So, some months back I started watching Game of Thrones (I've avoided the last two seasons because my friends who have seen those have told me all the horror stories). And I think it was around season two where my brain went 'hey, wouldn't it be cool if Rory was around during this'. And here we kind of are.
While I do love the GOT/ASOIAF universe, I have a love/hate relationship with the fandom, so I'm setting some ground rules right away.
If you expect me to bash Sansa, turn back now. We love Sansa Stark in this house. Queen in the North!
If you expect me to fawn over Dany, turn back now. I honestly never bought into the Dany/Targaryen hype and while her descent into full on villainy was poorly executed to say the least, I saw the writing on the wall way back in season one.
If you expect me to bash Catelyn, turn back now. I'm neutral on the character for the most part, but I find the hate for her ridiculous. Yes, she was 'mean to Jon' (a laughable reason to hate her, because she didn't act any differently than how any other wife of a lord or king would have acted and probably treated him better than most would have in her position), that makes her a flawed character, not the devil incarnate.
And if you're expecting me to glamorize the toxic incest that is Jamie/Cersei, you really should turn back now. Really hate how the show made Jamie into Cersei's whipping boy as opposed to the books.
Will try to update this as often as I can, but it depends on time, other stories and inspiration.
Thank you to Aragorn II Elessar for his suggestion for the title.
Now, with further ado, Geronimo!
TARDIS, 2011
Rory stood next to Amy, both of them drinking some tea as they watched The Doctor fiddle with the TARDIS console as he charted in the next destination.
It had been a week since Berlin, two days since the whole mess with George. The Doctor had been trying to take their minds of everything by taking them to the most exciting places he could think of.
Rory appreciate The Doctor's attempts to take their mind off everything that happened with…Melody? River? Whatever. He knew Amy did as well, but no matter how many exciting places The Doctor took them, Rory doubted it could fill the hole left by the loss of their daughter.
"There we go," Rory was broken out of his thoughts by The Doctor's excited shout. "Geronimo!"
"And where are we going this time, Raggedy Man?" Amy asked with a raised eyebrow.
"You'll love it, Pond. It's a planet where the tress are alive and can change shape," The Doctor said excitedly.
"That…doesn't even surprise me anymore," Rory said with a sigh as the TARDIS took off.
"It's very cold though, so grab some coats," The Doctor advised them.
Not long after, the TARDIS landed and the group, dressed in winter coats and snow boots, exited the time machine.
"Well, it's snowy, I'll give you that," Amy mentioned as she looked around.
They were standing in what seemed to be a courtyard with a large castle that had seen better days looming over it. The Castle looked like it had been attacked and damaged some time ago. Rory looked around the courtyard, feeling some kind of familiarity as The Doctor spoke behind him.
"This isn't the planet. I don't know where this is," The Doctor said in disbelief.
"You're not a particularly good time traveler, are you?" Rory asked blankly and The Doctor looked at him, insulted.
"It's not my fault! The TARDIS must think we're need here for something," The Doctor said before heading back into the TARDIS.
As Amy followed The Doctor, Rory looked around the courtyard before looking up the castle, wondering why it seemed so familiar.
"Winterfell," The Doctor said, standing at the scanner and Rory whipped his head back towards him in disbelief. "This is the ruins of Winterfell. It was a kingdom several centuries before your time, ruled by the Starks until they were killed by enemies of the crown in the 1,400s."
"Why'd it bring us here?" Amy wondered.
"Not sure Pond, why don't you and Rory go get some food while I try and figure that," The Doctor said distractedly.
"Not a chance. Right Rory?" Amy said as she crossed her arms, hoping her husband would back her up.
When there was no response from the nurse, Amy and The Doctor turned back towards the doorway, seeing Rory was gone.
"Always wondering off," The Doctor grumbled, although he was surprised it had been Rory this time.
Rory walked along the castle, looking at it with old eyes, seeing ghosts of familiar faces before stopping towards the base of a high tower. Rory knelt on the ground, his hands searching for something. Finding it, he tried opening it but rust had welled it shut. Rory got to his feet as The Doctor and Amy spotted him.
"Rory? What are you doing?" Amy called out to her husband.
Without answering, Rory kicked the wooden doors, hard and they heard the sound of breaking wood. Rory pulled the two wooden doors open and entered as Amy and The Doctor followed him, seeing he was walking down a stairwell.
"Oi! Rory, what are you doing?" Amy called out, bewildered by her husband's behavior.
"I need to see something," Rory called back.
"And how do you plan to see it in the dark?" The Doctor called out.
As if in answer, Rory grabbed something off the walls. Running it on the wall, it lit on fire and it was revealed to be a torch.
"How'd you know that was there?" Amy asked confused as The Doctor seemed to realize something.
"Rory, have you…been to Winterfell? With the Pandorica?" The Doctor called out hesitantly.
Rory didn't answer, continuing to walk down the stairwell. Amy and The Doctor exchanged a wary look before following Rory down the stairs.
They reached him as Rory finished walking down the steps. They were now standing in a long corridor. Rory continued walking and, as they followed him, they saw there were statues there. More than that, there were entire sections where a statue stood.
"Rory, is this… a crypt?" The Doctor asked wearily.
"The crypts of Winterfell. It's where the Starks of Winterfell are laid to rest. At least until Winterfell was sacked by its enemies," Rory said, a dark crossing his face.
Amy and The Doctor silently exchanged a look, The Doctor's earlier question all but answered. Rory had definitely been here before.
For a long time, they just followed Rory, who led them deeper and deeper into the crypt. Finally, he stopped, turning and walking over to a statue. Amy and The Doctor followed Rory, stopping behind him and looking up at the statue that had Rory's attention.
It was of a woman. She was quite beautiful, yet she seemed carry herself regally, like she'd been born to rule. Yet she had a hard look in her eyes, like she'd seen a lot of pain in her life and had been forced to grow up too fast.
Amy looked over at her husband, seeing him look up at the statue with that look he'd always get when he was thinking about all the years he'd spent guarding the Pandorica. But there was something else there as well when he looked at the statue. A mix of fondness and sadness. The same look he had when he looked at River, Amy realized with a start.
"Did you know her Rory?" The Doctor asked after a moment and Rory nodded after a beat.
"Yes. Yes I did. Her name was Sansa Stark. And I knew her quite well," Rory said quietly before beginning to tell his story.
Winterfell, 1,500 years earlier
Night
In his bedchambers, Ned Stark, Lord of Winterfell, silently considered what Lysa's letter had said as his wife and Maester Luwin bickered behind him.
"You swore the king an oath, my lord," Luwin reminded him.
"He's spent half his life fighting Robert's wars. He owes him nothing now," Catelyn disagreed before approaching Ned. "Your father and brother rode south once, on a king's demand."
Ned remembered quiet well. It had resulted in the murders of both, as well as a war that shook the foundation of Westeros. She had a very good point, as she usually did.
"A different time, a different king," Luwin argued.
"You are both right," Ned spoke, quelling any arguments. "I cannot leave Robert surrounded by enemies. But I cannot go to King's Landing without someone I can trust, someone Robert will allow to stay in King's Landing."
"And do you know such a man?" Catelyn challenged.
"Aye, I do," Ned said, a thought coming to him. "I need parchment and a quill."
Lands south of the Runestone, a few weeks later
Morning
In a father spacious yet modest house, Rory Williams was sharpening his sword when he heard a sound. Looking towards the window sill, he saw a raven perked there, a letter tied to its leg. Frowning before putting his sword down, Rory walked over to the window, opening it and gently ushering the raven inside. Giving it a small piece of fruit fruit, Rory untied the letter. Opening it, Rory began to read.
Rory,
It has been years since we last spoke, since before the Rebellion. I regret that we must do so now, under these circumstances.
Robert is in danger. My wife received a letter from her sister, saying Jon Arryn was murdered by the Lannisters. I'm sorry I must inform you of his death in this manner, I know the two of you were friends.
I'm sure you know Robert is married to Tywin's daughter; her brothers also reside in King's Landing. Robert has asked me to be his hand and, although I do not want to, I must in order to protect him. But I cannot walk into enemy territory with just my men.
I need your help to protect Robert, Rory. There's no one else I can trust that Robert would allow to stay in King's Landing. Please old friend, I need your help.
Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell, Warden of the North and Hand of the King.
Rory stared down at the words on the parchment for a long moment before sighing, running his hand through his hair.
Not after, he walked outside, behind the back of the house. Kneeling on the ground, Rory found what he was looking for, grabbing a short chain. Pulling it, part of the ground came up with it, revealing a stairwell underneath. Grabbing a touch, Rory walked down the steps into a large chamber. And in the center of it stood the Pandorica.
"What do I do Amy?" Rory asked, staring at the Pandorica as though hoping it would offer him an answer. "I want to help Ned, I do. But I made a promise to protect you, stand guard over you all these years. What would you do?"
Rory received no answer, but he had not expected one. However, he knew, deep down he knew what Amy would do. She would always help her friends, no matter what.
"I guess I'm going to King's Landing," Rory said after a moment, hoping he would not regret this.
And there's the first chapter. Hope you all enjoyed, until next time.
