Chapter 8: Time Travel Mishaps
While Kairi had taken the Quinjet to Twilight Town to find Sora, the rest of the team back on Earth had their hands full with their own mission - trying to figure out a way to undo the devastation caused by Thanos' snap. Steve, Nat, Scott, and Bruce had tried to convince Tony Stark to help them with the time travel plan, but he had chosen to step away from the hero's life and enjoy a peaceful existence with Pepper and their daughter, Morgan. Though disappointed, they understood his decision and respected his desire to leave the past behind.
Instead, they turned to Bruce Banner, who had now fully embraced his Smart Hulk persona. Time travel was not his area of expertise, but Nat's encouraging words convinced him to lend a hand. Together, they returned to the Avengers HQ to delve deeper into the time travel theory and make use of the Quantum Tunnel that still resided in the back of Scott's unassuming brown van.
In the sleek and modernized workshop room of the new Avengers HQ, the four of them gathered around the Quantum Tunnel. Scott, ever the tech genius, had been working tirelessly to keep it operational, while Bruce used his scientific knowledge to analyze its potential. Nat and Steve stood by, supporting their friends and offering their insights whenever needed.
The atmosphere was filled with anticipation and determination, knowing that they held the fate of the universe in their hands. They had seen the devastating effects of the snap firsthand, and they were willing to do whatever it took to make things right again.
As they worked, they discussed the complexities of time travel, the potential dangers, and the moral implications of altering the past. But they knew they had to try. It was a daunting task, but they were united in their mission and had each other's backs.
***TEST DAY - AVENGERS HQ***
In the sleek and modernized workshop room of the new Avengers HQ, Bruce Banner was fiddling with buttons on a panel while Scott Lang stood in front of his van, donning his Ant-Man costume. The back of the van was open, revealing the Quantum Tunnel, a device that held the key to their time-traveling mission. Nat and Steve stood nearby, anxiously waiting for the test to begin.
"Okay, here we go," Bruce announced, his voice tinged with a mix of excitement and apprehension. "Time travel test number one. Scott, fire up the uhhh... the van thing."
Scott followed Bruce's instructions and opened the portal to the Quantum Tunnel, revealing a swirling vortex of energy. Nat and Steve exchanged glances, concern evident in their eyes, as Bruce continued with his preparations.
"Breakers are set, emergency generators are on standby," Steve confirmed, making sure everything was in order.
"Good. 'Cause if we blow the grid, I don't wanna lose Tiny here in the 1950's," Bruce joked, causing Scott, Nat, and Steve to give him a panicked look.
"Excuse me?" Scott questioned, clearly taken aback by the suggestion.
"He's kidding," Nat reassured Scott in a hushed tone, shooting Bruce a disapproving look. "You can't say things like that!"
"Just... It was a bad joke," Bruce muttered sheepishly, realizing that humor was perhaps not the best approach in this situation.
"You were kidding, right?" Nat asked, seeking confirmation.
Whispering back to Nat, Bruce replied, "I have no idea. We're talking about time travel here. Either it's all a joke, or none of it is."
Interrupting the hushed conversation, Bruce addressed Scott with more confidence. "We're good! Get your helmet on, Scott. I'm gonna send you back a week, let you walk around for an hour, then bring you back in 10 seconds. Makes sense?"
Scott scratched his head, trying to wrap his mind around the plan. "Perfectly not confusing," he quipped, trying to keep the mood light despite the weight of their task.
With everyone ready and the Quantum Tunnel active, the time-traveling test was about to begin. The room was filled with a mixture of tension and anticipation, as they all understood the gravity of what they were attempting.
In a world where time itself was malleable, nothing was certain. But they had come this far, and they were determined to make it work. As Scott prepared to step into the Quantum Tunnel, the heroes held their breath, knowing that their next move could change everything
In the midst of their time-travel test preparations, the Avengers were surprised by the sudden entrance of Kairi, followed closely by Axel, Silver, and an unfamiliar face – Sora. Steve, Nat, and Smart Hulk approached Sora with warm smiles, relieved to see him back.
"We are back!" Kairi said with glee. "Guess who has returned!"
As the Avengers gathered around Sora, their emotions were palpable. Steve's eyes glistened with tears of joy as he grasped Sora's hand, unable to contain his relief.
"Sora, it's been too long," he said, his voice cracking with emotion. "We thought we lost you."
Natasha stepped forward and hugged Sora tightly, her stoic facade momentarily crumbling as she whispered, "You have no idea how worried we were. We missed you."
"I've missed you too Cap, Nat." Sora said with joy in his voice. It had been years since he teamed with The Avengers to stop Ultron in Sokovia. He was happy to see his friends once again.
"We need you more than ever now." Nat said, still holding Sora in a warm hug.
Sora returned their affection with a warm smile, touched by their genuine concern. "I'm here now," he reassured them. "And I've been brought up to speed thanks to Kairi and Steve's memoirs."
Steve beamed with pride at the mention of his memoirs, which had become a record of their adventures and a way to remember those they had lost. "They've been my way of keeping everyone's stories alive," he explained.
Natasha chuckled, a playful glint in her eye. "And a source of entertainment for the rest of us," she added.
Sora laughed softly, grateful for the lighthearted moment amidst the heavy burden they all carried. He turned to Bruce, who was still adjusting to his new Smart Hulk person.
"Good to see you again, Bruce," he said with a friendly grin.
"Been too long Sora, great to see you back." Bruce said, as looked at his returning friend.
"Kairi tells me, you're Professor Smart Hulk now?" Sora asked with a mix of surprise and curiosity.
Smart Hulk chuckled, his deep voice a stark contrast to the scientist he once was. "Yeah, it's a long story. Over 12 months in the gamma lab, putting the brain and brawn together. Best of both worlds."
Scott Lang, who had been listening intently, approached Sora with a wide grin. "So, you're Sora," he said with excitement.
Sora nodded, amused by Scott's enthusiasm. "That's right. Nice to meet you, Ant-Man."
Scott extended his hand for a handshake. "You can call me Scott," he said.
As the introductions continued, Axel playfully cleared his throat. "Ahem, no warm reception for your good old friend Axel?" he said with a smirk, feigning hurt feelings.
Nat rolled her eyes playfully. "Oh, come on, Axel. You know we love having you around," she quipped, earning a chuckle from Sora and a mischievous grin from Axel.
"Yeah, you're like the friend who never leaves our minds," Sora added with a grin, causing everyone to burst into laughter.
Axel playfully shot a finger gun at Sora. "You know it," he replied, his usual fiery demeanor softened by the warmth of his friends' company.
"And this is Silver," Axel said, introducing the mysterious silver hedgehog. "He's from the future and here to help fix his timeline, which Thanos wrecked."
With the attention now on the enigmatic Silver, Steve stepped forward to extend a welcoming hand.
"Nice to meet you, Silver. You're from the future, huh? Time travel certainly brings some unexpected surprises," he remarked, half-jokingly.
Silver nodded, his golden eyes locking with Steve's. "Yes, I've come from a future that's been ravaged by darkness. I'm here to do whatever it takes to set things right," he replied, his voice resolute with determination.
Still fascinated by the presence of a time traveler, Smart Hulk approached Silver with scientific curiosity. "How are you able to navigate through different timelines without causing any disruptions?" he inquired, genuinely intrigued.
"Also, do we still need the Quantum Realm and the van, if Silver is here?" Asked Nat, looking at Bruce and her new ally, Silver for answers.
Silver shook his head. "Not exactly. I can't perform time travel on my own. My abilities are limited to psychokinesis" he explained. "I just want to fix my world and time, which Thanos has thrown into chaos. Darkness has plagued your futures, my home."
Scott couldn't help but marvel at the talking hedgehog. "That's a talking hedgehog," he whispered to Steve, who chuckled in response.
"We have friends from Mobius who are all talking animals, Scott." Steve said, chuckling at Scott's incredulous expression.
Silver turned his attention to Steve and asked, "Wait, you know Sonic?"
Steve nodded, his eyes reflecting fond memories. "Yes, Sonic and his friends on Mobius are Earth's allies. We've crossed paths a few times, and they've helped us out in some tight spots," he explained. "How do you know Sonic?"
Silver's silver quills twitched with amusement. "Oh, I've bumped into Sonic a few times during my adventures, whether it's me in the past or him in the future. Time travel can lead to some interesting encounters," he replied with a mysterious glint in his eyes.
Sora, ever curious, asked, "Who is Sonic?"
Kairi smiled and happily explained, "Sonic is a super-fast, blue hedgehog from Mobius. He's a hero who fights against the forces of evil, just like us. He's brave, adventurous, and always ready to lend a hand to those in need."
Scott, still trying to wrap his head around the idea of talking animals, interjected, "So, let me get this straight. There's a super-fast blue hedgehog from another world who fights evil, and he's friends with Captain America?"
Steve chuckled at Scott's summary. "That's about right," he said with a nod. "In this line of work, you get used to the unexpected."
Silver's expression turned serious again as he looked around at his new allies. "It seems we're all tied together in ways we never could have imagined," he said. "Perhaps it's fate that brought us here, to this moment, to confront the darkness together."
Kairi placed a comforting hand on Silver's shoulder. "Whatever the reason, we're glad to have you with us," she said with a warm smile. "We'll face this challenge together, and we'll make things right."
As the group stood together, united by their shared purpose and newfound friendships, the possibilities of what they could achieve together seemed boundless. From talking hedgehogs to time-traveling heroes, their journey was filled with wonder, excitement, and the hope that they could bring light back to a universe shrouded in darkness.
Axel, still puzzled, looked at the van and asked, "Guys, I love reunions, but there is one thing that's bothering me." Puzzled Axel, deep in thought.
"What's that?" Asked Sora, looking at his fiery friend.
"Why is there a brown ugly ass van in here?"
Scott gave a look of disdain to that comment, it was his baby and memories of his fallen friends. The van brought back happy times and his last adventure with Hope, before she got dusted in the snap.
Bruce stepped forward and explained, "We were about to test out time travel through the Quantum Realm, using the back of Scott's van as a makeshift time machine."
"Quantum what?" Axel asked, clearly perplexed.
Scott took over the explanation, walking back towards the van. "The Quantum Realm is a place where time and space work differently. I was trapped in there for about 18 months after the snap, but to me, it was only about two hours in that time."
Sora, Axel, and Silver exchanged surprised glances at the revelation. Kairi smiled knowingly, understanding the significance of Scott's experience.
"Scott's appearance here has given us the chance to test time travel," Kairi explained. "We can go back in time and retrieve the Infinity Stones from the past, before they were destroyed."
Axel's eyes widened, realizing the immense potential of this opportunity. "So, we can undo the snap?" he asked, hope and determination gleaming in his eyes.
Steve nodded. "That's the plan," he replied. "We need to test this theory out first."
As the Quantum Tunnel hummed with energy, Sora couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and hesitation. Time travel had gotten him into hot water before with the TVA, so he couldn't shake off a sense of caution. Silver, on the other hand, was eager to put their plan to the test.
"Let's do this," Silver said, his determination shining through.
Scott nodded, activating his helmet and ready to shrink down to Ant-Man size. As he stepped into the Quantum Tunnel, Steve offered him words of encouragement.
"Good luck, Scott. We know you've got this."
Scott grinned back, feeling a sense of pride. "I won't let you down, Captain America," he replied confidently.
Bruce pressed a button on the control panel, and the Quantum Tunnel flared to life. The van hummed with energy, and everyone watched with anticipation as Scott vanished into the swirling vortex.
A few moments later, the Quantum Tunnel shimmered, and someone in an Ant-Man suit emerged from it. To everyone's surprise, it wasn't Scott Lang.
Sora blinked in confusion, not expecting to see someone so young. "Who... who are you?" he asked, voicing everyone's curiosity.
As the strange and unpredictable time travel mishaps unfolded, the group watched in disbelief and confusion. A teen version of Scott Lang emerged from the Quantum Tunnel, expressing his discomfort with the situation. As the others tried to make sense of what was happening, the unexpected appearance of an old man in the Ant-Man suit only added to the chaos.
"Is that Scott?" Kairi asked, trying to make sense of the situation.
Teen Scott confirmed it, but before they could process this bizarre turn of events, he was sucked back into the Quantum Tunnel. The confusion escalated when an old man in the Ant-Man suit stumbled out next, seemingly in pain.
"Ow! My back!" the old Scott exclaimed.
"What is going on?" Silver questioned, looking concerned.
Bruce, in a panic, tried to figure out how to control the Quantum Tunnel to bring Scott back. The tension in the room grew as they anxiously waited for a resolution.
As the old Scott was about to get sucked back into the Quantum Tunnel, Axel and Kairi expressed their concern.
"Can you bring him back?" Axel pleaded.
But the surprises weren't over yet. As Bruce fiddled with the controls, another figure appeared before them, this time in the form of a baby in the Ant-Man suit.
"It's a baby," Steve deadpanned.
Bruce, undeterred, insisted, "It's Scott"
"Yeah, as a baby!" Steve said in disbelief
"He'll grow." Quipped Bruce, trying to bring light to the situation.
Sora couldn't believe his eyes. "Bring Scott back!" he urged, his concern for his friend evident.
Bruce motioned to Natasha, giving her instructions on how to stop the experiment.
"When I say kill the power, kill the power," he told her.
Natasha wasted no time, rapidly walking over to the generator, ready to shut it down at Bruce's command. The heroes all watched anxiously as the tension built up.
"And... Kill it!" Bruce finally called out.
Natasha quickly pulled down a lever, and with a surge of power, everything came to a halt. The Quantum Tunnel deactivated, and Scott, the normal Scott, was spewed back out again. He stumbled, looking disoriented, but otherwise unharmed.
The group let out a collective sigh of relief. "Scott, are you okay?" Steve asked, rushing to his friend's side.
The unexpected turn of events left Scott Lang in a rather embarrassing and confusing situation.
"Somebody peed my pants," Scott awkwardly admitted, causing the others to react with a mix of amusement and discomfort.
Axel couldn't help but blurt out, "TMI!" clearly not wanting to know the details of Scott's mishap.
"Oh thank god," Nat muttered, glad that everyone was safe despite the chaotic experiment.
Scott, still trying to make sense of what had happened, pondered out loud, "But I don't know if it was 'baby' me or 'old' me... Or just 'me' me."
Bruce, ever the scientist, raised his hands in a dramatic manner and declared, "Time travel!" as if that was the only explanation needed for the bewildering situation they had just witnessed.
As Steve, Sora, Kairi, and Silver shook their heads in disbelief, they decided it was best to walk away and give the others some space to deal with the aftermath of the time travel mishap.
"What? I... I see this as an absolute win!" Bruce exclaimed, trying to remain positive despite the unexpected complications.
The group dispersed, leaving Bruce to sort out the Quantum Tunnel's settings and for Scott to find a clean pair of pants. They knew they needed to be more careful and precise with their next attempt at time travel. But despite the setback, they were determined to make it work. The fate of the universe depended on their success, and they were ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
***OUTSIDE THE AVENGER'S COMPOUND***
Sora, Silver, Kairi, Axel, and Steve took a seat outside the Compound, their minds still reeling from the unexpected time travel mishap. The group found themselves on a secluded bench just outside the Avengers Compound, surrounded by the serene beauty of nature. The sun cast a warm glow, gently illuminating the scene as they all tried to process the whirlwind of events that had just unfolded.
Sora couldn't help but let out a nervous laugh, "Well, that was certainly... something. I never thought I'd see someone turn into a baby or an old man."
"Yeah, time travel can be a bit... unpredictable," Steve replied with a small smile, trying to ease the tension.
Silver furrowed his brow, "In my timeline, we have advanced technology, but time travel through the Quantum Realm is something I thought we would encounter."
Kairi placed a comforting hand on Silver's shoulder, "Don't worry. We'll figure this out together."
Axel leaned back on the bench, still trying to wrap his head around what they had just witnessed. "And to think we're supposed to be saving the universe, it's last hope. Time travel just adds a whole new layer of complications."
Before Steve could respond, the sight of an unexpected visitor caught their attention. It was Tony pushing a pushchair with the young Morgan inside. He made his way toward them, with a slight smirk on his face.
"Well, well - sitting on the job, huh?" Tony's trademark sarcasm was in full swing.
Steve couldn't help but smile, glad to see his old friend Tony again. "Tony, it's good to see you. And we're not depressed, just dealing with some... unexpected challenges," Steve replied.
"Well I did tell you so, Cap." Tony quipped, looking towards his comrade.
Tony's playful expression shifted to one of sincerity as he looked at Sora.
"Long time no see, kid. Thought you dusted away like the rest of them," he said, his voice tinged with a hint of sadness.
Sora grinned, shaking his head. "Can't get rid of me that easily. I always find a way back," he replied, glancing at Kairi with a smile.
Tony chuckled and then glanced curiously at Silver. "So, why did Sonic dye his fur silver? Trying out a new look?" he asked, completely unaware of Silver's true identity.
Kairi giggled and corrected him, "Oh, Tony, this is Silver. He's actually from the future, not another version of Sonic. He's here to help us fix the timeline."
Tony raised an eyebrow in surprise. "From the future, huh? The concept of time travel really is all the rage these days, isn't it?" he said, half-jokingly.
Steve, always the one to keep things focused, asked, "But why are you really here, Tony?"
Tony's playful demeanor shifted slightly as he replied, "Oh, just taking a stroll with my girl," he said, patting Morgan's head affectionately.
Kairi smiled at the sight, "She's adorable, Tony. She must keep you busy."
Tony nodded, "She sure does. But I'm also here to tell you that I was right, for the 1000th time."
Steve raised an eyebrow, "Right about what exactly?"
Tony grinned, "About how complicated and unpredictable it is. And how it can mess with your head."
"Well, you're not wrong," Steve admitted with a chuckle.
As they continued their conversation, Tony's presence brought a sense of lightheartedness to the group, a much-needed break from the seriousness of their mission. He had a way of lightening the mood, even in the face of darkness and uncertainty.
"So, why the long faces team?" Tony asked, seeing everyone a bit down in the dumps. "Let me guess, Bruce's machine turned Scott into a baby?"
"Among other things, yeah." Kairi replied, the weight of frustration in her voice.
"Not to mention, Lang peed himself." Axel quipped, finding it amusing but dangerous at the same time.
"What do you think went wrong, Tony?" Asked Sora, looking towards the genius inventor.
Tony explained the failings from the time test, a mix of amusement and concern on his face.
"That's the EPR Paradox. Instead of pushing Lang through time, you might've wound up pushing time through Lang. It's tricky. Dangerous. Somebody should've cautioned you against it," Tony said with a smirk.
Steve chimed in, "You did."
"Oh, did I?" Tony replied, acting as if he had no recollection of it, much to everyone's amusement. "Thank God I'm here. Regardless, I fixed it," he added.
Tony reached into his trouser pocket and pulled out something. He held it up in his right hand to reveal a device with a knowing grin.
Sora couldn't help but ask, "What's that, Tony?"
Tony proudly explained, "This, my spikey haired hero, is a fully functioning Time-Space GPS. I just want peace," he said, making a peace sign with his fingers.
Axel looked impressed, "So wait, you created time travel?"
Tony chuckled, "Not create it, more like stabilized it... but yeah, some inventing was involved, I guess."
Kairi was astounded, "Tony, this changes everything!"
Tony shrugged with a hint of modesty, "Hey, I can't take all the credit, FRIDAY rendered it for me."
Steve interjected, "That's incredible, Tony."
Silver, always curious, asked, "So, how does it work?"
Tony's eyes lit up with excitement as he delved into the technical explanation, "It makes traveling through time safer and more predictable, not allowing time to flow through oneself, but time to change around us. The Time-Space GPS ensures that we have complete control over our journey through time, minimizing any potential side effects or paradoxes."
As he spoke, Tony's genius and passion for invention were evident. The heroes couldn't help but be in awe of his brilliance. With Tony's new invention in their hands, they felt more confident in their mission to fix the timeline and defeat the darkness that threatened their universe
"We got a shot at getting these stones, but I gotta tell you my priorities: Bring back what we lost? I hope so. Keep what I got? I have to, at all costs. And... maybe not die trying will be nice." Tony said with vigor and a sense of justice. His conditions were reasonable, bring back everyone who dusted, but not change what has occurred in the last 18 had just made a new life with Pepper and bringing up his Daughter, he got his second chance after Thanos - he couldn't lose it.
Tony's conditions were clear, and Steve understood the weight of the task at hand. As they shook hands, Steve nodded with determination, "Sounds like a deal."
"To make this work, we are going to need the team. We are getting the whole team, yeah?" Tony asked, his eyes scanning the group.
"We're working on that right now," Steve replied confidently. He knew that bringing together the entire team would be no easy feat, but they had faced impossible odds before and had come out victorious. They would find a way to assemble everyone they needed for this crucial mission.
Axel couldn't resist chiming in, "Better start making those calls then, Cap. We've got a lot of friends to rally." He smirked, knowing that gathering everyone would be quite the adventure in itself.
Kairi agreed, "Yes, we need to reach out to Aqua, Riku, and Goofy. And don't forget about Sonic, Rocket, Nebula, and Carol. They're all valuable allies, and their strength and skills will be essential in our fight against the darkness."
"You're right. We'll need all the help we can get." Steve said, as he took a deep breath, steeling himself for the challenges ahead. "We need to be at our best if we're going to pull this off."
With renewed determination, the group began making plans to prepare for their time-travel mission with a sense of camaraderie and purpose filled the air. They knew that their mission was risky, but they also knew that they were fighting for something greater than themselves. They were fighting to bring back the ones they had lost, to protect their world, and to ensure that darkness would never triumph over light.
With their minds set and their hearts united, the Avengers and their new allies were ready to face the challenges of time travel, to confront the darkness that threatened their universe, and to make the ultimate sacrifice if necessary.
Their journey through time would be filled with twists and turns, danger and adventure, but they were prepared to face it all. Together, they would prove that even in the face of the most impossible odds, they could stand as Earth's mightiest heroes and bring hope to a universe in need.
