SuperCoffee Returns
A/N kind of a sequel to one of my Some Girl chapters. Kara is in college, her and Alex work at this coffee shop as baristas. Apparently it's a great place to meet girls.
National City, Earth-36 - 2010
"Why don't you just say hi?" Alex said, licking the excess cream off a coffee stirrer. She was sitting on the counter because the coffee shop was empty and about to open. Kara was standing next to her cleaning the counter, and looking nervous because walking down the street in front of the shop, and would be coming in, in a matter of seconds, was Lena Luthor. A woman in Kara's science elective class. A woman Kara had been crushing on ever since the first day of said class. She came in twice a week and smiled politely as she ordered her black coffee and muffin. Alex rolled her eyes practically every time she had to serve her. But Kara thought that her smile was brighter than a yellow sun.
"Because... um... because..." Kara started and stopped, turning back to the coffee machine and giving it a quick once over.
"Chicken." Alex whispered before swiftly leaving the counter to open up the shop.
"Alex! Don't leave me." The bell above the coffee shop door rang out. Lena strolled up the counter, her heels clicking with every step. She had a handbag on her arm and a wicked smile deliciously playing on her lips. When she approached the counter she paused for a second to glance over the muffins. She picked a chocolate chip mini muffin and told Kara to put it in a bag for her. Kara tried desperately hard not to blush, putting on her most professional face and pushing her glasses up her nose.
"So how many times do I have to come in here before you'll say a word to me?" She asked curiously, putting a finger to her lips. The coffee machines whirred, Kara had nothing to do but wait patiently. She nodded at Lena and made an attempt at a nervous giggle. But said nothing. Awkward small talk wasn't her forte.
"She's probably too nervous to say something." Alex butted in, slurping her own drink and then walking past Kara and into the kitchen. The blonde stared after her, mouth agape.
"I-I I'm so sorry," she spluttered out. Turning around and willing the ground to swallow her.
"That's okay, it just adds to the mystery." Lena's confidence was mind-blowing. Kara hadn't known her to say more than a few courteous words of 'good morning' in previous encounters.
"So, do you come in here a lot?" Kara replied, trying to change the subject but failing enormously. She still didn't turn around, but instead put her hands on her hips.
The coffee machine started making a hissing noise, but was enough to indicate that it was broken. Lena's coffee would not be finished anytime soon. Great, now she'll never come back because she didn't even get what she ordered. Kara thought to herself as she ran into the kitchen.
"Alex?! The machine's stopped working! What am I supposed to do?" She ranted to her sister who crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow in reply.
"Go and talk to her whilst I fix it, you've probably just put something in that's not supposed to be there." She took a step forward, Kara still looked majorly distressed so she put a hand on her shoulder. "Go!"
"But I-"
"No buts. Go, now!"
Kara turned back around and scarpered back to the counter. Lena was standing there expectantly, probably wanting to eat her muffin. "I'm so so sorry, the coffee machine isn't working right now. My sister Alex is going to have a look at it but in the meantime, you can either wait for your coffee or just take the muffin to go. Again, my apologies." Kara managed to say all in one breath. Lena looked a little surprised but not offended. Kara looked down at her feet, waiting for Lena's inevitable exit but the woman didn't move.
"Well, I'm early for class and what's the point of the gym without coffee? I'll wait."
Kara looked up. "Okay, great." She said through gritted teeth. What was she supposed to do now? Make more awkward small talk? Lena moved over to the front of the shop and sat down, then pulled out her phone and started scrolling through her emails. Kara stood awkwardly behind the counter trying to smile, Alex working away behind, screwdriver gripped between her teeth.
It was another five minutes of awkward silence before Kara felt her phone vibrate in her pocket. Go and talk to her. It was from Alex. Kara looked up at her sister and gave her a glare. Then walked out from behind the counter. She took a deep breath before taking the remaining three steps between her and Lena. "Hi," she said anxiously, hovering around Lena's head because she wasn't sure whether to sit down or not.
"Hi." Lena replied.
"Can I sit here? Alex is great company usually but she keeps shoving me out of the way. Something about me being a distraction when she's trying to fix something." Kara had to keep reminding herself that Lena was just a person. Just a person that she could talk to, no need to be nervous. Then Lena looked up. Kara chewed on her bottom lip, she was looking at Lena's own lips and thinking about bending down and kissing her. But then Lena was speaking again.
"Yeah sure, I'll be glad of the company anyway. Especially when it's such good company." She elbowed Kara playfully like they were best friends. Kara thought to herself that she could get used to this. She sat down. They chatted for a few minutes whilst Alex tinkered around with the coffee machine, she had to get it working before the morning rush otherwise their boss would kill them. Or her, because Kara would smile nicely and get out of it. All sorts of spluttering noises were coming out of the machine until Alex managed to click something back into place and a stream of coffee spurted out of it in a gush. Her apron was soaked through. She let out a loud expression of anger. But when she looked over the counter, Kara and Lena were laughing about something. At least that was a bonus. Kara wouldn't be sulking later. She'd probably be anxiously texting away.
"It's working again." Alex declared, making Lena's drink because she doubted Kara would even listen if she called her over to do it. Lena looked over and gave her a thumbs up in reply, which she supposed was good enough. Then she packed up Lena's muffin and put the travel lid on her coffee. Lena paid and then waved goodbye to Kara before making for the sidewalk.
The door shut and Kara almost squealed. She turned round slowly to face Alex, a grin plastered all over her face. "Did. You. See. That?" She punctuated. Alex nodded and smirked.
"Seemed like you almost got the hang of that. My little gay heart is happy for you." Alex patted her heart warmly and gave Kara's shoulders a squeeze before turning back to the coffee machine. "Come on, it's almost nine, it'll get busy soon."
It wasn't until Lena turned her drink around that she saw the ornate black numbers on the side. She smiled to herself as she walked along the street, making a mental note to send Kara a text as soon as she got out of class.
