In a rundown apartment in Central City; a large man was cladding himself in old black coloured GUN body armor. On the TV was an sensationalist news show starring an angry pundit whose popularity peaked during the Charlemagne administration. "So to 'celebrate' ten years of when that weak willed spineless coward Bushnell surrender to those animals to end the War that we should have kept on fighting to win; the festivities were just so happened to be attacked by robots said to be the work of a dead scientist. Who gets hailed as a hero for saving the day; an orphan teenager who runs real fast and now we have the governments hailing this brat as some sort of 'superhero'! I have gotten sources that this brat named Sonic is a known troublemaker and definitely not someone who should be invited here as a celebrity!"
The man went to a table where he picked up a specialised rifle after pushing away the rent due notices and bills that laid on top of it.
Sonic sighed as he was in a human air transport vehicle along with Sally in her new mission outfit as well as royal guards of the Kingdom of Acorn. "Are we almost there yet, this is so BBBOOOORRRRRIIINNNNGGGGG..." Sonic groaned as Sally shook her head at him with her arms folded as he had been like that for the whole flight; clearly he didn't like staying still for long periods of time.
"We will be there soon Sonic and please behave; this is your first time in the United Federation, let alone out of the Island. I hope you realise how important a good example will be; it won't do you or the Kingdom any good if you damage your reputation with the humans." Sally reminded Sonic and he gave a sigh; he was being invited for a public appearance in Central City.
Soon they arrived at their destination and there were representatives of the United Federation there to greet them with a smile; the main one leaning down to shake their hands and soon they were escorted to the convention hall for his appearance.
Sonic and Sally looked around at Central City with the buildings much taller than anything that they had seen before with only the palace able to compare; plus all the taller humans roaming the streets along with a few Mobians. Most humans that they had ever seen before as there were humans on Westside Island on business or having moved there after things started to settle in the aftermath of the War.
They sat down on the table and then the doors were opened up for the line of people coming in for autographs and pictures. There were a group of excited teenage girls and Sonic winked at them causing Sally to glare at him; "What? Just some fun and besides it's nothing serious; they are humans and we're Mobians." Sonic told her.
It continued on with someone asking Sally "Princess Sally? King Elias's sister? You are joining Sonic on his adventures?"
The confused man clearly barely recognised Sally in her outfit from the news footage and pictures he had seen; Sally put on a smile and said "yes Sonic is my friend and I want to help him out on his adventures; putting my own skills and training to use!"
"Okay; I just didn't think the Princess would want to be Sonic's sidekick." replied the man and Sally was taken aback by what he said.
"Sidekick? SIDEKICK? I AM NO ONE's SIDEKICK!" Sally ranted and the guy quickly apologised and left.
"Calm down Sal; you don't want to set an bad example and harm your reputation as Princess of the Kingdom of Acorn by acting out." Sonic said with a cheesy smile and Sally calmed down but not before crossing her arms and glaring at him for using her words against her.
It continued on but then there was grenades sent down on the ground causing a panic and Sonic and Sally helped the security get everyone outside to safety; while pushing away broke down debris. Sonic then dodged gun fire as jumped down from his vantage point was the man in the GUN uniform wearing a ski mask.
"The so called hero Sonic the Hedgehog; I know what you truly are: a runt playing hero while everyone has forgotten about real heroes! You and your girlfriend act all high and mighty while true sons of humanity had to suffer being brought under your kind's heel! I am going to fix that starting with your deaths!" the man shouted as he threw grenades at the walls causing Sonic to have to run make sure no one was nearby which included the guards who were attempting to storm the man while Sally was dodging and summoned her wrist blades with him dodging her attacks.
Sally managed to grab onto his mask and pulled it revealing an angry looking messy haired man with a long beard and missing his left eye. Security and police officers came in and noticed the man with Sonic running to tackle the man but he used some sort of smoke bomb with Sonic almost ending up crashing into Sally.
Soon medical personnel were checking over the people there with officers sweeping the area; then came one of the representatives of the United Federation with a laptop; "We quickly got a picture from the security feed and there was a match soon enough." the agent said showing the GUN military profile of Hugo Brass with a photo showing a younger version of him with both his eyes and it saying that he had been dishonourably discharged.
"Hugo Brass; I thought he looked familiar and I haven't heard about him in a long time. To think that a decade ago he was the talk of the nation; interviews, endorsement deals, talk show appearances and he had a book deal set along with going to have his own reality show after the War ended." muttered a security guard in shock as Sonic and Sally looked confused.
"How exactly did a soldier get the full celebrity lifestyle? I know war heroes and soldiers are respected and it was during wartime but this treatment as if he was some A-list movie star?" Sonic asked and the representative sighed.
"You get this treatment after you were the one who pulled the trigger on the shot that killed the enemy's King." explained the representative taking Sonic and Sally off guard.
"This was the man who assassinated my father..." Sally asked mouth wide open and the representative nodded his head with Sonic putting a hand on her shoulder nervously; realising that this must be heard finding out that the man that she had just fought killed her father.
"He was Princess Sally and got celebrated by Charlemagne, his administration and their supporters as a hero with his own medal ceremony. A special forces task force soldier became the talk of the town; he was a special guest in the meeting of Charlemagne's staff where they were attacked and taken prisoner. The Chaos Emerald blast got him caught in the debris and he ended up losing his eye and his arms; needing robotic replacement appendages. He woke up finding himself without his arms and that by the time he had awakened; that his government had surrendered... He snapped; gone on angry tirades and picked fights with those that accepted the outcome. Got thrown out with all his deals and appearances cancelled; his agent quit he now has a record of having been arrested for various bar fights." The representative continued to explain as Sally stared at the photo of her father's killer.
"When I had my lessons about the War Crimes Tribunal; I found out that Elias decided not to press for the one who killed dad to be charged. I confronted Elias about it and he told me that the man was letting his anger and bitterness ruin his life and he said that it would be more than punishment enough just to let him destroy himself; I never fully agreed with it..." Sally said wiping away a tear.
"Don't worry Sal; if he decides to attack we will get him! We are awesome and he is just a washed up brute!" Sonic reassured her and she felt better.
There was a warrant soon out for Brass's arrest and Sonic and Sally went back on the craft to take them back home. However from the bathroom out came Brass having sneaked in and took care of the guards before he started to fire at Sally with her dodging and Sonic then began spinning into a ball to launch at Brass's stomach.
Sally with her wrist blades had cut at the arm section of his old uniform and they could see his robotic appendages; "You know when I ended your daddy's pathetic life; they hailed me as a hero who put us on path to quickly win the War! Everyone was calling me a hero; especially the President who was leading us to victory! However I woke up; it seems that it didn't take long for people to fall in line and change their tune! The President was being lambasted as a war criminal and I no longer was being called a hero! I bet that in schools children of our species are being taught that Charlemagne was a monster and spun some story saying that us humans were the ones that fired the first shot! They say that history being written by the victors and all that!" Brass said as he ran out of bullets and his firing had damaged the craft.
Brass took out a switchblade and charged at Sonic but he easily dodged and charged at Brass sending him to the damaged wall and he ended up falling out with Sonic and Sally catching his hands with the guards trying to pull them in. "Give up and surrender; you are only making this worse for yourself!" Sonic shouted and Brass glared at them harshly.
"Surrender to your kind? I am not Bushnell..." Brass retorted as he managed to get his hands out of their grasp allowing himself to fall to the water below.
Elias was briefed about what had happened in Central City through messages and was there to make sure that his sister and Sonic arrived back safely and then found out what had happened. "I didn't get a look at the soldiers sent to kill our father; I focused on trying to wake him up sure that he couldn't be dead... Crying as I was pulled away... When I became King I was certain that after we won the war I would make sure that the ones who did the deed paid the ultimate price! However when we were charging the war criminals; I found out about how Brass was ruining his own life in his anger so I thought it would be more punishment to let him be than just toss him into a cell he would never leave like the others..." Elias sadly explained.
"He was certainly so lost in his anger that he refused to let us save him..." Sally commented shaking his head.
"Well he made his choices and at least that's one less threat to worry about..." Sonic said trying to think of the bright side of this whole ordeal and they guessed that was a good point.
Brass woke up to find himself on top of a table in a red and black coloured lab with his robotic appendages removed; "Wait... You're Robotnik!" Brass said as he noticed Robotnik overlooking him.
"My reputation precedes me and so does your's Mr Brass; be grateful that my machines were able to fish you out of the water before you drowned. Though your appendages were damaged beyond repair." Robotnik explained but put on a smirk. "Let's consider that a blessing in disguises as I can easily have them replaced with superior arms; make you strong enough that you can get your revenge on Sonic and the Princess along with the entire Kingdom of Acorn! Join the Eggman Empire and we can both help ourselves get our vengeance; I can even fit you with a new eye!" Robotnik offered and Brass replied with a grin.
The joke bit with the girls was inspired by a scene from the storyline adapting Sonic Adventure 1 where Sonic playing guitar by a pool attracts attention from nearby humans; I can understand that Ken had the difficult task of having to make an adaptation of a game from using what they could translate of the story from an important Japanese copy of the game (since Sega wanted them to adapt the game but wouldn't provide the resource material to actually do so) but this is what he decided to add in along with the tribe of cannibal cats.
