Chapter 4
Kira closed her eyes as she played the chords, feeling the music washing over her as she thought about what was going through her head, trying to find words to describe what she was feeling.
"Headphones in,
I'm walking past the hotel bar on fifth
Where we got drunk and had that argument
The one that meant, we had nothing left
I'm a mess
I go to sleep with my phone on my chest
Just in case you send one more late night text
the one that says, let's forgive and forget.
Somehow I know that you're thinking of me
In a half made bed, waking up alone
When I open my eyes,
Somehow I know that you're thinking of me
When it's 2 am, I'm stumbling home.
In the back of my mind
Somehow I know that you're thinking of me
At the same time
At the same time
At the same time."
Kira stopped playing suddenly, pulling her left hand away from her guitar and massaging her fingers, trying to get the tingling to go away and massage out the cramp that was threatening to appear.
"That's good." A voice said, making Kira jump as she looked up to see Tanya stood on the other side of the glass. "Is that the music you've been trying to write lyrics for?"
"Yeah. Thought it'd fit." She replied, quickly writing down the words she had sung, frowning as she did. "Is my time up?"
"No, you still have the booth for another hour. But I was hoping we could talk." She said, walking into the room to talk to Kira. "What happened the other day?" Kira gave her a small smile as she held her wrist up, drawing Tanya's attention to the silver bracelet and yellow gem.
"We got our powers back." She said, making Tanya's eyes widen. "And then Zeltrax came back."
"You didn't fight, did you?" She asked with a frown, only to groan as Kira stayed silent. "Kira! You've just had chemo!"
"Tanya, I was fine." She said with a slight smile. "It was like the power was protecting my body from the cancer while I was morphed. Admittedly I had no energy as soon as I demorphed, but that didn't last for long."
"Kira, you can't jump back into it." She said with a frown. "Let me talk to Tommy. Maybe you can help them from the sidelines."
"No. Do not call Tommy." She snapped, making Tanya sigh.
"Kira, I get that you were trying to protect him when you left, but this is different." She said, making Kira stand up.
"I said no Tanya." She snapped. "This is my health and my life. I decide who knows and who doesn't." She walked out of the studio, making Tanya sigh. She walked out of the studio and sat in her yellow mini with a sigh, only to groan when her bracelet beeped. "Yes?" She answered, not bothering to hide the frustration in her voice.
"Kira? Are you alright?" Conner asked, making her close her eyes for a moment before answering.
"Fine. Long day." She replied. "Was there a reason for this?"
"Can you meet me at the beach?" He asked, making her frown. "There was an energy spike and no one else is answering their communicator."
"I'll meet you there." She said as she quickly started her car and drove as fast as she could to the beach. She jumped out and ran to where she could see Conner with a scanner in his hand. "Hey, what's going on?"
"I don't know." He answered, looking up as she walked over. "There was some sort of energy burst from here, but I don't know what it was." Kira started to look around and then froze, tapping Conner on the shoulder.
"I think I found it." She said, pointing to a rock formation on the beach. Conner looked up and froze as he saw Tyrannodrones climbing over the rocks and moving towards them.
"Great. These guys are back." He grumbled before looking at Kira. "You ready for this?"
"Do I have a choice?" She replied sarcastically as they slipped into fighting stances.
"I guess not." He replied. They split up and started to fight the Tyrannodrones, both trying to get an advantage over the reptiles.
"Tanya is going to kill me." Kira muttered and she ducked under a swing. She tried to spin around a drone, only to be grabbed and thrown to the ground. "Did these things get stronger?" She was about to kick one when she was suddenly thrown into Conner, sending both of them to the ground. "Conner, cover your ears." She snapped as they stood up. He did as she said and she let out a Ptera scream, sending the Tyrannodrones flying backwards.
"They're too strong." Conner said as they stood together, Kira breathing slightly heavier. "We need to morph. You ready?"
"Ready." She replied as they flicked their wrists to make their morphers appear.
"Dino Thunder! Power up! Ha!" Kira smiled as she felt her energy return as she morphed. They began fighting the Tyrannodrones with renewed energy and strength, taking them down easier now that they were morphed. Soon, they were stood side by side, preparing to fight again when a portal opened and they left.
"What was that all about?" Kira asked as Conner walked over to where the drones appeared on the rock.
"I think there's something on this rock." He replied as they both demorphed. He bent down and picked something up, turning it over in his hand. "I think they were looking for this. Whatever it is." He said as he stood up and turned to look at Kira. "Kira?" He frowned as he noticed that her breathing was quite heavy and all the colour had drained from her face. He was about to ask her if she was alright, when he saw her eyes roll into the back of her head and close as her legs gave way. "Kira!" He yelled, using his Tyranno speed to run to her and catch her in his arms before she hit the ground.

Kira became aware of a beeping near her head as she came to, subconsciously noticing that it was slightly quicker than it should have been. She groaned as she opened her eyes, noticing a movement on her right as she did.
"Kira?" A voice asked as a hand grabbed her hand. She opened her eyes fully and saw Conner next to her, a look of worry on his face. She looked around and registered that she was lying in a hospital bed, the beeping coming from the heart monitor next to her.
"Conner? What happened?" She groaned as she tried to sit up. Conner grabbed the remote to her bed and raised the back for her, lifting her into a seated position.
"You passed out on the beach. I didn't know what to do so I brought you here. They looked you over and did some tests before bringing you to this ward." He said with a frown as he sat down in the chair next to the bed.
"Has anyone said anything?" She asked as she looked around. She noticed that she was in her own room, and knew from the view out of the window which ward she was on.
"Someone mentioned that they didn't like how fast your heart rate is, but that's it." He replied, making her nod. "Kira, what happened?"
"I wasn't expecting to see you back so soon, Kira." A voice said as the door opened and a nurse walked in, pushing a trolly in front of her.
"Hi Sarah." She replied, making Conner look at her with a deep frown. "What's going on?"
"Well, it looks like your Haemoglobin levels are half of what they should be, which explains the fast heart rate. The doctor wants you to have two units of blood before you leave." She said. Conner noticed the bag of blood on top of the trolly. "Can you take your jacket off? I need to get to your line." Kira nodded and took her jacket off, leaving her in a yellow tank top. Conner frowned at the sight of a bandage on her left arm, only to sit back in shock as the nurse took the bandage off to reveal two plastic tubes coming out of her arm. The nurse quickly connected the bag of blood to one of the tubes and set up the pump at the side of the bed. "Right, I'll be back in two hours. Press the call button if you need anything."
"Thanks Sarah." Kira replied as she watched her leave the room before looking at Conner. "I'm going to guess that you have some questions."
"Some? More like a million." He said. She could see his eyes filled with worry and concern as he looked at the bag connected to her. "What is that in your arm?"
"It's called a PICC line." She said, lifting her arm slightly. "It goes into my vein in my arm and ends somewhere near my heart. It means I'm not getting needles going into me constantly."
"Why do you have it? And how do you know that nurse?" He asked, making her sigh.
"Because I've been coming here pretty much twice a week for four months." She said, making his eyes widen.
"Why? Kira, what is going on?" He asked. He watched as she closed her eyes for a moment before looking at him with a small smile and sad eyes.
"Promise me that what I'm about to tell you will stay between us?" She asked, making him nod. "I have Cancer."
"What?" He breathed, shock flowing through him.
"I found out 4 months ago. They found it early, and everyone seems pretty confident that it's curable. I've been coming here for chemo and blood tests a lot. That's why I have the PICC line. It makes it safer for the chemo and easier to take blood for tests." She replied, looking down at her lap. "That's why my blood levels are so low and why I passed out. The cancer I have is a type of blood cancer called Lymphoma. The chemo basically attacks my blood cells. When I morph, I feel normal. It's almost like the power is protecting me while morphed. When I power down, it hits me like a ton of bricks and my energy disappears."
"Does Tommy know?" He asked, making her wince. He stayed silent for a moment as he connected the dots. "You broke up with him four months ago. You wanted to hide this from him?"
"I knew that if I stayed, he would have given up everything to take care of me. I couldn't let him do that. It's bad enough that my life gets ruined by all of this. There was no way I was going to let it ruin his as well." She said, making him sigh.
"Kira, you should have told him. You should have told all of us." He said, leaning forward and holding her hand. "You shouldn't have gone through this alone."
"I didn't want any of you to see me like this. Especially Tommy." She replied, looking up so Conner could see the tears in her eyes. "I have one round of chemo left, and then tests to see if it all worked. I was planning on telling him then. And hoping that I didn't screw up too badly with him."
"Kira, I'm pretty sure you could destroy his fossil collection and he'd still take you back." Conner said with a smile, making her laugh. "I won't lie, you did hurt him. But I'm pretty sure he'll be more forgiving when he understands why you did it. And he will probably still be angry that you didn't tell him."
"I know." She replied with a sigh. Conner watched her for a moment before looking down, knowing she wouldn't like what he was about to say.
"Kira, maybe you should take it easy for a while." He said, making her frown. "I know you said that you feel good when you're morphed, but I've just seen what happens when all of it comes rushing back. Maybe you should avoid fighting unless we absolutely need you."
"No." She said, looking away. "I can't just sit on the side lines."
"I'm not asking you to." Conner replied, making her look up. "We don't know what Zeltrax wants and why he's come back. Let us do the fighting for now, and you figure out what he is here for." She sighed but didn't respond, and Conner took that to mean she agreed. "Right, since you're a regular visitor here, where's the good food?" Kira laughed, and for the first time in 4 months, it wasn't forced.
So, now Conner knows!
