Dee frowned across his desk at his partner. "You okay?"
"I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be?"
"I dunno, you just seem kinda quiet today. Not that you're usually loud or anythin', but… If there's somethin' on your mind, you know you can always talk to me, right?"
Ryo smiled, although Dee thought he detected a hint of sadness in his lover's dark eyes. "I know that, but it's nothing you need to bother yourself with."
"Aha, so there IS something! I knew it!"
"Later, Dee. We've got work to do, canvassing for witnesses. There's a bad guy to catch."
"Great, we get to spend hours goin' door to door only to have everyone we talk to say they saw nothin', heard nothin', and know nothin'."
"You never know; we might get lucky."
"Don't count on it."
Driving back to the precinct after a fruitless morning, Dee broke the silence.
"Okay, it's later."
"Huh?"
"You said you'd tell me what was botherin' you later. So?"
Ryo sighed. "Today's my mom's birthday. I miss her, that's all."
Reaching out, Dee squeezed his lover's hand. "Yeah, I know how that feels." He'd never stopped missing Jess. "Tell me about her?"
Ryo nodded. "Okay."
