Kerry is sitting in her trailer going over her lines. Truth be told, she was just sitting there daydreaming. The last month has been this scary and wonderful dream all at the same time. They have 2 episodes in the can and are about to start Episode 3. It feels like this really surreal alternate reality they are experiencing but it's their truth, all at the same time. She's on the phone with her mom.
"I really want you and dad to come out soon," she says to her mom. Kerry throws her head back laughing, "I know mom. It's a long flight but you get to see your one and only, me."
There is a knock at the door, "Hold on mom. Someone is at the door."
She gets up and goes to the door, only to hear a special tap on the door. She knows who it is. "Mommy, I have to go," she says as she opens the door. She's immediately hit with a rush, seeing those beautiful eyes standing there.
"I can come back," Tony says softly.
She shakes her head. "I love you too mom. Tell dad I'll call him. Love you both." Tony waves his hand. "Mom, Tony says hi," she smiles back at him. There is a moment of silence, "Yes Mom. Bye." She hangs up the phone and looks up to him. "My mom says hello! And she can't wait to see you when she comes out."
"They are coming out. That's great!"
"Yes, I am trying to set it up. Everything has been so busy," she says as she motions to her couch.
She stops and looks at him with the wonder she finds herself staring at him with. "My mother loves you."
"Oh, does she? What's not to love?" He jokes.
She rolls her eyes playfully, "The ego."
"What did she say?"
"What do you mean?"
"What did your mom say? She said something."
Kerry tries to shrug it off. "What?"
"Kerry," he says slowly. He tries to center her with his voice. He doesn't know it just makes her crazier.
"She wants to know why I tease you so much. Why I give you such a hard time?"
"And…"
"You know why?" She is trying not to look at him. She turns her back.
"Yes, I know why but you will never admit it. At least not yet. I hope you will, someday."
She turns away from him, grabbing one of her coconut waters from off the counter, "you want to go over the script. This is the big one."
He comes up behind her slowly. The delicious friction between them felt like shocks. It's something they both can't describe. It's something they felt from the very beginning. "Changing the subject is not going to change the situation Ker. Don't run."
"I am not running," she defends while her eyes close. His scent, his heat, his breath on her neck is almost too much to take. She thought she had been weak at the knees a few times in her life, but she learned that Tony Goldwyn wins that superpower. At least that is one of his.
He has as close to her shoulder blade as he can get. He purposely lets his lips graze…. He knows her defenses are almost non-existent. "You have been running for a long time."
She squares her shoulders and turns around to face and immediately regrets doing it. "I feel like I am in something I can't run from even if I wanted to. But in the end, I'll lose and it's something I'll never get over."
"And I feel like if we don't ever try, I'll never get over that." He takes her face into his hands. "Look me in the eye and tell me you think I am going to hurt you."
She sighs, "Tony," shaking her head.
He stares her down, "Tell me you know that I won't hurt you."
She bites her lip, "I know you don't want to hurt me but Tony we aren't two single people playing poker with our relationship. We are two people with two very complicated situations."
She holds up her script, "I care this on my shoulders and you…"
"I am not going to hurt you. At least I won't intentionally hurt you. And I am too proud of you to ruin this," he says taking the script out of her hand. "This is going to be bumpy. We both know that, but we have an ace in a pocket," he tries to remind her.
She tries to pull away from him, but he won't let her, "The world doesn't know that ace exists. You can't just throw that card on the table now. People are going to automatically know what's going on. They aren't going to believe this this was already there. You two were already apart. It's hard Tony, she's still yours, especially now."
"I don't regret my girls, not ever. But I regret not waiting for a soulmate. I satisfied my family, my name, and I never bothered to satisfy myself." She looks at him, as if to say he's been satisfied. He can see the thoughts in her eyes. That's how well he can read her. "Not satisfied with a complete life."
"And what is your idea of a complete life," she puts him on the spot.
He takes the script and skims through the pages, and he begins to read Fitz's lines, "Suddenly I'm looking down at myself. How did I get here? Why didn't I meet you sooner? What kind of coward was I to marry her and not wait for you to show up?"
There it is, that ability he has to break down all that stubborn will she has when it comes to him. "We never knew the other existed and for a while we existed at a different time."
"Someone knew our paths had to lead to this. We've had too many things happen that put us together. Now if this is not the last and only sign, we needed, I don't know what is."
She walks over to her couch and sits, subtly patting it for him to sit with her. He sits down next to her. She grabs his hand, "I never told anyone, not really, why I called off my engagement."
"I would never ask you to talk about that."
"No, but my parents knew and some of my closest family and a few friends knew. But the truth of it all was partly you."
He looks at her surprised by this admission. "Me…. I am glad I did but what did I do?"
"He and I had been drifting for a while. And it wasn't because we didn't care about each other, but you know how it is when your star starts to shine brighter, especially between a woman and a man. Nothing could go right for him, and things were starting to always go right for me, and it slowly became a problem."
"Men have egos, some much bigger than others."
"Then, I go to these Creative Coalition events and you, and I talk until the wee hours of the mornings, and it was like you had been a part of my life, all my life, and didn't make sense to me at all."
"It didn't make sense to me either. I never wanted those conversations to end. Every time I wanted to kidnap you run away with you just to keep you near me."
"The tabloids would have loved that," she laughs faintly.
"That's when I knew there was something missing for me, with him, well just another thing missing. We didn't have those talks. I thought we had that connection, after all we were young kids together and then later adults. But every time I talked to you, I thought, this is the man of my dreams," she looks at him to see him blushing. "Then the sensible voice reminded me, "In another time and another place this would be okay but…" Without saying those next words, she picks up his ring finger. "Then I'm centered again."
"You don't need to be centered. You got me," he smiles.
"And this weekend you will be going back to Connecticut spending the weekend, "she says trying to get up, but he doesn't let her.
"You know I have to go back, and I take care of lot of business when I am there."
She breaks from his grasp, bringing her feet under her, balling up, "And you'll be spending time with her and..."
"We own that house," He answers.
"I am going to ask you something and I know I have no right to ask but I am going to ask you anyway."
He decides not to entertain the question. He pulls her into a kiss and lays her down on the couch. "You can ask me anything you want. We can trust each other. I need you to trust me Ms. Washington," he says as he kisses her. She fights it at first and then she leans into it. "Do you trust me?"
"My mind wanders…"
"And you don't think my mind wanders about you sometimes."
She looks at him, incredulously, "What do you mean?"
"Look at me, I am not a spring chicken. I am considered an old guy. Hell, I am an old guy. What could I possibly give you, to sustain you. We are 17 years apart. What happens when the younger guy comes along and you realize the future is a lot shorter with me," he explains.
She looks at him seriously, "First of all, I've always liked older men. I've always dated older men."
"Don't remind me. 'Some I want to forget," he playfully rolls his eyes.
She laughs cutely, "Seriously, age doesn't mean anything to me."
"But what if you realize it does, down the road," he asks.
She brings his finger to her mouth, surprising him by sucking it softly, "Then shame on me because I am pretty sure it's worth the age," she teases.
"Fuck," he utters.
"This is what you do to me. I forget where I am. I forget that I am in my fucking trailer, where anyone could knock on the door. Anyone, the wrong person could catch us and then what."
He brings her fingers to his mouth, "Then they'll get a delicious surprise. Not as delicious as you," he says as he playfully licks each finger one by one.
"Damn if you aren't sexy for your age," she jokes.
"You are making fun of my age," he asks as he kisses up her arm, going up to her neck.
"Tony, we really can't. We are shooting in 30 minutes."
He looks at his watch and then cracks a smile at her. "Just another thing that Fitz and I have in common."
At this point, she's already lost in the moment. It will be hard to reel her in and he knows. He almost has her where he wants her, "And just what is that?"
He looks at his watch again, "I can get this done in 20 minutes. 20 amazing minutes to be exact." He says as he is laying her down on the couch.
She can't help but uncontrollably laugh at his cuteness and his sexiness. She slaps his chest. "Shut up. We can't."
"I can do all the work. You just have to sit and enjoy my work. Come on...I'm dying here," he kisses down her neck, nibbling softly at her bronze skin. "We haven't been together in 3 weeks."
"We are supposed to be going over our lines," she says with a labored breath.
He places another kiss on her lips, "We will get that to that."
She puts a hard stop on him kissing her neck, "No. We must run lines. And you know why we haven't been together in 3 weeks."
He reluctantly lifts himself from her, "Yes, I know." He looks down at his growing erection, throwing his head back. She tries to ignore it. "Fine, can we talk about you never gave me an answer about this summer?"
She wiggles under him, causing him to shift his weight. She plays coy. "The lawyers finally gave us a deal we can both agree on, on that house. And Dave has agreed to it. So, I just want to get it over with.""
"I'm just being a baby that's all and I don't want you near him."
"Don't worry, we are not getting back together plus he's getting married."
Tony let's out a playfully sigh of relief, "I am happy for him."
She presses her finger into the indentation on his cheek, "No you aren't but there's no reason for you to be worried."
"We are a messed-up pair, aren't we?"
"I suppose we are," she smiles. "What was your question?"
He traces the inside of her thigh. She's wearing jogging pants. "You know what question that is. Are we going away this summer?"
"I don't know if that's a good idea," she shields.
"We are going to go away to one of my family's very private properties. Just you and me and my cooking and everything else."
"What are your kids going to think?"
"It's not like summer is family time for us. It hasn't been for some time. I wanted to take the girls somewhere and then you and I would go after. I just want us to have a week to decompress before we come back. And you already won the heart of one."
She drops her head blushing. "How private will this be?"
"So private we will only hear each other breathing," he winks.
She takes a deep breath. She knows this is the biggest step. Although the biggest was admitting their feelings. "Okay, as long as you do what you need to do with your girls and."
He stops her before she starts rambling, putting his finger on her lips. "I promise you. It's not going to be a problem."
Just then, there is a knock on the door. "Kerry it's Darbs," Darby says.
They both jump up. They both check their clothes and their face. "Coming," Kerry answers as Tony literally throws himself into the chair across from the couch. That makes Kerry giggle. She opens the door to a smiling Darby. "Tony and I were about to run lines," Kerry says almost nervously as she ushers Darby in.
Darby smiles, "Hey Tony!
"Hey Darbs!" He shoots back.
Darby can sense something in the room, just not tension. "You two didn't just have sex, did you?"
Kerry chokes and Tonys eyes grow like saucers, "What?" He speaks.
"You heard me, you two didn't just have sex, did you?"
"Why would you ask that?" Kerry says.
Tony is quick to protect, "Why would we be having sex?"
"I'm just kidding but you two look like you were just caught with your hand in the cookie jar. Plus, that love scene…" Darby says as Kerry and Tony steal a look at each other again.
"No, we were just running lines. This is the explain all episode." Kerry asks.
"Yes, that's going to be a pretty hot scene. You two ready for it."
"The new director seems cool," Kerry says.
"I like him. I think he is going to fit right in.
Tony speaks up, "Yeah, Tom is definitely going to fit in." He knows she's freaking out.
Darby stops for a moment, "I almost forgot what I came in form. We wanted to get together this weekend, just the girls. I wanted to see if you were in. Maybe get us a little hotel room and have a weekend sleep over and gab and drink."
Kerry looks over at Tony. She can see he hates the idea for obvious reasons, but she doesn't want to draw any attention to them right now, especially now. "Sure, who's going to book it."
"We will let Quinnie do it," Darby answers as she turns to leave. Darby rubs her hands together, "This is going to be so much fun." She goes toward the door, "I better get going. You guys got some heavy stuff to go over."
Darby left and there was silence. "I guess it's a good thing I'll be gone this weekend," Tony says.
"I guess so," she answers as she tries to busy herself.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing," she shrugs.
"Ker, what's wrong?"
"What do people see when they see us? Do we give that off? Are we not hiding it well? Are we hiding it all? And what are people going to see on screen." It's as if her brain was running a marathon. He walks over to her, trying to stop her tracks.
"Jeff asked me what we were going to do about this magnetism, and I told him we had to be careful, and we will be."
"They say the camera never lies," she reminds him.
"Good, then let the camera show everyone, everything they need to see. And that is the truth."
She buries her head into his chest, "I am agreeing to going away with you under one condition." She looks up at him with her adorable doe eyes.
"What is that?"
"There better be water, sand, and sun," she announces.
"It will definitely have all those things. I am not the smartest man in the world, but I am smart enough to know getting you in a bathing suit is wisest decision a not so smart, smart man, can make."
She hits his chest playfully, "Let's run lines."
Over the next few days, they filmed the episode. Things ran more than smoothly, and they all felt like everything was falling into place. The cast was starting to feel that vibe. They were so in tune with each other. It may each day easier and easier. Shonda and Betsy screen the episode. Shonda did her regular view and made changes to the edits. It wasn't hard to see. After all she saw the first day. She's seen it before she knows what she's dealing with it.
Shonda looks at Betsy, "In spades. They got it in spades."
"They more than have it."
"Well, we both saw it when they were walking up and down talking," Shonda says. "This is going to be the underbelly of this show. I can already see it."
"We have to capitalize on it, but it has to fit the dynamic," Betsy agrees.
"The moment on the bus defines their journey, no doubt. But Olivia and Fitz relationship is the Scandal, but they are also the love story."
"Are we looking at the Season 2 angle?" Betsy asks.
"The marketing, yes we are," Shonda answers.
"That part is going to be easy. It's the other part that is not going to be easy," Betsy points out.
"I know. I know,"
They keep looking at the screen.
Tony is back in Connecticut. He drove into the city to catch a show and attend a few meetings. He came home to an icy reception but that was to be expected. He and his friend Richard meet for lunch. They are working on bringing a show to life.
"So how were things when you got home?" He asks.
"As to be expected but its still weird to me. As far as she is concerned," he says.
"Some people don't like change. Change that mean something."
Tony takes a sip on his coffee, "I love her. I want her. And I willing to risk I all."
"Then do it. That is probably not what I should be telling you, but I want to see you happy. You are not that guy. You are not that guy to uproot someone's life for a roll in the hay. Marriage is hard and open marriage can be that much easier."
"I never liked it. The open part but this is not that. This is real. This is true. And I don't want a fling with her. I want her. And sometimes I forget I'm not a young man anymore. I see stars in my own eyes and I'm imagining her having our kids. We were star crossed for years. We are no longer two ships passing in the night."
"I know what you are worried about and that's because you are a good man. But…Tony's got a life too."
"But I've been there and it's hard, divorce is hard."
"Yes, but you were a kid when it happened to you. You aren't dealing with kids. You are dealing with young adults. I can see you are serious."
"Something scared the shit out of me," Tony admits.
"What was it?"
"She's wrapping up stuff with her ex and I heard her talking to Jamie on the phone. She was venting. It was cool. I understand their relationship, but I got stupidly jealous and then…," He shakes his head.
"And then what?"
"And then I heard her turn him down for trying to fix her up with one of his friends. She gave him the old excuse that she didn't want to date right now. She wants to focus on getting the show off the ground. In part that is true. But then it hit me, I would never be an option."
"But you are an option for her."
"Yeah, but I would be no one's first thought. I've got all the strikes against me. Mainly too much baggage."
"Well, she turned down the offer, I doubt it was all about not wanting to date right now. Maybe she does want to date just you but it's a complicated situation. She's never been here before, and she is scared. I know you understand that you are just frustrated."
"The lawyer is working on everything, and I am going to be more than fair, but this is not going to be easy and…"
"Get past that part first and then move on to the rest," Richard suggests.
Tony sips his coffee and then laughs, "Let's talk about the Divide. We've got a lot of work to do to present this to the cable networks. I had some more ideas that I think would work into this well."
"Well, let's hear it."
They sit and discuss the ideas for their pilot that they are working on.
She and Tony spent all night on the phone last night after she finished taping. He flew home on a red eye that Thursday and she worked that Friday. Now it's Saturday morning and she and the girls are checking in to the Montage Beverly Hills. They will go to the studio on Monday. They are having lunch and she's sort of daydreaming.
"Earth to Kerry," Bellamy says.
Kerry stretches her eyes, hearing her name in the distance. "I'm sorry. I don't know where I was." All the girls look at each other and then back at her.
"Are you okay?" Bellamy asks.
"I'm fine, why?"
Darby chimes in, "We haven't had a chance to talk. I wanted to apologize for the other day. I'm sorry about the other day in the trailer. I thought I was breaking the tension in the room." Bellamy and Katie look at each other, confused because they obviously missed something.
"Okay spill! What did we miss?" Katie says.
"When I came into her dressing room the other day, her and Tony were about to run lines. When I came I the air was thick and I made a bad joke," Darby says as she feels out Kerry's mood.
"What kind of thick?" Bellamy says with piqued interest.
"Well, it's not like you caught them having sex," Katie replies. Darby and Kerry shoot each other a look which does not go unnoticed. "Damn, were you two having sex?"
"What? NO," Kerry says too loudly for her own tastes. That doesn't go unnoticed either.
"Can I say something, and I don't want to offend you or Tony?" Katie asks.
Kerry doesn't answer, she just nods.
"How do you feel about him?" Katie continues.
"What do you mean? That's an odd question," Kerry answers.
"Sometimes I see something there and I let my wander and wonder. I watch your scenes when I can watch. I watch you two. It is pure magic."
Kerry can't help but help but smile, she recalls something that Tony said to her last night, What I feel with you is something no one will ever be able to put into words, its magic. They all noticed the smile on her face.
"Something you want to tell us. You don't have to, but it looks like you could burst," Darby says. She may have been the quickest or the first to notice it. But she didn't want to make things awkward, which is exactly what she ended up doing.
"" I feel like the worst person alive," Kerry says.
"Why?" Bellamy asks.
"Because there is so much, I need to explain but I don't know how to explain it without sounding like an unforgiving homewrecker." All the ladies' eyes get wide. She notices their reactions.
"So, you two had just slept together," Darby says quickly.
"No, we hadn't," Kerry answers. "It's just that, this thing," she starts and then looks at Katie, "This magic is something we've known was there for a few years now. We used to talk about in those moment and then try to forget it just as fast."
"When?" Bellamy asks.
"We met in 2006 at one of the CC events and we've known each other since."
"What?" Katie says, genuinely shocked.
"That's why when Shonda and I were talking about who should play the President and we abandoned her idea of a black president because I didn't feel comfortable." She really confuses them with that statement. "I am already on President Obama's committee, and I am heavily involved in the administrations Arts Council, I didn't want people to think the show was some subliminal message."
Their expressions all change as she continues.
"She already knew him, and I suggested him, and it all came together."
Now the expression on the ladies' faces has changed to epiphanies.
"I had an ulterior motive," she admits.
You can see that the ladies think they already know what is not being said.
"I think it just made things worse for us, at least. This is so complicated. I don't want you think I am this bitch on wheels."
Bellamy reaches over and grabs her hand, "We don't think that."
"Would you tell me if you really did?" Kerry asks.
They all say in unison, "Yes, we would."
"I don't feel right discussing things about his marriage that he should explain himself. I only know because I am in the situation." She looks at her hands which she is fiddling with. "I don't want you to think the worst of him or me."
Darby grabs her other hand, "We won't."
Katie looks at her, "We can't judge."
"I just need you to listen," Kerry answers.
They all nod that they can. She begins to tell them the story that started innocently that got them to where they are now.
