The air was hot and humid as he stepped out of the white rental car. He wanted to just turn around and fly back home because the whole thing made him anxious. He did not want to be there. Cars were honking everywhere and there was all kinds of people walking around. It was without a doubt so different from his small town.
He felt a firm hand on his shoulder, "What's with the grumpy ass look?" the man with the leather jacket said as he nudged him and laughed, "Cheer up champ."
Rick rolled his eyes at his bearded friend and neighbour, "Oh shut up Negan."
"You do look kind of grumpy for a guy who is supposed to renew his vows at the end of the week." Glenn pointed out from the other side of the car as he tossed his bag over his shoulder.
"I'm happy about that," Rick argued as he leaned against the car, "I ain't happy about all of this."
"Vegas baby!" Negan shouted so loud that people around them shot them curious looks. He flashed his perfect pearly whites and winked, "This is exactly what you need officer friendly."
Rick looked at the tall building they were going to be residing in. It seemed so over the top, but what else could you possibly expect from Negan who was responsible for this whole thing.
"Sir," The bellboy interrupted his toughts, "May I?" he pointed at the bag at his hand and Rick handed it to him with a thanks.
"How the hell did a poor bum like you afford this?" Daryl, who was wearing his worn leather jacket and shades finally hopped out of the car, "You still owe me fifty bucks from the last card game asshole."
"Your mama is a poor bum," Negan flicked Daryl's sunglasses with his finger to annoy him, "besides I paid zero dollars for this whole shabang."
Rick had to smile a little at the two of them. They were an odd pair of friends. Eventhough neither one of them would admit to being friends, that's exactly what they were under the ballbusting.
The bellboy gathered rest of their things and the valet took their rental. The four men walked inside the luxurious Hilton hotel. Glenn fought the urge to gasp at the lobby. It was so big, and nothing like he had ever seen before. His and Maggies hotel in Spain during their honeymoon would have looked like a joke next to this one. Thankfully love of his life wasn't big on these type of extravagant experiences. She enjoeyd a good cabin or a small interesting motel over all the marble and luxury.
Three of the men waited as Negan approached the reception desk.
"You sure he didn't rob a bank or something?" Daryl whispered to Rick.
"Nah'" He laughed back, "I would know."
"I guess all that talking he does finally came in handy." Glenn shrugged as he watched Negan walk back towards them with man who was rocking a very receiving hairline.
"Fella's this is Simon," Negan introduced the man to his friends, "the man who made all of this possible. The cupid behind it all."
"It was my pleasure," Simon looked at Negan with admiration, patting his shoulder, "This man, is going to make my son a star."
Glenn, Rick and Daryl stared at Negan, all of them smiling like idiots. Alarm bells were going off inside their minds. What on earth had he said to this poor man.
"Oh come on," Negan smirked, "It's up to Jacob. I'm just doing the groundwork."
Simon straightened his suit jacket and pulled four keycards from his pocket, "The business suite is all yours. Seven nights, and I know you gentlemen will take good care of it. If there is anything that you need, Negan has my number. I'm working here all week long."
Each men took their card catiously. Simon shook their hands and just like that they were staying in a five star hotel.
"You want to explain what just happened?" Rick turned to Negan, a bit hesitant. Not sure if he even wanted to know.
"I promised I will train his son the whole year and make sure he gets the scholarship he needs one day in the future. Plus he kind of owes me a favor for a thing," He explained like it was no big deal as he grabbed his friends shoulders, "So now smile and enjoy this vacation I gave you on a nice silver platter before the wives arrive and we have to behave again."
Rick stared back at him and gave a slow nod. He had known Negan for years and he still sometimes managed to get under his skin, but in the end he knew he meant well. He was a ride or die friend so to speak. He would go to the ends of the earth for the people he cared about and Rick appriciated his presence in his life because loyalty wasn't easy to find these days. He also had unbelievable luck, for a guy who had managed to screw up in many ways he always came out winning.
Their kids idolized him. Him and Lucille, were Judith's godparents. They adored her, and spoiled her rotten whenever they had the chance. She was probably five the first time she asked if she could move next door. Now she was a stubborn ten year old and she spent most of her days with them while he and Lori worked long shifts. Carl practically lived in their garage. It was Negan's man cave and Carl's favorite place to unwind. He never felt jealous for these amazing bonds Negan and Lucille had formed with Carl and Judith because he knew how hard it was for them when they found out they could not have children of their own.
The men walked towards the elevators. Glenn and Daryl were laughing and horsing around like little kids as they took in the experience of being in a place like this.
Rick rubbed his forehead, feeling a headache kick in. It had been a long time since he was away from home and away from work.
"Seriously though," Negan walked beside him, "I know this is out of your comfort zone, but I did this for you and Lori. You guys have been together for eighteen years. She deserves to come here and have something special. That woman has been putting up with your boring ass for so long."
He chuckled and stopped in front of the elevators,"I know, this is a big gift from you and it's not that I'm not grateful. I just wanted something simple. I don't need five nights out doing crazy stuff before my family comes here."
"Yes you do."
"No, I really don't"
"Rick, your way of having fun these days is mowing the lawn or buying a new brand of beef jerky," Negan was blunt like always, "I spent multiple hours between my wives legs so that she would make sure the girls were on board with this plan, so the least you could do is loosen up a little."
He frowned at the mental image and chuckeled back, "Isn't that all you do anyway?"
His friend smirked and pulled him in a hug, "You know me too well prick!"
"This is amazing!" Glenn hopped on the big sofa like a five year old and sighed deeply, "It's like a fluffy cloud you can just drift away in."
Negan laughed at him as he was pouring himself a glass of whiskey at the bar, "Drift away my man."
The suite was big. It had three big bedrooms with their own bathrooms, living room, and a bar. This was certainly very different than what they were used to in King's County. The big glass windows showed a scenery that was like a painting. All of Las Vegas was right there before their eyes. The lights, the noise, the city of sins in all of its glory.
"I'm gonna take a piss in one of those thousand dollar toilets." Daryl announced.
"You go do that," Negan sipped his whiskey and explained the plans he had for tonight, "So I made reservations for dinner at nine and after that we are heading to the Onyx."
"What's that?" Glenn asked curiosly as he flipped the channels while laying down and munching on the complimentary peanuts.
"A strip club."
Shocked, he dropped the remote, "No way. I can't go there. Maggie would kill me."
"Yeah, I don't think Lori would want me to-"
"You two need to stop acting like a bunch of pussies. This is Vegas! That means strippers! If our wives were here they would be all over those oiled up dudes who perform here. It's not a big deal!"
Daryl walked back into the living room, tucking at his belt and grunted, "What did I miss?"
"Negan wants to go to a strip club," Rick explained to him,"I don't think it's a good idea. Glenn agrees with me."
Glenn nodded at Rick, "Yeah, no strippers for me."
Daryl stopped, and looked at his friends, "Stop being babies."
"Thank you!" Negan pointed at Daryl excitedly, "Daryl boy gets it. It's not a big deal. We go there, make it rain, see some rubber titties and we are out."
"Seriously you want to go?" Rick asked Daryl, shocked that he was actually siding with Negan.
He shrugged and took a glass of whiskey Negan handed to him, "I don't see what the problem is. Live a little."
Rick looked at his friends and sighed, "Fine, but we are out of there if it gets crazy."
Glenn exhaled deeply, "Fuck my life."
The dinner was highlight of the day. Rick had probably never eaten a rib that was so perfectly cooked. He leaned back in his chair and wondered would anybody see if he unbuttoned one of the buttons on his navy blue dress shirt. The place was fancy so he opted not to do that right there. The men sat in a table for four and were kicking back, laughing and sipping very expensive drinks.
It was a busy night for sure at the Hilton. The restaurant was packed.
"I wanna make a toast," Negan raised his glass of wine and stood up, he was already a little tipsy, "my boy Ricky dicky Grimes."
The other men burst out laughing.
Negan cleared his throat, "Fourteen long years ago, me and my sexy ass wive moved next to this righteous asshole. I thank the universe everyday for that because we got great friends in you and Lori. I will never forget what Lori did for my Lucille. Most importantly though we get to be a part of Carl's and Jude's lives and see them grow. That's so fucking special. Those kids are everything to us. So thank you for buying a equally shitty house so we ended up together."
Rick got up from his seat immidately and gave Negan a hug, "Thank you."
The mention of his kids always got him. He had been doing long shifts for years as a Sheriff, having neighbours who gladly helped them if they asked was a life saver, but it worked both ways. Lori had been a stay at home mom when Lucille was diagnosed with cancer. She became a vital part in her care and it inspired her to educate herself to be a nurse. So she worked long hours at the hospital just like him at the station.
"It's crazy though, we've known each other for so long," Glenn though back, "I think Carl was like six when Maggie met Lori at work."
"Yeah," Rick sipped his beer when he sat back down next to Glenn, "And in three months he turns sixteen."
"Thats sick," Negan shook his head, "I remember him driving those little race cars on our steps and he would get super pissed if somebody tried to walk there."
"Yeah it seems like a lifetime ago." Rick wondered out loud, his southern accent coming through more as the alcohol kicked in, "Now he is just pissed' for no reason at all."
"No, he is not," Negan protested, "He is a good kid. You are just... uptight sometimes."
Daryl and Glenn looked at each other, knowing well this could go into the wrong direction.
"What?" Rick looked at the man across from him with a frown, "I am trying to make sure Carl doesn't get involved in the wrong crowd, so he can't do whatever he likes."
"Like last weekend when you assumed he was drunk and smoked pot because he was fifteen minutes late from his curfew," Negan challenged him, "Come on now. You know that is ridiculous."
"He walked funny." Rick defended himself.
Daryl had to break it to him, "Man you were doin' all kinds of shit at that age. I remember. Give the kid a break."
"Yeah, get the stick out of your ass once in awhile." Negan added.
"Since when did you two start agreeing on stuff?" Rick eyed the men suspiciously and joked, "Daryl, he got something on you? You know you can tell me."
Negan and Daryl laughed loudly.
"They are just equally drunk." Glenn chuckled.
"I really don't think this is a good idea," Rick muttered as they sat down, "I feel like a dirty old man."
"Tell me about it," Glenn muttered back, "Why don't we just bail?"
"Nobody is going anywhere," Negan grabbed both of their shoulders from behind, giving them a firm squeeze, "Just enjoy the show."
The club was noisy and big, it smelled funny and Rick couldn't stop the Sheriff inside him to quiet down. He saw possible abuse, drugs, and everything in between. All the girls they walked past looked so young and he could only imagine Judith ending up in a place like this. It made his stomach turn. Maybe he was wired differently, but he found no pleasure or interest in watching these girls undress themselves.
Glenn beside him looked petrived as someone took the stage in front of them and another girl approached him from the side. He looked like he wanted to melt into his chair. Rick chuckled at him. Negan was yelling like always and whistling at the performer. He reeked of whiskey.
Daryl still stood by the bar where he left to get another beer, he was talking to someone which was unusual for him. Usually he would just sit with his friends and distance himself from new people. He was waving his hands around and trying to communicate to the woman. The music was probably so loud they couldn't hear each other.
All of a sudden a sequined pink bra fell on his lap. He quickly swatted it away like it was something dirty and got up. Yep, this was definitely not his scene.
"Oh Come on!" Negan rushed after him, leaving Glenn behind who was innocently chatting about comic books to the two strippers who were trying to get him to loosen up his wallet.
"I am not staying." Rick yelled at him so that he could hear him while he walked towards the exit, "This is not what I want to do, okay?"
"What? You can't for once in your life drop the Sheriff's hat? Have some fun?" He spat back.
"I can go to a regular bar, a club, whatever, but not this," Rick stopped to look at him, his tone serious, "This is not me."
Negan knew when Rick was done with his bullshit. There was no use in arguing with him, the man was stubborn and there was nothing he could say to change his mind, "Fine," he waved his hands dramatically in retreat and handed him the last bills from his pocket, "You get rid of these then."
Rick looked at the two fifty dollar bills on his hand as Negan went outside to smoke and probably harass strangers with his loud mouth. Daryl was still by the bar, with the same woman he had seen him with. They were on the other end, so he decided go get him and then help poor Glenn who was swarmed by strippers. Somehow he felt like a babysitter which wasn't what he signed up for.
Rick moved cautiously as he tried to reach the other end of the bar. He squeezed the money in his hand tightly, and with that, decided to humor Negan. He would never let it go if he came out with the bills in his own pocket. After all, these girls were working there and this was meant for them. He slowed his pace and tried to find someone who was alone, because he did not want to seem like a douchebag who just came in to drop some cash while they were already handling business with someone else. Then he saw her. She wasn't wearing the typical dancing attire, but clearly everything about her just made him uncomfortable in a good way. It was not like he could not appriciate a attractive woman when he saw one because he was married, he certainly could. Like this woman, she seemed confident and just full of energy, she was smiling and probably enjoying her shift. She was wearing a very tight red dress that complimented her figure amazingly, but nothing was hanging out.
So maybe she working the bar, he figured. She had long brown dreads that were half up and golden earrings dangled from her ears. She looked a bit older than the other girls, but still fairly young. Rick decided not to over think it like he did everything else. He approached her confidently. When he came closer he could really appreciate her face and the beauty she truly was. Her dark skin glistened under the club lights, The woman with the big brown eyes and long lashes looked at him with raised brows, "Can I help you?"
Rick swallowed and cleared his throat, "This is for you."
He handed her the cash and she still looked at him like he was crazy.
"I don't need any services, I just saw you and wanted to give you these because I'm leaving and I feel bad about not spending any money on y'all-"
"Excuse me?" She stopped him and stared him down in a way no woman had done before. She was still holding the money and seemed to be in disbelief.
Rick turned red, he felt anxious as he stared right back, defending himself, "Yeah, you know I don't have any problems with your work or anything' it's just not for me."
Daryl suddenly appeared behind the woman, his friend was signaling for Rick to stop. Daryl waved his hands and mouthed "stop" repeatedly.
Rick looked at him confused, furrowing his brows just thinking Daryl must have been really drunk.
"You think I work here?" Her tone was light, like she was joking.
Daryl was still waving behind her.
He finally answered hesitantly, "Yes?"
He did not have any time to react when she punched him. For a woman that small she sure could throw a goob, solid punch in the eye. Without a word she also threw the money back at him before storming out of the club. It happened in a blur.
Rick held his face, confused, but also amazed how she managed to almost knock him unconscious with one swing.
"Man," Daryl walked up to him and showed him his signal, "This means stop."
The bouncers were walking towards them so Daryl decided to grab him and drag him out before there was problems. Negan was leaning against the building and smoking a cigarette when he saw Rick who was now bleeding from his brow.
"What the hell happened?" He was concerned and alarmed at the sight of his friend.
Rick could feel the headache from earlier returning as the throbbing from the punch set in. Daryl walked out with the woman he had been talking to earlier. She had a tissue in her hand and handed it to Rick.
"Thanks." Rick nodded at her, a little embarrassed.
She used sign language to say something to him and he could not understand, but imagined she said something along the lines of no problem.
"This is Connie," Daryl introduced the woman next to him, "She lost her friends in there and the workers didn't understand her, so I tried helping her."
She was wearing a deep green halterneck dress and a very genuine smile. Her curly hair was in a pony. She took out a notepad and a pen from her expensive looking purse. She wrote something quickly and handed it to Daryl to read.
"She says, I did not find my friends, but you did."
Connie pointed at Rick and signed, "sorry"
Rick smiled back awkwardly, "She is your friend?."
Connie nodded.
"I'm hella' confused, can someone tell me what the hell is going on?" Negan asked and looked at Connie, "Where is the guy who did this? Was it someone from your group? Is he still inside?"
Connie and Daryl looked at each other and laughed.
At the same second Glenn came running from the door, "you guys!"
Rick held the tissue to his bloody brow and looked at Glenn who just rushed past him and didn't even pay attention to his injury. Apparently he had something more important in mind.
"You guys, will not believe this," He was so out of breath, "This girl, one of the strippers," he breathed heavy, "promised to sell me one of the original Daredevil comics from like the seventies! "
Rick sighed.
This was going to be a long trip.
