Tragic Escape

Carefully approaching the door of the maintenance shed Abby paused to listen, she couldn't hear anything but Lev's soft breathing against her shoulder, the soldiers were still out cold, but she knew she needed to be quick, it wouldn't be much longer before they recovered. So with that in mind she cautiously opened the door to the maintenance shed and peeked out, she then crept out, closing the door behind her.

"Lev?" She queried when he gasped.

"S-sorry." He whispered. "I just...it's been so long since I felt the rain."

Abby smiled. "Ah, yeah, I can understand that."

Moving quickly but carefully Abby made it all the way to the first set of crates she had hidden behind on her way to the shed. That was when she finally heard those soldiers waking up, the groans and yawns and she tensed, crouched down and waiting for what they would do once they woke up. She didn't have to wait long as she heard the consternation of the soldiers as they immediately began searching for the source of what had knocked them out.

"Hold on Lev, we need to wait for things to calm down." She whispered.

Lev nodded against her shoulder and waited. Finally, after a short while, things had calmed down enough that they could move again.

So, with that, Abby slipped away from the crates and made her way back through the base before having to stop again when she reached the prison yard, the two guards were back and looking around, joined by a third this time.

'Almost, almost…' She thought to herself.

Finally, she saw her chance and took it, slipping past the guards and soon was working her way down to the cliff where she had set up an extraction point.

"Joel." She said over Codec. "I'm nearly there, I'll make sure Lev and Yara are reunited."

"Good, this went better than expected. Once you're back in the cave and they're safe and reunited I'll walk you through what to do to call Terry in." Joel replied.

Satisfied Abby made her way to the cave she had found and slipped inside. Yara was still seated there, she seemed to have pulled herself together somewhat now that she was out of being exposed to the elements.

"Abby, you made I...Lev?" She began only to gasp in shock when she saw her brother.

"Y-Yara." Lev choked out.

Abby smiled gently before setting Lev down next to Yara. Despite their injuries both siblings held each other close, tears spilling as they had finally found each other again, their torment more or less over. All that remained now was to get to them extracted and taken to a hospital for treatment, especially a way to fix Yara's broken legs and getting Lev the surgery he needed.

Satisfied that they'd be okay together, Abby moved closer to the mouth of the cave and sat on a rock by the entrance, still out of the rain which fell in torrents outside, the storm continuing to rage.

She made contact. "Okay Joel, we're ready. What now?"

"Alright, good job you found that cave, facing away from the base, you won't give yourself away." He replied. "You sure those AA Guns won't be a problem?"

"They won't, I'll be ready to ensure that once Terry's in range."

Joel continued. "Alright, then you may recall that in addition to the tranquillizer guns, you have a beacon with you, set it up at the mouth of the cave and activate it. Terry is already taking off but it'll still be a while before he gets there. Take it easy and try to make sure your rested enough so the extraction will be easy, they're gonna need your help to board the chopper."

"Yeah, I got it." Abby replied. "Just a warning, when I deal with the AA Guns, the base will be on full alert."

"Well, seems it can't be help and you'll be getting out of there anyway, so...no worries." Joel said at last.

Abby nodded and so ended the codec call and, after setting the beacon, sat back, letting out a slow careful breath. She looked back over at Yara and Lev and smiled at the sight of them holding each other, both so relieved they seemed to have, at least momentarily, overcome all their pain. She took a moment to pull herself together, despite being shaken by what she had seen at this camp, she knew she couldn't do anything about it yet. Her focus had to be on getting out of this hell-hole and that was going to be possible soon. Sure enough she could finally hear the sound of the approaching chopper and got ready, nodding to Yara and Lev who also prepared themselves as best they could.

As soon as the chopper was close enough, Terry warning Abby over the radio that the AA Guns were starting to turn towards him, so Abby hit the detonator for the C4 and blew up all four AA Guns, leaving the guards shocked and shouts to echo around the base and soon an alarm was sounding as the chopper came down to hover by the cliff, the side door open and set up for them to climb aboard. Abby quickly picked Yara up, mindful of her legs when, surprisingly, Lev managed to get to his feet himself, albeit shakily.

"I...I can do it." He said firmly.

Abby nodded. "Alright, hurry, they're already on their way down."

So they reached the chopper and Abby put Yara inside, Yara then used her arms to pull herself back and make room while Lev climbed up onto the chopper himself followed by Abby and soon they were on board, just as the gunshots before and a few even began to hit the body of the chopper.

"We need to get out of here, Terry!" Abby yelled.

Terry nodded and got to work on the controls. "Gaining altitude."

They began to take off and move out of range when suddenly they noticed something, a glint on one of the towers in the base.

"Abby!" Terry warned. "Sniper!"

Abby nodded. "I see them."

She quickly grabbed the sniper rifle set up within the chopper and took aim, finally she took the shot. In the split second she did she flinched as she saw the muzzle flash from the sniper themselves, they had fired. But she didn't feel anything.

Quickly lowering the rifle she pulled the door shut and yelled.

"Let's go, let's go!"

Terry began to steer away as they finally escaped the camp. But when Abby turned she froze, Yara was on her back, Lev clutching her, sobbing, the bullet from the other snipers shot had struck home, right in Yara's head, she had died instantly.

"No, no Yara!" Lev sobbed.

Abby shuddered and pulled Lev into her arms.

"I'm sorry Lev, I'm so sorry."

They'd escaped, but at a devastating cost.
