"Your entire case is predicated on an erroneous assumption," the fat-cat lawyer informed the two detectives. "For some unknown reason, you seem to believe that my client was aware of his son-in-law's criminal activities. You are, however, quite mistaken; nothing could be further from the truth. Now, if you gentlemen are done with wasting my client's time, and my own, with baseless accusations, we'll be going. And trust me when I say your superior will be hearing about this. My client has friends in high places."

"Actually, we're not mistaken, although you seem to be," Ryo said mildly. "Are you familiar with the saying 'There's no smoke without fire'? It's true. We happen to have in our possession a number of letters written to the son-in-law, in your client's handwriting, which has been verified by an expert. In them, the criminal activities, as you put it, are discussed in detail. We also have tapes of several conversations between the two of them on the same subjects, recorded by the son-in-law, no doubt for insurance purposes in case his father-in-law should try to double-cross him. So you see, our accusations are far from baseless, and provide ample reason for us to arrest your client on several counts of money laundering, and an additional charge of conspiracy to commit murder."

Dee grinned wolfishly at the lawyer, who suddenly seemed a lot less sure of himself, darting glances at his client, wealthy banker Milton Bertram. "Stick that in your pipe and smoke it."
