A/N: At last, the long awaited reveal is here and heads up, this is going to be one loooooong Sunday that spans a few chapters because I just couldn't cram everything into one chapter! I'm sure you won't mind that though... ;)
Chapter 5: The Baby Reveal
With little name cards in her hands, Eddie stands near the head of the dining room table in her father in law's house with her face all scrunched up trying to figure out the seating arrangements.
"Please don't stress about this." Jamie softly pleads as he walks up behind her and leans down to whisper in her ear "It's not good in your condition." He half jokingly half seriously adds.
Eddie rolls her eyes "Please tell me its not going to be 7 more months of that?"
"Would that really be so bad?" Jamie whispers as he loops his arms around his wife and lets his head rest lightly on her shoulder while his hand moves protectively onto her stomach.
For a split second, Eddie smiles and relishes the moment of the three of them but the next second she scoots away from her husband "Stop that." She chides "You keep that up and someone will figure it out before we're ready to tell them."
"No one is even here yet." Jamie points out.
"Except your father and grandfather!" Eddie tosses back "You know the premium of the top of the pyramid of Police!"
"Fine." Jamie relents "What are you doing in here anyway?"
"Trying to figure out where to sit my Mother."
"Next to us?" Jamie offers.
"Hah, you'd think but if I put her on my left then she's next to your father – that's just a disaster waiting to happen."
"No… she'd be next to Erin…" Jamie points out as he pictures their side of the table being Erin, Lena, Armin, Eddie and himself.
"I moved Erin." Eddie simply states.
"Why?" Jamie wonders.
"I just did okay!"
"Okay." Jamie immediately relents "So put Armin at the end, then Lena then you." he tries to offer instead.
"Are you crazy?" Eddie throws out "I'm not putting my Father next to your Father!"
Jamie sighs "Do I dare ask why not?"
"Oh my god if you can't figure that out I don't even know what to say anymore!" Eddie exclaims in complete exasperation.
"So put them on the other side of me." Jamie offers.
"Next to Henry?!" Eddie tosses back is disbelief.
"Eddie…" Jamie sighs "…they have to sit somewhere."
"I know that!" Eddie chides "What do you think I'm trying to work out here?!"
"Okay so how about you sit next to my Dad…" Jamie offers "…I sit next to Pop and your parents sit between us?"
"Jamie!" Eddie cries in disbelief "We need to be sitting next to each other when we give them the news!"
Jamie takes a deep breath and tries to remain calm… "Okay so how about I sit next to my Dad, you sit next to me, Lena sits next to you then Armin sits next to Lena and Pop?"
Eddie thoughtfully considers that option "Okay that could work." She accepts.
"Good." Jamie relents in relief as he quickly kisses the side of his wife's head "Now please stop stressing out. Just relax. It will all be fine."
"I never should have let you talk me into this." Eddie mutters before looking towards the china cabinet "Which china are we using? Go ask your Grandfather if it's alright if we use your Grandmother's set."
"Setting the table is Sean's job." Jamie points out.
Needing everything to be perfect, a slight edge creeps into Eddie's voice at Jamie's inability to see that "I'm doing it this week." She tosses back "Now go!"
For a moment, Jamie simply hangs his head then turns and heads for the kitchen "Hi Pop." He awkwardly greets as he walks up to his Grandfather and stuffs his hands in his pockets.
Henry eyes his grandson and chuckles "What's up with you? You're act like your 8 again and you want to steal a few cookies to eat before dinner."
"Eddie wants to know if we can use the good china." Jamie blurts out.
"You mean your Grandmother's set?" Henry slowly clarifies.
Jamie nods.
Henry curiously eyes his grandson again. Given the guest list, he already knows something is up with these two but decides to be patient and not to press the issue - yet "Sure." He allows.
"Great. Thank you." Jamie accepts as he turns on his heels and exits the kitchen heading back to the dining room.
"Pop says its fine." Jamie informs this wife before slowing his pace and looking questioningly at Eddie who is already in the process of setting the table using a different set of dishes.
"I've changed my mind." Eddie tells her husband as she moves around the table setting plates down "Using the good china will only draw suspicion."
"Eddie the only thing that is drawing suspicion here is you." Jamie retorts but the second the words leave his mouth he regrets them for when he looks at his wife he can clearly see tears forming in her eyes.
"Eddie, honey, please don't cry." He pleads as he moves towards her to try to comfort her but Eddie waves him off as she wipes at her eyes.
"Stupid hormones." She grumbles in annoyance which just makes the tears form faster "Ugh!" she exclaims in frustration as she begins to pace fanning her hands at her face "Get it together Janko." She chides herself.
Jamie looks over in surprise at hearing his wife refer to herself as Janko. She hadn't done that in a looong time... He opens his mouth to say something but then thinks better of it and just shuts his mouth instead.
"Ohhh I don't think I can do this Jamie." Eddie breathes out as suddenly her face scrunches up in disgust from all the stress "Oh please no, not now." She pleads with herself "I haven't even eaten anything in hours!" She mumbles as she quickly begins making her way to the bathroom with Jamie following behind.
As they pass through the main living room, Jamie is startled when the front door opens.
"Jamie!" Erin greets as she enters the house.
"Erin!" Jamie awkwardly returns as he stops walking but keeps glancing down the hall towards the bathroom where Eddie went.
"Everything okay?" Erin inquires at noticing his weirdness.
"Yeah, yeah its fine." Jamie dismisses as he hears Eddie throw up.
"SO!" He loudly quips to try to cover the sound up "Anything new in the DA's office?"
"Um just your standard run of the mill stuff." Erin answers as she continues to eye her younger brother "Are you sure you're okay? Where's Eddie?"
"I'm here!" Eddie greets with a plastered on fake smile as she walks up to Jamie's side and loops her arm around his waist in an attempt to hold herself up.
Jamie immediately picks up on her need for his support and his arm wraps around her waist.
"So how's childless life?" Erin jokes.
"Hmmm." Jamie muses as both he and Eddie just smile at Erin.
"I… I ah think it's starting to catch up with me a little actually." Eddie begins "Mia was sick and I caught it from her – don't worry I'm not contagious or anything." Eddie quickly tacks on "But I think I need to go lie down for a bit…" She states before lowering her voice to barely a whisper and leaning slightly towards her husband so only he could hear "…like right now." Eddie mumbles.
"Yup lets get you upstairs." Jamie immediately insists "Excuse us." He offers his sister before helping Eddie up the stairs "Are you okay?" He yet again asks his wife when they are out of Erin's earshot.
"I reeeeally need to lie down." Eddie breathes out "Room...spinning..."
"Okay almost there." Jamie promises as he opens the door to his old room "Just hang on." He adds as he leads her inside to the bed "Easy." He instructs as he helps her lay down.
"Ugh." Eddie groans out as she immediately closes her eyes in slight relief "This is not good Jamie. Everyone is arriving. This…" She adds as she haphazardly gestures at herself "… is going to ruin everything."
"It is not." He promises "You just say up here and concentrate on feeling better, I'll just go down and… and stall."
"How?"
"I don't know but I will come up with something." He adds as the doorbell rings.
"Ugh." Eddie again groans "They're here!" She adds with a defeated whine.
"Just focus on you and that little spitfire." Jamie prompts as he leans forward and places a quick kiss on Eddie's head "I'll take care of the rest, I promise, don't worry." He adds before disappearing out the door.
Eddie nods her head as she tries to take deep calming breaths "Spitfire." She repeats in thought "Nope, that doesn't fit."
…..
"Hey everyone!" Jamie brightly greets as he comes bounding down the stairs to see Erin letting Lena and Armin in.
"There you are Jameson!" Lena greets "Where is Edit?"
"Um upstairs." Jamie replies "She'll be down soon."
"She wasn't feeling well." Erin explains causing Jamie to cringe slightly and a look of alarm to appear on Lena's face
"Is she still sick?" Lena prompts.
Jamie once again plasters a smile on his face "It's nothing really." He dismissively promises his inlaws.
The doorbell rings again.
"I got it!" Jamie immediately volunteers as he lunges for the door grateful for the distraction. He swings it open to see Rosa and Mia on the other side.
"We're here Uncle Jamie!" Mia sings as she moves to give him a quick hug then picks up her Mother's hand and guides her inside right past Jamie into the living room "Ohhh Hi Ms. Erin, Ms. Lena, Mr. Armie!"
"Uncle Jamie?" Erin queries to her younger brother with a raise of her eyebrows.
Jamie shrugs in deflection "We upgraded."
"It's nice to see you upright!" Armin quips to Rosa.
Rosa looks around slightly at a loss.
"Oh right!" Jamie suddenly realizes with a laugh. "They all know you but you were unconscious the entire time!" He adds as he moves to introduce everyone. "Rosa this is Eddie's parents Lena and Armin Janko and this is my sister Erin Reagan."
"Oh hi." Rosa warmly greets "Just wanted to say thank you to everyone for everything you did."
"Where's Aunt Eddie?" Mia suddenly inquires.
"She's upstairs…" Jamie begins.
Mia immediately starts to move in that direction but Jamie side steps to block her path "You know Mia, why don't you take your Mom and give her a tour – of the main floor okay?" He specifies. "And if you ask nicely, I'm sure Mr. Pop will give you a treat before dinner – he's in the kitchen."
"Okay!" Mia eagerly accepts as she moves to pick up her Mother's hand again "Let's go Mommy." She instructs as she begins leading her away "It's a big house." She explains "But its okay because I know my way around so we won't get lost."
Suddenly the door opens again and Danny enters with Maria "Last ones to the party?" He questions as he eyes the room.
"Well now that you're here, the party's over." Erin throws back.
"Nice to see you too sis." Danny counters.
"Still missing Sean." Jamie adds ignoring the sibling's barbs.
"He was pulling up behind us." Danny offers.
Erin turns her attention to Maria "Where's Elena?"
"My Mom's got her." Maria explains.
Erin pouts "Oh so no baby today."
Jamie tries to hold back the smile that wants to appear on his face as the door opens and Sean enters.
"Well I see everyone is here." Frank states as he enters the room.
"FRANCIS!" Lena brightly greets as she moves to give him a big, warm hug.
"Lena." Frank cordially returns with a smile.
Jamie can't help but notice his father in law look not to happy at the interaction… "Dad!" Jamie quickly steps in "As strange as it is, you and Armin have never actually met so Dad, this is Armin…" He introduces "Armin, this is my Dad."
"Frank." Frank offers as he smiles and holds his hand out "Welcome."
The men shake.
"Thank you for inviting us." Armin offers in return.
"Can't take credit for that." Frank admits "Today is all Jamie and Eddie's doing."
"Yes, where is Edit?" Lena suddenly wonders again.
"She'll be down in a minute." Jamie promises.
"Yes you keep saying that." Lena points out "But it's rude for the hostess to not be greeting her guests."
"She wasn't feeling well." Armin reminds his wife.
"She's fine." Jamie again reiterates.
"Well then she needs to be here." Lena decides as she starts for the stairs "I'll get her. Which room is she in?"
"No." Jamie rejects as he immediately moves to block the stairs again while he looks over at Danny and his eyes plead with him for help.
Suddenly understanding WHY Eddie is upstairs and not downstairs, Danny leaps in to assist. "Armin, Lena, let me take you on a tour."
Having noticed the exchange between her brothers, Erin eyes them curiously.
Jamie again plasters a smile on his face.
Danny begins to lead the Jankos towards the dining room but abruptly stops when Eddie suddenly steps into the doorway blocking their paths "Hi Everyone!" She brightly greets with a big smile. "Sorry it took me so long. Was just finishing up setting the table."
"You did?" Sean questions in surprise "Sweet!" He adds before plopping himself down on the couch.
Jamie silently stares at his wife with piercing concerned eyes You okay?
Eddie nods ever so slightly yes.
"I thought you said she was upstairs?" Lena inquires to her son in law confused.
"I came down the back stairs." Eddie quickly explains.
"DINNER'S READY!" Henry's voice booms from the kitchen.
Sean looks at his watch noting its still a bit early "Oh good thing she set the table then..." he mutters to himself.
"Come on everyone!" Eddie prompts as she steps aside to let everyone in and as they do the regular attendees all slow their pace at the sight of the table.
"Wow haven't used these dishes in a while." Erin notes in surprise.
"We have assigned seating?" Danny laughs at seeing name place cards on every plate.
Jamie moves to his wife's side and leans in to whisper "How did you do all this?"
Eddie leans towards her husband "I had an epiphany upstairs. Just go with it. She quietly instructs "Napkins are under the plates." She adds before stepping forward to help guide people to their seats.
"Well I didn't move." Erin laughs as she heads to her usual spot to sit at Frank's right.
"Me neither." Sean states as he moves to settle into his seat to Henry's right.
At that moment Rosa and Mia walk from the kitchen into the dining room with Henry right behind them carrying the roast and Mia happily munching away on a fresh baked chocolate chip cookie.
"Aunt Eddie!" Mia mumblingly greets as she chews "I got a cookie!"
Eddie frowns "Don't talk with food in your mouth."
"Thank you." Rosa accepts as she looks down at daughter in slight annoyance at her bad manners.
"Sorry." Mia mumbles as Eddie guides them to their seats to sit Rosa in Jamie's usual spot and Mia in her usual spot to Henry's left "But it's really good."
"Thank you!" Henry laughs as he sets the roast down and moves to his chair "Why are we using these old plates?" He asks of his youngest grandson confused as he settles into his seat "I thought we were using your Grandmother's china today?"
"We were Pop..." Jamie slowly replies as he moves to sit to the left of his father across from Erin and turns to looks at his wife as she takes the seat next to him "but…"
"But then I realized…" Eddie quickly takes over as Maria sits next to her and Danny slides into his seat next to both her and Sean "That they clashed with the napkins."
"Napkins?" Henry repeats.
"What napkins?" Lena chimes in as she sits to Mia's left and Armin sits down next to her and to Erin's right "I don't see any napkins."
"They're under your plates." Jamie explains as both he and Eddie wait for people to pull them out but instead almost everyone at the table seems to just accept that answer and move on as they all settle in and start multiple little conversations amongst themselves except for Danny. He is the only one that removes the napkin so he can unfold it and place it on his lap per usual. Jamie and Eddie watch as he takes it out, pauses a moment as he reads 'Congratulations it's a…' with an arrow indicating he should flip the napkin. Sitting next to Danny, Maria notices his pause. She looks over and sees and reads the napkin right before he flips it over where they both see '…a baby!' written on it.
Danny immediately turns his head and looks to his right to see Jamie and Eddie smirking at him. He gives them a smirk right back understanding that this is how they are telling the family.
Maria sees Danny's look then follows his line of sight to see Jamie and Eddie smirking back and nonchalantly shaking their heads telling Danny not to say anything.
Maria puts two and two together and drops her mouth open slightly as she stares wide eyed at Eddie.
Eddie looks over to Maria.
Maria raises her eyebrows.
Eddie smiles and nods.
Maria smiles wide in return but doesn't say anything knowing that at this table, it's not her place.
At that moment, Mia who just finished her cookie reaches under her plate to grab her napkin to wipe her fingers and face. She notices writing on the napkin but it's a pretty big word so she taps her Mother's arm to get her attention.
Rosa looks over at her.
Mia gestures to the napkin.
Rosa reads it then turns it around as instructed. A moment later her brow crinkles slightly. She looks up and scans the faces of the people at the table. Her eyes land on Jamie and Eddie to see them smiling widely at her. Rosa's eyes go wide in recognition and an 'O' forms on her mouth. She quickly leans down to her daughter and whispers in her ear.
Mia's eyes grow wide in understanding as she listens before whipping her head in Jamie and Eddie's direction.
Jamie and Eddie smile warmly at her and Jamie beings a finger to his lips in a 'shhhhh' motion.
Mia looks like she's about to burst apart at the seams with excitement but she doesn't say anything.
Sitting across from Rosa, Sean notices how excited Mia is trying not to be over a napkin. Curious himself now, Sean reaches for his. His brow crinkles in complete confusion as he reads the front and back of the napkin - twice. "Hey." He suddenly inquires to the entire table "Why do the napkins say Congratulations it's a baby?"
A dead silence fills the air at Sean's words as all conversation stops and everyone at the table all begin to look at one another and slowly, one by one, everyone takes the hint.
"Oh my God…" Erin breathes out as she looks at Jamie. Jamie nods at her in confirmation and tears of happiness spring to her eyes.
"Edit?" Lena questions in shock.
Eddie smiles and nods her head up and down yes.
"Oh wow…" Armin breathes out in awe "We're going to be Grandparents!"
Finally, Frank and Henry are the last two to chime in.
Everyone at the table turns their attention to watch Jamie look back and forth between the two greatest heroes and role models in his life.
"Well?" Jamie finally inquires.
A huge grin breaks out on Henry's face "This is fantastic! Another bundle of joy!"
Frank looks at his youngest son and daughter in law with nothing but pride and love in his eyes. The Commissioner in him knew that this would again, change things for them on the job but he had learnt his lesson the last time Jamie and Eddie sprung news like this on the family – that was a conversation for another time so focusing solely on his father role, Frank smiles warmly at them "Congratulations you two."
"Thank you Dad." Jamie accepts.
Unable to contain herself anymore, Mia excitedly bursts out "I'M GOING TO BE AN AUNT!"
Everyone at the table laughs thankful for the break in the heavy emotion of the moment.
"Um yeah..." Jamie relents with a laugh "...something like that."
"Shall we say Grace?" Henry prompts "I believe our new parents to be should do the honors."
Nodding in agreement, Jamie offers his hand out to his wife.
Eddie places her hand in his and they begin "Bless us of lord in these thine gifts.." they recite in unison before those at the table who know it all chime in and once they finish, everyone starts reaching for dishes and chit chatting away.
Sean: "So I FINALLY won't be the youngest anymore."
Erin (to Eddie): "Are you throwing up yet?"
Eddie scoffs "Everyday!"
A look of concern appears on Frank's face "Can you eat?"
Eddie: "Pretty sure I can still have mashed potatoes."
"So that's why you were upstairs early." Lena realizes.
"Right." Erin notes in understanding "Have you tried peppermint tea?" She offers "That worked for me."
"I stand by what I said earlier." Danny chimes in "Crackers and gingerale."
"When Betty was carrying Francis..." Henry offers "…Chamomile tea did the trick."
"I upped my magnesium intake." Rosa helpfully adds "That helped with Mia."
"No, no, no." Lena interjects "When I was pregnant with Edit I drank ginger tea. That's what I made you the other day - you should drink ginger tea." She insists.
Frank silently watches as everyone rambles on and on giving unsolicited advice to the soon to be new parents and he notices Eddie's eyes begin to widen overwhelmed as she tries to keep up and take everything in but he smiles when he sees Jamie, who also notices her frazzled look, simply reach over, pick up her hand and give it a small reassuring squeeze.
Looking over at her husband, Eddie smiles thankfully at him as she squeezes his hand back before they both turn their attention back to the table to continue to listen to non stop advice. As they do, they dish out their plates to eat.
But Eddie takes one bite of the mashed potatoes and her face scrunches up "Maybe not." She rushes out before quickly pushing her chair back and running from the table.
Again, all conversation and movement stops.
"Henry…" Lena begins breaking the silence a moment later "…do you have fresh ginger?"
"I do." Henry replies.
"Show me." Lena instructs as she and then Henry start to get up from the table "Jameson come." She adds "I need to show you how to make this."
"Coming." Jamie dutifully replies as he gets up as well.
As Henry, Lena and Jamie all walk to the kitchen, Mia slowly slides out of her seat. She walks around the table up to Eddie's seat. "Excuse me." She politely states to Frank and Maria as she slightly pushes apart and squeezes herself between both Jamie and Eddie's empty chairs. She reaches under Eddie's plate for her napkin and then grabs her glass of water. Once she has both, she simply turns and starts heading to the bathroom "I'm coming Aunt Eddie!" She loudly calls.
"Okay move all the food to the other end of the table." Erin quickly instructs "Especially the mashed potatoes and anything else with an aroma! And give me her glass of wine." She adds and with that, the rest of the dinner guests work in unison to try to make things easier on the new expectant mom before Danny jokes
"So I guess we all get to eat crackers and plain lettuce next week?"
"Oh my god Danny!" Erin throws back "That is so insensitive!"
"What?" Danny defends "It was a joke!"
"Even I know that was a bad joke Dad." Sean points out.
Frank just shakes his head as his family just keeps on keeping on.
