Chapter 11
Greg looks after the woman. Hadn't she just come and gone into the commander's room? Greg has a weird feeling.
Usually, even when patients are in a coma, their friends stay longer.
He goes to Steve in the room. The commander is lying there unchanged. His vital signs are also normal and the breathing tube is in place. He is about to leave the room again when his gaze lingers on the infusion; slightly yellowish streaks are moving in the bag. With three steps he is at the commander and turns the infusion off. Then he calls Dr. Carter.
In the hospital parking lot, they leave their vehicles crisscrossed in the way and run as fast as they can to the ward where Steve is lying.
There they almost collide with Dr. Carter, who is also just rushing to the station and doesn't even greet them. Confused, the officer in front of Steve's door looks at them.
They rush into Steve's room together with the doctor. He is still lying there just as Danny and Catherine left him this morning. Only the infusion bag is on Steve's bedside table and is not hanging on the infusion stand as it should be.
Greg is with Steve and rushes past them with a blood sample.
"Doc? What?" Dr. Carter waves off gruffly, checks Steve's vitals and also the breathing tube, then turns to Five-0.
"The way you just came rushing in here, you probably know that someone is still trying to kill the commander. She was injecting something into the IV bag. Greg noticed the person's behavior and the weird streaks in the IV. He immediately turned off the IV. The commander can't have gotten much of the drug yet, but since I don't know what it is, we have to check if an antidote is necessary. Greg is on his way to the lab with the blood sample. I hope the lab and Greg hurry up."
An anxious few minutes later, the door flies open, almost hitting the wall. Greg rushes to Dr. Carter and says, "Cyanide. There's already a small amount in his system."
"Sodium thiosulfate, 0.5 g as a single dose and 1 g as an IV, quickly."
Greg runs off again and comes back with a syringe and an IV.
"Thanks, Greg."
Dr. Carter accepts the syringe and immediately places it in existing cannula.
Then he attaches the additional infusion. After that is done, he turns to his friends, who have been watching the doctor's every move with a worried look.
"Fortunately, not much of the poison has yet entered the commander's organism, but even a little cyanide can become problematic in his condition, since cyanide can cause tachycardia. This would expose the heart to additional stress, the consequences of which would be devastating. The additional high-dose infusion should counteract that, and we'll monitor him even more closely than before and increase the dose if necessary."
To the unspoken question that is in the room, he replies, "I don't know."
She has just arrived at the parking lot when she sees the Five-0 team's vehicles shooting around the corner. Damn, where did they come from so fast? Her cell phone! She quickly turns it off. It was probably a good thing she hadn't called it in yet. Failure was not appreciated.
Danny is annoyed with himself, how could he have missed that with Lynn. They had so often done things together as a foursome and he had come to know her as a lovely person. What made her want to take Steve's life now? Hopefully the medication Steve is getting is working, he doesn't want to lose his partner.
After Dr. Carter asked them to leave again, Danny stormed out of the room in a rage, and made a spectacle of the policeman in front of the door. He can't really blame the guard at the door. How could he know that the commander's girlfriend wanted to kill him? After all, they themselves had only known for a short time.
Danny turns on his heel and goes once again to the station, confused, his friends look after him. The officer has taken up his position again and looks at him somewhat anxiously. Danny shakes his hand, apologizes, and asks him to keep watching, because Lynn is still out there somewhere.
Chin tried again to locate the cell phone, but it has since been turned off. So they put out an APB on Lynn and drive her to her house. They have also ordered the forensics team there. After a couple of hours, they pull out again. They found several fingerprints and DNA, her work laptop, but nothing more.
Once at HQ, they split up. Chin tries to track the movements of Lynn's cell phones over the last few days, Kono takes on the traffic cameras around the hospital from today, and Danny the videos from the hospital parking lot.
Catherine tries once again to get the shooter to talk. Unsuccessfully.
Disappointed, she hands him over to the agency with the request that all information he provides on the case be made available to them.
The bottom line is they still don't have anything more in hand after evaluating the videos and traffic cameras. Yes, they know Lynn was on the scene. But she doesn't show up on any traffic camera and only briefly in the parking lot. She probably left on foot, her car is still at the hospital. Danny sends HPD to retrieve the car for forensics.
"Guys, I might have something."
When everyone has gathered at the table, Chin slides the motion profile he created via the cell phones onto one of the monitors.
"Besides being at her house, at the gym, or at Steve's, she's been at the harbor a lot in the last few weeks. Always at the same pier. There are rented storage units there.
I have already contacted the landlord. He didn't know their names, but when I described them to him he was able to tell me the number of the unit."
"What are we waiting for?"
It is already getting dark when the team arrives at the port. They had to wait for the court order to search the unit. Now they stand in front of the big gate and Chin opens the padlock with the bolt cutter. Then they push the gate up and turn on the overhead light. There is not much to find.
On the left side is a desk with a docking station for a laptop, a monitor, keyboard and mouse. On the right wall is an old bed, neatly covered, and a few boxes. Against the far wall is a travel toilet, a vanity with a water canister, and a freezer. They open the moving boxes, containing clothes, bed sheets, food, gauze pads, wound compresses and ointments. Apparently someone has been staying here for some time. Expecting to find more food, Danny opens the freezer and drives back, horrified.
