Chapter 6: Queen Bee

"Here." Jamie states as he stands in the doorway of the bathroom and offers a mug out to his wife.

"What's this?" Eddie mumbles from her seated position on the floor as she takes it.

"Ginger tea." Jamie explains "Your Mom made it. And if this doesn't work I'm pretty sure there is a line up of peppermint tea, chamomile tea, gingerale and god only knows what else for you to try instead."

Eddie can't help but let out a huff of a laugh "Seriously?" She inquires before taking a sip.

Jamie nods "As I was leaving the kitchen with this, others were entering. I hope a fight doesn't break out as they jostle for next position."

Again Eddie huffs out a laugh "Please don't make me laugh." She pleads "It's not helping."

"Sorry." Jamie apologizes "But I gotta warn you. If you thought I was being over protective, I got news for you…"

"Ugh." Eddie groans before taking another sip "Do I even want to know?"

"They've cleared the table of food and are arguing about what dinners should and shouldn't consist of from now on."

Eddie gets a look of displeasure on her face "What? Why are they doing that? They should just go on and eat as normal. I don't want things changing just because I'm pregnant."

"Well, you gotta see it from their point of view…" Jamie continues as Eddie drinks more tea "There hasn't been a baby in this house in over 20 years. They are just a little over excited and overcompensating."

"No." Eddie rejects "I don't need to see it from their point of view." she adds as she feels some fight return to her "And I don't want anything changing so go tell them to stop!"

Jamie shakes his head "Oh they aren't going to listen to me. Pretty sure it needs to come from you. You're their new Queen." He tries to joke with a straight face.

Eddie lifts her head to glare at her husband not at all amused by his bad joke "If I was sitting on the bathroom floor in our apartment I would pick up the pillow and huck it at you, but I'm not, so I can't."

"Noted." Jamie chuckles.

Eddie heavily sighs "Please go tell them I don't want things changing. I want them to eat as normal and that anything less then that WILL be the cause of my stress okay."

"Oh nice." Jamie muses "Guilt them into normalcy."

"Everything okay in there?" Frank's voice sounds from just slightly down the hall far enough away to be able to give Eddie her privacy while still offering help.

Jamie turns to look at his father "We're good Dad, thanks."

"Tell them all to go back to eating!" Eddie calls.

Frank frowns.

Jamie turns to look at his wife "He's frowning."

Getting a look of determination on her face, Eddie pushes herself up a little and leans partially out the door so she can look at her father in law "Does this look like the face of someone who said that as a request?" She challenges as she points her index finger at her face and makes a circle "GO EAT!" She demands.

For a moment, Frank looks at his daughter in law slightly taken aback by the forcefulness of her words and attitude before he simply turns and walks away.

Jamie chuckles "Told you. New queen bee."

"Ugh." Eddie grunts in frustration "Did I seriously just snap at your father like that? What is wrong with me!" She chides herself but then a look of realization appears on her face "It's the hormones." She decides "Go apologize and tell him it was the hormones!" She demands of her husband.

Jamie turns to walk away.

"WAIT!" Eddie suddenly calls in a panic stopping him "Oh my god, don't tell him its hormones!" She rejects changing her mind "Why would I say it's the hormones? What is happening to me?"

"Well…" Jamie begins

"UUUUGGGHHHH." Eddie repeats again before taking another big swig of her tea. "Here take this." Eddie demands of her husband as she holds the mug out to him and begins to stand.

"Feeling better?" Jamie deduces as he takes the mug.

"Yeah I think we have a winner in this tea." Eddie reveals "Go Mom." She adds before making a beeline back to the dining room with Jamie following "Alright everyone listen up!" She demands as she enters.

All eyes turn to her.

"I'll tell you the same thing I told Jamie." Eddie begins "I might be pregnant but I'm not some delicate flower okay."

"No bubble wrap." Jamie quickly and helpfully adds "I tried but she nixed that."

Eddie turns and shoots her husband an unimpressed look "Not helping."

Danny shrugs "I thought it was funny."

Eddie turns to look at her brother in law "No it wasn't."

"Look Eddie." Henry soothingly breaks in "You are going to have to get used to all of us hovering. It's who we are."

But…" Eddie tries to protest.

"No buts." Erin chimes in as she returns to her seat "If I had to put up with it when I was pregnant – you gotta put up with it now. It's how this family works."

"Never going to change." Frank tacks on.

"So that means we can jump on the band wagon too right?" Lena inquires with dancing eyes "Because I have some fabulous ideas for a nursery and…"

"Oh I want to help!" Mia excitedly exclaims.

"We should talk." Maria tells Lena "Elena will have out grown a lot of stuff these two could use."

"Perfect!" Lena quips.

Jamie leans over to his wife "You wanted a village…"

"OKAY STOP!" Eddie demands to the group "You're all so infuriating!" She throws at them but then tears begin to well in her eyes "And I love you all for it!" She emotional cries a second later before once again getting frustrated with herself "Damn hormones!"

Rosa tries to cover her daughter's ears with her hands but it was too late, she already heard it "Oh that's a bad word!" Mia proclaims.

"SORRY!" Eddie calls out now even more frustrated before turning to look at her husband "You!" She accuses "This is your fault! You wanted to get them all together in the same room to tell them and now look at me! I'm a mess!" She cries before turning and hurrying away.

For a moment Jamie just stands there speechless not knowing what to do.

"Oh he's got the look." Danny knowingly points out as he looks at his younger brother then turns to look at his Father, Grandfather and Armin "Now it's official. He's a member of the father to be club."

Henry, Frank and Armin all nod in complete agreement.

"What?" Jamie states in confusion.

"The what the hell just happened, I don't know what is up or down, my head is spinning look of a man trying to keep up with the changing emotions of the mother of his child." Danny explains.

"Did you SERIOUSLY just say that at this table?" Erin tosses at her brother super unimpressed as Lena, Rosa and even Maria all glare at Danny.

So as the table once again erupts into a free for all sparing of words, Jamie simply stands there not sure which hurricane he wants to be in but a moment later he turns and walks away.

From the corner of his eye, Frank watches and smiles thinking good choice.

….

Sitting outside on the front steps of the house, Eddie suddenly feels a blanket being put around her.

"It's not being over protective." Jamie's voice sounds "It's being practical. It's cold out."

"I know." Eddie sighs as she looks appreciatively up at her husband as he sits down next to her "And I'm sorry."

"Can we please stop apologizing to one another every five minutes." Jamie requests "It's getting annoying."

Eddie can't help but laugh as she tugs the blanket around her "Agreed and you know what I realized sitting out here?"

"Hmm?"

"Mia may have prepared us to deal with a child once they reach the age of like 7 or 8 years old but this whole portion of the journey – pregnancy to that age is a separate and completely different ball game." She admits "So I'm flying a little blind here, I'm really not sure what to expect and because of that I'm freaking out a bit."

"You have a point." Jamie agrees "However, no one else I'd rather stumble through it with then you though."

"Me neither." Eddie admits as she leans her head on her husband's shoulder before feeling his body shiver a little "Here." She states as she opens one side of the blanket to him.

Accepting it, Jamie scooting in and huddles close to his wife wrapping the blanket around the both of them "Much better." He agrees.

"It's so peaceful out here right now." Eddie admits.

"It's a hurricane back in there." Jamie retorts.

"Still about us and this baby?" Eddie queries.

"Theme of the week." Jamie reminds her.

"I suddenly miss all the fighting over cases." Eddie realizes.

"Ah the good ol days." Jamie reminisces "It wouldn't surprise me though if they were all huddled around the window right now watching us."

"Do I dare turn around to check?" Eddie wonders.

"Up to you." Jamie retorts "But come on admit it…" He prods as he gently nudges his wife in the arm under the blanket "…you like the hovering at least a little."

"I do not." Eddie rejects.

"Is that right Ms. Words of Affirmation." Jamie challenges.

"That's MRS. Words of Affirmation." Eddie corrects.

Jamie smiles "Even better."

"But that is not the same as a hovering family." Eddie insists.

"But they do it because the care." Jamie points out "And I know you like the caring part."

Eddie sighs "Fine but you are not allowed to tell them that okay?"

"Our secret." Jamie promises.

"Good now let's talk about you calling our baby spitfire earlier." Eddie decides "That's just a no."

"You know I can call them whatever I want as a nickname right?" Jamie retorts "I don't need your permission."

"But spitfire?" Eddie challenges "That's just all kinds of wrong."

"I was just trying it out." Jamie defends.

"And?" Eddie prompts.

"Fine." Jamie relents "It's a no."

"Hah!" Eddie retorts in triumph.

Silence.

"We need a porch like this." Eddie quietly decides a moment later.

"We technically DO have a porch like this." Jamie reminds his wife.

"Yeah but not one we are keeping. I want one we're keeping."

"I could be down with that." Jamie agrees before his stomach starts to rumble.

Eddie pulls away to look at her husband "You didn't eat did you?"

"To be fair neither did you." Jamie reminds her.

Eddie rolls her eyes "Come on…" She begins as she starts to stand "…you need food and let's see what I can keep down."

"You want to go back in there?" Jamie states in mock shock as he also stands up giving the blanket fully over to his wife.

Eddie offers her husband a small smile as she wraps it around her again "If I sit on the couch will they wait on me hand and foot?" She jokes.

Jamie laughs as they step to the door "Do you want them too?"

"God no!"

"Then work it into the conversation that you want them too." Jamie suggests as he places his hand on the door knob.

"Oh reverse psychology." Eddie realizes "Nice."

"It might or might not work though." Jamie admits as he turns the knob.

"With this bunch…" Eddie relents "…good point."

"Ready?" Jamie checks.

"Ready." Eddie replies.

Nodding, Jamie opens the door and he and Eddie are immediately hit with Erin's voice exclaiming

"WAIT. YOU ALREADY KNEW? YOU KNEW THEY WERE PREGNANT BEFORE I DID?"

Jamie and Eddie immediately freeze and cringe slightly knowing the battle that is about to ensue over that one "Here we go." Jamie mutters "Are you really sure you want to walk back into that?" He questions.

"Yes." Eddie confirms as she walks inside, removes the blanket from around her and lays it on a chair near the door "We need to eat. Besides I'm hormonal now so I can go all whoopass if needed and no one will even bat an eye."

"Oh excellent way to look at it." Jamie admits impressed as he shuts the door behind him "Whoopass Eddie. I like that. I look forward to seeing that."

Eddie again rolls her eyes "Come on." But then she has a thought "Wait I know how to sideline the conservation…" she realizes as she walks to her purse on a side table, reaches in and pulls out their sonogram photo.

"Oh nice." Jamie immediately agrees as they both walk back into the dining room.

"So who wants to see the first ultrasound photo?" Eddie interrupts.

The entire table turns to look at them before a chorus of "Me's!" is heard.

"What's an ultrasound?" Mia questions.

"First photo of the new baby." Rosa explains to her daughter.

"I'm the patriarch." Henry bolsters "Me first!"

Eddie hands him the photo then moves to take her seat with Jamie "Just pass it around."

"When did you have your appointment?" Erin asks.

"Early this week." Eddie replies as Henry passes the photo to Sean and points out the baby to him in the picture "Jamie almost didn't make it because Lieutenant Gormley suddenly appeared and cornered him in his office." She laughs.

Frank immediately lifts his head and looks over at Danny.

Danny gives his father a silent pointed look as if to say now you know why I called.

Frank gives a slight smile and nod of his head in understanding and approval as Sean passes the photo to Danny who just immediately passes it to Maria without looking at it.

"You're not going to look at it?" Erin curiously questions of her older brother at seeing his actions.

"Seen it." Danny deflects.

Erin's mouth drops open "You've seen it?!" She exclaims in disbelief.

Danny rolls his eyes "I work with them everyday, all day!" He defends "There isn't a lot these two do that I don't know about!"

"Damn." Eddie mutters to her husband as she takes the photo from Maria "Didn't account for that detail." She admits as she passes the photo to Jamie.

"Yeah we should have seen that coming." Jamie admits as he passes the photo to his father.

"How far along?" Lena inquires.

"Just over 7 weeks now." Eddie replies "We know it's a little early to be telling everyone but Jamie and I agreed desk duty is best at this point and the paperwork for that is about to land on…"

"…My desk." Frank finishes.

"Yeah." Jamie admits "And we didn't want you finding out that way or finding out before everyone else so…"

"But HE knew!" Erin reminds everyone as she points at Danny.

Danny gives a slight hand throw in the air "I caught her throwing up one day and figured it out! Let it go Erin!" he admonishes but underneath his annoyed posturing he is thoroughly enjoying his sister's frustration.

Frank hands the photo to Erin hoping it will distract her and it does as she takes it and silently smiles as she looks at it.

"I get first dibs on babysitting!" Erin suddenly declares as she passes the photo to Armin.

"Oh I should have called that." Danny realizes in regret "I get to hold it first!" He calls.

"Could I actually have the baby first please?" Eddie interrupts as Jamie leans over to look at his brother in annoyance.

"And no I…" Jamie emphasizes in rejection "…get to hold MY child first – after her…" He announces as he points at his wife "Geez."

"Well yes, yes of course." Danny agrees "But AFTER that – I'm first."

"Ahead of the Grandparents?" Lena challenges as she takes the photo out of Armin's hand "Oh I don't think so!"

"Or great grandparent." Henry chimes in.

"Okay first Uncle or Aunt." Danny corrects.

"I'm second then!" Mia suddenly pipes up.

With a look of utter super unimpresssed disbelief on her face, Erin leans forward and looks at the young girl at the other end of the table from her.

"Erin…" Jamie immediately warns his sister as Lena seeing Erin's look, leans towards the table and turns to Mia to give her and Rosa the photo blocking Mia's view of Erin.

"That's a baby?" Mia questions in confusion oblivious to Erin's displeasure at the same time Erin turns to look at her younger brother.

Rosa sighs "I'll explain it later." She promises her daughter as Jamie gives Erin an unmistakable look that says don't ruin this for her.

"Fine." Erin relents in a huff as she sits back in her chair "Third." She unhappily mutters in defeat.

Danny triumphantly smiles at his sister.

"Guess that means I'm last." Sean sighs "Again!"

Eddie simply shakes her head at the antics around her.

"Well whomever holds this baby first, fifth or last." Frank interrupts "There is one thing that is abundantly clear – he or she will have no shortage of people surrounding them with love." He adds before raising his glass "To the newest Reagan."

"Janko-Reagan." Armin corrects as everyone at the table also raises a glass except Danny who turns his head to look at his sister in law and brother.

"Are you going with Janko-Reagan?" He questions "I thought..."

Jamie rolls his eyes "Just pick up your glass." He instructs.

"Fine." Danny relents as he complies.

"To the newest Reagan!" Everyone at the table toasts.

"So…" Mia begins after everyone takes a drink "How exactly are babies made anyway?"

Rosa nearly spits out her drink.

Eddie freezes and her eyes go wide in a panic and Jamie begins to cough as the liquid goes down the wrong way.

Henry, Frank, Lena, Armin, Erin and Danny all give a knowing smile as they lift their glasses again "To Parenthood!" They toast.

Mia continuously looks around the table waiting for an answer "Anybody?"

"You know Mia…" Sean begins "I asked that same question when I was about your age and you know what I was told? The stork brings them."

"YES!" Rosa immediately decides as she points at Sean "The Stork!" She agrees.

A silence befalls the table as everyone waits to see if Mia buys that answer…

"A stork?" Mia questions unsure "Really?"

Rosa heavily sighs "I'll explain it in detail later." She yet again reluctantly mutters to her daughter before looking over at Jamie and Eddie "Thank you for speeding up a conversation I thought I still had years to prepare for." She tosses at them.

"Sorry." Eddie sheepishly apologizes as she and Jamie both slightly blush causing everyone except Mia at the table to smile or chuckle in understanding.

Mia however instead just looks around now even more confused. "What's going on?" She questions "Why are you blushing?" She asks her Aunt and Uncle.

"Mia…" Henry interrupts drawing the young girl's attention to him "How about you come help me get the cookies? My helper always gets an extra one." he secretly reveals.

"SURE!" Mia excitedly quips forgetting all about the previous conversation.

A look of relief appears on Rosa face as she turns to look at Henry Thank you. she appreciatively mouths.

Henry offers Rosa a warm smile and quick nod of his head in understanding as he and Mia get up and exit the dining room.

"You know Rosa…" Erin begins "If you need any help explaining anything to Mia, I'm sure her Aunt and Uncle over here would be more then willing to help. Right guys?" she challenges with a smirk as she looks directly at Jamie and Eddie.

With deepening blushes, Jamie and Eddie both pick up their glasses and bring their waters to their lips to take big long, time wasting drinks to put off answering that as long as possible…

"Man." Danny laughs in the meantime as he watches them "Now this is what I call a great baby reveal."

On pure instinct and without thinking, Maria's hand flies out and swats Danny in the chest.

"Hey!" he protests with a slight jump in surprise causing both Jamie and Eddie to immediately lower their glasses and again try not to spit out or choke on their waters.

"Oh my god." Eddie squeaks out at the familiar move as she and Jamie just start to knowingly laugh.

"What?" Maria questions in confusion.

"Never mind." Jamie manages to dismiss with a slight wave of his hand between laughs.

"No what?" Danny presses not understanding either.

"COOKIES!" Mia announces as she comes into the dining room proudly carrying a plate.

"Oh I'll take one!" Sean immediately pipes up so Mia walks over to him.

"Are they still warm?" Danny hopefully questions as Sean takes a cookie.

"Yup!" Mia sings as she walks over to Danny next.

"Nice." Danny accepts as he picks up a cookie "Thank you Mia." he states as the young girl just keeps moving around the table offering cookies and the topic of conversation once again shifts and heads into a completely different direction…
