Chapter 2: The Heart of The Matter

Sid sits at his desk at 1PP reviewing files. He picks up one detailing the requisition request for a new office door, file cabinet and lock box for Sergeant Reagan's Office. At first his face crinkles in confusion but as he reads his eyes go wide, his mouth drops open and if one were to walk into his office at that moment they might actually see steam coming out of his ears. He picks up his phone and hits a button "I'll be at the 5-4 meeting with Sergeant Reagan." He huffs out before hanging up, grabbing his jacket and walking out of his office.

…..

"Okay hopefully we won't be too long." Jamie tells his brother as he pulls his jacket on while standing in his office at the 5-4 "Can you manage here all your lonesome?" he jokes.

"A unit of four…" Danny counters "…and I'm the only one left actually working."

"Not true." Jamie rejects as he picks up his keys and cell phone "Baez is in court. She's working. Just enjoy the calm while it lasts – work on some cold cases."

"I know, I know…" Danny relents as he and Jamie walk out into the bullpen "Because you do remember I have actually been doing this longer then you right?" He tacks on in an amused jab causing Jamie to narrow his eyes at his brother.

Danny laughs at his successful ribbing "Don't worry, just go." He insists "And I want to see that ultra sound pic of my new niece or nephew when you get back."

Hearing that sentence causes Jamie to smile "You got it." He adds before turning to walk away but he only takes three steps when Lieutenant Gormley appears walking towards him.

"NO!" Gormley rejects at seeing Jamie about to leave "You're not going anywhere. Office now!" He commands of Jamie before throwing Danny a disgruntled look then walking past him to enter Jamie's office first.

Jamie turns and looks at Danny with questioning eyes.

"NOW!" Gormley barks.

As much as he doesn't want to, Jamie dutifully turns and heads back into his office.

Gormley shuts the door behind him the second Jamie enters "Nice door." he tosses at Jamie "Is it new?"

Jamie briefly squeezes his eyes shut in realization thinking why now…

Eddie nervously sits in the waiting room of the doctor's office by herself. She looks at her watch then at the door "Jamie where are you?" she mutters to herself before sending him a text.

….

Jamie sits in his office trying desperately to focus on what Lieutenant Gormley - who is pacing in front of him - is saying but he keeps glancing at the clock on the wall. His eyes dart to his phone on his desk when it vibrates with a message. Jamie doesn't need to look at it to know who its from – he knows its from his wife asking where the hell he is. "Lieutenant…" Jamie interrupts as he starts to reach for his phone "Could I just…"

"No!" Gormley rejects "You may not!"

Sighing, Jamie reluctantly pulls his hand back.

…..

Pacing outside Jamie's office, Danny stops when his cell phone dings with a message. He pulls it out of his pocket to see a message from Eddie…

E: Where's Jamie? He's not here!

D: In office with Gormley.

Danny's cell phone rings.

"What do you mean in office with Gormley?" Eddie's voice demands "He hasn't even left yet? Danny I'm going to be called in any minute! I need him here!"

"I'm sorry Eddie." Danny apologizes "But Gormley just showed up as he was about to leave and he did not look happy!"

"What? Why?"

"I have no idea but he ordered Jamie back into his office and they've been in there behind closed doors ever since."

"Well do something!" Eddie insists.

"Like what?" Danny counters "I have no authority to just barge in there and interrupt!"

Eddie closes her eyes and tries to keep the tears from forming in them. In her mind she knows Danny is right "I know. I know…" She apologizes in frustration "I'm sorry."

"If it's any consolation…" Danny offers "…he looks like he's about to have a coronary in there because he's still here and not there with you."

Eddie sighs knowing if he could be there with her, he would be "I… I guess I'll just have to do this without him." She decides in dejection.

"Eddie…" Danny starts.

"No…" She interrupts "…I'll be fine, don't worry about it." She adds before just hanging up.

Danny looks down at his disconnected phone then up at the window to see his brother fidget in his seat as he again glances at the clock.

It's so frustrating to Danny that his baby brother is finally getting the chance to be a father – something he knows he's always wanted and he is about to miss one of the most important milestones of the journey – the first doctor's visit. Knowing that he can't let that happen, Danny does something a Reagan NEVER does…

Taking a deep breath, Danny dials a number and waits.

"Danny what's up?" Frank greets at the other end of the call.

"Hi Dad." Danny rushes out "Look I have never asked you to pull strings before and this isn't even that, but what I do need, is for you to call Lieutenant Gormley back to your office."

"What?" Frank questions completely surprised and taken aback by the request "Why?"

"I can't tell you that Dad." Danny admits "It's not my place. But I can tell you that you'll find out soon and when you do, you will understand why I am asking this but Dad, I NEED you to do this and I need you to do this RIGHT NOW! Please! It's time sensitive!"

Knowing his children, Franks knows Danny wouldn't be asking this of him without a damn good reason.

"There is no crime or rule breaking involved here Dad…" Danny adds "…I promise. I just really need you to do this."

Maybe it was old age or the tone in Danny's voice but Frank takes what his oldest son is telling him to heart "Okay." He relents "I'll call him back."

"Thank you Dad." Danny breathes out in relief before hanging up and the second he does his eyes shift to Jamie's office window again "Come on, come on…" He urges as he looks at Gormley "Ring!"

Suddenly he sees Gormley reach to pull his phone out of his pocket and answer it.

"Yes!" Danny triumphantly breathes out then the next second he sees Gormley hang up his phone, say something to Jamie and then open the office door and leave.

The moment he is gone, Danny rushes to Jamie's office to see him already grabbing his keys and phone again.

"Take mine." Danny instructs instead as he holds out the keys to the squad car "And for the love of god use the lights and sirens! Now go! I'll text Eddie and let her know you're on your way."

….

Frank puts his phone down after ending the call with Danny. He ponders the call then looks at his office door. A moment later he gets up, walks over and opens his door to look at Abby at her desk.

"Abigail…" Frank begins "What did Sid have on his calendar for right now?"

Abby turns to her computer and pulls up Sid's schedule "Um… he is scheduled to be at the 5-4 meeting with…" but her voice trails off for a second before finishing "…Sergeant Reagan."

"Hmmmm…" Frank ponders "Preplanned or last minute?" He curiously inquires.

Abby looks back at the computer and checks the schedule revision log "Um looks like a last minute addition. The meeting was entered into the system 30 minutes ago."

Frank nods "Thank you. Please let me know when Sid gets here."

"Copy that Sir." Abby accepts as Frank disappears back inside his office wondering

What was so important that Sid was interfering with by scheduling a last minute meeting with Jamie that would cause Danny of all people to actually call me to have it cancelled?

…..

"Edit Reagan?" A nurse calls.

Eddie nervously glances at the door again "Um here…" She replies as she slowly gets up and walks over.

The nurse smiles at her "Come with me please."

"Um…" Eddie awkwardly hesitates "Is… is there any way we could maybe wait another minute or two? See my husband…"

Suddenly the office door flies open and Jamie comes rushing in "I'm here!"

Eddie lets out a breath of air in relief.

"I'm here." Jamie repeats as he quickly moves to Eddie's side "Did I make it? Please tell me I made it."

Eddie smiles at her husband "You made it." She reassures him "But barely!" she then tosses at him unimpressed as both she and Jamie move to follow the nurse "Were you trying to give me a heart attack?"

"You?" Jamie counters "What about me? I thought I was going to have a stroke!" He exclaims as they walk down a hall.

"Danny did say it looked like you were about to have a coronary." Eddie admits as the nurse stops at a door and gestures for them to go inside "What did Gormley want?"

Jamie huffs out a breath of air and the couple disappear into the room "Ugh ranting raving about the broken door and filing cabinet." Jamie explains before the nurse pulls the door shut behind them.

….

"Alright I'm here." Sid states as he walks into Frank's office "Where's the fire?"

Frank smiles at his Lieutenant "Have a seat Sid. Let's talk."

….

It was the most incredible sound as a faint whooshing fills the air.

"Is that…?" Eddie questions in awe as she lays on the exam table with Jamie sitting right beside her both fixated on the screen before them.

"The heartbeat, yes." The technician confirms before pointing at the screen "And that right there is your baby."

"Oh wow." Jamie breathes out in awe as he tightens his grip on his wife's hand and the emotion of the moment brings both him and Eddie to tears.

….

"Look its nothing I can't handle." Sid insists as Frank reads the report concerning Jamie's office "There really is no need for you as the Commissioner to get involved here." Sid states in confusion "I mean I know they are your kids but as The Commissioner you have way more important things too…"

Frank lifts his head and smiles at Sid "Tell Baker to get my detail ready."

Sid looks at Frank in even more confusion.

….

"I still don't see it." Eddie admits as she squints at the ultrasound photo in her hand as she and Jamie walk back into the bullpen.

"Hey!" Danny greets when he hears her "How'd it go? Did you make it?"

Jamie smiles from ear to ear and nods "I made it!"

"Nice." Danny commends as Eddie holds the photo out to him "I don't see it." She repeats "I know it exists because the doctor confirmed it and we heard the heartbeat – which was absolutely incredible and quite frankly life changing but in that photo, I just don't see it."

"It's still really small Eddie." Jamie points out.

"I know that." Eddie counters "But I don't see that. It's annoying. He sees it…" She tells Danny as she points at Jamie "…but I don't see it. Can you see it?"

Danny squints at the photo "Yeah this little thing right here right?" He questions as he shows his brother.

Jamie leans over to his brother "Yup that's it."

Eddie throws her hands in the air "My kid. I'm the one throwing up six ways to Sunday and I can't see it. Awesome. Only not."

Jamie and Danny exchange apprehensive looks.

"So…" Danny inquires "How far along are you?"

"7 weeks." Eddie absently replies as she snatches her photo back and moves to sink down and slouch back in her chair at her desk studying it.

Jamie walks over behind Eddie's chair, looks at the photo in her hands then reaches over, takes it, turns it 180 degrees and gives it back to her.

"Seriously?" Eddie states in frustration as she glances at her husband "So I've been looking at it wrong this entire time?"

"Sorry." Jamie apologizes as he moves to lean himself against Eddie's desk facing her "But I only know that because I've had experience looking at Nicky, Jack and Sean's multiple ultrasound pics. You'll get the hang of it too."

Eddie again studies the picture "Still don't see it." She states in frustration as she just starts slowly turning the picture a full 360 degrees "No matter what angle I look at it from. WHY CAN I NOT SEE IT?!" She whines.

Jamie offers his wife a small sympathetic smile but he can't help but find her current pouting face absolutely adorable.

"TENHUT!" An authoritative voice suddenly calls.

Startled, Eddie bolts to her feet at hearing the command as do a super surprised Danny and Jamie and every other officer in the bullpen however Jamie and Eddie both suddenly realize she is still holding her ultra sound photo so on instinct, Jamie lifts a file folder on her desk and Eddie tosses it underneath before Jamie snaps to attention and she whips around to do the same. Unfortunately the speed at which Eddie bolts to her feet and turns to face her father in law and boss leaves Eddie starting to feel a little lightheaded and she desperately tries to remain upright and at attention.

From the corner of his eye, Jamie who is standing beside his wife sees her waiver a bit and he is just about to break form to reach out and steady her when two simple words stop him.

"At ease." Frank commands as he eyes his sons and daughter in law.

"Eddie." Jamie tries to covertly whisper in concern as Eddie immediately drops her arm and grips the edge of the desk behind her for support as she sinks a bit to sit on the edge "I'm fine." She mutters under her breath in return as she works to get her bearings.

Crap. Danny thinks as he notices his father intently watching his sister in law knowing he must have seen Eddie waiver.

"Sergeant Reagan." Frank addresses "Everything okay over there?"

"Yes Sir." Jamie immediately replies. "All good."

"Commissioner Sir." Lieutenant Gee greets as he comes out of his office "To what do we owe the pleasure?"

Frank turns his attention away from his children and plaster a smile on his face as he looks at the Lieutenant. "Do I need a reason?" He deflects.

Eddie and Jamie both get slightly puzzled looks on their faces for Frank never did anything without having a clear purpose while Danny just rolls his eyes in realization.

Frank is there trying to figure out why Danny called him…

"You know you try and do something nice…" Danny mutters to himself.

"What?" Jamie lowly questions to his brother next to him.

Danny flashes his brother a quick smile "Nothing." He promises.

Jamie looks at his brother another moment then turns his attention back to their father.

For a moment Danny weighs his options then decides there is only one way out of this so while everyone's attention is focused somewhere else, Danny quietly slips out of the room and into one of the interrogation rooms. He pulls out his phone and dials a number.

"Hello?" Henry's voice greets.

"Hi Gramps." Danny warmly and very sweetly returns.

Henry narrows his eyes suspiciously at hearing the tone of his grandson's voice "Alright, what do you want?"

….

"Sergeant." Frank greets as he walks up to his son "Where did your brother go?"

Jamie opens his mouth to reply 'right here' as he turns his head to where he last saw Danny but is surprised to see he is no longer there "Um…" He hesitates instead…

…..

"Okay I am never doing this again." Danny mutters as he hangs up his phone "This is getting way to complicated to contain…"

…..

Back in the bullpen Frank's cell phone starts to ring "Hello?" he answers.

"Francis!" Henry demands "Where are you?"

"Um working Pop." Frank replies as Jamie and Eddie immediately look over "What's up?"

"So you forgot about our lunch plans then." Henry states unimpressed.

"We didn't have lunch plans." Frank tells his father.

"Yes we did." Henry insists "I even had Baker put it on your schedule!"

"I'm sorry Pop." Frank cautiously states "I was unaware."

"You forgot, that's fine." Henry dismissively and passively states "No need to say you were unaware. You're busy. That's fine. We can make it another day. I have all the time in the world left."

Frank sighs knowing his father is trying to guilt him into lunch but knowing he really has no official business for being at the 5-4 he gives in "No, no Pop don't be silly. I'm on my way." He states before simply turning to walk away.

Watching The Commissioner leave, Eddie leans over to her husband "What was that about?"

Jamie shrugs as Danny suddenly reappears at his brother's side "Absolutely no idea."

Jamie notices him "Hey your back. Where did you go?"

"Washroom." Danny deflects.

Jamie gives his brother a look.

"What?" Danny defends "He said at ease."

"At ease." Jamie counters "Not feel free to walk out of the room!"

Danny shrugs "He didn't seem to mind."

"He asked where you went." Jamie deadpans "And as your Sergeant, I couldn't answer that!"

Danny just looks at his brother unbelievable he thinks here he is trying to do all this FOR his brother and now he's standing there giving him grief.

"My apologies." Danny sweetly relents "You are right. I never should have done that. Completely my bad. Sergeant, I am sorry."

Jamie looks completely shocked at his brother's words "Did…did you just apologize to me AND actually call me Sergeant in the same sentence?"

"I did and you are." Danny dismisses "Now, anything else or can we all get back to work?"

Jamie turns to look at his wife in awe "Did you hear that?" he tries to confirm "Or was I dreaming?"

"Oh no I heard it." Eddie agrees "That happened."

"I think we have to go back to the doctor." Jamie states "I think I might actually be having a heart attack now from shock." He jokes.

Danny shakes his head "Yup never doing that again." He mumbles to himself under his breath as he moves to sit at his desk and pick up a cold case file.
