Sorry it's so short, I'll try to make the chapters longer from now on. Hope you like it, please review.
"You hungry?" Megan asked when Mallory showed up in the cave after the meeting.
"A little. What'd ya make?" The martian nodded to the stove, and Mallory glanced into the pot. "Ramen? Since when do you like cheap noodles in orange packaging?" the pyrokinetic asked, quoting her friend from when Wally had first introduced her to the dish.
Megan shrugged. "That was dry, turns out it's not so bad when it's cooked," she said, flipping the page of her book.
"Told you it would be," Mallory said. She took her bowl to the counter and sat down, glancing at the magazine her friend was looking through. "What's that?" she asked, heating her bowl in her hand before taking a bite.
"Nothing, really. I just wanted a distraction," Megan said.
"What's up?"
Megan took a long moment to answer. "Well, Gar has a buyer for the sanctuary," she said slowly.
Mallory took a breath and set her bowl on the counter. "Wow. So, uh, he's really going to sell it?" she asked. Megan nodded. "And he's really ok with that?" she pressed gently.
Megan shook her head. "I don't know. He seems to be ok with it. I guess I'm just worried that once it's gone, he'll regret it."
Mallory tilted her head. "Maybe, but he'll always be able to go visit, right?"
Megan nodded. "Yeah, that's going in the bill of sale, he'll still own a small part of it, he just won't be in charge of running anything."
Mallory nodded. "Ok, so it's not like it'll be gone forever. And it'll give him some money in the bank, that's always good, right?" Megan nodded again, but her face was downcast, and she seemed to be staring into the distance. Mallory sighed and leaned forward in her seat. "Are you sure you're going to be ok with someone else owning the sanctuary?" she asked.
Megan looked up sharply, her mouth open to disagree, but nothing came out, and she finally let out a breath, biting her lower lip.
"M'gaan, Marie was an important part of your life, too. It's ok if you don't want to see the place go to some stranger," Mallory said.
The Martian shook her head. "No, it's fine. This has to be Gar's decision."
Before Mallory could reply, Gar and Peter came out of the training room, their shorts and t-shirts bearing different Justice League symbols. Mallory smirked when she saw Peter sporting a Supersymbol on his shirt and batsymbols running down the length of his shorts. Gar's gym clothes were Green Lantern and Flash.
"Hey, Mallory, when are we going on patrol?" Peter asked.
Mallory chuckled and shook her head. "You don't waste any time, do you? If you'll let me eat without pestering me about taking too long, I'll take you out tonight. That sound good?" She couldn't help but smile at her brother's grin.
"Yeah, that sounds great!" he said, his excitement bubbling to the surface.
"Do you still fit in the old gear?" she asked.
"Yeah, and it's still in your closet," he replied.
Gar punched him in the arm, his grin just as wide as Peter's. "Dude, that's schway! You're really gonna join the team?" Mallory and Megan exchanged a look at the Legion's word.
"Yeah, that's what Nightwing said. I just have to get some experience." The boys settled on the sofa, pulling out the game controllers.
"Cool. What are you gonna call yourself?" Gar asked.
"Huh, I don't know. I want it to be something cool, like Night Shock or Night Crawler or Night Ninja."
"I'm sensing a theme here," Mallory teased from the kitchen.
"Oh, stay out of it," Peter shot back.
Mallory raised her eyebrows slightly. "Oh, ok, I see. You're going on one official patrol and suddenly you're the next Batman, huh?"
Megan chuckled. "Oh, give him a break, Mal. Gar was just as bad on his first mission with the team, remember?"
"Yeah, but that was his first mission. Peter isn't even doing a mission, just a patrol," she replied.
"Oh, shut up. Like you weren't excited when you got asked to join the League."
Mallory shrugged. "Not at the time, but go ahead with your discussion, I'm interested to hear Gar's suggestions."
The boys shook their heads in annoyance while their sisters shared an amused look. After they finished the game, Mallory told Peter to get the suit on and they zetaed to Metropolis. When they appeared within sight of the Daily Planet, Peter looked at her with surprise.
"What?" Mallory asked.
He shrugged. "I don't know, I guess I just thought you'd want me to start in some quiet city like you did last time you let me come on a patrol," he said.
"Yeah, well, back then I really didn't want you to do this. Now, I know you're going to do it with or without me, so I just want to make sure that you're prepared when you go out in the field. Now come on, let's go. If the night turns out to be a flop, we can stop by that bakery I like and I'll buy you a shoesole."
Peter grinned. "Deal," he said, and he pulled a grappling hook out of the belt.
Mallory nodded, impressed at how much Dick had taught him over the years. She didn't know when he would've taught him to use it, but of course it would be an important skill for a hero without flight to have. She flamed up and they went through the city, sticking to parts where the crime tended to be less destructive. Most of the night had gone by before they finally came across three men robbing a convenience store. They stopped on the roof to assess the situation, and Mallory turned to her brother.
"Ok, walk me through it. What would you do if I wasn't here?" she said.
Peter stared at the scene, and she could almost see him calculating the situation. "Well, it doesn't look like there's a back entrance, so I'd go down to the sidewalk and go in the front door, block their exit. I'm guessing that they're armed, so I'd either throw down some smoke pellets or kill the lights, disarm them in the initial surprise, and fight them until they're down."
Mallory nodded slowly. "Ok, show me," she said.
Peter stared at her in surprise, a small smile on his face. "Seriously?" he asked.
Mallory grinned and ruffled his hair. "Yeah, go on. I'm feeling a little lazy tonight. I'll keep an eye on you from up here. Just relax and trust your instincts, and remember that the suit's kevlar, but think of it like it's paper."
Peter nodded and shot his line down to a street light. He took a breath, steadying himself, then he jumped off the roof, swinging down to the street. Mallory fought the little wave of panic as she watched her little brother go towards the danger, schooling herself to stay calm and keep a critical eye on the situation. He'd be fine, he could take care of himself. He'd had some of the best teachers in the world. He knew what he was doing.
She watched as the lights blinked in the store, and after a few moments, one of the robbers came barreling out of the front door, making a break for a car parked down the block. She was about to jump down to take care of it, but Peter came out of the door a split second later, and he threw a line towards the robber, which wrapped around the guy's legs and he ended up slamming into the pavement. Peter cuffed him and brought him back to the store, then he came back out and shot his line back up to the roof. When he was standing beside Mallory a moment later, he was grinning from ear to ear and panting slightly.
"Well, I guess that means I don't get a snack, huh?" he asked.
Mallory chuckled as the sound of sirens came into earshot. "Yup, guess so," she said.
What do y'all think about Peter starting to patrol? I don't usually like shows where everyone connected to the main character suddenly gets superpowers or becomes a vigilante, and I didn't originally intend for Peter to actually join the team, but I didn't really see a way to avoid it once it was already kind of written in. Review and let me know what you think.
