Now, I never pay much attention to the other lives of the other villagers but there are some points where they do something so drastically different than the everyday rut that it's nearly impossible to avert from.
And that so happened with Alex. When I first met him in the first week of my stay, he was the local Jock; A young man who's primary goals in life was to maintain a healthy lifestyle; Keeping fit with his football outside his grandparents' house, though he tends to annoy George a bit with the way he'd nearly send it through the window.
Though when we did get the time to interact, he'd go on to say that he's all about the fitness, making sure his quotas of push-ups and running are up to par every day.
"Y'know, I think you'd be into this kinda thing. Given how ya used to use them tools to water those crops but, now that ya got that plane… it may look to be a kinda laziness. Not in a rude way, of course but… ya get what I mean?" Alex chimed.
"I think ya don't know what it means to be a Cropduster, Alex. Do ya think I'd have the physical abilities to water entire yards of crops with nothing more than a measly watering can?" I asked with a raised eyebrow.
"I… I s'pose your right… you'd be passed out by the time ya reached halfway in them fields. No sweat huh?" He laughed.
As the days followed, we got to warm up to each other and he began to explain what happened to his parents, and got a lil tender about in the process. I sighed.
"My mom used to love me a lot… though my dad didn't, he didn't like me very much… often slagging me off and thinkin' I'm worthless… I often work up my routines in a bid to try and impress him but I doubt he'd ever come here to the Valley." The jock spoke.
"I kinda felt the same but there were hardly any abuse amongst the McSopwiths. My Pa always smothered me in love and my Ma was always the supportive type, but she became an alcoholic when our farm went under… do I let that cloud my hopes for a future? Nope… I continue doing what I love… and that's to provide a future for the family." I answered.
"Man… that's a heavy mission, I can tell you that but yer right… I honestly can't go chasing a lot of exercise just to impress my dad.
My grandma, she likes to look after the flowers here in Pelican Town… I might go around and help her. Here, it's like you looking after the crops in yer farm and I can work on my biceps while I'm at it! It's a win-win! I think you have helped me secure a future for myself. Thanks Robbie, yer a true pal!" Alex chimed happily… seemingly a new spark reignited his kindling.
Now, it seems he's less willing to part some of his time dedicated solely to body building. Evelyn seems a bit surprised to see her grandson now working tirelessly with her, working the flower beds and making sure they look great for the season.
I sat by one of the benches to overhear their conversations.
"You ok, dear? What's with the sudden change of heart?" She asked him.
"I had a chat with Robbie. I didn't think setting my goals into becoming a world-class athlete would be unattainable if I just constantly work my butt off pumping iron… instead, I think I'd wanna get my hands dirty and help you gran." He hummed.
"Oh, good gracious dear… I appreciate the thought of kindness. You mother was always the florist type. Always selling the best tulips and roses in Pelican Town. Then… when she had you, she had to set those aside just to make sure you were cherished and loved. Not much for your father though… I think he got that from George.
But son… if you're willing to pursue your dreams into sports then don't let any of us stop you. It's your choices in life…" She wisely spoke to him.
"Thanks gran but… I can always go half-in-half. Like Half-time! First half, I'd be pressing benches, the second, I could be raising flowers and growing them to sell on to customers. Pierre often claims that he'd have to pay for flower deliveries to sell his Bouquets. If I hand grow these flowers, then you can decorate the town with them, I can sell them to Pierre and any passing visitors. I'd make a huge difference in this town rather than just chasing around sports all day." Alex hummed.
"If that is what you want, go and chase it."
Upon Evelyn's words, it seems that Alex's choice in life had taken a serious turn. No longer was he playing sports outside all day but he had Robin build him a mini-greenhouse behind his home. Inside, he'd have his different floras growing in little flowerpots as a florist; Selling his work to passing trade… and decorating the town with them.
It all seems to colour Evelyn's life a little more now, smiling upon knowing her grandson had let go of his bitter past to pursue a new lease in life.
Alex the Florist… quite a change.
Though, as night fell upon the end of the day, he joined me by a bench, as I peered up into the night sky.
"I heard about what happened to your father… that really bites to know the loss of your dad… especially from such a horrible event." He went.
"Yeah… but I don't want that to ruin my hopes and dreams in my life." I said as he looked to me with a smile, still wearing that floral print apron stained with soil from a day's work.
"Don't be… you changed my life so I wanted to say thank you for helping me see more to than just press-benching and lifting weights.
Here… I'd want you to have this." He said as he offered me one of those Bouquets.
"A bouquet, for me?" I asked surprised. "You'd want me to-"
"Nah, mate… not in that way. You seem to have a thing for Abigail and the only way to officiate the way of romance is through a bunch of flowers. I grown those myself so give em to Abi to show how much you really love her; She'd appreciate the gesture at least… if she questioned my choice in flowers however." He explained.
So, there's more to this town than just saying that we're in love now.
"Well, I'll be sure to pass this on to her. She'd appreciate it for sure." I smiled again.
"Good… well I guess this is goodnight. Thanks again for everything. Have a good night Robbie." Alex hummed and gets up to head home for bed.
I wandered around town for a while until eventually, I found her… standing by a tree as the rain began to pour. It was like the first time we met… only this time, this'd be our first time we'd ever fall in love for sure.
That haunting flute she played echoed once again between the raindrops as I neared her. She was taken aghast by my sudden appearance.
"Robbie! What are you out here in the rain?"
I sat silent for a moment, a boot nervously creeping to one side as I lowered my head slightly.
"Just… enjoying the weather…" I answered solemnly.
"Me too… I do quite enjoy the solemn ambience… It's kinda peaceful." She smiled. "Here, you're getting soaked again, come stand under the tree."
"It's hard to describe this feeling, watching nature pour out its feelings across the valley…" She described.
"Yeah… I get it too hard… but life has a way to show it…" I added. She turned in my direction in confusion.
"What do you mean by that?"
Hiding behind my back, I took out the bunch of flowers, Alex picked, and presented in front her. I swear I could hear her heart miss a beat as she gasped in awe.
"A Bouquet?! I mean… Robbie… they're beautiful! Where did you get em!" She asked as I gave her it.
"Well… like you said, nature pours its feelings in certain ways." I answered simply. A sweet smile sprawled from cheek to cheek as she tilted her head. "You're really, really are a one in a million… I think I may feel the same way." She hummed happily.
Though I had another trick up my sleeve. Since she had an instrument in her hand, I too took out my grandpa's old guitar.
"A guitar! Jeez, Robbie you're full of surprises. I'm impressed." She gasped in shock. "Well, I was told that life's full of em too. By the way, you wanna play your song together?" I asked. "Gladly… just follow my lead…"She spoke and together we played the remainder of her song by the lake. Romantic charm pulsed from our auras as the song ventured out from the mountains.
For me, it was the start of our proper relationship… and it all started on a rainy day.
