Mamoru was not happy. He impatiently looked at his clock. It was already ten. She hadn't called, she hadn't checked in. It wasn't like her. He figured she was probably too drunk and crashed and more than likely forgot to call him, but what he didn't expect was radio silence this late. He went through stages of grief. Worry, regret for not going, and then anger hit him after a certain point. She should have been up by now. The girls would have woken her by now. Rei would have dragged her out of bed by 9:30 bare minimum. Ami wasn't reaching out either. He had developed a good friendship with the blue haired pre-med student thanks to Usagi. They had a mutual understanding, or so he thought. He thought she would at least answer his messages, and ensure that Usagi was just a drunk spazz that forgot to call him.
It was unacceptable. He had already called multiple girls in the house, but no one had picked up their phones. It was irresponsible. How much could one group of girls actually drink? He had warned her multiple times to take it slow, and not be a sloppy person when drinking. Usagi promised her best behavior too, not that she needed to. He knew her for almost a decade, he had never known her to be a crazy party girl, not even before they began dating. She was always clumsy and childlike.
He couldn't focus on his studies with this dilemma. He would pause every few minutes to check his phone, over and over again. What was taking her so long? He wasn't used to being on the receiving end of being patient. She was usually waiting for him. He would have to apologize to her later for that. He didn't understand the anxiety it produced for her. It was a huge part of their previous fights. It ultimately led to a pretty bad break up and ugly year break. He wasn't able to see why she was acting so crazy back then. He found her to be so immature and ridiculous. She knew she was with someone in med school, she knew he was busy. He was working hard of course, he wanted to make them a good life. He was doing this for her too.
The blue eyed man grabbed his one again, irritated he picked Ami's number one more time. He huffed and puffed as it dialed and rang. He was going to lose it if she didn't answer again. He had half the mind to go to her house and confront her. To his surprise, Ami picked up. "Ami," He was cut off before he could say anything else, he heard worry in her voice.
"Mamoru, you need to come down now." Her voice was shaky. Ami wasn't an overly emotional person. His heart skipped a beat. He knew just from her tone that she was beyond serious. Something must have happened. All his anger instantly vanished, worry replaced it. She was more by the book and fact driven. It was rare to hear her sound so distressed. Instantly, he felt a pit in his stomach. "It's Usagi…" he could hear her stifle a cry.
"What happened?" He demanded. He stood up, already looking for a duffle bag. He was not going to waste any time. He really was going to have to go down there and demand answers.
"I can't…" Ami let out, "I really need you to come down. We're at the local hospital off their campus. She is still being seen. She is okay, but please come down."
It only worried him more. "I'm coming, I'll be there as soon as possible. Just update me please."
"I will, just get here soon. I don't know how long we will be here. Sorry, Mamoru, I have to go." Ami hung up the phone.
Mamoru raced, grabbing clothes, shoes, and his car keys. He didn't remember to pack his own socks. He didn't know how long to pack for. He did not email any of his professors. He didn't care. He could always send a message when he got there. He knew he had a few hours to get there anyways.
…
Minako was quiet. Her blue eyes were still puffy from crying. She had been the first one to discover the scene. She had nervously chewed off her fingernails, the blonde couldn't stand it. She kept replaying the scene over and over again, and she felt guilt swell in her heart. Her room was right next door, how could she not hear anything? Why did she bring that guy upstairs… if she hadn't been distracted…Her mind kept replaying her actions of the night. She was in her own world that night, focused on some random guy to bring home.
She had woken up surprisingly early, she wanted to escort her lover out. She was putting out all her tricks, and got his number of course. She walked out quietly, careful to not wake up anybody around the house. She couldn't wait to tell her girls all about him. He was a serious contender, hot, built, and funny. Minako was never so interested in a guy before. She ran up to go wake up her best friend, so she could spill the beans on a great night.
When she opened Usagi's door, she froze. Usagi was knocked out completely, her body laid almost lifelessly. At first nothing alarmed any bells for her. She just thought her friend was just passed out still, hungover from the night's previous events. Minako scanned the room and saw Usagi's panties on the floor. It made no sense, considering her boyfriend was nowhere nearby. Her body was covered halfway by the sheets. Her sheets had blood on them. The crimson shade jumped out on the white sheets and startled Minako. Maybe it was just her period? Usagi looked dead, her body was pale and she breathed shallowly.
Minako entered the room steadily, not trying to wake her up, and not registering what happened yet. Did she get her period? Why would she throw her panties on the ground like that? That wasn't hygienic. She would definitely need to get some kind of explanation. On further inspection, Minako could see Usagi's face closer. It was red puffy, like she had been crying. Her arms were above her head, and that's when Minako noted the bruises on her arms. Her heart dropped. She couldn't put two and two together or even want to to think about what happened. "Usagi," She immediately shook her friend. Fear took over her heart, she wasn't going to be polite and wake her softly.
The blue eyed woman awoke startled and her blue eyes found Minako's. "Mina-" Usagi let out in a quiet whisper. Her eyes were bloodshot.
"What the hell happened?"
Usagi still felt like she had no energy. Minako was being a little too loud for her liking. Her head was splitting. And her body felt sore everywhere, it was still registering in her own mind. Her eyes widened at the realization. "You can't tell anyone." Usagi quickly retorted. She began to get up, and flipped over her sheets, exposing her body to Minako. Her naked body was in view and her sheets were soiled. Usagi's once pale flawless skin was marked.
Minako gasped at the sight. Usagi had bruises on her thighs, and blood painted her white sheets. "Who did this?" Minako began to cry without even wanting to. In her heart, she knew something horrible happened. She couldn't even say it outloud. She felt horrible. How did this happen? Who would have done something like that? What monster could leave her behind like this?
Usagi sighed, she covered herself. "It doesn't matter…" She sat up and looked at the blonde. "No one can know. They won't even believe it. Who gets…" she stumbled on the words, "attacked in their own home?" Usagi couldn't cry. Her skin felt dry, she needed nourishment. She felt so dehydrated. Plus, she couldn't remember her last meal.
Minako's eyebrows furrowed together. "Don't even say that." She sat next to Usagi, meeting her at eye level. "Who did this to you?" She asked again. She wasn't going to take no for an answer. The blonde was not going to allow someone to get away with it. It was evil. Minako could feel her anger boiling, but she tried to keep it at bay. Right now she just needed to be there for her best friend. She couldn't go crazy yet.
"Demande." Usagi failed to meet her gaze, she felt ashamed even saying it. Her voice was quiet and small. Usagi felt like a total idiot. Minako's eyes widened. Usagi looked down at her hands. "I just need to clean this up and shower." Usagi didn't want to validate this more, she didn't want to make it real even though she knew it was.
"No."
"Mina?"
Minako stook up, with a hard look in her eyes. "I can't tell you what to do Usa, but this is not okay. You can't let it go, you can't pretend it didn't happen. Let's go get a rape kit at the hospital and get this recorded." Usagi winced upon hearing the word. She didn't want to call it that… but what else could she call it. Sex against her will? Sex with her unconscious body? Necrophilia?
"I can't do that Mina…" Usagi feared the type of attention that would bring. If it was her word against his, people would find it ridiculous. They were once a couple. Obviously, they had been seen together numerous occasions. It wasn't the first time she had slept with him. She wouldn't be seen as a victim. She'd be seen as some drunk girl who had a slutty night, cheated on her boyfriend, and regretted it. "No one will believe it. No one can find out." Her heart clenched, especially not Mamarou. He wouldn't forgive her. All she could think about was what everybody else would say or feel. Not for a moment did she paint herself as a victim.
Mina was infuriated. How could her best friend roll over and let someone violate her like that? "We're going. I don't care Usa. Do not shower. I'm getting the girls."
"Please Mina, I can't."
The blonde felt bad. Her best friend was damaged, and it was too deep to let Usagi sweep it away. "Usagi, you can hate me right now. I don't care. We need to go report this. He cannot get away with this."
Tears fell from Usagi's eyes. "N-no one will believe me." She broke her resolve. She thought if she could clean it up and pretend like it didn't happen all would be right in the world. She would be nobody's victim. And no one would have to know about it. She could move on. Finish up her last years, go be with Mamoru and call it a day.
Minako broke at the sight. She felt heavy as her friend cried in her arms. She was in so much pain and there was nothing anybody could do to stop it or fix it. Minako had never been violated that way, she had a healthy relationship with physical intimacy. She never imagined it could be taken or weaponized against a person. She never thought it would happen to anybody she knew. It was stuff you heard on the news, not stuff that happened right next door to her bedroom. "Please Usa," her heart broke for her friend. "I need you to do this. If you decide not to press charges later, it's on you. But we gotta go and make sure you're okay."
Usagi finally conceded to her blonde friend. She knew she had to. She needed a morning after pill, bare minimum. There was no way in hell she would get pregnant like this. "Fine."
"Put on pants, I'm gonna get the girls."
…..
Mamoru arrived at Usagi's home. Ami had texted him as promised. Usagi had gotten home about 10 minutes ago. Ami refused to tell him what went down over the phone. She said it would be better for him to hear it face to face. He honestly wasn't sure what to think… they were acting like Usagi died. There was no way she died, right? He pulled up and parked his vehicle in their driveway. The dark haired man was greeted at the door by a somber Makoto. The brunette's face was sullen, her green eyes were puffy and she had a ghastly look. "Mamoru," She hugged the man. She was grateful he came, "Come in." Her eyes that were normally playful and lively looked down. She wore jeans and a simple oversized hoodie. She hadn't bothered to put on shoes and had run outside barefooted to greet him. She never did that.
Mamrou walked through the doors to see Ami, Zoisite, Nephrite, and Minako sitting at the table, drinking coffee and conversing quietly. They never sat at that table, he was in shock. They always ate on the couch or floor, or bed. They had this running gag that the table was used for storage. It was always messy with leftover projects or purses. The table had never looked so cleanly. "Mamoru," Zoisite came up and greeted him. They all stood up from the table. Zoisite had his blondish brown hair in a top bun. His body language was stressed. He was still in his pajamas. It was out of character for him to be messy. He was already dressed. He was standing next to his girlfriend, Ami. His hand in hers.
"Rei's with her." Nephrite explained, motioning upstairs. His dark hair was down and messy, like always. He wore sweatpants and a t-shirt. He seemed very serious.
"Give them a moment," Ami pleaded. She seemed stressed. Rei was upstairs helping Usagi shower. She hadn't been able to until they left the hospital. Ami knew Mamoru shouldn't see that. It was hard enough for Minako. The blonde was a mess, being up close and personal. Ami herself saw everything as well. She didn't leave Usagi's side at the hospital. She shuddered at the image. The bare minimum she could do was advocate for her friend's tiny shred of privacy and let Rei try to piece her back together again. "They should be done soon." Ami really didn't want to tell him anything. But she was part of the group that voted to call him. He needed to know. And Ami knew it, Usagi needed him. The girls could only do so much to help her. She needed her protector. Ami felt torn about the entire thing but ended up arguing to tell him. She thought honesty was the best.
Mamoru was frustrated. "What happened?" Everyone was so somber and avoiding his eye contact. They seemed like they were hiding something. Whatever it was, had to be bad. Mamoru took a seat at the table with everyone, hoping that they could just relax and start talking.
Just then, Rei walked down. She was typically so full of energy and never afraid of anything. She was graceful as she came down the stairs, she had always been light footed and elegant in all her motions. She had never been caught dead in a pair of sweatpants, but today she was wearing gray sweatpants and a simple tank top. Her dark hair was messily placed in a bun. Her eyes were sullen and her energy was low. "She's getting changed." She announced it to the room before noticing Mamoru's appearance.
She walked into Mamoru's arms and hugged him sweetly. It was out of character for Rei to be affectionate. Makoto took this time to pour him some coffee and bring him a cup. Rei took her seat next to him. He knew something big was coming. They wouldn't be this dramatic for a small thing. He took a sip of the coffee and thanked the brunette for serving him. "As you know we had a party last night." Rei began. "It is very important that you do not make a loud reaction to what I'm telling you." She pointed towards upstairs. Her expressions were extreme. "She is not okay." Her eyes were hard again, like usual. That was code for Rei would kill him if he had a loud reaction. She was giving him permission to be quiet.
He nodded, understanding. He'd play her game, as long as she talked. It seemed like Rei was the only one who wanted to say anything at all. "Start from the beginning." He wanted to know everything. He didn't want to barge upstairs demanding answers from Usagi. Now he was scared.
Nephrite cleared his throat. "Dude, we had the party and everything was going great. Everyone was having fun and drinking." Nephrite was one of the boys. He wanted to tell Mamoru on the phone himself. He thought Mamoru would want to know so he could come here and kill Demande. He voted to tell him immediately. He was ready to back him up and hunt the rapist down. He thought not saying anything was enabling it. He was super pro telling Mamrou.
"It was a great party." Zoisite interjected. His strengthened his grip on Ami's hand. Zoisite was more sensitive. He didn't know if telling Mamoru would do more harm. Usagi didn't need to be worried about the status of her relationship now. He felt horrible about the entire thing. He saw Usagi a sister, especially because she helped him and Ami get together.
Makoto sighed. "Everything went well, people started leaving and we were cleaning up. Usagi had a lot to drink and she got really sick last night. Rei took her upstairs and put her to sleep." The group got quiet. No one wanted to rip this band aid off. Some of them debated telling him, some of them thought Usagi should have done it. They were split on the decision. Some of the girls thought it was better to do it for her, so he could comfort her immediately. Makoto was amongst the vote of not telling him. She did not want to be the one to say it. She didn't know how Usagi would react to seeing him now. She just didn't know what to do. The truth was none of them did. They could argue about it all day and change their minds all day. She wasn't sure that doing this was the right thing.
Minako decided to take the lead on this. No one wanted to be the one to tell him. She wanted to explain this delicately so he didn't think it was something it wasn't. "Mamrou, do you remember when Usagi was dating that guy? Demande?"
Mamrou nodded, already not liking where this was going. He knew all about that creep. Usagi told him everything. He did not like the idea of her even knowing him, being in class with him. He didn't like the fact that they were friendly after breaking up. He didn't even like that Usagi was with him to begin with. He already felt worked up. He hated the guy. He would have hated anybody that took her from him, honestly. "He was there?" Mamrou questioned, not liking this one bit. His mood was already turning. Just hearing his name made Mamoru sick.
"Yes. We invited everybody in our class. We didn't think much of it. We didn't even know he was there," Rei stated. It was the truth. They invited everybody. It was a big party. They didn't know who was coming or not coming. It wasn't very private, people were in and out all night. Half the people that crashed there weren't even accounted for. They were all wasted and didn't even think this could even happen. No one thought to check or look out for this sort of thing.
"Did she sleep with him?" Everybody froze at this bold question. Mamoru had enough with the build up. He didn't want an exposition on how Usagi ruined their relationship. Their expressions were mixed and Mamoru couldn't place them. "She should've told me herself then." Mamoru got up ready to leave. He was pissed now. He couldn't believe she wouldn't be woman enough to tell him herself. He was already thinking about what a mistake it was to get back together. Why drag him all the way out here?
"No you idiot." Minako whispered loudly. She didn't want to scream at him, knowing Usagi was upstairs and could potentially hear this conversation. She didn't want Usagi beating herself up more. Her friend was in a serious psychological state that she did not want to worsen. That was partly why she was pro telling Mamoru everything. She knew he would find out eventually anyways. She wanted him called so he could take care of their girl.
"Then what?" Mamoru turned around furious. He was over it. He wanted to march upstairs and demand answers. He hated the she had her guard dogs here talking to him.
"He raped her." Rei blurted out. The room was silent. And Mamoru was in shock. He felt like someone had punched him. That's why they were acting so strangely. That's why Usagi was upstairs alone. That's why they needed him to come. He didn't know if he should hunt the guy down and kill him or run to Usagi and comfort her. "She was asleep, he got into her room and fucking raped her in the middle of night." Rei reiterated. Her purple eyes were hard, and her face was tight. Her body was on fire just saying it aloud. She hated this. She hated being the bad guy to break the news to him. But someone had to do it. She didn't want to see him being miserable and jumping to conclusions. She didn't want to tell him, for the record, she voted not to tell him anything until Usagi did. She thought it was best to come from the victim, when Usagi was ready of course.
"We got a rape kit done, a full std pannel test, and the morning after pill for her." Ami chimed in. She wanted him to know everything. Usagi wasn't ready to be picked and prodded. She would answer everything for her. Ami stayed in the room with Usagi during the procedure. "I stayed with her. She took the pill. We have to go back in about a week, the results will be in for STDS..." The blue haired girl put her hand on Mamoru's. She wanted to comfort him more, but she didn't know how he'd react. She was genuinely sorry, but he needed to know everything. She wasn't going to sugar coat it.
"We went to the police too." Makoto filled in his next question without him asking. "She filed a report." The brunette drank her coffee. "She needs you." Her eyes met him earnestly. She wanted him to whisk her troubles away and erase the damage so badly.
Mamoru swallowed. He wasn't expecting this.
"We will be down here if you need anything. Just be there for her." Minako motioned upstairs. Mamoru took his cues from the blonde. He finally went upstairs, afraid of what he'd encounter. He already knew this house like the back of his hand. He went to her room, familiar with the layout already.
He wasn't ready, but he knew it wasn't about him right now. The dark haired man walked into a picture of Usagi sleeping. Her hair was wet and let down, she was covered by a pink blanket. She was out cold. He didn't want to wake her. He walked towards her bed, and studied her. Her face was swollen. She had been crying. It hurt him to see her like that. He sat at her desk, waiting. He didn't know what to say to her. What if he said the wrong thing to her? What if he made it worse? How could he ever fix it? He didn't know how to react right now. He just knew he wanted to hold her. Should he crawl into her bed? Would it scare her?
She stirred in her sleep and tossed over. The blanket exposed her blue and back arms. He gasped. He knew it happened, but seeing it was different. He couldn't comprehend it. He started to beat himself up. He should have been there. He shouldn't have let her party alone. He should have been with her on her birthday. He felt like the worst boyfriend. He was selfish and chose his school work over protecting her…
Mamoru couldn't take it. "Usako." He said her name loudly. She jolted up and her eyes opened. She looked at him, with a sad look on her face. "I'm here." He sat on her bed.
"You're here." She softly let out. Her eyes met his, and he saw that she was not okay. She embraced him. "I'm sor-"
"No." He cut her off, holding her tightly in his arms. "I'm so sorry, Usagi." He held her, hoping that him being there could lessen the hurt in her eyes.
Usagi broke. She let herself cry. "I am, though." She tried to explain. "I didn't want this to ruin us." It broke him to hear her say that.
He felt so bad and guilty. "I should have come, it isn't your fault. Nothing you could ever do would ruin us." He smelled her hair, memorizing it in his brain. He truly loved this woman. "What can I do?" he asked her. He just wanted to see her smile.
She looked up at him, breaking their embrace. "Just stay with me, please. Just for tonight. I know you have to get back… I just need rest."
He nodded. The two lovers crawled into her bed. He held her body close to his, and waited for her to fall back to sleep. He kept replaying Rei's words in his mind. 'he raper her'... He didn't know how to fix it. He didn't know how to make it better. He just knew that he wanted to. He decided not to push her too hard today to talk about it. He let her sleep. They had the rest of their lives to talk about it when she wanted to.
