Hiccup and Toothless were just on one of their routinely flies when something seemed to call to the Night Fury. The young Viking had learned over the years that nothing could stop a determined dragon so it was best not to resist. They flew low, barely brushing against the surface of the ocean, fast approaching a sea cave guarded by sharp rocks and rapid waves. Toothless drew in his massive wings opting instead to hop from rock to rock, nearly slipping a few times due to the waters slicking the stone. It's a close call at the mouth of the cave, but his friend manages it well enough. Venturing further into the cave Hiccup stays atop Toothless' back in case of quick escape.
"It's pretty dark in here," Hiccup murmurs. "Wanna give us some light, bud?"
Listening to his rider's request Toothless releases a plasma blast watching as it briefly lights the way before completely disappearing down the tunnel and burning out. The cave must not be very deep if they could still, if a at distance, the blast burn out. They go further, Toothless using his echolocation to navigate their surroundings while his human counterpart remains blind. After a few minutes of what felt like aimless wondering a tiny shiver of light shimmers adjacent to the scorch from the plasma blast. Suddenly Toothless is acting wild, bucking Hiccup and roaring anxiously.
"Woah! Toothless, bud, what is it?"
The Night Fury charges forwards at full speed towards the sliver of light. Getting closer Hiccup can see it's another sea cave opening, narrow but large enough to fit a dragon like Toothless through it. The young Viking holds tight to the reins of his rider saddle, opening his friend's tail fin wider to give them more speed to squeeze past. Flopping through to the other side, they land beside a sallow pool of water, seaweed floating and layered like a nest. Toothless sniffs at the pool and starts cooing, purring low and deep in his throat. That's new. Hiccup had never seen the other like this before. The dragon is pawing at the seaweed, sifting through it like he's trying to find something. He nudges his rider forward nearly making him take a dive into the water. Hiccup assumes Toothless wants him to help look for the thing he wants so he wades his hands through the seaweed not sure what he's looking for until he feels something. It's slimly, slippery and all kinds of gooey gross and it's warm...really warm. Hiccup rips away the plants to reveal a jelly-like egg. A glowing, sizzling jelly-like egg.
"Toothless, get down!"
Throwing himself to the ground on his belly and covering his head, Hiccup hears the pool's water boiling until finally there's a popping sound and hot water sprinkles them both. He peers back to see if the ordeal is over or this is just the beginning, but after a few minutes nothing else happens. The steam rising off the water obscures whatever dragon had hatched yet one sniff to the air has Toothless excited. Something is definitely off here if Toothless is happy to see a baby dragon.
Stepping closer and approaching with caution Hiccup toes the edge of the pool, trying not to spook the poor thing-then Toothless decides to flap his wings, effectively clearing the steam but nearly knocks him in again. He thanks his dragon for the oh so helpful assistance before turning back to the the nest. What he sees shocks him. There sat in the water is a tiny Night Fury, with oversized wings-hatchlings always have an oversized head, horns or eyes, but the wings are a first-and odd coloring. Instead of the famous signature black only its back is black, the under belly is a creamy white that the black fades into. The Nightling's (a name Hiccup just coined) eye color is a cerulean blue rather than toxic green. Even further observation shows Hiccup that the baby has four ear flaps not eight, but that could just be that Toothless was older. There's a lot they don't know about Night Furies. Now Toothless might not be the only one.
"Where's your family, little one?" Hiccup looks around, but find nothing but the small opening above the pool. Toothless sniffs around, letting out a soft sad rumble. "Find something, Tooth?"
There at then entrance of the small sectioned off cave were black and white scales along with a tiny deformed tail. How they missed that Hiccup didn't know. He turns back to the hatchling, looking down at the baby sitting confused.
"You have no one. No one to take care of you," he whispers, voice filled with sorrow. "And you don't even know it."
Toothless noses his human's face licking up the tears stream down his cheeks.
"I think I brought my satchel. We can put you in there, head to the Edge to tell the other then head back to Berk to talk with Gothi." Toothless rumbles in excited question. "Yeah, bud, we're taking them with us."
His dragon tackles him to the ground, slobbering all over his face.
"Okay, okay," Hiccup laughs. "C'mon let's get the baby and leave."
