Tis the day I finally move to Stardew Valley, as a farmer I was destined to be. So far, everything has been great…after leaving Aunt Peggy's warming hospitality… (Missing her humble cherry pies already…!) I boarded the rickety bus, bound for Stardew Valley, towing a case packed with every inch of my personal belongings. I stared into my family's heirloom, that stood as the McSopwith's recognition for airborne agriculturalists; My flying helmet and, since I was soon to carry on the torch of my family, I gave it a good patting, pulled it open, and tugged it slowly onto my head. A grin grew on my face as I adjusted my glasses beneath the bounded leather. On went the goggles after, fastened just taught enough, making minute adjustments to the strap to keep it secure.
Looking around, there weren't much other passengers on board and those got off some stops further down the road… then it was only me and the driver rumbling along the rickety and cracked road, winding through the rolling hills and passing lush green forestry. As the cities faded beyond the horizon, the sky transitioned from a murky grey smog to a crystal-clear blue hemisphere, where the sun took every chance to pierce through the gaps in the clouds; Warming the otherwise darkened interior of the shuttle as we neared our destination. I twirled my thumbs in anticipation and boredon, the journal was long and tedious and it would be enough to make me question the authenticity of my destination.
Was it really a false dream? Could I really be led somewhere else…to hopelessness?
Then, the bus engine dies and came to a grinding halt as I heard the driver beckon:
"Stardew Valley, last stop!"
My face smiled at the name and I rose from the tattered seat, gripping the handle of my suitcase, as the gas-powered doors pushed themselves apart. Once I ventured out into the big wide world again, a glaring sunlight casts down upon my greyish face. A cool breeze whispered through the trees with a strong hint of pine, a true comparison versus the stale urban air. I took it all in and made a deep sigh when all of a sudden...
"Hey, Robbie!"
As I looked out in front there was yet another surprise as, standing before me, there where two individuals: One I was unsure of but the other who I recognised in an instant: The tall, yellow and orange clothed woman, with a warm welcoming smile.
"Robin?!" I gasped out. I could see her trademark smile on her face as she opened out her arms. Dumping my bags, I rushed out and flew into her arms, wrapped inside her oak-fumed embrace.
"Boy am I glad to see you here! How was the trip?" She cackled.
Robin, and her family, have been friends ever since with ours. My Pa and her husband have been mates, ever since they were young. She and them would visit to come chat and share gossip from where we were. I had never known that she had found herself living here in Stardew, so to see a familiar face lifted my spirits upon walking into a new world.
"It went well, just I'm so excited to be here!" I sniffed out an answer as we let go.
"Glad to hear... but we got someone here to meet you; This is mayor Lewis, he owns the town." She introduced me to the elder looking man, as he politely touched the rim of his hat and gave me a smile. While he looked middle aged but there's something that made him youthful. Perhaps his personality and spirit of profound wisdom.
"Hello, Robbie and yes, I am Mayor Lewis and I look after the folks in Pelican Town. Robin has been talking all about you and it brought me great pleasure to meet someone new moving into our amazing home.
Come, come, I believe you are here to see what your grandfather had left you." He said and they brought me to this tattered, overgrown region. I scratched my head at the thought of a "private oasis" … yet it looked more like a wilderness than it was a farm.
"Sorry about the mess but your father hardly found the time to cater to it, as much as I wanted him to hand the land over to me. However, he was compelled on not doing that since he believed that there was something keeping him from doing it. Now, we've learned why, especially after what we've heard about what happened to your old farm." Lewis sighed.
"Them Joja folks have always been egging farmers to sell up land or be absorbed into their collective..." The man grumbled.
"Well. even if everything else looks like a wreck, I had to make sure the old farmhouse was rebuilt. It too looked like it was gonna collapse before you got here so I took every effort to make sure it's fully repaired. Don't want the whole thing to come down on ya one night." Robin added.
"Glad ya did, this ol' farm long needed someone to take up the reins and breath new life to it. The soils in good nick too, according to Demetrius after his survey, so I say you still have a good shot of a new chapter in yer life.
Well, I better go and cater to the services of Pelican Town; You have fun with the farmer and, if you need anything, you can come to me… oh and one more thing.
Since you are moving into Stardew, I would love it if you go around and make yourself known to the townsfolk; They've all been itching to see you, after I told them in the town meeting about the new arrival, so don't be afraid to come say hi; I believe visiting the town pub on Friday, would give ya the best chance.
See you around Robbie!" Lewis waved as he strolled back into town.
Robin sighed as I inhaled the country air. It was a change from the choking exhausts of the city, and the smoke of the factories that polluted everything around them. To finally smell that all familiar rural air would be something, I needed to bring back the energy to get this farm underway.
"I'm sorry about your dad though... He was so close to you, who my husband spoke so highly of and believes that you'd have what it takes to bring back the McSopwiths' legacy, that they're best known for.
Here… if you want to have a chat with me, or my family, you are more than welcome to visit; Come spend dinner with us or even ask me if you wish for some more home improvements. I'm sure I can find something to do up this place. Lotta opportunities await, knowin' you got your own land.
I better hail, knowing Demetrius; Always wanting to know where I went. Cya kiddo… and good luck!" Robin smiled as she walked away, leaving me with my new home.
"What have you done… gran-papa…" I sighed.
Heading inside the renewed Farmhouse, the freshly cut wood and restored state of the farmhouse welcomed warmly as I glanced at my new home; A large TV was resting on the floor with a rich blue carpet in front. A warm bumbling red-brick fireplace crackled away and an all-important homemade bed gave the confidence boost needed to know that I won't be crushed during one terrible night.
Robin is a terrific carpenter and her handiwork does show. Though, propped against one of the walls… I noticed some common farming tools left for me in a cardboard box, along with a label.
"Dear Robbie.
Your grandad wanted you to have these. They're not much but they should be enough to keep you going for the week. Spend the Gold wisely… it's the only currency we use around these parts. Wish you luck.
Lewis.
PS. I spent some of my own from the local shop, to give you some starting seeds… sow them to sow your success.
I smiled as I helped myself to the assortment of tools, that'd be essential to the catering of my farm and got to work.
With the gleaming sun bearing down on my land, I huffed and tore away the trees, rocks and weeds to reclaim the lost land, given to the wilderness. It was back breaking work and I understood how to feels to be some farmer tending the fields on foot. The land was small-ish. Not as vast as the great plains, my old farm was known for.
With my hoe, I scraped away the top layer of soil to reveal a darkened patch to plant my crops, before giving them a good drench from my rusted ol' watering can. While it wasn't the greatest of vessels, emptying its small vessel quickly, there was a small pond to ensure that I can keep watering the rest of my first field. Once I have finally got to the end, exhaustion had already crept into my bones, causing them to ache, and sweat began to seep from my exposed arms; Forming patches in the armpits of my white t-shirt.
I knew these clothes wouldn't be suited for the hard-work of farming but, when the sun started to fade. I would not want to visit town, for the time being, as I wanted to get settled into my new home.
Retreating into the house, I sat down on the chair and desk, opening the journal to write my memories that I recorded up to this point. With the fading sun retreating behind the distant hills, the sunlight turned ambient orange, lighting my room with whatever it had left.
I was ready, ready to take on the next day as my old farming garb, the very outfit that I wore on my time out on Hummingbird Plains, hanged on the inside of my front door. It would later serve to be my forever outfit, for my time here in Stardew. As since I couldn't be any more happier here to say the least, and it was about time I get a new fresh start. Something to work on and bring back what I came here for.
As for Blue Betty… it'll be a while until she can move here but, as the farm was too small… crop-dusting would be extremely difficult, giving the vast forestry that surrounded these parts.
Oh… and I am going to christen this new farm 'Dustfield Farm', mainly to blame on my papa's negligence, and that the fields were literally covered in dust.
Ha… farmer humour…
