A/N If anyone feels this Xander is not reacting how Xander in the show might have reacted, please remember, this Xander grew up very differently than that Xander. If you're interested in reading more, by the end of the week I will have posted two additional stories in this au. The Protectors: In-between, covering the time in-between the end of The Protectors and Faith and the beginning of this story. As well as The Protectors: Prologue, covering the Pack's training years and those kisses Xander liked to steal from Cordelia. It includes details regarding how this Xander came to be raised by his Uncle Rory, a former Marine and demon hunter, who helped to train the Pack, and his maternal grandmother, Abigail Morris.
Now on with this story.
The next night Xander and Cordelia had invited her parents, his Uncle Rory and Grandma over to announce their news. The only one not happy with the news was Cordelia's stepmother. She knew nothing of their status as Protectors or of the nightlife. She had thought their getting married at their age was too soon and now they were announcing they were having a baby. They weren't even twenty years old yet, she didn't understand how her husband or the others could be so excited about this. They were too young for such responsibility. 'But try telling her husband that', she thought sourly. 'Why is he so excited about this?'
Unfortunately, for Xander and Cordelia and their enhanced hearing, they could hear her parents arguing as they left. They tried not let it put a damper on their own excitement. After all, telling Madeleine Chase everything she didn't know about Sunnydale was up to her husband Charles, not anyone else, and he refused to do it, certain she'd never be able to accept it anyway and that she'd likely cause problems. So they would just have to deal with her attitude. Especially considering that under different circumstances, her concern might have been warranted.
Of course it wasn't like they didn't have other things to concern themselves with. Like the weird glowy demon who attacked Giles and Faith, while she was reporting on her patrol with Kyle and Rhonda the night before.
They had come across some weird little hobbity creature that ran away from them. None of them recognized the species and Kyle was discussing it with Xander and Grandma, while Faith was filling Giles in, while they were walking to the Magic Box, his and Jenny's new business.
It wasn't until later that evening when they realized there was another problem. Jenny came over to Xander and Cordelia's to tell them that Giles was acting strangely. He was smoking, drinking and playing his old records. He was speaking in a thicker English accent than usual as well.
They had decided to go see him when they got a call from Faith, that she and Giles were attacked again, while at the Magic Box, by the same demon. She had killed it. She told them it shot at them with something, oh and that Giles was acting weird. She reported he was wearing a suit and acting as she put it very 'stick up his English Channel'.
"It almost sounds like Giles has developed a split personality." Xander said. "We need to get to the shop and check out this demon that keeps attacking them. Maybe it's done something to Giles.
Jenny and Cordelia agreed and they drove over to the shop. Faith was holding the device the demon had shot at them with and staring at Giles. Who was indeed, wearing a suit, and a tie, while drinking tea and lecturing her rather pompously about her poor technique in battling the demon.
Xander stared at him too and then said. "He reminds me of Quentin Travers, that idiot from the Council that tried to make you do that Cruciamentum test. And that's not a good thing."
Proper Giles immediately began a lecture on the importance of adhering to traditions. They tuned him out after about five seconds.
"He's not acting at all like he was earlier at home." Jenny said. "This is completely different."
"I have not been home today, my dear, I do not know to what you are referring." Proper Giles said.
Xander immediately grabbed his walky and called Tor. "Go to Giles', see if there's anyone there, if so bring them here. We may have a big problem with Giles."
He then started calling everyone else in so they could research the demon and it's weird weapon. Willow arrived with her laptop and began inputting information into the search feature of her program, looking for anything that could lead to an answer.
Tor arrived about a half an hour later with another surprise. A second Giles, who was indeed smoking and drinking. While wearing a white t-shirt and jeans. Since when did Giles even own or wear jeans?
The two immediately began to accuse each other of being imposters. Neither was acting like Giles normally acted and both Jenny and Cordelia were getting upset. Jenny because which one was her husband? It took Xander a moment to realize Cordelia might be having some baby related hormone issues and vowed never to say that out loud, since he'd heard pregnant woman could be a little touchy about the subject. He was trying to calm them both down and not getting very far when Willow announced she'd found something.
'Oh, thank God,' he thought. "What is it, Willow?" He asked aloud.
"This rod, it's used to separate a person into two halves. I don't think the demon meant to hit Giles. I think he meant to hit Faith. It says here, that it can be used to separate a person into their weak side and their strong sides. If it kill one side, both die. If it hit Faith, it would get weak human, Slayer stronger. Kill the weak human part, the Slayer part dies as well."
"Is there a way to reverse it?" Xander asked.
"Yes, there's an incantation." She showed it to Jesse, who immediately said it. And just like that there's one Giles again. Wearing a suit and tie. He immediately pulled the tie off. "Bloody hell, I hate ties."
A sentiment that all the guys could agree with.
