Ryo stepped out onto the precinct's roof, where Dee was lounging against the wall.
"There you are! I've been looking everywhere for you. What're you doing up here?"
Dee brandished a cigarette packet. "Smoke break."
"I thought you were quitting."
"I am, haven't had a smoke in three weeks, but the Chief doesn't need to know that. Long as nobody tells him I quit I can still get away with takin' the occasional break."
"That's a bit sneaky, isn't it?"
"Depends how ya look at it. Sometimes I just need to get some air, clear my head, and bein' a smoker gives me the perfect excuse."
"Even though you're technically an ex-smoker?"
Smirking, Dee shrugged. "I got cigs." He turned the battered packet over in his hand. "One, anyway. I saved the last one, so I'd always have one in case I needed it. Guess you could say I'm tryin' to make it last as long as possible."
"By not smoking it?" The idea had a rather appealingly warped logic to it.
"Exactly! Plus, the longer I go without smokin' it, even havin' it right there to tempt me… I guess I'm kinda testin' my willpower. So far I'm winnin'."
