Sorry for the late update, but I'm moving to my dorm this week, so I've been pretty busy packing. Anyway, I actually enjoyed reading this chapter when I checked it for mistakes, so I hope you do too. I've written about ten chapters ahead, and it's taken a while, so at this point I don't remember everything that I wrote, which is giving me a little more of an objective view on it. As always, enjoy and PLEASE REVIEW!
One week later:
Mallory had passed her tests with flying colors, as had her teammates. Today was the day that they would be able to see each other for the first time since they'd been kidnaped, and they would meet Kobra today and get their cult names. She carefully put on the mask and robe and waited for Cas to come get her. When he did, they went to a room that had a high platform. Zatanna, Wally, and Robin were there, standing with their trainers. Mallory and Cas moved next to them.
"Well, anyone have anything new? I mean, it's been a week, and we still don't know what Kobra's world dominion plan is," Zatanna said.
"At least once we get this thing over with we'll have free rein over the base. I'm sure we won't be here much longer," Robin replied.
"I hope not. This is getting old," Mallory said. She had bruises all over her body from training, and she was getting nervous of the smiles and looks Cas shot her when he didn't think she was looking. There was something going on, and she didn't think she wanted to stick around to find out what.
"Kneel," someone said above them. All of them on the floor knelt and ducked their heads down. Footsteps echoed along the walls as someone walked across the platform.
"Rise," an arrogant voice commanded.
Mallory stood up in sync with her friends and looked up. A man with paper-white skin and a robe with snake eyes and fangs on the hood was standing there, looking down at them with his arms crossed and a smile on his face.
"Our newest recruits. Have they been trained properly?" Kobra asked.
Cas stepped forward. "Yes, exalted one. They are ready for their purpose in your cause."
Mallory ducked her head to hide an eye roll.
"Who is this one?" Kobra asked, and Mallory raised her head back up to see who he was talking about. He was indicating her, and a nervous pulse went through her.
"She is the one I spoke of earlier," Cas told him.
Kobra nodded, his face unreadable. "The others, they will help guard the parameters. I want to see this one closer."
"And their names, great Kobra?" one of the trainers asked.
Kobra went down the line, starting with Robin and ending with Wally. "Drake, Natharia, Fani."
"Aww man," Wally said, and Robin chuckled and said, "you're just not very lucky." His mood changed as he risked a quick look at Mallory as they were herded out the door by their trainers and she tried to lock eyes with him. The masks that they wore had the eyes open, so she had hoped to see her friend's eyes, but he had the hood pulled down too low.
"You just don't trust anyone, do you?" Mallory asked playfully, trying to hide her nerves.
"Habit," he replied. "Hey, be careful, alright?"
They were out of the door already, and Mallory turned her attention to Kobra, who was coming down to her level. "Yeah, I will," she told him.
Kobra stood across from her, staring at her in a way that made her think he could see right through her lies and her cover. Then, he nodded towards Cas and said, "This one tells me that you have spirit. He thinks that you deserve a special purpose. Do you agree with him?"
Mallory looked the man in the eye. "I guess that'll be up to you," she said.
Kobra smiled with satisfaction. "There are not many that would dare to look a god in the eye. You are everything he has said you are, and more. You will be called Havu." He turned to Cas and said, "Bring her to the chambers. She will need to be made ready."
"Ready for what?" Mallory asked, trying to decide if the mission was worth it.
Kobra's smile turned to a glare that quick. "You dare to question me? Perhaps your spirit needs taming. Make her a guard with the other recruits. We will call upon her when the time is right." The man turned and started walking away and Cas led Mallory outside to a wall of the base and put her next to what she thought was Zatanna, though it was hard to tell.
"Z, are you next to me?" she asked.
"Yeah, I'm here. Wally and Rob are in front of us."
"What did Kobra want?" Robin asked.
"He wants me for some sort of special assignment. I didn't like the sound of it. When I asked him what it was, he thought I was being too bold and sent me to guard to put me in my place, I guess."
"Special assignment? Do you think it has to do with his plan?" Zatanna asked.
"I don't know. He said that he would find me when the time was right, whatever that means."
"Yeah, well, good luck with that. The way he's got all his goons dressed, you can't tell anyone apart," Wally said. Mallory fought a smile and trained her eyes on the distance, wondering where the bioship was.
"Don't forget to try to get more details. And since you have the run of the base now, try and find where Kobra has his stuff. You can use those robes to your advantage, I can't see anyone stopping you. I mean, I can't even tell you four apart," Artemis said.
"Yeah, I plan to take full advantage of that fact," Robin said.
Mallory glanced down at him worriedly. "Be careful, Rob. Kobra might be crazy, but he's not stupid, and neither are his lieutenants."
"Don't worry, Mal, he's been doing this for years," Wally said, but Robin chanced a look behind him, locked eyes with her and smiled. Mallory returned it, thinking, 'huh, so blue eyes'.
For a week and a half things went more or less the same. In the middle of the week, the four of them got a rare opportunity to eat lunch together. They found a table at the back of the meal room and tried to talk about normal things while having a serious conversation on the link.
"I've searched almost everywhere on the base, and I still haven't found where Kobra stays, or any plans," Robin said, frustrated.
Mallory caught his eye. "Robin, be careful. I know you're good at what you do, but someone is going to notice that you're never where you're supposed to be."
He smiled. "You worry too much. I was trained by Batman."
She rolled her eyes and turned to Wally. She was concerned about him, too. He was going down, not being able to eat the way he should. She grabbed his empty tray and quickly put her half full one in front of him. She'd eaten enough, and he really needed the extra food. He gave her a grateful look and made quick work of the fruits and vegetables.
"How much longer do we have to be here?" Zatanna asked after saying something about guard duty aloud. She sounded tired, and Mallory understood completely. She was more than a little homesick. She missed her family and Metropolis, and Isaiah and Superman. Heck, she even missed Batman.
"It shouldn't be much longer. I have to find the plans soon, and we're still waiting for Kobra to tell Mallory what he wants her for."
They seemed to heave a collective sigh as they thought about how much longer they might have to wait for that.
"All right, we should get back to work so they don't get suspicious," Robin said. "I'm going to sneak off and do a little more looking. Make some noise when you leave so I can slip away."
They got up and Wally tripped on his robe and brought the girls down. In the commotion, Mallory watched Robin slip out the door and dart down the hall. Worry tugged at her chest. He was pressing his luck, and she didn't want anything to happen to him. She realized that it was remarkable, the similarities in the way she felt about Peter and Robin. She just hoped that he wouldn't get too comfortable with no one paying attention to him and start to get careless.
