Navi

In the vast, deep forest of Hyrule... Long have I served as the guardian spirit... I am known as the Deku Tree...

The children of the forest, the Kokiri, live here with me. Each Kokiri has his or her own guardian fairy. However, there is one boy who does not have a fairy.

Link slept without blankets, chest and hands down on his bed, head sideways. Link sometimes shifted, then he shivered. "Hih-hih-hih-huhh-huhh, hih-hih-hih-hrrh-hrrh..." Turning his head, his body twitched once. The strange dream about the castle gradually returned...

Nighttime thunder rumbled, clanking reverberating as a drawbridge descended—behind the noisy mass, a white horse neighed, galloping down a street.

Link looked up, rain pattering upon his face. The drawbridge went over the river, heavily landing before Link, a blue fairy flying around him.

The galloping white horse approached. Link stood to the side, watching the white horse run past him. A veiled woman in blue rode the horse. Sitting in front of her, a girl dressed in white and purple, wearing a matching mitre. The girl turned her head, blue eyes wide, watching Link.

Link's spine tingled. He looked back and reared—a red-eyed black stallion neighed, mane red, front hooves in the air. The dark rider, an immense redhead man armored in black, arrogantly stared with amber eyes. Front teeth visible, he looked over, raising his hand at a terrified boy...

"Navi... Navi where art thou? Come hither..."

A blue fairy nervously emerged behind shrubbery, PEEK. "Great Deku Tree?" The fairy flew over the bush. "Great Deku Tree, hang in there!" She flew to the guardian, her aura continuously chirruping.

The Deku Tree's hull rumbled. "Na...vi...? An evil thing... Inside me... I can't move... At all..."

The blue fairy hovered before the Deku Tree.

"Oh, Navi the fairy... Listen to my words, the words of the Deku Tree... Dost though sense it? The climate of evil descending upon this realm... Malevolent forces even now are mustering to attack our land of Hyrule..."

Without speaking, Navi slowly bobbed mid-air, listening worriedly.

"For so long, the Kokiri Forest, the source of life, has stood as a barrier, deterring outsiders and maintaining the order of the world... But...before this tremendous evil power, even my power is as nothing...

Navi attentively hovered. "Great Deku Tree, what should I do?"

"It seems the time has come for the boy without a fairy to begin his journey... The youth whose destiny it is to lead Hyrule to the path of justice and truth... Navi...go now! Find our young friend and guide him to me... I do not have much time left. Fly, Navi, Fly! The fate of the forest, nay, the world, depends upon thee!" His wooden body groaned, as if something big moved within. "The forest... Danger... The boy without a fairy... Bring him to me. Go, Navi!"

Navi looked away and departed. She swooped, briefly flying along the ground then into the pathway amid cliffs, swerving at each turn. Up ahead, Mido stood, hands on his sides, as if unhappy to see her. She flew between his legs then arise, getting a view of the village.

She turned and flew across the village. A Kokiri girl wearing a headband was sitting on projecting red roofing, one leg over the other, her hands down to the sides. She watched the flying fairy, her own fairy not reacting.

Navi slowed down, looking back. "Hello!" She flew on, passing another girl wearing a headband, who didn't bother helping a nearby boy trying to pick up a large stone. Navi slowed down by him. His fairy didn't help him, either. "Hey!" Navi called, getting no reaction.

Flying onward, Navi soon stopped, looking around. A third girl wearing a headband, arms apart and back, stared curiously at the blue fairy. Navi did not react, though. She looked to the left and nodded. She zoomed forth, soaring full speed ahead—boinggg! "Nyahh!" She had collided with an immense trellis.

Briefly stunned, Navi shook her head. She flew in-between the poles. A home with a balcony came into view, accessible via ladder...

Down below, Mido stood underneath Link's House, cleaver-like saw in hand. How he got there before Navi was anybody's guess, his character quite energetic. He raised his tool, A Kokiri Saw. "With this I'm gonna make a hole next to Link's bed. Covering his mouth, he snickered. "When he gets up in the morning... HEE HEE HEE." He fantasized Link stepping out his home, YAAAWN. Then falling down the hole. AGH!

Grinning impishly, Mido climbed the back of the ladder, RASP RASP.

Navi flew up past him, some vines hanging down the right side of the balcony, two mushrooms growing in the left corner by the home. A curtain, tied to the right, served as a door.

"RASP RASP," Mido said from outside for some reason.

In Navi flew... To the sides, some long-hafted tools upright against the wall and a stack of thatch. A few baskets and some supplies here and there. A small table with a big bowl of apples at one side, a decent wash basin and mirror at the other.

Navi went across the humble dwelling, Link asleep front down, sometimes slightly shuffling. "Hello, Link! Wake up! The Great Deku Tree wants to talk to you! Link, get up!"

...

...

...

Link moved a little, head turning away.

Navi flew up and down, aura whizzing. "Hey! C'mon! Can Hyrule's destiny really depend on such a lazy boy?"

He moved a little again, Navi soon stopping her frantic movement.

Link pushed himself off his bed. "Ihh, ehhhihh..." Once on his hands and knees, then on both knees, he rubbed his face. "Ahhhih." He looked at Navi, then crawled over until his legs were off his bed, found a nice spot to sit, and put his hands on his lap.

"You finally woke up! I'm Navi the fairy! The Great Deku Tree asked me to be your partner from now on! Nice to meet you! The Great Deku Tree has summoned you! So let's get going, right now!"

He nodded, then pushed himself off the bed, taking a few steps—he turned around, sleepily pulling a blanket and pillow from under his bed, then lied back down. He cocooned himself, making himself comfy.

Navi seethed for a few seconds. SWIP! She flew close to his head. "Link... Link! Wake up, Link!"

"Wake up!"

JOLT

Link sat up, eyes big, body stiff. Eyes shut, he rubbed his cheek. "Huh...?" He looked over. !

She calmed down. "I'm Navi. The Great Deku Tree sent me."

Link stared, mesmerized, mouth open. "A... Fairy..."

"Ya..." Navi replied.

"YAHOO!" Link charged out of bed, arms straight out, mouth open, totally demented—completely out of character. "I finally got a fairy!"

TUMP! TUMP! TUMP!

Navi flew away. "D-Don't touch me!"

Link somewhat obeyed, aggressively stomping out his home. "All right! I'm gonna go brag to Mido!" He abruptly paused, hesitating. Returning to normal, Link calmly stepped out his home, morning sunlight beaming upon him, as if welcoming him to Kokiri Forest. Forest fae and spirits flew around calmly, their lively presence decorating the air.

Someone ran toward Link's home—Saria. The green-haired girl kept her chin up, blue eyes eagerly waiting for her friend. She stopped, raising her arm, smiling big. "Yahoo! Hi Link!"

RASP PLOK. Someone sawed a circular hole through the balcony...

Link stepped forth—fell down the hole, legs forwards, arms apart, someone's fairy flying away to avoid being squashed.

W

HOMP!

Link's bottom landed atop Mido, his saw flicked away from impact.

Mido was flattened underneath Link, tongue out. "Ugh."

Link looked over, first seeing his simple carving of himself fighting a dragon and then noticing Mido under him. "Huh? Mido? What are you doing here?"

Lower lip widened, Mido's forehead vein throbbed. "What's it to you?! Never mind! Get off!" Mido noticed a fern weaken before his eyes. Drooop...

Link stood but then knelt by some ferns. "The plants are wilting..."

Mido forgot about pain. "Th-The trees, too! I've never seen anything like this before!"

Navi rang aloud. "Something evil has come into the forest! The Great Deku Tree is in trouble! Link, you've gotta hurry!"

Link worriedly turned his head, Mido slightly bending forwards, finger over his mouth, a sweatdrop leaking down his forehead. Link looked at Mido, wondering why he was so worried. Link then noticed that Saria had walked over, Mido frozen. Hands on her hips, Saria just glared. Mido and his fairy went off without saying anything, Saria and her fairy watching them go.

Saria looked at Link, returning to her pleasant demeanor, one arm slightly raised. "Wow! A fairy! Finally, a fairy came to you, Link!" She put her hands to her cheeks, warmly laughing. "Wow!" Smiling big, she lowered her arms. "That's great news! I'm so happy for you! Now you're a true Kokiri, Link!" Her warmhearted nature was so genuine.

Link smiled. "And I was summoned by the Great Deku Tree!"

"Is that right? The Great Deku Tree has summoned you? It's quite an honor to talk to the Great Deku Tree! I'll wait for you here. Get going! Go see the Great Deku Tree!" She clasped her hands behind her back, slowly swaying while slightly lifting one foot after the other. She watched Link scurry off...the wrong way.

After a few seconds, Link skittered. Oops, wrong way...

"Hey!" Navi exclaimed, hovering in front of Link's face. "The Great Deku Tree has summoned you! Please come with me!"

They headed towards the Great Deku Tree, going underneath a suspension bridge, then past a home with a boy trying to pull grass from the ground. Up ahead, a pond with a small island, dwellings at either direction. The pond steamed into another pond further south-east. Link jumped onto the small island, ran across, and then leapt to the other side of the pond.

Mido stood in the path, knees bent, hands on his sides, chest up. He raised an opened hand in Link's way. "Hey you! Mr. No Fairy! What's your business with the Great Deku Tree? Without a fairy, you're not even a real man!"

Puzzled, Link just stared.

Mido put both hands on his hips, cocking his head. "What?!" Hands behind his back, he bent forwards, taking a closer look. "You've got a fairy?!"

"You saw me flying through here a while ago," Navi reminded. "The Great Deku Tree summoned Link!"

"Say what? The Great Deku Tree actually summoned you?" Mido needed a second. "Whaaaaaaa?! Why would he summon you and not the great Mido?" His fairy blocked Navi, her wings wilting from disappointment. She flew into Link's hat.

Link glared, wondering if she should pounce on Mido or not. Given the dire situation of the Great Deku Tree and his silence, it would be disrespectful.

Mido lifted then swung his arms down. "This isn't funny..." He turned his head, pouting, angrily tapping his foot into the ground. "I don't believe it! You aren't even fully equipped yet! How do you think you're going to help the Great Deku without both a sword and shield ready?"

Link frowned. "You don't have either, either..."

"What? You're right. I don't I have my equipment ready, but... If you want to pass, through here, you should at least equip a sword and shield! Sheesh!"

Navi peeped from beneath Link's hat, wriggling out until her wings popped up.

Link walked away. How do I get a sword and shield? He saw the forked home again and approached. The sign read,

House of Twins

He entered. Inside was neat, a raised section of flooring supporting two beds front and back. A large stump flanked by small ones served as table and chairs, a girl sitting in one. A huge corked pot stood nearby.

"My sister took some Rupees and went shopping at the store that had a red roof. Tee hee! Speaking of Rupees, a green one is worth one, a blue one is worth five and a red one is worth twenty. Hee hee!"

Link exited, soon seeing the stump-house rimmed with ruddy fabric. Off he went.

A girl's giggle echoed, Link flinching. "Hi, Link! Look this way! Look over here and talk to me."

Link looked up; Navi flew up, aura getting bluer.

Sitting atop some projecting red roofing was a girl, legs dangling, one knee over the other, her hands down. "Yes, yes!" she called, "That's how you use a fairy! It's so great that you finally have a fairy partner! I'll teach you how to talk to people using your fairy! When a fairy flies near a person or thing, think in your mind Z and look in that direction. Most younger Kokiri call it L Targeting, though. If you use Z Targeting, you can talk to people from a distance, like we're doing now. When you have nothing that you can target, you can Z just to look forward. Try it!"

Link turned away. Z! His vision seemingly also had Navi's sight, allowing him to look through two pairs of eyes at once. He smiled. This is cool.

Link read a signpost:

Kokiri Shop

We have original forest goods!

He ran underneath the projecting roofing, entering the store. Inside had a wide counter, the small shopkeeper behind it with his hands on the countertop, hopping so he could see. At either side of him were large shelves with various items.

Yet another ginger girl wearing a headband had Link stumbled upon. "This shop...It sells things you can get in the forest for free! Tee hee!"

Link approached the counter.

The shopkeeper jumped. "Welcome! Look around."

"I'm looking for a sword and shield," Link said.

"We sell shields, but not swords!"

Link stared at the arrows for sale, eyes brightening up. I wish I had a bow. He looked at the other items. Deku Seeds, Deku Nuts, Deku Stick, Deku...Shield!

Budmm!

"You don't have enough Rupees!" the shopkeeper informed.

Wait, how much is it? "Forty Rupees?!" How am I gonna find that much money?!

Once back outside, Link Z Targeted at the big stone blocks lined across the nearby pond, where a small waterfall poured from the cliff side.

A sign read,

Stepping Stones in the Pond

If you boldly go in the direction you want to jump, you will leap automatically. If you hop around on the stones, you'll become happier!

Full of anticipation, Link ran forth, the girl leaning from her platform to watch. Link ran forth. "Huht!" He jumped, then again. "Hohh!" And thrice, "Haaah!" and splashed into the water.

Water rushing up his face and into sinuses, Link's head resurfaced, hair and hat soaked. "Hweh..."

Navi hovered, unimpressed. "Smooth, Link, smooth."

Frowning, he splashed her.

"Eep!"

Link swam to the waterline and climbed out, he and Navi shaking waterdrops off. He paused then...looked up.

The girl pleasantly stared, not laughing or anything. She patiently waited.

Link tightened his hat and cracked his knuckles. Rubbing his foot against the ground, Link charged. He jumped forth, again, and again! Link landed on the other side of the pond. He confidently looked back.

The girl sitting on the platform clapped. "Woohoo! Way to go, Link! It's nice to see that you finally learned how to jump in a straight line!"

Navi snickered, though Link didn't seem to notice.

He turned around again, only realizing another girl pleasantly standing at this side of the pond, hands together near her chin. "Oh, you have a fairy now?! That's great, Link!"

Link proudly nodded. "And I was summoned by the Great Deku Tree!"

"What? You've been called by the Great Deku Tree? What an honor! He may give you a special gift! Tee hee! That's because the Great Deku Tree is our father, the forest guardian, and he gave life to all of us Kokiri!"

Link balled his fist. "And I must save him." Yet, Link sighed, all eagerness fading, even his ears tilting down. "Except... Mido won't let me go see the Great Deku Tree."

Her eyes widened. "Mido being a meanie, again? Hmm... Oh! I saved this for whoever could jump across the pond to make them happy. Here!" She handed him a Blue Rupee.

Link stared at his first payment with big eyes. "Wow! Thanks so much!" He stashed it away then gave her a big hug.

Laughing, she patted his back. "OK, OK, Link! Put me down, please." He did, they released.

"I'm heading off to find a sword and shield. Thanks again!"

"Good luck, Link!"

Link moved on. Maybe Saria knows something about getting a sword and shield?
