Chapter 1

"What do you mean you've signed up for Doctors without Borders!?" Hermione's jaw was hanging open as she spoke to her mother. "Mom, if you do that I'm going to have to switch schools and I'm literally going into my final year of schooling. You can't do this to me!"

Helen Miller looked over her shoulder carrying the coffee pot to the table only shrugging her shoulders as she filled her mug full. The dark brown curls that she'd inherited from her mother were cut short on the older woman, whereas Hermione kept her hair long, nearly to the middle of her back. The only real difference between the two of them was the eye color, with Helen having sage green eyes, but Hermione had gotten her father's brown ones. Helen had always managed to stay in great shape, but after having Hermione right after medical school, she'd always been a bit self focused.

"Look, with your grandparents finally passing away, I'm free to go and follow my dreams. This is what I've always wanted to do when I first started medical school, can't you just be happy for me?" Her mother asked, grabbing the creamer and pouring the mug more than half full with it.

"Be happy for you? You're uprooting my entire life and forcing me to move in with dad and Lily for my final year of school just because you can't be bothered to stay in the country! I could still go to Ilvermorny, I'm a witch for Merlin's sake. Taking a port key to England takes no time at all, it's hardly like being so far away from dad. Please, don't make me switch schools, I'm begging you."

"The answer is no, Hermione. You're sixteen, you're not going to be in a country so far away from any living relatives. Come on, Hector–"

"Harry, mom, Lily's son's name is Harry." Hermione interrupted, because seriously. Dad and Lily had been married for ten years, together thirteen, and her mother still couldn't be bothered to learn her step-brother's name.

Helen only shrugged at the correction, not caring at all that she'd messed up, "anyway, he goes to that boarding school in Scotland for witches. It's perfectly acceptable, and I think it would be good for you to spend more time with your father. You haven't visited him in what four years?"

"Seven, but who's counting. I'll be at boarding school, that's not exactly conducive for that father-daughter bonding you're pushing for." Hermione sat back in her chair, crossing her arms over her chest, leveling her mother with a glare. "Sometimes I think you hate me," Hermione accused her mother, who only waved her off.

"Get packed, I called your dad and he said that Lily will be here with that port thing to collect you and all your belongings tomorrow morning," Helen waved her hand, pushing the short curls out of her face before taking a sip of her coffee. "It'll be a good way to spend the rest of your summer. I fly out in the afternoon, so no delaying, Hermione. Do you understand? Get your stuff together and out the door, because I can't be late just for you to throw a fit."

As her mother rushed from the room, taking a phone call on her way out, Hermione slammed her head against the table, causing the waffles she'd been eating to knock to the ground. Letting out a sigh, Hermione stood up to clean the mess. It wasn't that she didn't want to go visit her father, but with her entering her final year of schooling, the timing for her mother wanting to follow her dreams couldn't have been worse.

She already had internships lined up that she wouldn't be able to do over in Scotland. She had a list of contacts that she'd been carving out for herself for the past two years, and now all that hard work was going to be going to waste. But truly, she should have seen this coming. Helen Miller always did what she wanted, damn the consequences to anyone else.

Hopefully transferring to Hogwarts wouldn't ruin her future prospects as horribly as she feared it would.
