Kurt makes it to safety.

Kurt quickly booked the least expensive room available, after which he inquired about a business center and was directed there. He stopped in the restroom on the way. Once seated at a computer, he logged into his Facebook account and messaged Adam.

—I'm here at the Fireside Inn. Room 222. I'm fine. I'm using a computer in the business center, but I've only paid for 10 minutes. I need to check my options for taking a train back.

He got an immediate reply.

—We've already looked into it. I've set up a rental car that I'm picking up in an hour. Sam's coming with me. There are no trains out of Bangor that will get you back to NYC in time for the show tomorrow night. It's a 10+ hour train ride. And the first one with seats available doesn't leave until 8 am.

—Alright. Thank you.

—Of course. I'm just relieved that you're okay. I've been so worried. We've been out looking for you. We went to that ratty place Jared took you to and to the place you were actually supposed to go. How did you end up in Maine?

—I'll tell you when you get here tomorrow morning. I need to see if I can find anywhere nearby that is open. I still need to eat. The hotel restaurant is closed. The bar across the street is open, but I can't get in here. I'm not 21.

—Alright. Sam says to say that we all missed you tonight and to tell you that Drew won.

—Okay. I'll find out what dessert he wants sometime this weekend. I love you. And Sam too. Thanks for trying to find me.

—Always. I love you too. I'll miss you.

—Me too, even if it's just for one night.

Kurt closed the chat box and pulled up a map of the area. He zoomed in on the casino he had seen when he crossed the street. He saw a McDonald's past the casino, but nothing like a Target or Walmart within walking distance. He decided that he had had enough exercise for several days and closed his session and headed back to the front desk.

"Can I make local calls free from my room?"

"Yes, sir. Is there something I can help you with?"

"Well, I'm starving. I was thinking of ordering a pizza to be delivered here."

"Not a problem." He pulled out a list of restaurants that deliver to the hotel and handed it to Kurt.

"Any of these places will deliver in less than 30 minutes. You can take that with you."

"Perfect." Kurt looked at his name tag. "Thank you, Troy. Very helpful."

"Any time, sir. I hope you enjoy your stay."

He nodded in response and turned. Not bloody likely, he thought as he headed to the stairs. Once he was in his room, he started to look through the list, and the reality of it all hit him like a Mack truck. He walked over to the phone and picked it up and dialed 911.

"911. Is this an emergency?"

"I was kidnapped, but I'm safe now. I'd like to report it to the police."

"Yes, sir. I'll transfer you to an officer."

Kurt took a deep breath and let it out slowly. When the officer picked up the line, Kurt relayed the details of what had happened.

"Do you think you could pinpoint the gas station you ran from?"

"Yes. If someone drove me back to the area."

"We'll send someone out right away. Please be down in the hotel lobby in 10 minutes."

"Yes, sir."

When the line went dead, Kurt said, "So much for dinner."

He went in the bathroom but decided it was best to just stay in the frazzled state he was in. He made sure he had the keycard in his wallet before heading downstairs.

A middle-aged man in a dress shirt and black trousers approached him a few minutes after he sat down. "Are you Kurt Hummel?"

"I am."

"I'm Detective Clements. Let's take this to a private room if that's okay with you."

"Sure."

A few minutes later, they were seated in a small conference room. Using the detective's laptop, and the map Kurt had drawn, it only took them a few minutes to narrow down the potential gas stations in the area.

"Will you ride with me to the three most likely places?"

"Yes, sir." Kurt followed him outside and was grateful to see that he was ushered into the front seat of an unmarked, unremarkable-looking medium blue Kia Forte.

Less than 10 minutes later, they had eliminated the first two possibilities.

As they approached the third one, Kurt said, "This is the place. We were parked at pump seven. Right there."

"Alright. You just wait here—"

Kurt cut him off. "I'm sorry to interrupt, but I'd rather not if that's okay with you."

"Right. My apologies. You can come inside with me."

About 20 minutes later, they left with the name of the towing company that had been called to remove the car from the lot where it had been abandoned after the two men had pushed it to the row of parking spaces in front of the mini-mart when it wouldn't start.

After they pulled off, the detective said, "I'll have to get a warrant to search the car. How do you want to proceed?"

"I don't know what you're asking me specifically."

"Once we get the name or names of your captors, what do you want us to do?"

"Find them and arrest them?"

"Obviously." He chuckled. "Do you have a lawyer? Do you want to come down to the station in the morning and talk to the free counsel available from the prosecutor's office?"

Kurt took a deep breath. "I'm exhausted. I still haven't eaten. I'll just tell you this now. My dad is a U.S. congressman. I'd suggest you just pick the two guys up as quickly and quietly as you can. I'll call him my dad in the morning and get in contact with our lawyer to ask him what to do."

"Right." He pulled out a card and gave it to Kurt. "Just call my direct line on there once you've talked to your lawyer."

"I'll be heading back to New York City tomorrow morning. My opening night in the show I'm in is tomorrow evening. I have to be back in town by tomorrow afternoon. I'll have to call you from there."

"Call me once you're there. I'll update you on what we've found out. "

"Alright. I'll give you my friend Adam's cell phone number. He's on his way here to pick me up. If you need to get in contact with me, you can just call his number for now." He recited Adam's number.

"More than likely we'll coordinate with the NYPD since you were abducted there. Once we find them, they'll be extradited back to New York City."

Kurt was just too tired to process what that would entail. "I'm just going to call it a night and go to sleep without eating. I'm beat. Thanks for your help." Kurt leaned his head back and closed his eyes as the officer continued to drive.

After the officer heard Kurt's stomach growl loudly, he said, "Let me drive you by someplace and pick something up."

"Actually, that would be great. I'll take a chicken salad with honey mustard dressing and a bottle of water from anywhere at this point. I would have gotten something when we were in the gas station, but Slim Jims and Doritos aren't my thing."

He laughed. "Got it. It's not a problem."

After Kurt let himself back into his room, he put the salad down on the dresser and stripped down immediately. He hung his coat up on the rack behind the door, then hung his clothes up as well, but took them into the bathroom with him to attempt to steam the wrinkles out a bit as he took the hottest shower he could tolerate.

Before he got in the tub, he took his sweat-soaked underwear, socks, and undershirt he had been wearing and washed them out in the sink using the bar of soap provided. He used a towel to wring them out, then quickly took them and hung them on an empty hanger that he hooked over the desk chair and put it in front of the heating unit, then turned it up to dry them and warm the room up enough for him to sleep without any pajamas.

He went back into the bathroom and showered, after which he decided to use some of the provided soaking salts and filled the tub to try to relax for a bit. As he leaned back in the tub, he closed his eyes and finally let the tears flow.

He was safe. He would get to see his dad and Carole again. He would be able to continue to pursue his dream, living with Adam in the city of his dreams. He thought about the many interesting places that he had heard about after moving to the city that he wanted to see, as well as the places that had been at the top of his list for years that he had continually put off seeing. He renewed his promise to himself to make time to visit them and add the new places to his list as well.

Once the water cooled down too much to enjoy soaking, he stood and rinsed under the showerhead once again, then got out and dried off. He used the blow dryer so that he wouldn't have to sleep with wet hair. He wrapped a dry towel around his waist and moved the clothes out of the steam-filled room back out to the hanging rack near the door.

He double-checked the door, then crossed the room, pulled the covers back, and collapsed onto the bed. He reached over turned the lamp off, grabbed the remote, and pulled the covers up around his shoulders. He lowered the volume a bit on the TV and searched until he found The Food Network, hoping the background noise would distract him enough to let him fall asleep.
