Do y'all like Brek? I'm starting to plan out how the last few gap years are going to go, and I'm a little stuck, so I just need to know what y'all like about the story and what you don't like so I can get some ideas. Do y'all like Brek or Isaiah or do you want someone entirely new? And if you want a new person to date Mallory, who? Do you like the way I'm handling the show's characters, or is there someone you think I could include more or handle better? Give me some feedback. Anyway, enjoy and please review!
It was the night before the Time Trapper would show up in the future, and the Legion had just had a meeting to go over the final plans before giving each other grim nods and going to their rooms to prepare themselves for what was to come. Brek went to his room and laid on his bed, staring at the ceiling, guilt threatening to tear him apart from the inside. How could he go through with this? Sure, he'd been on board with it when Kara had first come up with the plan and the Legion sent the four of them to the past to enact it, but that felt like a lifetime ago. Could it really have only been four months ago?
"Actually, three and a half," Brainy's voice corrected him in his head. Brek pushed the voice away angrily. What had they done? There would be no going back after they completed their mission. The League and the team would never look at them the same again. An image of Inferno's face flashed behind his lids. Her face was so fresh and innocent, her smile sweet and pure. How would he be able to live knowing what she would think of him after tomorrow?
Someone knocked on his door and he jumped to a sitting position. "What?" he asked, his voice shot through with alarm. It's just nerves, he told himself, willing his heart to slow down. It'll be fine. The guilt inside refused to let the lie take hold.
Mallory walked in, a concerned look on her face. "You ok? You sounded a little stressed," she said.
"Oh, yeah, I'm fine, you just startled me," he replied.
Mallory walked over and sat on the foot of the bed, curling her legs under her. "I was bored, thought I'd come see if you wanted to do something," she said when she got comfortable.
"Not tonight," he replied, scooting up so he could rest his back against the headboard.
"You sure you're ok?" she asked, studying his face intently, her eyes squinted slightly. Brek sighed, knowing it was no use to lie to her.
"I was thinking about our mission," he told her. Mallory tilted her head, then moved to sit beside him.
"It's coming soon, isn't it?" she asked.
Brek nodded. "We have to leave in a few hours."
Mallory looked at him, surprised. "Are you coming back to the cave when you're done?" she asked. Brek shook his head, and she nodded and sighed. "I guess we knew this wouldn't last forever," she said quietly, looking away.
"Believe me, I wish I could stay here, in this time, with you," he said.
"Why can't you?" Mallory asked.
Brek sighed. "If I stayed, things would be different between us. You wouldn't see me the same way,"
"Why not?" Mallory asked.
"Our mission, people could get hurt. I'm worried about the way you're going to remember me if that happens," he said.
Mallory took his hand in hers, lacing her fingers through his. "Brek, you'll do fine. You and the rest of the Legion are a good team. You're some of the most capable people I've ever met, and that's coming from someone who is surrounded by heroes every day. And you're a good person. I know you won't let anyone get hurt, not if you can help it."
Brek looked at her, saw the sincerity in her eyes, and the guilt dug deeper. "You wouldn't say that if you knew what we're going to do," he said quietly.
Mallory stared at him, concern starting to show on her face. "Brek, what are you talking about?" she asked.
Brek sighed. Should he tell her or not? If he told her, his teammates would never forgive him and he would be sentencing his time to slavery. If he didn't, he would lose her without ever getting the change to explain why they had to do this. He sighed. "Nothing, I shouldn't have said that much." He forced a smile on his face. "I'm glad you came, though. I was hoping to say goodbye before we left."
Mallory put her head on his shoulder, and his arm went around her instinctively. "Guess I know why Kara stayed in the thirtieth century. Man, I thought we'd have more time."
"Yeah, I guess it was a bad idea to get involved when we knew this was going to happen."
Mallory shook her head. "No, you were right. It's better than never knowing. I just wish we hated each other. That would've been a whole lot easier than this."
He chuckled and rested his head on hers. "Yeah, it would've," he agreed.
Mallory's phone rang, and she gave him an apologetic look before answering it. "Yeah, Rob?" she listened for a moment, then said, "Yeah, ok, I'll be there in a minute." She hung up and looked at Brek. "I've got to go, I am so sorry. I should be back before you leave."
Brek nodded. What else could he do? He watched as she left the room and started down the hall, feeling more alone than he ever had in his life.
Mallory made her way through the Gotham streets, a black hoodie and cap on, her eyes constantly shifting, taking in her surroundings. Being on the Gotham streets out of costume made her feel vulnerable, and she didn't like that. She found the alley that Robin had told her to meet him in and climbed onto the fire escape to wait. It didn't take long for the snap of a cape and a dull echo to draw her attention to the level above her.
"What was the SOS for?" Robin asked, jumping down to be on the same platform as her.
Mallory looked at her phone where she'd sent him the text to call her after Brek told her about the mission. "It's the Legion. I think they're here to do something bad. You're the best detective I know, there has to be something you can do to figure out why exactly they're here."
Robin gave her a look. "What makes you think that? They've been here three months and they haven't done anything wrong."
"Just something Brek told me. Can't you hack into their computers and take a look? Just so I can have some peace of mind?"
Robin shrugged. "Sure. If they did anything on a computer in the cave, they would have had to go through the cave's secure network. And I can find anything that's ever gone through that network."
Mallory smiled. "I'll have to let Wally know that next time he wants to look up conspiracy theories on Batman."
Robin chuckled. "Oh, Batman knows about that. He goes through everything every few months." Mallory laughed softly and leaned against the rail, waiting for the boy wonder to finish. "Why are you in civies?" he asked as he typed.
Mallory shrugged. "I just figured the last thing we would need would be a spotlight showing where we went. Besides, Brek thinks you called me, so I didn't want to wait too long before getting out of the cave."
Robin nodded, then his face broke into a grin. "Got it! Huh, no wonder Batman didn't see this. It's triple encrypted, and most of them are dummy files."
"Why would Brainy do that unless he had something to hide?" Mallory asked, starting to get a bad feeling.
Robin didn't bother to answer, just kept scanning the files. "Oh, wow," he muttered.
"What?" Mallory asked, moving to see the screen.
"They're here because the future world is taken over by someone called the Time Trapper. They're going to try to stop him before he does something to this time that will make the world give in to his rule."
"What could he possibly do that would do that?" Mallory asked.
Robin scanned some more. "Destroy Superman," he told her.
Mallory scoffed. "Yeah, right. How exactly does he plan to kill the most powerful guy on the planet?" she asked.
Robin shook his head. "Not kill him, destroy him. Make the public turn on him, make them lose faith in him, then get rid of him. Superman is the symbol of freedom to the world, but it wouldn't take much for him to become the opposite."
"Except that he wouldn't allow it," Mallory said.
"It wouldn't be the first time he's been mind controlled," Robin pointed out.
Mallory's eyes widened. "We have to do something. Why didn't they ask for help? This is too important to leave to four people," she said, then she went to the edge. "Come on, we have to tell the League."
"Mal, wait," Robin said. Something changed in his voice, and Mallory turned to see him looking at her grimly.
"What?" she asked.
"The Legion isn't here to capture Time Trapper," he said.
Mallory looked at him, confused. "What are you talking about?" she asked.
He closed the screen and looked at her, his face dead serious. "They're here to kill him."
