Two weeks later, mid August, 2000:
It was Faith, Kyle and Rhonda's turn to patrol Sunnydale's warehouse district. Since Cordelia wasn't patrolling anymore, Faith, instead of rotating with the Pack, had been partnering with Xander for patrols, but he was at home with Cordelia tonight.
Fortunately for Faith, Kyle and Rhonda, the Sunnydale warehouse district wasn't that large an area. Since Sunnydale's warehouses had never been part of the revitalizing efforts in other cities that saw these old structures turned into offices and apartment buildings and were still being used to store supplies for various businesses around town, they were empty of people at night. Which made finding vampires trying to nest in them, much easier. They had dusted several and Kyle had noted the stupidity of creatures that kept trying to use an area they knew was regularly patrolled by the Pack, when they ran across a human.
A night security officer, which, frankly was a suicide job in Sunnydale. Must be new to town. Unfortunately, he probably won't get be an old timer in this town, either. Knowing he probably wouldn't believe them, they opted not to tell him about the vampires and Faith told him they were just looking for a place to have a threesome. 'It is so much fun,' she thought, 'to see people try to process a thought like that.'
After a moment, he told them to find a hotel room and sent them on their way. Only to call them back a second later and tell them they had dropped something. Turned out to be a weird glowing ball of some sort. Faith made a split second decision to take it with them. Later, she told Kyle and Rhonda, it was setting off her Slaydar. Something about it wigged her out. "You're not the only one," Rhonda said, looking at the glowing ball. "Something's not setting right about it with me either."
"I'm getting a weird vibe from it too." Kyle said. "Let's see what Willow and Giles can make of it. Or Tara and Jenny. Maybe Grandma has some ideas. Either way, I think it's time to call it a night. I'll let Xander know about that thing."
The other two agreed and Kyle pulled out his walky and called Xander, who was at home with Cordelia, who had been having a difficult day. He agreed with taking the glowing ball thing to the Research Team and them heading home. "Good work, guys. See you, tomorrow."
After getting off the walky Xander returned to the couch, where Cordelia was sitting. She'd been cranky all day, not her fault, as she had discovered, her usually graceful gait was already changing. She kept bumping into things and misjudging turns. Finally, she had given up and settled on the couch.
"Everything okay?" She asked, as he picked up her feet and went back to rubbing them. Something that had her purring like a kitten. Which was weird since she was Bonded to a wolf.
"Yeah, Faith and them ran across a human security guard in the warehouse district. He found some sort of glowing ball, that's setting off their senses. They're going to take it to the Research Team tomorrow, see what they can make of it. They didn't mention anything evil or demonic about their feelings, just weird. Hopefully not a big deal. You feeling any better?"
"The foot rubs helping. I'm just feeling out of sorts, I guess. I hadn't thought about having difficulty navigating my own home, especially not so soon. When I resemble a beached whale maybe, but I'm not even showing yet. Bumping into things is annoying."
"We could try rearranging the furniture a little, see if that helps. Otherwise, it's probably just something you'll have to deal with. And I doubt you'll look like a beached whale. To hot and gorgeous for that."
"You're just saying that because you're hoping to get laid."
"Is it working?"
"Yes."
Xander turned off the TV and they retired for the night.
The next day Faith presented the glowing ball to Giles, who promised to research it as soon as he had a few moments free. The Magic Box was a little overrun with customers at the moment, so he secured it in his office safe and hoped it didn't melt anything in there and went back to work.
Willow and Tara arrived and began helping out. They took turns at the cash register and helping customers find what they were looking for, while Giles filed them in on the glowing ball. It wasn't a lot to go on, but Willow input search parameters into her program and went back to helping.
Hopefully they find something eventually.
