Hi everyone, here is a short one-shot of a date between Izzy and Mimi, for no other reason other than I am not very good at first date fics and just wanted to do a short chapter on one.
Hope you enjoy!
It all begins with a coffee
Izzy liked to consider himself cool, calm and collected when confronted with a problem. His father had installed this in him at an early age that no problem was insurmountable if you had patience and the drive to get it done.
It was this sort of thinking that took him deep into the digital world and back again having changed for the better from the experience, it also served him well in his academic pursuits and free time where his technical prowess was so pronounced that at the tender age of sixteen years old that he won a scholarship and major corporations begun to approach him into considering them as a place to work in the future and how they could make it happen for him.
While he himself would never label himself as a 'wunderchild' he was aware that his abilities were much more advanced than his peers, and his drive to succeed enabled him to achieve these heights.
Sitting opposite him, was a problem he could not solve.
Well not a problem per se, the problem was with him.
Sitting opposite him carefully blowing on her coffee was Mimi Tachikawa.
Izzy's palms sweated even looking at her, thoughts running through his mind a thousand miles an hour and he felt his face turn red, he was surprised he was not actually on fire at this point.
He did not know what made him do it, he could rationalize any way he wanted, he could blame puberty even.
But he had done it, one day at school he had been talking to Mimi about catching up with Tai and Matt sometime as it had been a while since they saw them when out of nowhere, he blurted out asking Mimi if she would like to go on a coffee date with him, you know, before they saw Tai and Matt perhaps?
If Mimi had been surprised, she did not show it, she smiled kindly at him and said yes, it would be lovely to do that before heading off to see the other two digidestined.
Mimi blew on her coffee again and took a sip.
"Not drinking your coffee yet Izzy?" she asked.
Izzy, who had been in his own world, gave a start.
"Oh, oh yes, just a little hot at the moment that's all"
Mimi smiled at him and took another small sip and gave a sound of approval.
"This is a good coffee" she set it down and looked at him.
"I'm normally used to my dates being a bit more talkative, just as a heads up" she said teasingly
Izzy honestly did know how to reply, he tried to wrack up some words, how could he be failing himself now?
Why now? He thought to himself.
Mimi laughed.
"It's totally okay Izzy, I've known you for years, nothing much has changed, I'm still your friend if that helps."
Izzy relaxed a little and smiled back.
"Well other than school and the occasional catch up with friends, we don't get to see each other often" he started to say, and with his heart racing he continued.
"…So I thought it would be good idea to catch up before we saw the others." He finished.
Mimi stirred her coffee thoughtfully with her spoon but kept her eyes on him.
"Mmm"
She stopped stirring.
"Izzy, I don't want to sound too forward or anything but you DID say coffee date"
Izzy could feel the heat crawl up his neck.
"th-that's correct" he said.
"Soooooo, this is a date yes?" she questioned.
Izzy thought he was going to faint, but tried to hold onto his composure.
"Yes"
The words came out of his mouth but they sounded like they came from very far away, almost as if he could not hear it himself.
"Fantastic!" Mimi beamed at him. "I do enjoy dates"
"Y-You do?" Izzy asked.
"Of course, it basically means I get free things, including this coffee" she said as she laid back in her chair "I'm only joking Izzy, I'm glad it's you."
It was Izzy's turn to smile
"Oh really? That is nice of you."
"Uh huh! Boys always think I'm interested in doing expensive things, as if that would make them more impressive to me. But it's not, believe it or not a simple coffee on a nice day is more than enough for me" Mimi said.
Izzy wasn't too surprised to hear this, although it was interesting to hear as she never had said anything against her previous dates in the past, but then again, they were still teenagers and it wasn't as if they had a large amount of money at this stage in life.
"So what made you do it?" Mimi asked.
"Do what?"
"Ask me out?" Mimi said more forwardly.
"Well, I don't actually know, it just seemed like the thing to do, I can't really explain myself" Izzy started to say, but took a moment to think about it a bit more deeply.
"I like you" Izzy said simply.
Mimi blushed a little.
"I like you too Izzy, I'm sorry I didn't let you know that beforehand"
When she said these words, the world came back to normal for him. It was as if time had gone from frozen and back to its regular pace, his heart settled down and he felt calmer, he also felt a sense of elation that eclipsed even his most beloved achievements.
Izzy looked at the rest of his coffee, then looked at Mimi.
"Hey do you want to go for a short walk before we see Tai and Matt? This coffee isn't very good, we can take the long way through the park."
Mimi smiled
"I would like nothing more"
