Twisted Times Traveling Past

Chapter One: Heaven

Echoes of muffled conversations, shrieks of laughter and shrills of; "Oh my God" and "Look at you," could be heard over the deep booms of the bass within the current song that was playing, which was Young MC's "Bust a Move".

Maura rotated her shoulders to the beat, while she and Jane walked through the hallways of Jane's alma Mater stopping at a banquet table with a collection of labels that said, "Hello my name is." Jane reached for two, writing her name on one with a black sharpie and "Nerd Isles," on the other for Maura. Jane stuck her's on above her left breast over her heart, then turned attention towards her best friend, rolled her eyes at the sight of Maura's attempt to "get into the groove" and slapped "Nerd Isles" right on Maura's left breast.

"Hey, I don't appreciate that action detective," Maura scolded Jane, as she smoothed her right hand over her breast to ease the sting.

"Why...because my action caused you a reaction?"

"Don't get smug with me, Jane! I'm out to have a good time regardless."

"Yeah, I can see that, Madonna. Just remember you're entering a cesspool of cliques. To some of these people, you're still a nerd, stoner, jock, cheerleader, band geek, etc., so stick with me and act umm...somewhat normal."

"I resent that detective!"

"Back with detective, I musta struck a nerve."

"I told you, I've never experienced the 'high school life,' as you were quick to say...attending an all-girls boarding school..."

Jane had to interrupt, "Yeah, and consider yourself lucky. High school can be mean and ugly."

"But I thought you were well liked. You did play sports. I'm sure you must have had somewhat of a following."

"I told you my group, over the years, while in these hallowed halls, had a falling out. Some of us, or more or less them, developed beyond their years and took advantage of that. I couldn't be a mean girl, and they were becoming just that."

"Oh yes...I can't wait to meet the mean girls!"

"Maura...hopefully we're beyond that now that we're adults."

They made their way into the gym as the music and crowd was louder, looking for a place to sit down.

Our women made it to the punch bowl. As Jane filled a cup for Maura, Steve Sanner and his wife Emily, Jane's former well-developed friend, approached.

"Wow! Rizzoli, you clean up nice. I should have known you'd be a looker," Steve wolf whistled and checked out Jane's figure.

Emily cleared her throat, "Excuse me Steve? Hi Jane, sorry about that, good to see you, it's been years."

"Yes...yes, it has (under her breath and I'd like to keep it that way), "Jane responded trying to be cordial.

Maura snuck up behind Jane, Jane turned to introduce her best friend to the former.

"Emily, Steve, this is Dr. Maura Isles, Chief Medical Examiner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and my work colleague."

Just then Giovanni approached, swinging his arms around Maura and Jane's shoulders, as he stood between them, squeezing them closer together towards him.

"Hey, Jane tell 'm the truth. Huh, Steve...who would'a thought? But Jane's got good taste...Maura's hawt! Jane, you too...both 'cha hawt! Gotta go get my girl...she's f'n hawt! Always good to see yous. Hey, save me a dance!" With that Giovanni went in search of his date.

"What do you suppose he meant by that?" Steve stood perplexed.

"Boy, Steve, you could be so dense at times, Emily stated then leaned in towards Jane and Maura to hear, "possible old football injury...not serious, just some things never change."

"He could stop by my office, I could run a few tests," Maura said politely.

Jane grabbed Maura's arm at the elbow to still the conversation.

"Not necessary, thank you, but we're good," Emily responded.

"Shit...shit...shit." Jane said under her breath, but clear enough for Maura to hear.

"What...what is it, Jane?"

"Asshole couple, Rory Graham and his wife, Kate are headed straight for us. Come on let's dance."

Jane set down their punch cups, grabbed Maura's hand leading her to the dance floor in the middle of the gym, while excusing themselves from Steve and Emily's discussion, saying "fun chat" over her shoulder.

In the distance she heard Rory yell out, "Rolly polly Rizzoli is a lezzboli!"

"What?! This is certainly a different demographic than I expected! The level of decorum is substandard. You used to socialize with these people?"

"Yes, case and point, 'these people'...I was young and dumb. You wanted to view the high school experience...well, here it is at its finest!"

Jane and Maura stood apart and started to fast dance to the Yeah Yeah Yeah's, song Maps, as friend do. They flayed their arms and stomped their feet dancing to the beat, why listening to the lyrics, Jane smiled and sunk it all in.

As they danced Jane's thoughts played out as such; "Wait a minute, I was supposed to be here with Casey and in usual Casey fashion he couldn't make it. Backup plan, Maura. Maura always has my back. Look at her! What a goofball, dancing like that...well hey now, she's not half bad. And shit, what those assholes said back there didn't even phase her. Probably had a lot of lesbian action going on in that boarding school of her's. What am I saying? I'm beginning to sound like Steve and Rory. What pigs! Maura's pretty cute. She looks stunning in that blue dress. I hope she's having fun. I feel awful that I asked her to come with me and she sees this part of my past. Some of these kids/adults are down right nasty, why did I come? Maura. Maura wanted to come. Ok Rizzoli, you can do this! Oh and another fast song...of course it has to be "Shout."

Jane and Maura were all smiles, dancing, building up a sweat and a decent work out. Jane saw Steve and Rory mocking her and Maura, by puckering their lips and caressing each other in a taunting manner, then pretending to dry hump each other, as Emily and Kate hung their heads down in shame.

"Fucking boys' club!" Jane shouted for Maura to hear.

"Never mind them...this is fun!" Maura kicked her leg out and shimmied her body, then raised her arms in the air, waving them from side to side, singing with the lyrics.

"A little bit louder now...

A little bit louder now...

Heyo...heyo...heyoo"

Jane's smile grew wider. She proceeded to join her friend.

Maura paused as the music changed, leaned into Jane, telling her that she was going to step outside for some fresh air and to cool off.

Jane went to collect two new cups of something stronger from the bar, and then joined her friend outside. Jane took a moment to appraise the vision of her best friend, underneath the glow of the spring moon. The bright white orb illuminated Maura's figure, which Jane was aware of but never fully appreciated. Jane could see a slight sheen of sweat accenting Maura's skin, wondering how soft and smooth it must be.

"Hey," Maura greeted Jane with a warm smile.

"Hey, you. I brought drinks. Not sure how good they'll be, considering this is all taking place within a high school gym."

"Thank you, Jane. I'm sure I've had worse."

"Who ya fool'n?"

Maura took a sip and puckered her lips.

"I stand corrected, you were right. Heavy on the cheap liquor."

"Hey...alright then, I think the bartender knows we all need a little more liquid courage to face these people and transport back in time!"

They shared a laugh and enjoyed the moment.

"Casey will be disappointed to hear what he's missing. You'll have to fill him in on all the gossip when he comes back."

"I'm not thinking about Casey at the moment, quite frankly…his loss."

"How do you mean, Jane?"

"Yo, Jane! Jane! Maura!" Jane and Maura's attention was directed to Giovanni, who was yelling across the field pointing out his date and making his way towards them.

"Hey, Jane, remember Maria? Maria Korkman…the fat chick from back then? She's with me. We're together now. Have been for a while! We're engaged! She's hot! Right babe?!"

Giovanni had his arm around Maria's shoulder and raised his chin in recognition to Maria.

"Hi Jane. I heard you're a big time officer, very successful," Maria acknowledged.

"Hi, Maria. Detective, homicide, actually and you're…"

"Teacher, fostering young minds."

"A noble profession, not economically rewarding, non the less, but I do imagine it does have it's benefits." Maura added.

"I'm sorry, you are…" Maria asked.

"Oh, that's Maura. She's some sort of doctor, babe. Gonna get some action and then head back inside. See yas." Giovanni informed them, as Maria swatted his arm playfully.

"Gio, they don't need to know!"

"What!? Sorry babe. Hey, anyways, you twos I'm happy for you! Love is love."

"Thanks, Giovanni that's sweet. Congratulations on the engagement! We'll see you inside," Maura joined in on the fun.

"Yes, congrats!" Jane turned towards Maura to say, "Maura, you do know that he thinks we're a couple!"

"I know, so let him think that."

"Yeah, but you're lying."

"No, I'm just agreeing with his assumption. Not quiet a lie." Maura flashed a devilish mega white smile and Jane responded with her famous Rizzoli grin.

Through the walls of the gymnasium, Jane heard a familiar 80's slow song that began to play, Bryan Adam's Heaven. Maura saw the stillness in her friends coffee brown eyes, as she sensed that her friend was contemplating something.

Maura reached out for Jane's drink, taking it along with her own to set them down. Maura then walked up to her best friend, stepping within Jane's personal space and simply asked, "Dance with me, Jane?"

Jane blinked bringing herself back from the daze of the music, finding herself up close and personal with her best friend, only to spill out a confused, "What?"

Maura moved in closer, leaned on her tip toes to gain the height warranted and lips almost grazing one another, bodies closer now feeling clothed breasts touching, skimming down her hand along Jane's shoulder, falling from that point down Jane's arm, to catch her hand in Jane's. Whispering again, but this time not asking, but commanding, "Dance with me, Jane. Help me gain the full experience of the first slow dance."

(Song playing)

"Baby you're all that I want

When you're lyin' here in my arms"

Jane gathered Maura, her best friend, in her arms as they began to sway to "Heaven."

(Song playing)

I'm finding it hard to believe

We're in heaven

And love is all that I need

And I found it there in your heart

It isn't too hard to see

We're in heaven"

Soaking this moment in, Jane's senses were ablaze and in tune to Maura. Soft honey blonde locks painted over Jane's face with a light wisp here and there, as Maura's strawberry shampoo invaded Jane's olfactory. Jane's hands sought out Maura's hourglass figure within that tight fitting blue dress, which screamed, see me, touch me, feel me!

Oh, yes something was going on here. Oh, yes Maura feels so good and fits perfectly within Jane's embrace.

Now cheek to cheek, body to body, heartbeats beating in sync…this feeling is so…just so…so fucking right.

The song was coming to an end and just before the final two lyrics, not breaking Jane's euphoric state, Maura tilted her head so that she could brush her lips over Jane's ear to whisper a faint "Thank you, Jane."

"Rizzoli…Rizzoli…YO RIZZOLI…JESUS RIZZOLI!" Someone yelled out.

Screams…crying…sobbing…a crowd of people running out from the gymnasium.

"What the fuck, Rizzoli!" Rory yelled.

Sirens within the distance growing louder as police and an ambulance pulled up to the school.

Red and blue light swirling about along with those sirens. Jane and Maura know all these sights and sounds too well.

We have a dead body.
