Chapter 18: Larger Conversations
Word got around the squad fast how Eddie cracked a cold case on her first day of desk duty and her popularity soared. Suddenly Jamie was watching Detective after Detective appear at his wife's desk bringing her gifts of tea or snacks trying to get her to look at their cases next.
He just shook his head at it all.
"Are you trying to make me jealous?" Jamie asks as he walks out of his office and up to his wife pulling on his NYPD jacket.
"What?" Eddie questions.
"You have every Detective in this squad swooning over you, trying to get you to look at their cases next."
"Oh they are not." Eddie dismisses.
Jamie leans over and gestures to all her 'gifts' laid out on her desk "So these are?" He prompts.
Eddie shrugs "They just bring me stuff because they know I can't leave."
Jamie laughs "Eddie, it isn't prison…" he states as he reaches over and picks up one of the take out cups on her desk "You can walk out the door and go get a… a herbal motherkind tea." he reads with a slight laugh "What is even in this?"
"It's really good." Eddie happily replies "Rondoletti got it for me!"
Jamie looks over at the file Eddie is working on "Hmm and coincidentally it's his case you seem to be working on now. Imagine that."
Eddie offers a sheepish little shrug causing Jamie to just shake his head.
"Where are you going?" Eddie then questions her husband noting he's wearing his NYPD jacket.
"Gotta go meet Danny and Baez – got a tip on where the perp might be hiding."
"Okay." Eddie accepts "Be safe."
Jamie silently nods before disappearing down the hall.
Eddie watches him leave then turns back forward and jolts slightly in surprise to see another Detective – Detective Sheehan standing next to her desk smiling brightly at her. He offers her a smoothie cup in his hand "My wife swore by these when she was pregnant."
Eddie smiles and reaches to take it "Thank you!" She quips before taking a sip through the straw. "Wait is that ginger I taste?"
The guy nods.
"Ah man!" Eddie laughs "Where were you three weeks ago?"
Detective Sheehan raises an eyebrow.
"Ginger tea seems to do the trick for my morning sickness…" Eddie quickly explains "I think I'm over that now though – fingers crossed!" She tacks on "This would have been another option!"
The detective nods in complete understanding.
….
Jamie walks back into the bullpen and stops short at the sight of yet two other Detectives standing around Eddie's desk – Eddie nowhere in sight – arguing.
"I gave her my file first!" One Detective snaps "Stop trying to buy her off and jump the line!"
"Hey just because I'm being thoughtful!" a second Detective defends as he stands there holding a take out container in his hands.
"HEY!" Jamie barks as he walks over "What's going on?"
"Oh um, nothing Sarge." Detective number one tries to nonchalantly dismiss.
"Didn't look like nothing." Jamie presses "Where is Detective E. Reagan anyway? Were you two arguing in front of her?" He demands now really worried they upset her.
"Um no." the second Detective replies "Haven't seen her in about 10 minutes."
Jamie eyes the Detectives a moment "Get back to work." he then orders before pulling out his phone to begin composing a text message and as he does the Detective holding the take out container nonchalantly slides it onto Eddie's desk.
"Just let her know I got this for her okay?" He asks of Jamie "It's that double decadent chocolate cake from that dessert place around the corner."
Jamie looks up from his phone at the Detective in amazed disbelief "Sure." he replies with a bit of forced pleasantness in his voice as he hits send on his message.
I'm back. Where r u?
The Detective smiles brightly "Thanks!" he quips before walking away.
Eddie replies a moment later with laying down in car
Jamie's eyes go wide when he reads that so he spins on his heels and hurries for the parking garage.
"Eddie!" he calls as he approaches the Chevelle and whips the passenger's side door open.
"I'm just a little light headed." Eddie explains from the backseat as she watches her husband rush into the front seat of the car to look at her "There really should be somewhere upstairs someone can lie down for a minute."
Jamie blows out a breath of air in relief.
"Sorry didn't mean to panic you." Eddie offers "How was the raid?"
"A bust." Jamie replies.
"Oh sorry." Eddie offers.
Silence.
"I just caught Pitts and Luma arguing over you at your desk." Jamie offers.
"What?" Eddie queries confused.
"Eddie, its like high school and the jocks are fighting over who gets to take the pretty girl to the prom."
"Oh well that's a no contest decision then, that's you." She lightly quips.
Jamie smirks "I'm serious Eddie. This is starting to become an issue."
"Well you're my Sergeant." Eddie sweetly points out "Do something about it."
"And if I do you aren't going to go all 'Jamie! Why did you do that?'" he challenges mimicking her voice.
"As long as your solution doesn't involve taking me off the cold cases." Eddie replies "No."
"Really?" Jamie presses.
"It is getting a bit hard to manage." Eddie admits "I just get into the groove on a case and someone interrupts breaking my focus and I'm having to get up and pee like every half hour from all the tea and smoothies I'm drinking."
"How much tea?" Jamie presses in concern.
"It's all pregnancy friendly, caffeine free." Eddie promises.
"Okay." Jamie accepts in relief.
"I know because if I was going to do that I'd just drink coffee." Eddie retorts as she slowly sits up.
Jamie holds up two fingers "How many fingers am I holding up?"
Eddie looks at him confused "Two… why?"
"Just making sure you aren't still seeing double."
"Thank you Doctor Reagan." Eddie sarcastically tosses back "Would you like to perform a full exam too?"
A smile starts to creep up onto Jamie's face at the thought.
"Oh just get out of the car so I can get out." Eddie chides "Nobody is examining anything right now."
"Okay later." Jamie decides as he backs out of the car and moves the seat forward.
Eddie huffs out a laugh as she crawls out of the back seat "There should seriously be a couch or something upstairs though, I barely made it here in time."
Jamie eyes his wife in concern suddenly picturing her all lightheaded and dizzy trying to make it all the way from her desk down to the garage.
"I'll… I'll look into it." Jamie seriously decides as he shuts the car door.
Eddie looks up at her husband in surprise "Really?"
"Yeah." Jamie slowly confirms "I've never really thought about it before but the precinct as a work place isn't exactly set up to be accommodating to the needs of it's pregnant employees. I can probably swing a couch…" he decides.
A smile begins to form on Eddie's face "Hmmm… now this is actually a conversation for Sunday Dinner."
Jamie's eyes go a bit wide at his wife's words "Whoa. Okay. Hang on." He protests "I didn't mean…"
"Well I do!" Eddie decides cutting him off "Jamie I'm not the only female cop out there that is pregnant and I certainly won't be the last." She realizes "It's about time this conversation happened and who better to initiate it then me! If fact if I didn't, I would be performing a disservice to all my fellow female cops in the entire NYPD!"
"Eddie." Jamie cautiously warns but Eddie is having none of it.
"I eat dinner with the Commissioner every Sunday." Eddie thinks as she runs with the idea "I'm the only one that CAN champion for this! He'll have no choice BUT to listen to me!"
Jamie opens his mouth to again protest it but then just shuts it and closes his eyes realizing it would be futile. His pregnant wife is now on a mission and there would be no stopping her. His only thought now is wondering if he should give his Dad a heads up or…" he curiously ponders …wait and see what his true reaction is…
Hmmmmmmm…
"Oh." Jamie remembers as he and Eddie start for the door to the stairs "If you're interested, Pitts got you a piece of that double decadent chocolate cake from that place around the corner. It's on your desk."
Eddie's eyes light up "And you're just telling me this now?" She chides as she picks up her pace to get to the door leaving her husband in her dust.
Again, Jamie just shakes his head as he moves to quickly catch up.
….
Walking into the bullpen together, Jamie and Eddie head in the direction of her desk to see what looks like a jewelry box on it.
"Seriously." Jamie mutters as they approach "Now they're giving you jewelry?"
"Oh hey!" A Detective calls "TARU dropped that off for you!"
"Oh!" Eddie giddily replies in understanding as she swipes the box up and snaps it open "Oh Jamie look!" She gushes as she pulls out a necklace locket. "It's perfect! Mia is going to love this!"
Jamie picks up the invoice that was under the box on the desk "Guess I better pay this." he states as he pulls out his phone "Wouldn't want to be accused of stealing office supplies." he jokes.
"Where are the instructions?" Eddie ponders as she looks around "I want to program it into my phone to test it."
"Try under the padding in the box." Jamie absently replies as he pulls up his banking app.
"Ah got it!" Eddie quips as she finds the paper and unfolds it.
Jamie's phone in his office rings so hearing it he silently heads that way while trying to pay the invoice with his phone. Eventually he puts his cell and invoice down on his desk to answer his land line "Reagan."
He listens a few moments "Okay on my way." he states before hanging up and grabbing his phone. He heads back out into the bullpen "I gotta go but we'll deal with everything we talked about later okay?"
Eddie nods once again calling out "BE SAFE!" before turning her attention back to her desk and noticing the take out container "Ooooo my cake!" She giddily quips as she flips the container open and her mouth salivates at the sight of it "Come to Mama!"
…..
Multitasking, Eddie happily takes a bite of her cake with a fork as she sits at her desk trying to program Mia's tracking necklace into her phone app but she looks up when she hears a female voice inquire "Excuse me? I'm looking for Detective Reagan."
Eddie quickly swallows and stands "That's me." She greets.
The woman before her looks over and smiles "Hi, there's this guy outside who wants to see you but he doesn't want to come inside."
Eddie's face scrunches up "Why?"
"I don't know." The woman admits "He just asked me to come inside and get you."
"Do you know his name?" Eddie queries.
"Again no." The woman replies "Look sorry, maybe I shouldn't have even come up here but he looked like he could use some help and insisted you were the only one that could help him."
"Alright." Eddie agrees as she gestures with one hand to lead the way while pocketing Mia's necklace in her pants with her other hand.
….
Eddie and the other woman walk out a side door of the precinct and Eddie looks around. She doesn't see anyone else. All she sees is a dark sedan parked next to the door but there is no one inside "Okay where is this pers…"
But suddenly Eddie feels a sharp pain as something hits her back and everything just goes black…
….
A/N: Uh oh….. :)
