Julia, your daughter is awake." William says as he tries to wake up
She swats him on the arm, "our daughter is awake" as she sees Susannah jumping up and down so excited, "come here, my love"
Susannah drops into her mommy's arms and gives her a kiss on the cheek, "I don't want you to go to school."
"I have to though my mommy"
All Julia could is giggle, "yes you're right, my smart girl"
William finally wakes up, and gives Susannah a hug as well, "what are you excited to learn in school?"
"Mhm" she wonders as she places a finger on her chin
All Julia can do is giggle, as it reminds her of William's thinking look.
"Science and mathematics"
"Good ones. Now how about we get you dressed, while daddy makes us breakfast"
"Yes, mommy."
An hour later, the family was dressed and bellies full with a hearty breakfast, as William gave his little girl as kiss on the forehead, and gave Julia one on the lips, which made Susannah say, "gross" and left on his bike to work.
Since the school, Pope Francis was closer to the women's clinic, Julia decided she would drop Susannah off at school. A week before admission to the school, Julia admitted to William of how was skeptic she was about the school. Not, because of it being Catholic, she wanted Susannah to be raised in the Catholic faith and attend a Catholic school. But when they first saw it as a family, she had a vibe that made her anxious and nauseated. William assured her it was going to be ok, and she was just upset, because their little girl wasn't a baby anymore. After that, she knew he was right and let it go.
When they arrived at the school, they saw sister Sophie waiting outside, "mommy, let's stop here"
Julia leans down to her level, "is everything ok?"
"Yes, I want to be a big girl and go in the school by myself."
Julia giggled as she fixed Susannah's bow in her hair and dress, "my brave girl," and gave her a kiss on the forehead. "At 3:00, when school's over, either daddy and I will will pick you up"
Susannah nodded and gave her a big hug, "I love you, mommy"
"I love you, too, my love" as she kissed her again
"Susannah, are you ready to come in?" Asked sister Sophie
"I am" as she took the sister's hand and turned to Julia, and smiled
Julia smiles and nods at her, knowing she would be alright
It was 3:00, when William picked up Susannah from school. As she was coming out he noticed she was wearing her bow on her left hand, and was looking down at it, "Susannah?"
She looks up, "daddy." It looked like she had been crying
He leans down to her level, "are you ok? What happened to your hand?"
As he tried to check on it but she pulled back, "oh, I got it caught between a cupboard"
"Oh" he said but knew that's not what happened, "are you ok?"
"Yes. I just want to go home, daddy"
"Ok…" he said as he put on her helmet and helped her into his bicycle sidecar.
As he buckled her in, he asked, "did you like your first day of school? Did you meet any new children and become friends?"
"Yes and 2, Timothy and Madeline."
"That's nice." He said and rubbed his forehead nervously
She looked up to him, "daddy, I swear. I had a good day. I'm just tired. So stop being nervous and worried about me"
"I'm not sweetheart"
"Daddy, you always rub your forehead when you feel a certain emotion"
He smiles and rubs her back, "you're just like your mother" as he hops on his bicycle and they head home.
