Sinister was moving his prisoners to the dungeons in preparation for his grand plan. "I'm afraid the accommodations are hardly first-class, but you will only be here until the X-Men join us."
Magneto, Vlad, Xavier, Jean, and Morph were all led into a prison cell.
"You should feel honored." Sinister told them. "You will all play an important part in this momentous event." He closed the door and left to get everything ready.
Magneto shouted at his retreating form. "Your plan is doomed, Sinister. You underestimate the X-Men."
"Daniel as well." Vlad added. "Trust me, I've done it before, so I know."
Xavier groaned as he held his head in pain. "I have summoned the X-Men into a trap." He said with guilt.
The Blackbird landed in the snow.
"These are the coordinates the professor gave us?" Scott said in confusion.
Beast was also perplexed by the location. "An uncharted tropical valley hidden in Antarctica? This is fantastic."
"Ok, I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or genuinely interested in studying this place." Danny commented.
"Honestly, it's a little bit of both." Beast replied.
They all got out and found the professor's crashed jet.
"Not his best landing." Wolverine said.
"Search the wreckage for clues." Cyclops said to the rest of the team.
As Danny stepped foot out of the Blackbird, he collapsed to the snow.
Rogue went over to him. "Danny! What's wrong?"
Danny saw the rings pass over him as he turned human against his will. He tried to go ghost but wasn't able to.
"I can't go ghost!" He cried to everyone. Danny tried to go intangible or invisible. He tried to use any of his powers, but nothing happened. "Something's turned off my powers!"
All the X-Men were looking at Danny with concern. What could have affected his powers? Not only that, but with Danny out of the picture, the threat was getting even more real.
"Let's just find the professor so we can get out of this place." Rogue said, worried about Danny being powerless. She tried to lift the professor's jet, but she could hardly make it move. "Can't lift it. My powers, they're gone."
"Don't worry, Rogue." Gambit pulled out a card. "First, we charge the card." He then saw that the card wasn't glowing with his energy. "No! Gambit have no power either."
Scott pulled off his visor and opened his eyes, only for no red blast to come out.
Storm noticed this. "Cyclops, your eyes!"
"I know." Scott said, finally taking in the fact that he can see without destroying anything just by looking at it.
"Our powers have abandoned us." Storm said as she tried to summon the elements but found she couldn't.
"Curious." Beast said. "This phenomenon cannot be natural. I'm at a loss to explain it."
"Maybe there's some kind of weird energy in this place." Danny guessed. "And it simply blocked our powers."
"So it's not permanent, then?" Rogue asked.
"Well, it only started when we got here, so I guess if we leave, then our powers will return." Danny guessed. "But that means we'll have to save the professor without our powers."
"You know what they say: easy come, easy go." Ruckus said as he arrived with the rest of the Nasty Boys and the mutates. "Surrender to us now, and Mr. Sinister just might let you live."
"Well, in my case, he's too late." Danny said, referring to him being half dead.
"Mr. Sinister has plans for you, ex-X-Men." Ruckus said.
"We'll never surrender to Sinister." Scott vowed. "We took you apart once, Ruckus, and we can do it again."
"Scott, we had powers last time." Danny reminded him. "Although." He pondered. "Maybe they can't use their powers either."
"We aren't affected." Ruckus said.
"Oh, we're fucked then." Danny said.
"Now I think you better watch your mouth and mine." Ruckus let out his scream attack. He then gestured to the other villains. "Get them!"
Gorgeous George grabbed Rogue.
"Put me down, you gob of goop." Rogue demanded.
"You heard the lady." Danny said as Gorgeous George grabbed him as well. "Let her go."
"Or you'll do what, without your powers?" Gorgeous George taunted.
Amphibius charged at Storm, only for her to kick him aside. "I do not need the elements to deal with a toad like you."
She then heard the roar of a pterodactyl as a skyrider flew towards her. The rider jumped off and tackled Storm, only to be thrown off.
Ruckus came up from behind Storm and held her in his grip. "Sorry, lady. You got a date with a man in a cape."
Scott was backing away from Slab when he grabbed a piece of the professor's jet to use as a shield.
"You'll need more than that piece of tin to hide behind." Slab tried to punch Scott, but the piece of metal protected him. Slab slapped it out of his hands. "You're not so much. What did Mr. S ever see in you, anyhow?" He threw Scott aside.
Beast was dealing with another skyrider when he was able to knock him off his dinosaur. As he growled at his enemy, Barbarus came up behind Beast and threw him into the wrecked ship.
Lupo growled at Wolverine as Hairbag approached him.
"It'll be a pleasure ripping you apart." Hairbag said with glee.
"Good luck, pal." Wolverine pulled out his claws. "There's nothing mutant about these."
He managed to knock Hairbag to the ground and was about to stab him. "They may get me, but I'm taking your ugly carcass out first." Wolverine promised.
"Feeling dizzy?" Vertigo came up to him and tried to attack his mind.
Wolverine tried to get away, but Vertigo followed him. "Your mind reels from the power of Vertigo." She said. "There is no up nor down, no left nor right."
"Lady, you make me sick." Wolverine said in disgust as he kept backing up.
"On your knees!" Vertigo ordered.
Wolverine refused. "No."
"Surrender to Vertigo!" She commanded.
"Never!" Wolverine cried before he dived off a cliff and landed at the bottom of a waterfall. "I could use some mutant healing power right about now." He muttered. "Got to get moving before those maggots pick up my trail."
"Quick!" Ruckus said to the others. "We're gonna lose him in the jungle." He turned to a pair of skyriders. "Track down Wolverine. If he won't be taken, destroy him."
The skyriders flew out in search of Wolverine as he hid behind a tree. "They don't waste any time." He limped away.
Ruckus turned to the rest of the captive X-Men. "You belong to Mr. Sinister now. If you give us no trouble, you may live longer."
"No matter what Sinister has planned for us, we'll never belong to him." Scott said.
"Shut up and get moving." Slab started escorting the captured X-Men to Sinister.
Barbarus opened up the entrance to a cave as the X-Men were led into it.
Wolverine was evading a skyrider as it fired an arrow. Performing several somersaults and other parkour moves, Wolverine dodged all their projectiles.
Eventually, he was able to get them off his trail. As he took a moment to catch his breath, he smelled something. Instantly, he got out of the way of a dinosaur trying to have him as its next meal.
"What's this? Half time?" Wolverine snarked as the dinosaur tried to bite him again but failed. Wolverine tried to take it down with his bare hands, but realized it was a lost cause and continued running.
As he ran, the dinosaur pursued him, only to run into an even bigger dinosaur that chased it away.
Wolverine, although free of dinosaurs, wasn't alone, as Ka-Zar and Zabu observed him from a tree branch. Despite the element of surprise, Wolverine sniffed out Ka-Zar and managed to turn the tables on him.
"I don't like being tracked, and you need a shower." Logan said.
"Don't pretend you don't know Ka-Zar, mutant." Ka-Zar kept approaching Logan, who backed up. "Your kind have enslaved the peoples of the Savage Land. Take me to your master, or you will pay for your crimes."
"Look, nature boy, there's some guys on my tail." Logan informed him. "I got no time for conversation."
Logan went to rescue his friends when Ka-Zar attacked him.
"Then perish!"
They fought for a bit until Wolverine knocked the native to the ground. "You should have minded your own business."
Zabu tried to defend his master, but Wolverine threw him off.
"I don't know who you think I am, but one thing I don't have is a master." Logan said.
Zabu was about to attack again when Ka-Zar stopped him.
"No, Zabu!" He turned his attention back to Logan. "You do not belong to the outlander known as Sinister?"
"Belong to him?" Wolverine scoffed. "I'm down in this fern bar to rip him a new navel."
"Then join me." Ka-Zar propositioned. "The others who opposed Sinister are imprisoned in the great citadel. I am the only one left."
"Not anymore, bub." Logan replied.
The sound of more skyriders approaching was heard.
One made a dive for Wolverine, only for Logan to pull the rider off. Another tried the same with Ka-Zar, only to meet the same fate. Ka-Zar then used his spear as a javelin to launch himself at one of the pterodactyls.
A third skyrider dived down to attack Ka-Zar, but the hunter got out of the way and knocked the rider into the river below.
Ka-Zar landed his dinosaur on the ground. "Come, my friend! They have given us the way to attack the citadel." He offered his hand.
"Attack is one of my favorite words, and the name's Wolverine." Logan shook his hand and climbed up on the dinosaur. "Does this leather chicken have seatbelts?"
"You must remain here, Zabu." Ka-Zar told his companion. "If we do not return, avenge us."
They flew off towards the citadel.
The X-Men were all placed in a cell.
"You join us at last." Sinister said. "I trust your defeat wasn't too tiring."
Scott glared at his captor. "Skip the small talk, Sinister!"
"Your eyes can destroy, but they cannot see." Sinister replied.
"You've got us, but we don't have to listen to your drivel." Scott remarked as the other prisoners were brought forward and chained up.
"Jean!" The X-Men all cried.
They did the same when the professor was brought forward.
"Professor!"
"You're alive!" Scott cried in relief.
Morph was then brought out, along with Magneto.
"Morph, you're still alive." Beast said.
"And looks like they got good old bucket head as well." Rogue said when she saw Magneto.
Vlad was then brought forward.
"Vlad!" Danny cried, not expecting to see his fellow hybrid here.
"Daniel!" Vlad tried to move towards him, but the guards held him back.
"What are you doing here?" Danny asked his former archnemesis.
"I found some strange energy readings here, and I came to investigate." Vlad explained. "It is good to see you, my dear boy, but I wish it was under better circumstances."
Danny snorted. "I know the feeling."
Jean was placed with the other X-Men while Morph, Xavier, and Magneto were chained to a wall.
"We have everything we need." Sinister said in approval. "Now we can begin."
"What about Wolverine?" Ruckus asked.
Sinister brushed the concern off. "The operation will go fine without him, and he won't continue to live either way."
"What are you talking about?" Scott demanded.
"I'm talking about bringing in the most ultimate expression of power." Sinister answered. "For years I've been watching you, Summers, and Jean Grey, believing that you two would lead to the creation of the perfect being."
Sinister then chuckled. "But that was before I was contacted by him."
"Him?" Rogue asked.
"I don't know his name, but he is extraordinary." Sinister said. "He contacted me telepathically, telling me what I needed to do to complete my goal."
"And what did he tell you?" Danny asked, feeling like something very bad was happening.
"He told me about you, Daniel Fenton." Sinister gazed at him. "How much of an amazing creature you were. A hybrid of a human and a ghost."
"Ghosts?" Magneto asked. "What are you talking about?"
"I mean ghosts." Sinister replied. "Spirits, apparitions, posthuman consciousness taken form after death. And apparently, there are a few who are able to walk the line between life and death. Hybrids. Like Daniel and Vladimir."
Magneto looked at Vlad, who was being held captive by Barbarus. "You're half ghost?"
Vlad nodded, hating how his secret was revealed.
"I never believed there was more than one hybrid." Xavier said in awe. "Other than Dani, of course."
The other X-Men couldn't believe it either.
"He's just like Danny." Scott said.
"I don't believe it." Jean commented.
Rogue turned to Danny. "How come you never told us, sugar?"
Danny shrugged. "It wasn't my secret to give."
Jubilee widened her eyes at the reveal. "You mean Vlad Masters is Vlad Plasmius, your archenemy?"
Danny told Jubilee about Vlad, not mentioning that he was a hybrid or who his human identity was.
"Well, he was." Danny answered. "We kinda had a truce after the deaths of my friends and family."
"Wait, you mean that man was your arch enemy?" Rogue took a closer look at the man who used to battle her boyfriend.
"Yep." Danny said before turning to Sinister. "So what else did your informant tell you?"
Sinister gave an evil smirk. "He told me of a special operation. That your humanity squandered your potential and that it must be removed."
Danny's heart would've been pounding if it could still beat. Operation? Humanity removed? That meant the person who contacted Sinister was...
Dan.
Danny started to hyperventilate as he pondered this new development. How did he talk to Sinister? The scientist did say that he spoke to him telepathically, which thankfully meant Dan was still locked up in that thermos.
"What operation?" Danny interrogated.
Sinister gestured to Amphibius, who brought out something very familiar to Danny.
The ghost gauntlets.
"Only that Vladimir here had to use these gauntlets to remove your human half." Sinister said. "He was very specific that Vlad had to be the one to do it. He also told me that it would help if I gathered all of the ones you care about. Your foster sister. Your friends. Your girlfriend. He said that once you were brought to your true potential, you would need to cut off all of your previous attachments to embrace your destiny."
"That's why you captured all of us." Scott figured out. "But why Magneto?"
"The mutates only agreed to help if I let them kill Magneto afterward." Sinister said dismissively. "Now Vladimir." Vlad was pushed forward as Sinister handed him the gauntlets. "You know what you need to do."
"Vlad! No!" Danny screamed as if the world was going to end. "You can't let this happen!"
Rogue tried to calm her man down. "Danny, what's going on?" Rogue heard the whole thing about separating his human half, which worried her as she still remembered how cruel Phantom was when he was free of Fenton. But Rogue felt that this was going to be even worse. A thousand times worse.
"Guys, if he goes through with this operation, then we're all done for." Danny said to his teammates. "It'll be worse than Apocalypse, Magneto, or even all the Sentinels in the world."
The X-Men took in the seriousness as they realized that Danny wasn't overreacting.
"Now let us begin." Sinister said as Gorgeous George went to get Danny.
Danny looked at Rogue with fear in his eyes. "Rogue, I'm scared. I don't think we're getting out of this." Tears streamed down his face as he looked at the woman he loved. "I love you, Rogue. I just wish we could've spent more time together."
"It's going to be okay, Danny." Rogue rubbed his cheek. "I'm not going to let anything happen to you."
Danny then turned to Jubilee. "Jubilee, I love you, kiddo. You've been a great sister, and I'm proud to see how far you've come with your powers." He brought her into a hug.
"I love you too, Danny." Jubilee said tearfully.
Danny looked at all the others. "You guys have been my family. I just wanted to thank you for taking me in and giving me a new purpose. It's been an honor to have been an X-Men."
"Don't talk like that, Danny!" Scott scolded. "We're going to get out of here."
Danny wished he still had Scott's hope. "We never could get out, Scott. Our time is up. It's been up for a long time."
As Danny was saying his last goodbyes, Wolverine and Ka-Zar had arrived at the Citadel.
"Bring him out." Sinister ordered.
"I love you guys." Danny then gave Rogue one last kiss. If he was going to lose his humanity, then the last thing he wanted to feel was the love he had for this beautiful woman.
Gorgeous George pulled Danny away as Rogue tried to reach for him.
"No!" Rogue cried as the door was slammed in her face. "Get off him!"
Wolverine and Ka-Zar reached the bottom of some stairs when Ka-Zar stopped him.
"My people are held down below." Ka-Zar pointed to a corridor. "Sinister's diabolical machines lie that way." He pointed down the hall to their left.
"That's where my friends will be." Wolverine said.
Danny was strapped to a metal table as Vlad placed the gauntlets on.
"Vlad." Danny looked at his fellow hybrid. "For what it's worth, thank you for all your help after their deaths. I really appreciate it."
Vlad had a somber look on his face. "It's going to be okay, Daniel." He tried to reassure him.
Danny shook his head. "No. You don't know what's going to happen."
Sinister was getting impatient. "Hurry up, Masters."
Vlad turned around and growled. "I won't go through with this."
Sinister snapped his fingers as Vertigo broke his mind.
"You were saying?" Sinister said sarcastically.
"I was saying that it's about time someone shut you up permanently." Wolverine snarled as he pulled out his claws and charged at Sinister, only to be hit by Gorgeous George and held in Slab's unbreakable grip.
"It's good that you're here, Wolverine." Sinister grinned at him. "Now everything is complete." He turned to the brainwashed Vlad. "What are you waiting for? Do it!"
Ka-Zar turned around a corner and saw Shanna and the others locked up. He managed to evade the guard's gaze as he made eye contact with Shanna.
"Yoo-hoo." Shanna said to the guard as she motioned for him to come closer.
When the guard did, Ka-Zar knocked him out and took his key.
"Ka-Zar!" Shanna was delighted to see her husband. "I knew you would come for us."
"Shanna." Ka-Zar embraced his wife after unlocking the door.
Danny tried to break out of his restraints as Vlad came closer with the claws of the gauntlets extended. Danny felt like he could see his own fear and terror reflected back through them.
"Sinister! You don't know what you're doing!" Danny tried to reason with Sinister. "The one who told you about this! He can't be trusted! He only brings pain and devastation! He's using you!"
Sinister ignored Danny. "He did say that you would resist. No matter, I will have the perfect being."
Vlad was within arms reach as Danny began to scream out for anyone to save him.
"Help! Help! Anyone! Save us! Save us!"
All the prisoners were watching this, feeling dread in their hearts. The X-Men have never seen Danny this scared before. Neither did Jubilee, who always looked up to her foster brother because he never seemed to show fear in any situation.
Rogue couldn't stop her tears at seeing her boyfriend break down.
Magneto never thought he would hear Danny beg. After the plant incident, Magneto wanted nothing more than that. But now he realized that it wasn't what he wanted. Not like this.
Ka-Zar and his friends charged in, ready to put an end to Sinister once and for all.
"Stop them!" Sinister ordered.
Ruckus let out a scream, pushing them back as a metal door closed.
"I've had enough of this!" Sinister turned to Vlad. "Finish this now!"
The gauntlets soon made contact and phased through Danny. He could feel their cold, firm grip over his ghost half. Knowing that this was the end, Danny gave one last look at the people he cared about.
'I'm sorry.' His expression said.
Vlad pulled back, and in his hands was Phantom.
Sinister was delighted. "It is starting."
Vertigo's influence on Vlad vanished as the elder hybrid looked at Phantom.
Phantom snarled and knocked Vlad aside, causing the gauntlets to fall off.
In a flash, Phantom placed his hands in them and waved them threateningly in front of Vlad.
Everyone watched with baited breath to see what Phantom would do next.
Phantom raised his arms, ready to swipe at Vlad, when...
He turned around and thrust the gauntlets into Sinister's machine.
"What!" Sinister cried.
Phantom smirked as the machine sparked before it exploded, destroying the gauntlets as well.
Without it, the X-Men's powers were restored.
Rogue busted out of her cell, grabbed Slab, and threw him at Gorgeous George.
"This'll teach you to keep your paws off my man."
Gambit charged a card. "The name is Gambit. Remember it." He threw it at Gorgeous George, causing his goop to explode everywhere.
Working as a team, the X-Men battled the Nasty Boys and the mutates.
Phantom smiled at the scene before merging back with Fenton.
Now back as one and with his powers working, Danny phased out of his restraints and offered his hand to Vlad. "Ready to give this guy the ultimate beatdown?"
Vlad smirked as he got up and transformed into Plasmius.
The two then confronted Sinister.
Sinister was angered beyond belief at his plans being ruined. "You deny the future, so you shall not live to see it."
"Two things." Danny said. "One, we're already dead. Two, the future is overrated."
The hybrids blasted Sinister through a wall. Groaning in pain, he hit a button on his wrist, causing Morph's mind control to activate as he made his way to the machine and pulled out a gun.
Xavier saw this. "Morph, no! Fight Sinister's mind control."
"Why should I?" Morph retorted as he hit Xavier in the shoulder. He then aimed at Danny. "They think they're safe, but they've forgotten about good old Morph."
Xavier connected his mind with Morphs.
"Morph, you're part of the team." Xavier spoke telepathically. "No matter what Sinister has done to you, you are and will always be one of the X-Men."
"The X-Men." Morph finally got to his senses and threw the gun aside.
Danny and Vlad kept blasting Sinister until he exploded.
Everyone looked on as Brainchild went to collect the pieces of his master. "Master! I'll save you, master."
The pieces started to reform, as they could still hear Sinister's voice.
"The future cannot be destroyed so easily." Sinister said.
Danny chuckled. "If you only knew the truth." Danny let out a small ghostly wail that scattered the pieces all over the Savage Land.
"It will be a while before he pulls himself back together." Danny joked.
Sauron, who was secretly watching all of this, pressed a switch, causing the citadel to start exploding.
"The detonations are intensifying." Beast warned them.
"Everybody out of here!" Cyclops ordered.
They all managed to get out of the Citadel before it finally collapsed.
"I hope Sinister has some good insurance." Danny quipped.
As if all the anxieties had disappeared, everyone started laughing. Even Magneto couldn't resist a chuckle.
Rogue brought Danny in for a hug and kissed him. "I'm so glad you're okay, spooky."
"Yeah, you had us scared there, Danny." Jubilee said. "When you were separated, why did Phantom help us escape? How come he wasn't a jerk like last time?"
Danny wasn't sure. "I don't really know. I'm just happy that it didn't go the way I thought it would. I'm also glad my powers are back."
Vlad hummed in agreement. "Indeed, it's good to have them back."
The X-Men then remembered Vlad as they looked at his ghost form.
"Whoa." Jubilee said. "Dracula called. He says he's suing you."
Vlad rolled his eyes. "Hilarious."
"So you have ghost powers like Danny?" Rogue asked. "How did that happen?"
Vlad sighed. "I was friends with Daniel's parents in college. We were building a prototype for what would eventually become the ghost portal when an accident happened. I was hit by the portal's blast and hospitalized. Soon I started training my powers, which brings us here now. Any questions?"
"No, but I've got a couple things to say." Jubilee said. "You're a jerk for what you did to Danny. Holding him hostage, arming a classmate of his with ghost weapons to hunt him down, releasing the ghost king, and all the times you've hurt him."
The X-Men just stood there and listened as Jubilee listed all the things Vlad had done in the past.
Rogue held her fists up, ready to lay the beatdown on Vlad. "Why you vampiric-looking son of..."
Danny held her arm. "Rogue, calm down. That's all in the past. I won't deny that what Vlad did wasn't wrong. But we've moved past all that. Turns out, despite all the evil planning and scheming, he's not such a bad guy. I mean, he did give his summer home to the Morlocks."
Rogue relented but gave Vlad one last glare. "You so much as hurt him, I will make you a full ghost."
Vlad felt a shiver go down his spine. Ghost powers or not, he would do his best not to incur this woman's wrath.
"It will take time to put right what Sinister tried to destroy." Xavier observed as the X-Men helped Ka-Zar and the others rebuild their village. Even Vlad pitched in. "Thankfully, the X-Men have proved what I'd always hoped: that, in my absence, they can carry on together with our important work."
Xavier then saw Morph being loaded up on the Blackbird. "When we return home, I will be able to remove the device Sinister implanted in Morph, but removing the psychic damage will take longer."
"It was good to fight alongside you again, Charles." Magneto said.
"Then join me in my work." Xavier offered.
Magneto shook his head. "That can never be. We each have our own destiny. Only the future will prove which one is right." He then lifted off into the air and flew away.
Xavier waved goodbye. "Goodbye, my friend."
When they were all done, the X-Men got on the Blackbird and flew home while Sauron watched from a distance.
"The Savage Land is cleansed of outlanders." Sauron said. "Now its true future begins."
He laughed as he flew off to prepare his plans.
On the beach, Sinister was slowly pulling himself back together as he also let out an evil laugh.
When they all returned to the institute, Danny headed straight to the ghost portal and made his way to Clockwork's lair.
Danny found the ghost overlooking the time stream.
"Clockwork, I've got bad news." He said. "Sinister, he said that Dan spoke to him telepathically."
Clockwork nodded. "I saw. Horrible that it happened, but I've placed additional seals on the thermos. Dan won't be contacting anyone else through telepathy."
Danny sighed in relief, but he had one more question. "How come you didn't do anything to stop him?"
Clockwork looked at Danny, and the hybrid couldn't help but step back when he saw the vulnerable look in his eyes.
"I didn't see it happening." Clockwork said. "Dan's energy, mixed with one of my medallions that he has, caused some kind of phenomenon that is interfering with my omnipotence. And it's slowly growing stronger."
"He can do that?" Danny asked as he looked at the thermos beside Clockwork in fear.
"Yes." Clockwork replied. "It is really discouraging to have my powers dampened a bit, but I can't let this stop me." He gave Danny a look of confidence. "If there's one thing I've learned from you, Daniel, it's that you don't have to be all-knowing to hope that the future will be safe."
Danny smiled at Clockwork's words. "There's also one other thing. When I was separated during the operation, how come Phantom didn't come out like he did in Dan's timeline?"
"Well, Daniel, splitting hybrids is like shuffling cards, as your friend Gambit would say." Clockwork answered. "You get something different every time, but this was due to you. Unlike in Dan's timeline, you were fighting the operation and refused to allow him to come into existence; that alone caused Phantom to receive your positive emotions."
"I see." Danny said. "Well, I better get going; Rogue says she has a surprise for me."
Clockwork chuckled. "Yes, it really is a surprise."
Danny gave one last goodbye as he left.
Clockwork then gave an amused look to the thermos.
"Nice try, Dan."
