Chapter 48: Moving On Up

Danny and Maria sit at their desks when Eddie and Jamie walk over.

"Just wanted to let you know that your crown is safe." Eddie states to her brother in law.

Danny looks up in confusion "My crown?"

"Yes, for being the best Detective Reagan there ever was." Eddie explains "You get to keep it."

"I do?" Danny questions as he watches Eddie unclip her Detective shield from her waist and carefully place it down on the desk. He then watches as Jamie lifts a black box up towards his wife and ceremoniously lift the lid. Eddie reaches in and gently removes a brand new Sergeant shield from the box. She clips it to her waist then picks up her old Detective shield and places it in the black box. Jamie snaps the lid shut with purpose.

"You do." Eddie repeats "Because now instead… you get to call me Boss!" She proudly quips.

Danny leans back in his chair and smirks as he looks at his younger brother and sister in law "You thoroughly enjoyed that didn't you?"

"Oh yeah." Jamie reveals with a grin.

"Completely." Eddie agrees with a bright smile.

Danny looks across the desk to Maria "Now they really ARE a power couple."

Suddenly the smile drops from Eddie's face and is replaced with a look of confused wonderment as her hand flies to her stomach on instinct.

Danny and Maria immediately stand and turn serious.

"What?" Jamie demands in slight fear as he tosses the box in his hand on the desk and immediately reaches for his wife "What's wrong?"

"Um, I don't think anything is wrong." Eddie slowly realizes as she shifts her torso around a bit then grabs Jamie's hand and places it on her stomach. "The opposite actually."

Suddenly Jamie's mouth forms an O.

"Do you feel that?" Eddie questions in slight awe.

"I…I do." Jamie breathes out in amazement.

"Oh first time the baby moved!" Danny knowingly announces "Enjoy it now because in the last few weeks you're gonna get super annoyed that that kid won't stop moving – kicking this way and that way - especially when you are trying to sleep!"

"Danny!" Maria admonishes.

"What?" Danny defends "I'm just telling it like it is."

Jamie looks at his wife "If you tell him to shut up, he has to listen to you now."

"Oh he can't call me rookie anymore can he?" Eddie realizes.

"Sure I can." Danny challenges "Now you're just a rookie Sergeant instead of a rookie Detective but still a rookie none the less."

The baby moves again.

Eddie slightly flinches "That feels super weird." She admits in awe "It's almost like a little pitter patter or a flutter."

"Do you need to sit down?" Jamie presses in concern.

Eddie slowly turns to look at her husband "No, I am fine." She insists "I was just simply stating a fact that the baby moving around feels weird."

"Oh. Okay." Jamie breathes out in relief.

Danny snickers.

Jamie turns to glare at his brother "What?" he demands.

"You need to chill out. If that freaks you out now you are gonna be a basket case come the 3rd trimester which is just going to set her off."

Eddie stares unimpressed at Danny a moment then turns to look at Maria. "You want to know the best thing about accepting this promotion?"

"What's that?" Maria replies.

"I can now do this." She adds as she turns to walk to her new office. She walks inside, turns around, grabs the door, gives everyone out in the bullpen a 'watch this' look and just shuts the door and flicks the lock closed signalling she doesn't want to be bothered.

Danny looks at his brother and snickers "Hope you got your keys on you." He quips in amusement before sitting back down at his desk. "Ah, life is good."

Jamie stuffs his hands in his pockets and feels for his keys. He closes his eyes and sighs when he doesn't feel them. "You're a pain in the ass." He mutters under his breath to his brother as he turns to walk up to his office. He lifts his hand and knocks. "Eddie my keys are inside." He tells her through the door.

A second later he hears the lock unclick.

Turning the knob, Jamie opens the door and as he enters he sees his wife moving to sit back down at her desk.

"Sorry." She mutters.

"Don't know why you're apologizing." Jamie counters in return as he shuts the door behind him knowing Eddie still needs her space.

"Because I should not have stomped off like that." Eddie admits "That was unprofessional."

"At least you have an excuse, you're pregnant."

Eddie's mouth falls open. "Just because I'm pregnant does not mean…" but Eddie's voice tails off as she makes a funny face and shifts her waist around.

"Still moving?" Jamie inquires.

Eddie nods.

Jamie moves to his wife "Same spot?" he queries as he reaches over and again, Eddie places his hand on her stomach. He leans slightly down "Hey Kiddo. Your Mom and I are super happy that you're letting us know you're okay in there but maybe just give it a rest for a bit huh? Let your Mom slowly get used to you banging away on your surroundings – don't overwhelm her all at once – that's not cool."

Eddie smiles as she listens to her husband 'discipline' their child. "Hey." She suddenly realizes "I think that worked."

Jamie stands straight up "Really?" he states in surprise. "I thought that only worked in the movies."

"The why did you try it?"

Jamie shrugs "Worth a shot?"

"Well nicely done." Eddie compliments. "In fact Mommy thinks Daddy should get a reward for that!" she adds before she leans up and gives Jamie a soft kiss on his cheek. "Thank you." She sincerely offers before heading back to her desk and sitting down.

Jamie smiles happily at his wife but then sees her close her eyes, take a deep breath and fidget again.

"Spoke too soon." Eddie states "Come on Baby." She pleads "Mommy needs to get some work done okay? And if you don't let me do that, I won't have the reports ready for Daddy and he'll get mad!"

Jamie turns to look at his wife "Excuse me? Don't make this my fault!"

Eddie turns to look at her husband "You're supposed to work with me here to achieve the desired goal of getting the munchkin to settle down not contradict me!"

"Oh." Jamie realizes "Sorry."

A worker with a toolbox full of stenciling is standing in front of Jamie and now Eddie's new office just finishing putting his tools away when Jamie and Eddie walk up.

"Well look at that!" Eddie beams in pride at now seeing both their names on the door.

Danny leans over towards the pair as he whizzes past behind them on his way to his desk "Power Couple." he tosses out.

Jamie and Eddie both turn to look at him "Morning Bosses!" Danny brightly greets them with a smile "I am here to serve oh humble masters." he placatingly greets with a dramatic bow.

Jamie rolls his eyes while Eddie giggles "Hmmmm…" She ponders "What can I order you to do first?"

Danny stands back up and looks at his brother "Power. Right to her head." he disapprovingly mocks.

"Morning everyone." Maria greets as she enters the bullpen "And how is our Power Couple this morning?"

Again Jamie rolls his eyes "You too?"

Danny innocently gestures at his own chest in jest "Are we wrong? I think not!"

"Absolutely not!" Maria wholeheartedly agrees.

"Okay now they are just mocking us." Jamie decides.

"NEVER!" Maria counters "We are just your minions, here and ready to serve." She adds as she does her own little exaggerated bow.

"Okay clearly you two planned this." Jamie notes "You can cut it out now."

"And that's an order!" Eddie gleefully tacks on.

Danny and Maria suddenly begin to clap "Bravo!" they sing in unison.

"You're first order!" Maria quips.

"We are so proud of you!" Danny cheekily tacks on.

"You know you would think that with our promotions we would have gained more respect from them but yet somehow I feel like we are getting less." Jamie points out.

"Definitely less." Eddie agrees.

"Okay come on now you know that's not true." Danny counters "Oh course we are proud of you – both of you. We were just trying to have a little fun what with being the lowest ranking members of the division now with just merely first grade Detective rankings."

"Not to mention more years experience under our belts." Maria nonchalantly points out "Then all of your years combined."

"Oh I'm feeling the love now aren't you?" Jamie sarcastically asks his wife.

"Sooo much love." Eddie agrees.

"Good!" Danny quips "Then we have done our jobs!"

"Done your jobs? Really?" Eddie challenges "You haven't even started your day and you're saying you're done? Oh I don't think so. Not on my watch!"

"Oooooh sounds like she's going to be a very strict boss." Danny playfully notes.

"Well you could be the one standing here with the Sergeant shield on if you had taken the exam." Eddie points out "But you didn't so too bad!"

"Hey Jamie." Lieutenant Gee greets as he walks up and knocks his head back towards this office "Can I have a word?"

"Sure." Jamie accepts "Excuse me." He offers before moving to follow his fellow Lieutenant "What's up?" Jamie asks as the two men enter Gee's office and Gee shuts the door.

"Have a seat." Gee offers as he moves to sit behind his desk "Now that you've made Lieutenant – congratulations by the way."

"Thank you." Jamie accepts as he sits across from Gee at his desk.

"I wanted to run something past you."

"Okay."

"I'm thinking of retiring." Gee announces.

"Oh." Jamie states in surprise "Con...gratulations?" he hesitantly offers.

Gee laughs "It is." He confirms "And I want to recommend you to replace me."

Jamie looks at Gee more then a little shocked…
