Chapter 7
Steve wakes up before the sun has fully come out. He is still worried about Danny. That White was still out there, and he doesn't believe he left the island. What if he realized again that Danny was still alive? Restless, he fidgets around. He actually feels fit. Steve sighs, good yesterday, that almost went wrong. He probably won't get out of here either. Greg is on duty again and watches him with Argus eyes.
Danny, along with Rachel Lynn, returned her car yesterday. His anger at her has faded. Now he's at HQ early putting together his new Camaro. Hopefully it will be delivered soon, because at the latest when Steve got out of the hospital, he had to turn the Silverado back in. His new cell phone was already on his desk and he had organized one for Steve as well. He looks at the clock, it is still quite early, whether he can already look at Steve? He looked quite well again yesterday, but he would still like to check on him. Deciding quickly, he packs up his things, leaves the HQ and drives to Steve's place. Some distance away, a Mercedes also leaves the parking lot.
He has no idea how the guy made it out of his grave. He doesn't even know why he even went back to his house yesterday. One thing he does know is that he still hasn't gotten his revenge. His eyes wander to the passenger seat where his gun lies. Best he makes short process with him like with the two other idiots. He should have done that right away. Well, afterwards one is always smarter.
When Danny gets out of the car it just starts to rain. Quickly he makes that he gets to the hospital. Greg is on duty in the ward.
"Good morning detective, you're early, aren't you? Would you like me to make them a coffee?"
"Good morning Greg, yes, very much so. Is the Commander up yet?"
Greg nods and turns back to the coffee maker. Danny knocks on the door and sticks his head in.
"Good morning Steve! How are you?"
Grumpily, Steve looks at Danny.
"Uh oh, what happened?"
Behind him, Greg enters the room with breakfast.
"He's supposed to stay here for at least another week, and the commander doesn't like that."
Danny grins. Patience has never been Steve's strong point. Friendly, he jostles him, "Come on, you can do it Steve, what's a week?"
Greg put the tray on the nightstand and left the room again. Danny takes one of the coffees from the tray. Steve sighs. He has no choice anyway.
He takes the other coffee and sips it. Then he looks at Danny inquiringly:
"You guys have anything new on White yet?" Danny shakes his head.
"No, he's probably long gone."
Thoughtfully, Steve looks out the window.
"I don't think so. He took a big chance, if he somehow caught on that you got out of the pit, he's going to keep coming after you."
"I don't think so, how would he catch on? It's not like he was on site anymore."
"What if he keeps watching your house?"
"Steve, you're already seeing ghosts. Don't worry so much, he's long gone."
So they talk for a while longer. When Danny next looks at the clock, an hour has already passed.
"Oh, damn it, Steve, I've got to go. I promised Rachel I'd take her out to do some errands." He hands Steve his new cell phone.
"I almost forgot. I'll come back in later, okay?"
Steve nods, but the uneasy feeling remains.
As Danny leaves Steve's room, he almost collides with Lynn. They talk briefly, then Danny continues on his way. He has to hurry, he doesn't want to disappoint Rachel. He ignores the ringing of his cell phone.
Danny is just out the door when Steve's new cell phone rings.
"Steve? Is Danny still with you? Gerry White has his cell phone on, he's outside the hospital. We're ... ."
Without saying anything, Steve jumps out of his bed, yanks open the door to his room and runs right into Lynn, who is about to open the door to the room.
"Sorry," he still calls and continues running, past the astonished Greg, down the stairs through the front door to the outside.
"Danny! Get down!"
Then he already hears the bang and feels a sharp pain in his chest. Surprised, he looks down at himself and at the red spot on his chest that is quickly growing larger. Then his legs sag and it goes dark.
Danny is completely elsewhere with his thoughts. Will Steve break up with Lynn now? He feels a little sorry for Lynn, but that with Catherine is just something special.
He is just through the front door when he suddenly hears a, "Danny! Get down!"
Quick-witted, he immediately drops and draws his gun. At the same moment, he hears a bang. He quickly takes cover behind a cab. He locates the shooter and fires back. Sirens are already approaching, then he sees the HPD and Five-0 team turn the corner. White is surrounded. The latter shoots a few more times, then goes down, hit. Relieved, Danny stands up, turns around and stands frozen.
"Steve." His best friend is on the ground. A red stain on his T-shirt is getting bigger.
