Just My Imagination
Author's Note: Well, hello everybody. Welcome to a brand-new Spidey fanfic of mine! This is like the fourth Spidey fanfic I've made so far, and it's the second time I've done a crossover with him. Obviously, if you're here, you probably read the description of the story and saw it was an Avengers crossover. Though, more specifically, a Spider-ManXBlackWidow fanfic. I have no idea why I'm doing this to myself since I really DON'T need to worry about updating another fanfic, but… When an idea pops in my head, you just gotta write about it. All my fellow fanfic writers know what I'm talking about when I say that, lol.
Anyway, just to go into detail about the setting, this is my own created universe. However, my universe will also take inspiration from the MCU, the Marvel's Avengers Game, and the comics. So, to put it simply, this will be a combination of a lot of things, and there will be some fun little references throughout the story that all my Marvel nerds will be able to catch.
Oh, one more thing before we begin! Peter will be 23 years old in this, much like his Spidey PS4 counterpart. Natasha will be 25 years old. Okay, that seems to cover everything, so let's begin!
Intro Music: The Avengers - Theme Song
Chapter 1: Concern
Oh crap, is it time for me to narrate?
BGM: John Parr – ST. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion)
Hey, everybody. Peter Parker here, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. I guess this is the part where I tell you guys all about the Avengers. Well, the Avengers are known all around the world at this point. Wherever they go, whether if they're in a battle, or if they were just normally seen in a particular area, it's like these guys are rockstars. Rockstars all in their prime, too.
If there was another comparison to describe the straight up hype around The Avengers, imagine living in the same time period with the Beatles when Beatlemania was in full effect. Yep, it's that crazy, but hey, there's a reason why they have so many fans.
The guy behind the entire thing is Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Iconic eye patch, loves to call people MF's, and has an extra set of super suits just in case the situation calls for it.
Hold on! How come I'm not the narrator when I'm the director?!
Fury, just let me narrate this! There's no need to yell at me!
Now, as for the team Nick Fury put together…
First guy you wanna mention? Probably Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man. Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist. He's the one who relishes the spotlight the most.
You got that right, kid.
Tony, this is my narration, please get out!
Anyway… the second guy? Well, that would be no one other than Steve Rogers, AKA Captain America. Legendary war hero. Understander of references.
I understood that reference.
I'm sure you did, Cap.
Moving on. Third? Dr. Bruce Banner, The Hulk. Scientist when he's not angry, super strong when he is angry.
Oh, come on! You can come up with a better description than that!
Bruce, I'm trying my best here!
Okay. Fourth? Thor. God of Thunder, son of Odin. The one who is worthy.
I am indeed worthy.
Glad you know this, Thor.
Fifth? Clint Barton, Hawkeye. Best bow and arrow dude in the world. Nobody's better than him at that.
Can't argue with that.
I know you can't, Clint.
Sixth? Natasha Romanoff, The Black Widow. Greatest spy on the planet. Dangerously beautiful.
Appreciate you, Spidey.
Aw shucks, stop it! You're makin' me blush, Nat!
And last but certainly not least, the seventh member. This would be no one other than me! Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man! Although… I'm only the seventh member on some occasions. While Nick Fury gave me the opportunity to be an Avenger full-time, I respectfully turned it down.
Most of the time, I want to only represent my title. You know, the whole friendly neighborhood thing. I wouldn't be able to do that if I was always with the Avengers. I elect to stay near the streets of New York, often being a man of the people.
However, every now and then, I would go on missions with them. In fact, I just recently went on a mission with Tony and Natasha. Out of all the Avengers, I'm the closest with these two. Don't tell the others, please.
Ever since I was a kid, I admired Tony's mind. Both of us being science freaks helped us form a connection rather quickly. We may not always see eye to eye, but the respect we have for each other can't be denied.
And then there's Natasha…
Okay, okay. Truth be told, I may have a crush on her.
Alright, scratch that. I do have a crush on her. And it has nothing to do with the fact she kinda looks like my ex Mary Jane. Even though both of them are redheads… and I do have a thing for redheads… Oh God, where am I going with this right now?
Anywaaaayyy…! Uh, yeah. Natasha is awesome. Like, in general. Not just appearance wise, but she's a really cool person. We've become good friends over the years. I don't think she was the biggest fan of my jokes when I first joined the Avengers, but eventually, that good ol' Spidey and Parker charm made her get used to my antics. It was only a matter of time. I do have the best jokes.
But still, that's all we are. Just good friends. I've never said anything because… Well, what if she doesn't feel the same way about me? I know, I know, you're probably rolling your eyes right now, but it's the truth. I don't want things to become awkward between us if she doesn't feel the same way. It's a legitimate excuse!
*Sigh*
S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier
After Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Black Widow completed their mission, they went back to the Helicarrier, which is the main form of transportation for all S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. The Helicarrier was on its way to pick up Cap, Hulk, Thor, and Hawkeye since the four of them went on a separate mission. During this time, the trio of superheroes decided it would be best to go to their rooms and get some rest.
Tony and Natasha were sleeping just fine.
But as for Spider-Man?
Well… he was having some issues.
More specifically, a nightmare or a vision of some kind.
Nightmare/Vision
BGM: Avengers: Infinity War – Even For You by Alan Silvestri
Peter Parker could be seen in a never-ending dark abyss. He frantically looked around, wondering where he was, and why this was happening to him. Though, as soon as he analyzed all he could in this abyss, that's when the whole setting changed.
Not only would the setting change, because quite frankly, he still had no idea where he was, but he started to suddenly feel sad.
"Let me go…"
Peter's eyes widened, knowing who that voice belonged to. It was Natasha's voice. "Natasha?!" he shouted, looking in every direction to see where she was.
In mere moments, Natasha's body would appear right in front of Peter, appearing to look lifeless on the ground and being in a pool of blood. "NATASHA!" Peter yelled, immediately running full speed towards her body, kneeling to where she was and grabbed her hand.
"No… No, please no." Peter muttered, feeling like her hand was becoming cold.
"It's okay…" Natasha managed to say, as it was clearly hard for her to speak. Her eyes were struggling to stay open, but she kept a smile on her face for her friend.
Unfortunately… she would only be able to hold on for so long.
Natasha's eyes shut, her body becoming completely limp as Peter could only watch all of this happen, feeling absolutely worthless since he couldn't save her. Tears were starting to stream down his face, as they started to drop on Natasha's lifeless body. He would emit a painful, frustrated, and powerful yell from his vocals. It was a cry for help. A cry for her to come back. A cry that he's had many times before with others who were extremely close to him.
It doesn't matter if he is Spider-Man.
No matter what he does, no matter how hard he tries…
The ones he loves…
Will always be the ones who pay.
End of Nightmare/Vision
Peter woke up in a cold sweat, screaming loudly which would probably wake everyone up. He started to breathe heavily, as he replayed the events in his mind over and over again. That felt way too real.
With his adrenaline running high, he shot up out his bed, running out his room. The first person he saw was Tony, who had exited his own room to find out what the heck was going on. "Jesus, Pete, what the heck are you doi-"
Tony wouldn't be able to finish, as Peter would cut him off.
"Where's Natasha?!" Peter shouted, not being in the mood to go back and forth with Tony right now.
Tony tilted his head and raised his eyebrow in confusion. He thought the answer was obvious. "Uh, her room?" he pointed out. "What's going on?"
Peter wouldn't even reply to Tony's question, instantly running towards Natasha's room and started to knock on her door repeatedly. "Natasha! Open the door! Natasha!"
Well, if Natasha wasn't awake a few moments ago, then she certainly was awake now.
She already heard Peter's yelling, but now since he was banging on her door while also telling her to open it, this was something she couldn't simply ignore.
The door would open, revealing that Natasha was alive. Everything was intact. Her long red hair, green eyes, and pretty face were full of life. "Peter, what are you-?"
"Are you okay?!" Peter asked, cutting Natasha off. Once she heard the question, she was taken back by it.
"Am I okay?" she repeated, being unsure why he would ask that question. In fact, by the way Peter was looking, you would think he just went through something traumatizing.
And, uh, he pretty much did go through something like that.
"Of course I'm okay. Why wouldn't I be?" replied Natasha, continuing to analyze Peter. He was sweating like crazy, his eyes were completely wide, and he was constantly freaking out.
Honestly, it didn't take long for Natasha to connect the dots, because she's unfortunately been through this many times as well due to her rough past. She knew he went through a nightmare, no doubt about it.
"It's… It's just… You were…" Peter said, not realizing what he revealed. When he said 'you were,' that pretty much confirmed whatever he dreamed about, it was indeed about Natasha.
Tony would come near Peter and start to pat him on the back, sighing heavily. "Alright. We've all had a long, long day. Come on, Pete, let's get ya back to sleep so you can stop shouting at us." he told him, changing directions. Tony would lead Peter back to his room, leaving Natasha by herself.
She would look at both Peter and Tony walking away, being quiet.
However, she already made it up in her mind that she wasn't done with this situation.
Some time later…
Peter was in his room again, but he wouldn't be able to go back to sleep. He still couldn't get that nightmare out of his head, no matter how hard he tried. He was sitting on his bed, continuing to be deep in thought.
Then, he would hear a knock on his door.
"Hey, Pete. It's Natasha." she said, causing Peter to stare at his door in silence.
Oh great, she came to scold him for interrupting her beauty sleep.
At least, that's what Peter thought.
Natasha sighed, figuring she needed to say something else since Peter had no response. "I'm not here to yell at you, if that's what you're wondering." she assured him, her tone taking on more of a soft one. "I mainly want to check up on you."
After hearing Natasha's explanation, Peter would still be silent for a bit. But eventually, he would give in. Walking towards his door, he would open it, letting Natasha in.
Peter would quietly sit back down on his bed, as Natasha would lean against the wall with her arms crossed. She would get straight to the point.
"So, what did you dream about?" she asked casually, making Peter's eyes widen. He had no idea how she would take it. Repeating the events out loud is hard enough, and it was evident he didn't really want to talk about it.
BGM: Aaliyah – I Care 4 U
Seeing the struggle Peter was going through, Natasha walked over to where Peter was, sitting right beside him on his bed. At this point, Peter was avoiding eye contact with her, but it was clear Natasha wasn't giving up anytime soon.
"It's okay. You can tell me." she told him, wanting to be there for her friend. "Besides, I'm not leaving until you tell me anyway." she slightly joked.
A small smile formed on Peter's face, and it had everything to do with Natasha's persistence in helping him. It showed she truly cared for him.
With a deep breath, Peter would try his best to get through this.
"I… I had a nightmare." Peter confirmed, pausing for a moment. "I had a nightmare about you dying."
Once he said this, Natasha's eyes widened. She died in his nightmare?
Peter would soon continue. "I have no idea why I dreamed about you dying, but everything… everything felt so real. I felt so helpless. All I could do was watch while my friend died right in front of me." he explained, looking at the floor. "Unfortunately, I'm no stranger to that feeling. All of it started to hit me afterwards, and I guess that's why I'm like this right now."
The hardest part about being a hero, is that you can't always save everybody.
Peter realizes this. He's been Spider-Man long enough to know this fact, but it didn't make it any less painful to go through.
Hearing what he had to say, Natasha had a sympathetic look on her face. She knew what Peter was talking about when he said he was no stranger to that feeling.
Quite frankly, Natasha isn't a stranger to it either.
It's one of the reasons why they were able to relate to each other.
"Hey," Natasha said, following it up with, "Look at me."
To Natasha's request, Peter's head would slowly move and look at her, finally giving the woman some eye contact. "I'm not dying anytime soon." she assured him, showing a small smile. "I care for you too much to let that happen."
Whether or not Natasha would be able to tell, Peter had the slightest hints of red appear on his cheeks, signaling that he was blushing.
Natasha would soon add this as well. "I also know what you're going through. I still have nightmares about people that I've lost. People that I really cared about. It doesn't get any easier to deal with, but the best thing we can do is to let their memories live on through us."
As she said this, Peter would give an agreeing nod. This is what he's been trying to do ever since his Uncle Ben died. He's been trying to live up to his uncle's iconic words of, 'with great power, comes great responsibility.'
It gets difficult to live up to those words sometimes, but… Peter hopes Uncle Ben is looking down on him. He hopes he's making him proud.
"Thanks, Nancy Rushman." Peter replied, joking a bit which signaled his mood has improved due to Natasha being there for him.
Natasha rolled her eyes, but in a playful manner. "You see, there you go ruining everything again. You know how long ago that happened?"
Peter snickered. "Doesn't matter how long ago it was. I'll never let you live it down."
"Ugh." Natasha replied, being slightly annoyed and embarrassed. Let's just say that she and Spidey shared some special times together when Natasha once thought she was a completely different person.
Flashback
"Nancy Rushman and you might have something very special and beautiful."
"But you're not her."
"And my feelings aren't hers. I'm sorry."
"Yeah… me too."
End of Flashback
Natasha would get up, thinking that her job was done and was about to walk out of Peter's room.
"Hey, Nat." Peter said, now standing up. This caused Natasha to stop dead in her tracks and turn around, wondering what he wanted to say.
"Hm?" she replied.
Then, what would happen afterwards would catch her completely off guard.
Peter would hug Natasha, making the redheaded spy frozen for a good minute. Her eyes went wide, as now a small blush could be seen appearing on her face. "Seriously, thanks for checking up on me. It means more to me than you really know." Peter told her.
Hearing those words, Natasha couldn't help to be slightly touched at Peter's thankfulness, even if her body was still stiff at the moment.
But she couldn't stay stiff forever. She would eventually loosen up for her friend and return the hug.
And honestly? The hug… actually felt nice.
"You're welcome." she responded, as the hug would soon end. A smirk would then appear on her face. "Oh, we should be picking up Clint, Bruce, Thor, and Cap soon. Thor suggested that we should all take turns in trying to lift up his hammer as a game tonight."
Peter shook his head. "I feel like the only reason he's doing this is to watch our misery in trying to pick up his hammer while proceeding to say we're not worthy."
Natasha laughed. "Probably, but hey, just imagine his face if somebody did pick it up. Can't hurt to try."
Peter would give a laugh of his own, shrugging a bit. "I guess you're right."
END OF CHAPTER 1: CONCERN
BGM: Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes End Credits Theme
Thor: I'm ready to tell you all that you are not worthy.
Steve: Are you sure about that?
Natasha: Could've sworn I saw the hammer wiggle for a second.
Bruce: I see this as an absolute win!
Next time on Just My Imagination!
Who's Worthy?
Peter: Alright, I guess I'll try.
