A/N Hi everyone! I am fairly new to posting and am excited to put to pen an idea that had been forming for a while. I would love any constructive criticism, please be kind :) And hope you like the story!
My eyes slowly blink open as the ringing of my phone fills the room. Bleary eyed, I scrounge for my phone on the side table until I find the infernal device.
Bringing the phone in front of my eyes, I blink against the sharp brightness and see that someone is calling me.
Will.
Answering the call, I put it on speaker and drop the phone to my stomach, closing my eyes.
"Lizzy, I have been calling you for the past 10 minutes! Where have you been?"
I can visualise Will's expressions distinctly – worried and perturbed with a vertical worry line running right between his forehead.
"Sleeping, like normal human beings tend to do at…" I pick up my phone to check the precise time, "…2:37 AM."
"Ah." There is a pause at the other end. "Sorry I forgot about the time difference." He sounds sheepish as he says so. I can almost see him tugging at his ear nervously.
"Well, now that I am half awake, why are you calling me at this god forsaken hour?"
"Just wanted to let you know I landed. Safely, that is."
I sit up. "Oh my god! How is Massachusetts? Are you loving it? Are you loving the weather? Are you loving the people?"
I hear him chuckle. "Well, considering that I have yet to step out of the airport I am afraid I will have to withhold my judgement."
"Right, my bad. But I want to know everything! About the campus, the weather, the people you meet, especially the girls." I say in a teasing tone. At least I hope I do.
"I'll start making notes immediately." I can hear the smile in his voice, making me smile too. "Okay, I should let you sleep now, it is quite late there. I'll call you later Lizzy."
I nod even though he can't see me. "All the best Will. Talk to you soon."
The phone clicks shut and I fall back on my bed. Staring into the darkness, I feel a pang in my chest as I wonder for the umpteenth time in the last month. Do I have a crush on my best friend?
Will and I met during our undergraduate year at UPenn. We were both pursuing different degrees, with him studying management studies and me studying economics. At first glance, you would assume that us becoming best friends must be a fluke. We are as opposite as Gryffindor and Slytherin.
Will belongs to the wealthy and influential lineage of Darcy's, I come from the middle-class family of Bennets. He is tall (think Jason Momoa tall), I barely reach his shoulders at my 5'2. He is an ISTJ, I am an ENFP personality type*. He has a very small family, with him and his younger sister Georgie being the only remaining Darcy's. On the other hand, my family is as large as it comes with my parents and their five daughters.
The only things in common between Will Darcy and me was that we both shared a class (introduction to Economics) and that we vehemently detested our professor, Doctor Catherine de Bourgh. She was exactly as you would expect someone with a fancy surname like her to be – snobby and proud. But her biggest flaw of all was that she was incredibly incompetent.
Somewhere along working on a project together, battling Doctor Catherine de Bourgh, and surviving the semester, we became friends. And then with our respective elder sister (mine) and best friend (his) beginning a relationship, we became best friends.
Jane, my older sister by barely a year, and I began our undergraduate year together and within the first week, she had found the love of her life. Years of college, long distance, and living together, Jane and Charles had experienced it all.
And they are still together, happily.
For that matter, I think they are going to be together forever, considering the sparkling diamond I see on Jane's third finger as I reach our Saturday lunch table.
"Jane?" I whisper, staring at the ring on her finger.
"Oh yes Lizzy! Last night Charlie asked me to marry him and I said yes!" Jane bursts out, standing and grabbing my hands.
"Oh, dear Jane!" I throw my arms around and her for five minutes we are slobbering mess of laughter and tears. Calming down, we settle down in our seats, massive smiles on both our faces.
"Tell me everything! How did he propose, when is the wedding, who will be your maid of honour? I will be your maid of honour right?!"
Jane giggles and twists her ring absentmindedly. I am so happy for her.
"He took me out to dinner and booked the entire restaurant! Lizzy it was perfect. And we have not decided the wedding date yet. And of course, you will be my maid of honour, I would not have it any other way."
We chat about her proposal and the upcoming wedding for a long time, and as we are finishing our desserts, Jane asks innocently, "So, how is Darcy doing? Did he reach all right?"
My heart skips a beat.
This has been happening since some time whenever someone mentions Will's name.
"He is good and reached safely. We haven't got a chance to talk after that, but he must be busy settling in."
Jane nods and signals for the check. We hug goodbye and promise to meet again the next weekend to discuss the wedding.
On my way back home, I wonder if I should call Will. It has been 3 days since he landed, and he hasn't called me up. Not an unusually long time, but he said he would call me later. How late is later? London is 5 hours ahead of Massachusetts, so it must be around 8 AM there. Not too early for a chat, right?
I call Will up as I enter my apartment. The phone rings for as long as it can, and ultimately, I give up and cut the call. Leaving my phone on the sofa, I go to my room to change into my pajamas. As am I putting on my loose shirt, I hear my phone.
I sprint across the room and pick up the phone in record time.
"Will?"
"Lizzy!"
"Where were you? How have you been?" You haven't called me in 3 days, I think to myself.
"I am in my campus now, my classes start today. I have been good and have been making friends, exploring the city."
I bite my lip. I am happy that he is making new friends. That does not make me feel jealous at all. Nope.
"That's great. Did you hear the big news?"
"What big news?" I hear some voices on his end and then, "Lizzy, my lecture is just about to start, can I call you later?"
"Yes, of course." I say, trying not to let my disappointment show.
"Great. Bye, Lizzy." I am almost about to cut the call when I hear, "Oh, and I really miss you."
A blush sneaks up onto my face. Smiling, I reply, "I miss you too. Talk soon."
"Bye!"
I look at the phone in my hand, Will's caller id picture in front of me.
I think I have a crush on my best friend.
Shit.
