Word of Hellbender's death soon reached the rest of the Bearded Dragons in the city. Most of them dropped their flags and fled the city, but the more stubborn ones stayed behind. But there was no sign of Gozaburo. Well, except for one. It happened the day after Hellbender's death. A carriage as large as a house and driven by a dozen snails arrived outside the city, but when the guards went to inspect it, they found it was empty. Somehow he made it into the city without anyone noticing. Johan had the feeling that the guards that were on the Bearded Dragons' payroll had snuck him into the city.

"So, how do we find this guy," Johan asked his friends as he laid on his bed, looking up at the ceiling. "I mean, the guy is as big as King Andrias, he shouldn't be hard to find. And yet somehow, his large ass managed to sneak past the gates."

"Heck if I know," said Anne as she looked on her phone. "I never even knew the guy was coming until days ago."

Johan was stumped. He looked at a newspaper sitting on the table. "What's this? 'Newtopia Festival! Games, dances, and the chance to take on the champion in the race!'"

"Festival? What festival?" asked Hop Pop.

"Ooh, it's so fun," said Marcy. "It's the annual party that celebrates the founding of Newtopia! There's all kinds of food and games. There's something there for everyone!"

"Games," said Anne, excited.

"Food?" asked Sprig.

"COUNT US IN!"

"Hold on," said Johan. "What is this champion?" Then he answered his own question, "Wait. Let me guess, Diego Brando?"

"Boo! Hiss!" jeered the kids.

"Normally I would tell you kids to behave, but in this case, you're right to boo! I hate that guy," said Hop Pop.

"He did save your life, Anne," pointed out Marcy.

"Yeah, and I got no thanks from him!" Anne crossed her arms and grumbled, "He said I shouldn't have made myself an easy target. Asshole."

"And he took partial credit for saving you," said Johan. "He claimed it was his idea." Suddenly, a lightbulb went off in his head. "Gozaburo is gonna be at the festival."

"What makes you say that?" asked Hop Pop.

"Hellbender was OBSESSED with beating him."

"He's right," said Anne. "While that guy had me running in a giant wheel like a hamster, he would go on and on about 'Ooh, Diego stole my destiny! Diego cheated! Diego this, Diego that!' And after that, I just got bored and stopped paying attention."

"What makes you think Gozaburo would want to go after Diego?"

"Like I said, Diego took partial credit for rescuing Anne, putting a target on his back. Gozaburo's going to want revenge on Passione and Diego for what happened to his son, so he'll be wanting to attend the festival to kill us all. I wouldn't be surprised if it's going to be crawling with Bearded Dragons tonight."

"Oh, this is gonna be so much fun," said Marcy as she put an arm around Anne and Johan. "This is my first Newtopia Founding Day Festival! A shame Sasha couldn't make it, though."

"Eh, we're better off without her," said Sprig dismissively.

"So, how do we get to Diego before the Dragons do?" asked Johan.

"There are four challenges, each one that will test your brass, brawn, and brain," explained Marcy. "The guy in who wins first place in all four challenges will be given the chance to face Diego."

Johan suddenly felt a shiver down his spine as he looked toward Anne and saw the competitive smirk on her face. "Oh, dear. I know that smile."

"A competition and the chance to kick Diego Brando's ass? I'm in!"

"Not if I get to him first," said Sprig. "Wah!"

He screamed as Polly pushed him to the side and shouted, "Get in line, brother! If anyone kicks that pond scum's tail it's gonna be me!"

"None of you are attending that contest," said Hop Pop. "It's too dangerous!"

Sprig gave him the stink eye. "You want a piece of him too, don't you?"

Hop Pop finally caved and shouted, "YES, I DO! Look at these citations that guy gave me for my 'investigation' of Sal's sauce factory!" He took out a whole bunch of papers out of his pockets. "I wanna send that guy to kingdom come!"

"You probably shouldn't say that out loud," said Marcy. "Considering he's still Captain of the Guard." Then she mumbled to herself, "Even if he is a pompous, selfish jerk face..."

"Regardless of our feelings toward him," said Johan. "Gozaburo will be attending the festival, so we have to get ready for an attack."

"Then it's settled," said Marcy. "Triple B and I will do the preparations while Olivia brings in the guards that we definitely know are on our side to watch over everything."

"Will there be a Piñata?" asked Polly. "I want to test my mace out on it."

City square

The festivities started at night. It very much reminded Anne of her and Johan's Frog of the Year party. Streamers hung from the light posts, food and game stands were set up, people dressed in colorful outfits were dancing to the music a band was playing, and balloons and toys were being sold on the side. Of course, signs that Marcy had a hand in it was there as the band was playing some of her favorite anime theme songs, one of them Johan recognized as the intro music from Inuyasha. Olivia was with the guards, giving them their orders. Surprisingly, King Andrias was also there at his own private booth, greeting people and signing autographs.

Johan, Marcy, the Plantars and Anne looked around. "I don't see anyone wearing gold," said Anne.

"What did you expect," said Johan. "After we killed their leader, said leader's father wants them to play safe. In all honesty, I don't see why he DIDN'T retire given how his son was an idiot and clearly ineffectual boss."

"Yeah, he seemed pretty easy to beat when you think about it," said Sprig.

"What are you talking about," asked Polly. "You weren't even there!"

"That's why I imagine it."

Hop Pop looked nervous. "What's wrong, Hopediah?" asked Johan.

"I'm not comfortable with the idea of Bessie racing against Diego's snail, Silver Bullet. I mean, Bessie's got talent and speed, but she's not a racing snail. Silver Bullet is stronger, faster and meaner! I'm convinced that thing eats five dozen eggs for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert!"

Johan assured him, "Don't worry. I'll make sure Bessie wins. You just gotta have faith in her like you always do." Nobody noticed him discreetly grab a salt shaker and slip it in his pocket.

"Shh," Marcy put a finger to her lips. "The challenges are about to begin."

A newt dressed as a carnival barker stood on top of a box and spoke into a bullhorn. "Ladies and gentlenewts, come one, come all! The games are about to begin! Do you have the courage to compete for as grand a prize as this: the bragging rights of defeating our champion, our Captain of the Guard, Diego Brando?" The moment the spotlight shone on Diego, he made a confident smirk as he waved to the cheering crowd. Anne and her friends and loved ones did not cheer at all and just folded their arms. The barker continued, "Come! Compete! Whoever proves themselves champion in four games today, shall be Diego's challenger tonight."

The crowd cheered again. Anne, the Plantars and Marcy glanced at each other. "Well, I guess this is it," said Marcy. "May the best man or amphibian win."

"I plan to," said Sprig and Anne at the same time. They then glared at each other and sparks flashed.

"Hey," said Johan. "Don't forget why we're here. We have to find Gozaburo and take him out." He paused. "And have fun."

"Have fun winning," said Polly as she and the others took off in different directions, leaving Johan alone and momentarily confused before he quickly got over it and ran off to partake in the first game.

The first game booth that Johan went to had three purple flags with a gold frog foot symbol. The booth owner said, "Welcome, welcome! The rules of this game are simple: out run your opponents, take the flag from the middle of the field, and bring it back to your starting position to score. If the opposition holds the flag, you must knock them down to steal it! Be the first to capture the flag three times, and the chance to race against Diego Brando may yet be yours!"

A simple game of Capture The Flag, huh, thought Johan.

The booth owner placed the flag somewhere in the city and fired his starting gun. It took some time, but Johan managed to find it: at the feet of the statue of Marcy. He ran and grabbed it, but unfortunately, someone spotted him and chased after him. But he managed to outrun his opponent and return to base.

The next flag was at the Museum's entrance. Unfortunately, Johan arrived too late and saw a female newt grab the flag and run off. Luckily, Johan managed to catch up with her and he tackled her to the ground and grab the flag off her and return to base.

For the third flag, Johan realized he had painted a target on his back. Almost every participant was now chasing after him as he searched around the city for the final flag. He found it under the park bench and ran like hell with a pack of newts at his heels. He returned to base just as they all piled on top of him. He stuck his hand out of the pile, showing all three flags.

"We have a winner! You've protected your flag, and captured the enemy's," said the barker. "You've proven yourself a warrior without peer and inch ever closer to victory!"

As Johan stepped out of the pile of complaining newts, he waved to a cheering crowd that had gathered to watch. He stopped when he saw a flash of gold zipping between the crowd before disappearing entirely. He shrugged it off, thinking he was seeing things.

"Welcome, welcome!" said the owner of the next booth Johan went to. "Are you ready to test yourselves with a game of speed and endurance? Many challenges lie in your path. The game is simple, but finishing it, near impossible! Start when you're ready."

Johan and the other contestants stretched their legs at the starting line. The announcer shouted the beginning of the race and Johan was off like a rocket. Billie, who was also competing, let out a curse as Johan quickly outpaced her and practically flew down the street, hopping crates and tables used as obstacles with ease. The onlookers all down the route shouted encouragements and were very entertained as he hopped from a tall stack of crates to a second story balcony to avoid other obstacles and then hopped down and rolled to start off running again.

From behind him, he thought he heard Billie shout, "How are you so fast?" But Johan was at the mark and picked up the flag showing he'd made it before turning and sprinting to the oncoming pack of contestants trying to scramble over the obstacles. Johan didn't even bother going through them. He went over them, staying on crossbeams and lattice until he was past the bulk of the crowd and went back to street level. He arrived back to the announcer as Johan, the next fastest of the contestants, was only halfway back.

The announcer's face was slack, his jaw wide open. "I've never seen anything like that!" he whispered. Once all the other contestants had staggered in, the announcer shouted, "The winner! You've proven yourself the fastest and strongest in Newtopia!" Johan could not help but smile and wave. Billie grumbled to herself as she walked off.

Again, Johan thought he saw something small and gold flash by, this time, out of Billie's ear. He quickly left to find Olivia. "Ma'am, your Book Of Memories can only keep track of anyone who signed their names in it, right," he whispered. "And if that anyone happens to include a Stand user, you'll know, right?"

"Yes, but it's useless as it is as none of the Bearded Dragons have ever signed in it," Olivia reminded him. "Why?"

"I think I saw Gozaburo's Stand. It's pretty small. However, smaller Stands have been known to be even deadlier than the bigger ones."

"I'll let the guards who are Stand users know. What are you going to do?"

"I've got two more games to play. We'll have to wait to make his move."

The next booth had a group of female newts in multicolored dresses gathered around. The announcer said, "Welcome, gentlenewts. Whether you win or lose, this will certainly be your favorite game of the day! Ladies?!" All the women held up their hands to reveal they had ribbons tied around their wrists. "Here's how the game is played: all the ladies in the district have ribbons. Your job is to obtain them. Whoever has the most before my hourglass runs out is the winner!"

With great drama, he turned the hourglass and stayed behind it, looking to the crowds. The men quickly dispersed, but Johan stayed still, waiting. Once all the competition had spread out, he put on his best smile and eased up to the first group of ladies he saw, who were eyeing him appreciatively and whispering back and forth behind their hands. "Have anything for me, belle mie?" he asked, putting on the old Joestar charm.

One of the female newts giggled. "It's that human boy. Marcy's friend."

"He's kind of cute, in a strange way."

"His golden hair."

"His feminine features."

"I almost mistook him for a girl, he's that cute!"

"I wish I could keep him for a pet. Maybe I can find more if I went with him and his human friends?"

They practically gave Johan their ribbons, all the while saying sweet nothings. Johan smiled as he accepted them...and resisted the urge to hit the women for calling him a girl. He gave a sweeping bow. "My greatest gratitude is to each of you," he said, giving another winsome smile. They all giggled as he backed away, still in his bow, and headed off to the next cluster of women he saw.

Each group Johan came across was eager to fall for his charms after his earlier stunts and he easily had thirty ribbons within very little time. Several of the girls confessed that they'd been saving their ribbons for him, and even more stated their names and where they worked, no doubt eager for him to pay a visit later on. It kind of weirded him out that they would even find him attractive. He guessed they were willing to try new things, or they were looking for a new pet.

Either way, he was happy to get the ribbons and run as fast as he could back to the judge. "We have a winner! You have more ribbons than any man here! You've proved yourself a favorite of the ladies! And are now one step closer to the greatest prize of all time!"

Johan smiled and waved, then made a beeline for the last challenge to avoid the women.

Johan went to the docks, where a small arena had been set up. "Welcome, fighters! The game is simple. There's only two rules: no weapons and no Stands. Fight until you are the last man left standing. Will it be you? Or you? Hmm? Who will win the chance to take on Diego Brando?"

Johan did learn MMA back at Earth as his father warned him not to use his Stand solely in fights.

The bell rang and the fight became a free for all and all the contestants began brawling each other, using their fists, feet, and tails to knock each other out. Johan, for his part, spent his time dodging. He didn't wish to wear down his strength when he faced Diego. So he ducked and dodged, circled and swept under.

"Another contestant down!"

Johan stayed on the move, never staying still and using all the abilities his Zio Mista had taught him. And when he saw the chance, he would shove another contender into a fight and let them have at it.

"Two down at once! It seems the numbers are starting to thin!"

Johan smirked. All he needed was to beat the remaining fighters and... "So, you're competing, too, huh?" asked Anne, much to his surprise.

"Anne?! What are you doing here?!"

"I won three games so far," she explained. "Sprig and Polly passed out after competing in the giant lice cream challenge and Hop Pop chickened out at the arm wrestling. His opponent looked like he had two racks of kabob meat for arms," she said to herself before saying out loud, "So, if I beat you, I'll be the one who'll take on Diego."

Johan smirked and got in a boxing stance. "Not if I beat you first." The bell rang and he proceeded to rapidly jab at Anne.

"Not bad, JoJo, but..." Anne quickly kicked off her shoes and was about to sideswipe Johan when he jumped back. "...I am a master of Muay Thai! Thank you, Mom, for signing me up for lessons!"

Johan smirked, then said, "Right. No holding back."

The pair of them exchanged punches and kicks, with Johan occasionally shouting "MUDA, MUDA, MUDA, MUDA!" But neither one of them backed down, they were determined to beat Diego for all the trouble he put them through. By the end of it, both competitors were sporting black eyes, bloody noses and lips and bruised cheeks. And then he saw it: the small, gold creature zipping in between fighters, coming closer and closer toward him and Anne. "ANNE! GET OUT OF THE WAY!" And then he remembered Anne wasn't a Stand user and couldn't see it.

The creature suddenly flew toward Anne and absorbed itself into her body. She went rigid, then fell to the ground. Olivia, who was acting as referee, blew a whistle. "Disqualified! Whoever used that Stand is disqualified!" But none of the contestants fessed up. Johan ran up to Anne and was about to help her up when suddenly, she slowly got back up, but with rigid and stiff movements, like a marionette.

"ANNE!" exclaimed the Plantars, who saw everything.

She looked at Johan with a dull, blank expression, and spoke in a monotone voice. "This is Under My Skin, the Stand of me, Gozaburo Hellbender." Almost every guard pointed their weapons at the girl. "I would not attack her if I were you. My Stand is a long range type that enters the body and take over the brain by fusing with it. It is useless when it comes to combat, but why would it fight when it can make others do the fighting? And the best part is, whatever damage you do to the girl, will not effect me."

Johan cursed himself for being so careless. "So, what is it that you want? You want to make Anne kill me? Dirty move, Hellbender."

Anne, or rather, Under My Skin, looked toward him. "I want to talk and depending on how you respond, I'll decide your fate. I want to reach an understanding."

"Understanding, what understanding," snapped Hop Pop. "You and your gang tried to kill us and take over Newtopia!"

"I wasn't talking to you, peasant!" snapped Anne.

"Hey! No one talks to my Hop Pop like that," Sprig shouted and was about to hit Anne with his slingshot, only to stop and lower it when the Stand made her raise a knife to her throat. Where'd she even get one?!

"That's better. Now," she said, pointing the knife to Johan. "What you did to my boy, self defense. In all honesty, I like my daughter better, even if she did decide to not uphold the family traditions and become a dancer instead of a gangster. Kids. What can you do?" She lowered the knife a little. "But still, one must wonder, why? Why did you do this to me? I've done nothing to you personally and yet, you've attacked my business and killed my son. So, I ask again, why?"

"Well, you were killing people, driving businesses into the ground, corrupted the city guard and..."

Anne held up her hand. "No. You did it because he..." she pointed to a frowning King Andrias. "...ordered it, didn't he? You thought you could use Passione as a loophole."

Johan glanced at the king and asked, "What is he talking about?"

"What I'm talking about is the deal we made: he lets the Bearded Dragons in and not interfere with our operations and he doesn't get anyone killed."

Johan glared at Andrias, who looked away in shame. "Andrias," exclaimed a shocked Marcy. "Why didn't you say anything about this to me? I'm your friend!"

"I didn't know what to say and I didn't want you getting involved. I'm sorry, Marcy."

"It doesn't matter what you say now," said Anne. "The deal is off. My focus is on Passione now. So..." She turned to face Johan. "...here's the new deal. You and your friends and...that girl," he gestured to Marcy, who made an offended sound. "Leave Newtopia and never return and in return, we won't hurt anyone else while we resume our business."

Johan shut his eyes for a second, then opened them as he summoned DARE. "No."

Anne exhaled and shook her head. "Shame." She snapped her fingers and more than a dozen Bearded Dragons tore off their disguises, revealing golden clothes underneath and pulled out their guns. People screamed and ducked for cover as bullets flew everywhere. Marcy hid under Andrias' booth with him.

"Marcy, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean for this to happen."

Marcy put a hand on his hand and patted it. "We'll get through this. We always do. But you still should have told me about this, I would have done something about it with my friends."

"Well, what do we do now?" asked Andrias. He let out a yelp when a bullet whizzed by.

"You and everyone else who isn't fighting have to get out of here and have the guards get rid of the Dragons!"

"But...what about you?"

Marcy took out her die and put it in a Spin. "I'm gonna help JoJo and the Plantars help Anne."

The Plantars used Ripple-infused weapons on the Dragons before they could gang up on Johan, who was currently fighting the possessed Anne. Every time they used their Ripple, the Dragons ended up taking off into the sky like rockets.

"This is the most fun I've ever had in a long while," Polly laughed as she slammed her flail into a female Dragon's face, knocking out her teeth.

"But Anne's still possessed by that Stand," said Sprig after he fired his slingshot at an approaching Dragon with a gun. "And none of us are Stand users! How can we save her!"

"We have to trust JoJo!" said Hop Pop as he used Zoom Punch on a Dragon with a knife. He turned to look at the two human kids clashing with each other. "Please, save her."

Meanwhile, Diego used both his boxing moves as well as his gun on the Dragons. One of them managed to sneak up behind him and grab him by the arms. But Diego managed to grab him by the throat with his tail and squeezed until he passed out. He turned around to see Marcy rushing toward Johan and Anne. Another Dragon attempted to sneak up on him, but he punched him in the face. "Perhaps, this will be the way to find out who will be the one to face me. Whoever can kill Gozaburo."

Marcy caught up with Johan, who wasn't actually putting up much of a fight and was instead dodging Anne's knife. "Anne!" She threw the die with the Spin and knocked the knife.

"Wait! Marcy, don't hurt her!" shouted Johan. "Any attacks we try to inflict on the Stand end up hurting her instead!"

Then Marcy saw something that made her scared: Anne's eyes, nose and ears were starting to leak blood. "What's happening?"

"The more I fuse with your friend's brain," said Under My Skin through Anne. "The more it rots. Soon, she will be a mindless doll and there's nothing you can do to save her."

Johan was at a loss for words. He wanted to hit the Stand so hard, but he couldn't do it without hurting Anne. Then he had an idea, one that he REALLY didn't like, but he had no choice. He approached Anne, summoning DARE. "Did you not hear what I said," she said. "Even the power of a Stand-" DARE lifted the helmet, and there was a flash of light...

"Marcy, are you okay?"

Marcy let out a gasp when she saw Johan. "What was that?! There was a bright light and..." She stopped when she looked around. All the people, citizens and Bearded Dragons alike, were frozen with locks of surprise on their faces. "What did you do to them, JoJo?!" she exclaimed as the Plantars, Andrias, Olivia and Diego came out of hiding.

"The same thing I did to her," Johan said as he gestured to Anne, who was also frozen. "I used my secret weapon on her and Gozaburo's Stand since it fused with her brain."

"Secret weapon?"

DARE reappeared with the helmet back in place. "Remember, DARE has control over the senses. When his helmet is destroyed or is lifted up," explained Johan. "It activates a laser that enhances all five senses at once to superhuman levels, slowing down a person's sense of time to the point that a speeding bullet would look like it's frozen in midair." He turned to look at Anne. "And depending on how close a target is, the greater the effect is. For example, giving how close Anne is, one second will feel like one hundred years."

Marcy gasped. "That's awful."

"Not really. Since Under My Skin is fused with Anne's brain, it got the full brunt of the attack. If we remove it from her brain, she should snap out of it immediately."

"How do we do that?" asked Hop Pop.

"Well, back in Italia, Signor Polnareff once told me how he and a friend of his named Kakyoin were able to save Joseph Joestar from a brain-invading Stand by shrinking their own Stands down to microscopic size and go into his brain."

Sprig gave Johan a confused look. "Stands can do that?"

"Stands are basically life energy given form so they can change in size, no problem." He turned to Olivia. "I'm going to need your help with this."

She made a perplexed look. "My help?"

"I need your Stand to help me remove that parasite."

Olivia summoned Book Of Memories as she said, "But my Stand is not meant for combat."

DARE took the quill as Johan said, "But its quill is as sharp as a knife. It can cut open the Stand and free Anne from it. Okay, wish me luck, everyone." DARE shrunk down until it was no longer visible and zipped into Anne's ear. "Okay, I'm in her blood veins, now I just gotta travel upstream into her brain."

"Wait, you can see what your Stand is doing?" asked Andrias.

"Yes. And I'm approaching the brain right now. Wait. I see it! Guh, it's ugly."

Deep inside Anne's brain, DARE could see Under My Skin. Gozaburo's Stand resembled a humanoid earwig with several tendrils sticking out of its back and into the flesh of Anne's brain. But it did not move, did not speak, it didn't even show any signs that it saw DARE. "As I thought. Since it was fused with the brain, it got the full brunt of DARE's attack," said Johan through DARE. "It doesn't even know where it is right now. Which means..." DARE took the quill and thrusted it into Under My Skin's head.

"It's done," said Johan as he dismissed his Stand. "The Stand has been destroyed. Which means Anne should go back to normal, right about...now."

Anne let out a scream as she clutched her head and fell to her knees. Everyone rushed to her and helped clean the blood off her face. She looked around and asked in a daze, "Did I win? Did I eat the cheerios?"

"If I say yes, will you promise not to freak out?" asked Johan. Anne shook her head. "Then no."

"AAAAAAAAHHHHHH!"

After Johan undid the Superhuman Laser's effects on everyone who got hit with it, the search was on to look for Gozaburo Hellbender. It didn't take long. Diego found his body under the bridge Marcy built. Cause of death, a head wound. With the Hellbender father and son dead, their base of operations destroyed and their source of income gone, the Bearded Dragons were all but done.

But there was something bugging Johan. They never found out who the spy was. Andrias said that it didn't matter anymore since the Dragons were no more. But Johan was not having it, especially when he found out about Andrias' deal with the Dragons. He told him that he was going to have to work hard if he was ever going to earn his trust again.

With all that happened, Andrias was about to declare that the festival will have to be cancelled early, but... "I still want my race," said Deigo defiantly.

"WHAT?!" exclaimed Anne. "After everything that's happened?!" She stopped and groaned as she put an ice bag on her head.

"Think of it this way, it'll be used as a form of morale booster. The hero who saved the day against the champion of Newtopia! I told you before that you have an unusual ability of bringing hope despite your background, Johan Shiobana. I want to see how long that hope lasts." He leaned in a little closer and said softly, "This is not a request."

"Hey, we refuse to-" Whatever Hop Pop was going to say, nobody knew as Diego grabbed him and threw him into an outhouse.

"Hop Pop!" shouted the Plantar kids.

"That's it," shouted Anne. She walked up to Diego and poked a finger in his chest. "You treated my family and friends like garbage for the last time! JoJo! Make sure this prick pays!"

"Normally, I would try to be the peacemaker here," said Marcy. "But she's right! I've not forgiven you for the way you treated her and the Plantars!"

Johan glared at him, then exhaled. "Fine. I concede. Andrias, the race is on!"

"Wonderful!" said Andrias. "Everyone will meet in the arena in an hour!" He leaned in and whispered to Johan. "I want you to teach Captain Diego a lesson. He's been acting like a real prick to me all day. Prick, that is the word humans use, right?"

"I would have used asshole, but yeah. And don't worry, I'll put him in his place. I've got my lucky charm to back me up." Johan patted the salt shaker still in his pocket.
