Arriving home hungry just after ten, Ryo decided to fix himself a late dinner, something that wouldn't take too long. Normally he preferred to make meals from scratch, but he always kept the freezer stocked with a few convenience foods. Being a cop meant often having to work irregular hours, and he didn't want to rely on takeout all the time.

There was little effort involved in shoving a frozen pie and fries in the pre-heated oven. He tipped some mixed veg into a saucepan of boiling water, put the lid back on, and checked the timer; he should just have time to change out of his suit and into something more comfortable before the buzzer went off.

Fifteen minutes later, he had his dinner dished up and on a lap tray so he could watch TV while he ate, something he seldom did when Bikky was home, wanting the boy to learn proper manners.

Flicking through the channels, he found an old movie that had only just started, and turned his attention to his food, cutting into the chicken and mushroom pie, then staring at it in consternation. It was empty! All he had was the pastry case; there was no filling, not even a trace!

Well, some dinner that was going to be! Puff pastry, fries, and veggies. Still, it was better than nothing. He started to laugh. Maybe he should investigate the mystery of the missing pie filling; after all, he'd already cracked the case wide open!
