What was so heroic about abandoning a child to the foster system? To Kotaro Shimura, seeing his mother choose her profession over her progeny forever tarnished his view of both the woman who raised him and the hero industry she pledged her life to.
When he had children of his own, Kotaro didn't forsake them. But he did hold them to an impossible to meet standard. Kotaro refused to brook discussion of a topic his kids were fascinated by, so the Shimura household became fraught with tension. It took Kotaro far too long to see the parallels to his youth.
