A.N. Welcome to Chapter Black! I'm beyond excited for this part of the story. Along with the Dark Tournament, Chapter Black is one of my all-time favourite anime arcs. And if you thought the Dark Tournament was intense, this book will turn the stakes up to eleven. You might not think so with the first couple of chapters, but it's definitely the calm before the storm. Hold on tight. There's a reason the rating's been bumped up to M for this one!

A quick reminder, in case you were unaware. The Golden Seal has been adapted as a bonus chapter for Book 1. I also rewrote what I felt was the weakest chapter in the Spirit Detective saga, so go check it out if you haven't already!

Sarah: Kurama is pretty much the greatest. I wish he really existed, along with a few other anime boys. You will definitely see more of the battle between him and Yoko ;)

DCDGojira: Thanks! I'm so glad you loved the preview and the Golden Seal!

Ghost of Magic: It was a joy to write the Golden Seal! I honestly wish there was more YYH content coming out. More OVAs, a reboot, a continuation, anything. For now, we'll have to make do.

Hina714: I'm pumped too. I've been sitting on all these ideas for ages. To finally get them out is an indescribable feeling. And yes, it starts before Poltergeist Report. I can promise that.

Wolfs Child: Here it is! I'm so excited!

Sakura-chan: Thankyou so much, and your patience is finally rewarded.

NightWolfRUNNER: Hope you're awake for the launch of Book 3. I can only pray I live up to expectations. I love all my readers dearly. They keep me going.

bluerose921: Thankyou! It's so surreal to know I'm done with studying and stepping into a whole new world of possibilities. I did take time for myself, and will continue to do so now that I can. Keep an eye on Hiei and Sakura. I love writing their rather odd friendship, and their connection will be very important going forward.

I truly appreciate your understanding with my short hiatus. I feel much more refreshed and ready to tackle the complexities of this book. I'm thrilled that you are continuing the journey with me and Sakura. It's a new book, so make sure you follow/favourite, and PLEASE leave a review!

I don't own YYH, just my OCs.

Chapter 1

The door opened with a click, and Sakura saw her familiar bedroom once more. It was exactly as she'd left it, except for a fine layer of dust beginning to form on the surface of her desk.

Her bag dropped to the ground with a soft thud, and she trailed her fingers along her quilt before curling up on it and breathing a sigh of relief.

I'm home.

There had been many times in the tournament where she thought she'd never return here. Sakura closed her eyes and allowed herself to take in the reality that she was in her room, lying on her own bed that she would sleep in tonight. Granted, there would certainly be nightmares, and waking up in a cold sweat while screaming was all but guaranteed. Still, it was a welcome change from an island of bloodthirsty demons.

The main downside? Kurama wasn't there. That was something she hadn't considered about coming back. He'd been around constantly during the whole tournament, and now they'd had to go to their own houses. Saying goodbye after getting off the boat was horrific, even if it was just temporary…

Kurama kissed her forehead. "It won't be long, my love," he whispered. "I'll see you very, very soon,"

Sakura nodded and kept her eyes downward. Maybe he wouldn't notice how she was holding back tears. He didn't want to walk away from her either. She could tell from the longing in his eyes. But he had to.

"I'll be ok," Sakura managed to say. "You should spend time with your mother. I'm sure she's missed you,"

Kurama nodded. "When were you planning to go and see Genkai?"

"Day after tomorrow, probably," Sakura shrugged. "I haven't completely decided yet. Depends on how I'm feeling in the morning. Plus, I haven't told Yusuke, and I don't know if he'll want to come,"

"I'm coming with you, regardless," Kurama smiled. "Yusuke probably won't want to be a third wheel,"

Sakura laughed. "How well do you know him?"

"Will you call me tonight?" Kurama stroked his hand up and down her back. "I want to hear your voice before bed,"

She nodded. "Of course,"

"I love you," he murmured, leaning in to give her a final kiss.

Then, with obvious effort, Kurama forced himself to walk away.

The island had been like their own little bubble, isolated from the outside world. And after waking up beside him only that morning, her bed felt so cold and empty.

With a soft groan, Sakura started massaging her temples.

Get over it. She told herself sternly. Kurama has a life. He needs to see his mother. He can't stay with me twenty-four seven.

But she wanted him to. She wanted to be with him every moment. Now that they were together, now that they were back, what reason was there not to be?

For one thing, school. Reality was quick to remind Sakura. Didn't really consider that, did we?

She still had another year at Sarayashiki Junior, whereas Kurama was at Meiou, one of the most prestigious high schools in the city. Another barrier to spending time with him. If Sakura was to ever show up there, she doubted the other students at Meiou would take kindly to her presence.

There was no question that girls would be crushing on Kurama, or rather Shuichi, by the dozens. And if they found out he was dating someone like her, a lowly middle school student from Sarayashiki… the thought of their reactions made her shudder.

No, she couldn't dwell on that. She couldn't lie here on her bed staring into space, either. This wasn't Hanging Neck Island.

Get up, Sakura. Be productive. It's homework time.

Sakura forced herself to stand. The duster was in its usual spot by her bookshelf, and she used it to wipe her desk off before sitting down and pulling out the essay she still needed to finish writing.

There were a few days left of school break, and if she was going to see Genkai, her homework needed to be completed. This was the year she'd have to start making decisions about the future. High school entrance exams and such.

Sakura's stomach quivered. Would she be able to get into a decent high school with her grades alone? It seemed unlikely. And what did she even want to do with her life after school? She and Yusuke were nearly fifteen, and it wasn't like they had anyone to look to in terms of career role models…

Mr Iwamoto's cruel words floated into her mind. "You'll snap sooner or later, I know it. And you'll end up whoring yourself out like your tramp mother,"

Teeth gritted, Sakura's pen hit the paper, ready to write.

We'll see about that, Iwamoto! I'll get full marks on this essay, just like last time, and every time before.

Yusuke's gaming console blared to life next door. Sakura recognised the theme music to his favourite fighting game, and she smiled.

Atsuko was out on one of her escapades, Sakura was stationed in her room, studying at her desk while Yusuke goofed off with video games.

Yes, things were definitely getting back to normal around here.

"Shuichi, dear. It's so good to see you," Shiori's face lit up at the sight of her beloved son. "Did you have a nice time on that study retreat?"

Kurama enfolded his mother in his arms. "Yes, Mother. It's good to see you too. How was your day?"

"Busy," Shiori's smile was tired, but her eyes had an impish, knowing look. "Kazuya had to stay back late, so he won't be joining us for dinner,"

"I understand," Kurama smiled back. "So it's you, me and Kokoda tonight. I'll just put my things down, and then I'll come help you in the kitchen,"

"Don't be silly," Shiori shook her head. "You just got back. Nobody's cooking tonight. We'll order in. What sounds good to you?"

Kurama thought for a moment. "I should ask Kokoda first," he said, and headed upstairs to the bedrooms.

Shiori's fiancé had only recently moved in with his younger son, Kokoda. Secretly, Kurama had been almost glad to leave the house for the tournament. After years of it just being him and his mother, having two more people around was jarring to say the least.

Kurama dropped his bag off in his own room, but could hear his soon-to-be stepbrother engrossed in a familiar video game down the hall.

He walked towards the sound and chuckled to himself while opening the door. Kokoda's back was facing him, and didn't even seem to realise someone else had entered the room.

"I see someone's been commandeering Goblin City while I've been gone," Kurama said pointedly.

Kokoda jumped about a foot in the air. "Shuichi!" he gasped. "I… I didn't even hear you,"

"It's fine, Kokoda," Kurama smiled. "I see you've almost beaten the game. Impressive,"

"Actually, I've been stuck on the Master Quiz for days now," Kokoda almost pouted. "It's getting annoying,"

Kurama laughed. "In any case, Mother is planning to order in for dinner. I came to see if you had any requests,"

Kokoda's eyes widened. "Pizza," he said promptly.

"Naturally," Kurama sighed, and went back downstairs to the kitchen. Asking the younger boy had been entirely pointless, but he needed a moment alone, away from his mother's knowing gaze.

Had she guessed that someone else had taken up residence in his heart? If not, she would soon. He was anxious to introduce Sakura to them all, once things had settled down a bit. Maybe after returning from Genkai's.

Shiori was already on the phone and midway through the pizza order when he walked in. She knew Kokoda's vote as well.

Kurama sat down at the table with a glass of water and drank with his eyes shut while his mind whirred at top speed.

Sakura.

It had only been a few hours, but he couldn't stop thinking of his flower, and couldn't stop worrying about her. She had appeared to be alright on the journey back, but not twenty-four hours previously, she'd been running around the forest in a panicked state. There was no way she would be fully recovered in such a short period of time.

Even with Yusuke to protect her, Sakura was still so vulnerable.

Kurama refilled the glass. He'd just wanted to stay with her, but now that they were off the island and out of danger, she'd insisted that he needed to see his mother. Maybe so, but at the cost of leaving his hana? It felt wrong.

Kurama folded his arms and took a breath. Surely Sakura was back at her home by now. Would the twins' mother be there to greet them after such an absence? Unlikely, given what the Shadow Cage had shown him. They'd probably returned to an empty apartment, while he was being lavished with matriarchal warmth and love.

The difference in their living situations made his chest ache.

Sakura. You deserve so much better than you've had.

As much as he loved his mother, Kurama wished he had returned home to find Sakura waiting for him instead. He longed for her presence. So badly. His arms felt empty without her in them.

It was necessary, but any separation from his beloved was unacceptable. And in light of how he was feeling, perhaps he would have to think about another solution…

"Shuichi? Shuichi?!"

Kurama jumped slightly. Shiori's hand brushed the hair from his forehead, checking his temperature. "Are you feeling alright, dear?"

"Yes, Mother. I'm perfectly fine," he tried to smile reassuringly.

Shiori frowned, then a lightbulb seemed to go off in her head, and that impish grin returned. "So, who is she?"

Her son looked shocked. "How did you know?"

"Call it a mother's intuition," Shiori chuckled. She sat down next to him. "That faraway look in your eyes can only mean one thing. You've found a special girl, haven't you? When are you bringing her over?"

Shuichi's delighted yet shy smile both confirmed Shiori's suspicion, and warmed her heart further. Had he ever been this happy? Not to her recollection.

"I have, Mother," Shuichi's eyes sparkled. "And words cannot do her justice…"

Sakura dropped the pen and sighed. The last sentence was complete. It was all done. Now, to think about dinner…

"Hey Squirt, I'm heading to the arcade. You want to come?" Yusuke stuck his head around Sakura's door without so much as a knock.

"Figures. Only you would want to go to the arcade after hours on your console," Sakura glared at him. "And no thanks. At least one of us should be here when Mother gets home,"

Yusuke rolled his eyes. "That should be sometime next week, if we're lucky," he snorted. "You saw her note,"

The twins had arrived home to see the usual array of empty glass bottles strewn across the table, and a cheerful memo from Atsuko saying she was going out for a bit. Naturally, Yusuke and Sakura had exchanged a silent look, knowing that was code for God-knows-how-long.

Sakura stretched and stood up. "Before you go running off, let me just check a few things," She walked off to the kitchen and opened the fridge. Bare, just as she'd suspected.

Yusuke appeared at her shoulder with a sigh. "You want to order in or something?"

"Maybe… but first, tell me something," Sakura shut the fridge. "How much homework did you do while we were away?"

Her brother jumped back rather defensively. "Say what?" he spat, looking revolted. "We were fighting for our lives, and you think I had a chance to do homework?!"

"It's called time management, bro," Sakura smirked. "Guess that means we're not eating out. I'll go shopping now while you get to work,"

"Not a chance, you damn brat!" Yusuke almost shouted. "I just won the Dark Tournament. There's no way in hell I'm sitting around worrying about science class!"

He whirled around and headed for the door. "See ya, I'm going to the arcade!"

Dumbass. He forgets so quickly. "Spirit Snare!"

The magenta ring snapped Yusuke's arms to his side, and telekinesis yanked him back onto the sofa.

Sakura stood over him with her arms folded. "You're not going anywhere until you're done,"

Yusuke gritted his teeth. "Damn brat…"

"How about a deal?" his sister replied calmly. "You finish your homework, and I'll make whatever you want for dinner tonight,"

"Ugh… ok, fine! Now let me loose!"

With a giggle, Sakura released him. "So what'll it be?"

Yusuke thought for a second. "Pancakes,"

"Pancakes? For dinner? Sure, why not," Sakura grinned. "Now get writing, and I'll throw in some grilled beef too!"

Grumbling, Yusuke stalked back to his room. Sakura waited a few minutes to ensure he was working before heading down the street with a calico bag. Within twenty minutes, she'd bought the ingredients and was back in the kitchen, cooking up dinner.

"Yusuke?" Sakura called when she'd finished setting their food on the table. "Dinner's ready. Come get it!"

He appeared in a flash. "That looks great, Kura,"

She grinned. "Don't wait, get stuck in!"

Yusuke began devouring the meal like a man possessed. Sakura was slower, more deliberate, and felt foolishly proud of her cooking. Her grilled beef dish had nothing on Mr Yukimura's, but at least it would make Yusuke happy. They both needed it, after the tournament.

Once they'd eaten, she would tell him about Genkai's request.

"There's a task that must be done, Missy. You might call it your very own Spirit Trial,"

A Spirit Trial. Sakura's stomach dropped unexpectedly, and she started pushing the food around her plate. What did Genkai need to tell her?

"Kura? You ok?" Yusuke looked up at her anxiously.

She attempted to smile. Might as well fill him in. "Yeah, but I should tell you now. Genkai said she needs my help with something, so I'll be going up there in the next day or so,"

Yusuke nearly choked. "Grandma asked for your help? What's going on?"

"I don't know," Sakura admitted. "All she said was that it's important,"

"But we won the tournament," Yusuke frowned. "Toguro's gone. They all are. What else could there possibly be?"

Sakura forced herself to eat another mouthful before answering. "I guess I'll find out, won't I?"

The twins were silent for a moment. Neither of them knew what to say.

"You're not going alone, are you?" Yusuke unstuck his throat.

Sakura shook her head. "Kurama said he'll come, so I'll have him there,"

"You want me to come too?" Yusuke asked. "It could be dangerous,"

"You can, but Genkai might put you to work," Sakura grinned.

Her brother almost retched. "Actually, I'm sure you'll be fine with Fox Boy and Grandma," he said with an exaggerated smile. "It's like you said, I have homework to do!"

"Overkill, Yusuke," Sakura sighed. "Guess there's no point dragging it out. I'll head up tomorrow. Hopefully it won't take too long, whatever it is,"

Sakura put her plate aside and stood up. "Pancakes are in the fridge. I have to make a phone call,"

She walked into the living room, picked up the handset and began dialling Kurama's number.

Itsuki looked up from his seat and smiled. In front of him was the tall, imposing silhouette of Sensui. But someone else had entered the room behind him.

"He's regenerating in the tank, sir," Scarface muttered. "However, I cannot say how long it will take for him to regain his body,"

Sensui sat down and gazed out the window. "That's fine, my boy. All in good time,"

"Sensui," Itsuki's voice was soft, yet pleased. "I see you've brought our first recruit,"

"Indeed," Sensui replied. "It seems we were not alone in our goals. He is most eager to assist,"

Scarface didn't make a sound, or eye contact for that matter. Itsuki pushed back his teal hair to get a better look at the boy, and was instantly intrigued.

"What is your name, young man?" he asked.

Scarface looked down. "I have not used my real name for many years. Mr Sensui says I will regain my identity in time. For now, you may call me Hisuru,"

Itsuki surveyed the boy. A very muscular apparition, with scruffy brown hair, bright blue eyes and a huge burn scar on his face. But what mainly fascinated Itsuki was the boy's energy waves. His strength and ki level was impressive, though not on the same level as him and Sensui. Not only that, the boy radiated with anger, grief, vengeance, confusion, and an insatiable thirst for answers. He would make a fine addition to the team.

"Excellent," Itsuki gave a small nod of approval.

Sensui turned to his new employee. "Toguro's tales of the new Spirit Detective are most illuminating. I wonder if you could also help to shed more light on this Yusuke Urameshi,"

The boy leaned forward eagerly. "I'd be happy to, Mr Sensui. There is much you do not know about the Spirit Detective, and his sister,"

Dinner was over, and Kurama had retired to the living room couch with a book. It was the best place to keep an eye on the phone. If he went up to his bedroom he might miss Sakura's call.

Right on cue, the landline started ringing. He knew it was her before he even answered.

"Kurama?" Sakura's voice was soft and hesitant. She must've been worried about someone other than him picking up.

"Yes, my love," he smiled. "It's me. How are you feeling?"

She paused. "I'm alright. But I just wanted to let you know that I've decided to go to Genkai's tomorrow,"

"A day earlier than planned. Is there any particular reason?"

Sakura fingered the phone cord. "If I drag it out, I'll just get more nervous," she said quietly. "Besides, I have some questions for her. About Master Shin, you know?"

Kurama smiled. "That makes sense. I'm guessing you've informed Yusuke?"

"Yes, however he insists on staying behind to complete his homework,"

Kurama laughed. "Are you sure it's really Yusuke, and not an imposter?"

Sakura chuckled. "Oh no, I hadn't thought about that. Maybe it is. You should come and save me,"

"Maybe I should. I miss you," Kurama sighed.

"Me too," Sakura pressed the phone tighter to her ear as if that would reduce the distance between them. "I completely understand if this change of plans means you can't come,"

"Don't be silly," Kurama smiled. "Of course I'll come,"

"No really, it's fine," Sakura insisted. "No need to change your plans on my account. I can go by myself,"

He paused for a moment. "You are my first priority, Kura," he said gently. "Wherever you go, I want to be with you,"

Another pause. He could hear Sakura debating with herself.

"Are you sure? We only just got back, and I don't want to ruin time with your mother,"

"You're doing nothing of the kind," Kurama assured her. "She's working tomorrow, and I wouldn't see her til evening anyway,"

"Oh yes, work. That thing parents are supposed to do," Sakura said rather ruefully.

Kurama hesitated. "Kura… was your mother there when you arrived home?"

More silence while Sakura wrestled her emotions into submission. "You know, I've got this splitting headache, and I better quit procrastinating and take something for it," she said quickly. "And if we're going to Genkai's, I should really start cleaning the apartment before I turn in for the night. Meet you at the train station tomorrow?"

Kurama gritted his teeth. It was just as he'd suspected. After everything they'd been through, the twins had been left to their own devices by that irresponsible mother.

Several emotions engulfed him. Anger. Frustration. An overwhelming sense of protectiveness.

If only you could know how priceless you are, my love.

He wanted nothing more than to sweep into Sakura's apartment and whisk her away, somewhere she couldn't be hurt anymore.

"Kurama?" Sakura's voice was worried. "Kurama, did you hear me?"

Kurama composed himself. "Yes, Kura. I heard you. But I'm happy to come collect you from your apartment,"

"It's out of the way," Sakura reminded him. "No need to inconvenience yourself,"

Even through the phone, she could feel his frown. "How many times must I tell you, my love?" he said softly. "You are anything but an inconvenience to me,"

"I'll… see you when you arrive tomorrow then," she whispered. "Now I should really get going,"

"Are you sure you'll be alright, my love?" Kurama asked.

Sakura sucked in a deep breath. "I'll be fine, promise. Goodnight. I love you,"

"And I love you, my precious flower," Affection saturated his voice. "Sleep well. I'll see you soon,"

Somehow, they both managed to hang up at the same time.

Sensui listened to Scarface's explanation of the Dark Tournament without any comment. But as soon as the boy was finished regaling the story, a smile spread across his face.

"Spirit Detective Yusuke Urameshi," Sensui purred. "If what you say is true, I do believe my long wait is over,"

Itsuki smiled. "Mr Sensui, the time is right. All signs are pointing towards success. We can begin,"

Sensui stood up and gazed out the window. "Itsuki, have you found a suitable location yet?"

"I believe I have discovered the perfect site. There is an intricate cave system on the outskirts. More than enough room for the epicentre. We should begin work as soon as possible,"

Sensui smirked. "Well done, Itsuki. At last, the trial can commence,"

There were a few more steps to take. He turned his eyes to the scarred boy who was eagerly awaiting instructions.

"I know you seek many answers, Hisuru," Sensui began. "And I promise, they are coming. But first, there is a task you must complete. The first step to reclaiming yourself,"

"Anything, Mr Sensui," Scarface said earnestly. "What do you require of me?"

Kurama took his hand off the phone and glanced at the empty space beside him. Even though Sakura had never set foot in his house, it felt so empty without her warmth.

He wished Sakura was on the couch, legs tucked up with her lovely head in his lap while he read. But, he wanted more than that.

He wanted to feel Sakura's beautiful body underneath him while they kissed. He wanted to run his hands through her hair and trace her lips with his tongue. He wanted to go upstairs to his room and find her waiting there for him. Better yet, he wanted to take her to the bedroom they shared. Their bedroom. He wanted to fall asleep with her in his arms, and wake up next to her when the sun rose again. He wanted to make her smile, make her laugh, make her happy, and show her how very precious she was.

He just wanted to be with Sakura, for every possible minute.

"Shuichi, are you sure you're feeling well?" Shiori asked from the doorway. Her brow was creased with worry.

"Yes, Mother," Kurama sighed. "It's Sakura I'm concerned for,"

Even if she had insisted that she would be fine, he was worried about whether she would be able to sleep tonight without him. Her nightmares would surely return with a vengeance.

Shiori joined her son on the couch. "How so?"

"It's… complicated, Mother," he said quietly, reluctantly. "And quite a delicate situation. Suffice it to say, Sakura's upbringing has been vastly different to mine. Neglect, abuse… she deserves so much better,"

He closed his eyes, as if fighting back tears. "But I'm not sure how she would feel about me revealing many details to you. Forgive me,"

Shiori took her son's hand. "Not to worry, I understand," she said gently. "I can see how much Sakura means to you, dear. I'll listen if you need to talk more about this,"

"Thank you, Mother," he smiled. "But I believe I should go to bed now. I'll be seeing Kura tomorrow, after all,"

They bade goodnight and Kurama headed upstairs to his spotless bedroom. He quickly changed and slipped into bed, only to realise he'd never fall asleep while worrying about his flower. If she were here, all would be well.

Kurama shut his eyes briefly, then opened them and imagined seeing her lovely face on the pillow. The thought made him ache with desire. If only imagination would become reality.

Kura, my hana. I would give anything to be sleeping beside you tonight.

Sakura undid the braid and watched her black hair tumbling over her shoulders. It eased the pressure on her skull. She hadn't been lying on the phone; her head really was aching slightly but there was no Tylenol left thanks to Atsuko. While combing her hair out, she resigned herself to an uncomfortable night.

Nothing to do except sleep it off.

She turned off her light and got into bed while staring at the ceiling. The images from the Dark Tournament were flashing across her mind like photographs.

Well, at least she was getting a preview of her nightmares. Better than a blind screening.

Sakura rolled over and hugged her pillow. Even if Yusuke was in the room next door, she felt alone, and so very vulnerable.

I wish you were here, Kurama.

She closed her eyes, then instantly snapped them open as a picture of Scarface seared across her vision. His frantic pleading to die with Sakyo… those clouded, tormented eyes with the fear of a child…

Such a mystery. Throughout the tournament, Scarface had only made a few cryptic remarks regarding his past, and identity.

"My past is… complicated, Miss Urameshi," … "Not that it's any of your concern, but you can't help being loyal to one who saves you from a fate worse than death," … "Allow me to die with my master. I'm begging you! I don't have anyone else!"

Sakura shivered and hugged her pillow tighter.

Who was he? I never even learned his name.

It seemed as if she'd never know. But she had meant what she said when telling Kurama to spare him. She'd seen the mad desperation inside those blue orbs. She'd felt the lack of control. It might not make any sense to her, but Sakura was confident in her assessment.

From his enigmatic hints to the fierce protectiveness of that psychotic crime lord, she was sure Scarface had spent his life under the control of something terrible. Something even she didn't understand.

Sakura had not forgiven him for his actions, and she didn't know if she ever would. But the tiniest drop of pity had mixed with her fear and dislike.

Whatever happened in his life must've destroyed him. Her eyes began to get heavy. I hope he found some comfort in the end at least.

Sakura's fingers closed around the Hiruseki pendant. It calmed her slightly.

Remember what Yukina said. I'll find a way forward, somehow. Starting tomorrow, at Genkai's estate.

Within a few minutes, Sakura drifted off to sleep. But she would not rest peacefully for long.

Kurama bolted upright in bed, breathing heavily. He wiped the sweat from his brow and looked at the clock beside his bed. It was just after one in the morning.

Sakura!

He forced himself to settle down, and thought about what he'd just seen in his mind.

Sakura, standing on the edge of a great chasm, reaching out to something he couldn't see.

"Don't go!" She was begging over and over. The panic and grief she felt had been so overwhelming that he'd jolted awake.

Why had he dreamed of her so vividly? Did she need him?

Kura?

No luck. Either she was still sleeping, or unable to respond due to the distance. The twin's apartment was on the other side of the city, after all.

Kurama got out of bed quickly and began to dress. The late hour didn't matter. The fact that he was seeing her tomorrow didn't matter. It also didn't matter if this was Yoko's influence talking, and frankly he couldn't care less if Yusuke approved of his impromptu visit or not. He needed to know for certain that she was safe.

I'm coming, Kura.

Yusuke yawned, rubbed his eyes and glanced at the clock. It was nearly two in the morning, and his eyes were protesting.

He switched off the console and headed out to the kitchen for a glass of water. The house was eerily quiet. Sakura must've gone to bed hours ago, and he hadn't heard any sounds from her room so he could assume she was sleeping peacefully.

About time.

He drank deeply, draining the glass in a few seconds before going for a refill. Halfway through the second glass, a sharp knock at the door made Yusuke jump.

Coughing and spluttering, Yusuke emerged while sopping wet. He put the glass down and approached the front door.

Mom must've forgotten her keys. Figures.

The locks clicked and the door swung open. "How's it hanging, Mom?" Yusuke asked wearily.

"Yusuke, I need to see Kura,"

Yusuke gawked at the visitor. "Kurama?! It's the middle of the night. What are you doing here?"

Kurama's face was hard. His eyes were darting past Yusuke's shoulder towards Sakura's bedroom. "Kura. I need to see her,"

"Look, I don't know what you're thinking Fox Boy, but Kura's asleep. At least save your hormonal urges for daylight," Yusuke groaned.

"It's nothing to do with that," Kurama said urgently. "I just need to -"

A faint cry came from Sakura's room.

The boys looked at each other for a second, and it became a race to get to her first.

Akumu's gloating face was all Sakura could see. "I'm going to break you, Miss Urameshi," she drooled. "But first, I need more blood!"

The knife sliced away at Sakura's arm while Elder Toguro's tentacles held her down. Akumu's face lit up with pleasure as bright red blood flowed unrestrained. She held a cup to the laceration. It quickly filled, and Akumu drank greedily.

"Please, stop!" Sakura sobbed. "I don't want this!" How could she bleed so much, and not die? And where was Kurama? Where was Yusuke?

Elder Toguro's tongue nicked at her ear. "That's all part of the fun, my pretty!" he cackled. "You might not want this, but we do!"

Akumu laughed. "I do love hearing those pathetic sobs," she howled. "And there's still plenty of time for more,"

"Well, isn't that perfect timing, my lizard friends?" Elder Toguro snickered.

The three tokage demons were swishing over, ready to have their moment…

"No!" Sakura cried. "Don't!"

The dream shattered at her words, replaced by the darkest night Sakura had ever seen.

"Sakura,"

A flash of lightning streaked across the void and revealed a silhouette apparently waiting for her attention.

"You are not yet strong enough, child," His voice seemed to echo through centuries in order to reach Sakura's ears.

He was back. The great shadowy figure had returned to her on the other side of the chasm.

Sakura stretched out, trying to reach him. He was still too far away.

"What does that mean? Strong enough for what?"

"Not strong enough to know me. Not strong enough to understand the past," His hair glowed even whiter. "Danger is approaching. But you will prove equal to the challenge,"

The strange figure was fading again, and Sakura wanted to follow. She had so many more questions, and he knew the answers.

"Don't go!" Sakura called. "Please, tell me who you are!"

"I'm part of you," he replied softly. "I've always been a part of you. You will understand eventually, but not yet. My time is short, and the distance is wide,"

The wind was gaining momentum. Sakura's eyes began to water.

"Don't go!"

"We will meet soon, Sakura. But until then, have faith. You can do this. I know you can,"

"Wait, please! Don't leave me. Don't leave me!"

"Kura!"

The darkness was swallowing him. Again, she saw a forest. A desert. A giant red sky. Purple lightning. A great gathering of armies ready to tear each other apart…

"Kura! Wake up!"

Sakura's eyes flew open. "Don't go!" she cried. "Please, wait!"

"KURA!" Hands gripped her wrists and held them firmly. "It's me, Kura. Just me!"

Her blurred vision focused on the emeralds glittering above her.

"Kurama?" she choked out. "You're here?"

"Yes," he breathed, and pulled her into his arms. "It's just me, love,"

Sakura's racing heart began to slow down at the sound of his heartbeat, and she realised her brother was standing there. He looked worried.

"Yusuke," Sakura said before instantly cutting herself off.

"Yeah, I'm right here," he said quietly. "I'm not going anywhere,"

"Did I wake you? I'm so sorry,"

Yusuke resisted the urge to sigh. Typical Sakura. Always worried about bothering someone else.

"You didn't," he jerked his head towards their rose-haired visitor. "That was Fox Boy,"

"What?" Sakura looked back at Kurama. "Sorry, it's not that I'm not glad to see you or anything, but what are you doing here?"

Kurama gently moved her so he could look into her eyes.

"Call it a gut feeling," he murmured. "I had a strong sense that you needed me. It seems I was correct,"

Yusuke walked over to the bed and crouched down to meet Sakura's eye level.

"Did you have another nightmare, Squirt?"

"Um…" Sakura closed her eyes and thought for a moment. "At first I was, but then… I wasn't,"

"What do you mean?" Yusuke frowned.

Sakura fingered the stone around her neck. It tethered her to reality.

"I started off having a nightmare about… that last fight I had," she shuddered, and continued in the same breath. "But then, it changed,"

Kurama tilted his head slightly. "Go on?"

"Wait…" Sakura pressed a hand to her face. "Kurama, that flower you used on me before we left the island," she said slowly. "You said something about it preventing dreams?"

"...That's correct," Kurama had no idea why that was relevant. "The Dream Flower causes whoever inhales it to fall into a deep, dreamless sleep. But what does that have to do with anything?"

Sakura held up her hand, like she was straining to recall something.

"Then it wasn't a dream. I remember now… I was in the forest, and then…"

She slipped out of Kurama's hold and stumbled to her desk where she began scribbling on a piece of scrap paper.

"Kura?" Yusuke stepped closer, but she didn't even acknowledge him. "What are you doing?"

No answer. Sakura kept scrawling away. Yusuke flicked the light switch on and stared at his twin. Neither he nor Kurama had any idea what Sakura was up to.

Kurama got up and took Sakura's shoulders before pulling her around to face him.

"Kura, what are you talking about?" He kept his voice gentle, but direct.

"Here," Sakura shoved the paper in his face, and both boys read what she'd written.

I'm part of you.

My time runs short.

We'll meet soon.

A great danger is coming.

Yusuke looked bewildered. "What's all this? Some kind of poem?"

"No," Sakura snatched the paper back and clutched it to her chest. "It's what I dreamed just now, and back on the island,"

Kurama pushed the hair from her eyes. "What did you dream of, Kura?"

"I saw a man on a throne, but I didn't see his face. He was hidden in shadow, but he knew my name and said he was part of me,"

Sakura screwed up her face in concentration. "I've seen him before. I'm sure he's the one who spoke to me when I was lost in the forest. And before I woke up. And again, just now,"

"Kura, breathe," Kurama took the paper from Sakura's hands and brought her to sit on the bed.

He looked over the words she'd written. "Is this what you heard?"

Sakura nodded. "He always says the same thing. What does it mean?"

Yusuke threw up his hands. "Sorry, but I'm clueless. You sure this wasn't just one of those crazy nightmares, Kura?"

"How could it be?" Sakura said almost desperately. "If I saw him during a dreamless sleep, it has to be real. Right, Kurama?"

Kurama didn't answer right away. "There are many possibilities of what this vision actually means," He said while staring at the paper. "But perhaps we should discuss this with Master Genkai tomorrow,"

"Great idea, Fox Boy," Yusuke groaned. "Now are we done here?"

"I -" Sakura began to speak, but Kurama laid a finger over her lips. He carefully folded the paper, tucked it inside his jacket, then stroked his hand down Sakura's face.

"It's late, my hana," he said softly. "You need to rest,"

Yusuke cleared his throat. "Another great idea from Kurama," he said pointedly. "You remember where the door is, right?"

In response, Sakura jumped back on her feet and shoved Yusuke out of the room instead. "Let me jog your memory!"

The door shut, the lock clicked, but Yusuke did not go quietly. "What the hell, you damn brat?!"

"This is my room, and I decide who's in here," Sakura snapped. "Just go to bed already,"

Yusuke hammered on the door. "I just won the Dark Tournament. You can't -"

"I just did!" Sakura hollered from the other side. "Now beat it, or I'll use my Spirit Snare again!"

They could hear Yusuke spluttering in shock for a few seconds, before ultimately giving up quicker than either of them expected. He stomped back to his own room muttering obscenities under his breath.

"I thought he'd put up more of an argument," Kurama looked amused. "Is there a reason he didn't?"

"Probably due to the fact that I used my Spirit Snare on him when he tried to choose the arcade over homework earlier,"

Alone at last. Sakura raked her hair back with her fingers. "I'm sorry. I didn't know you were so concerned about me,"

"Don't apologise. If I'm honest, I was rather relieved for an excuse to be with you tonight,"

Sakura sighed and laid her head in Kurama's lap. "Will you stay, please? Until I fall asleep again?"

Kurama kissed her temple. "I'll be here until you tell me to go,"

"I don't want you to go," Sakura raised her head.

Kurama's hands moved from her face, sliding down her neck to her shoulders.

"I won't," he whispered and gave her a slow, burning kiss that Sakura passionately returned. Her hands found their own way to his chest, and she deepened the kiss hungrily.

Kurama could barely contain himself. The feel of Sakura brushing up against him with nothing more than a thin cotton shirt over her figure was so stirring. His demon instincts were whispering to him, and his human body longed to obey those urges.

He could already feel it before the physical change began. The first hint was a trace of silver that began threading its way through the red strands of hair…

Kurama gripped Sakura's delicate waist and pulled her closer. She gasped, and he spun her around towards the pillows before kissing her harder. His soft growl began to deepen.

The hardness returned, and he paused for a split second. Did she know how he felt?

I want you so badly, my love.

Kurama was beginning to push Sakura down on her back when she completely froze in his arms.

I… I'm scared, Kurama.

His eyes widened, and he immediately pulled away from her. Sakura lay there, apparently paralysed. He saw the fear lapping at her, the flashbacks threatening to pull the girl he loved into that unbearable void.

Guilt and shame engulfed Kurama. He'd gone too far, moved too quickly in his arousal. He'd let Yoko's influence take over. He'd frightened her, and that was completely unforgivable.

How could I lose control like that?

As if she knew what he was thinking, (which, Kurama had to remind himself, she almost certainly did!) Sakura clumsily reared herself up and slammed into his chest. This was not a conversation they could have out loud, especially with Yusuke in the next room.

It wasn't you. I promise, I'm not afraid of you.

Kurama couldn't quite meet her eyes. I'm… so sorry, my love. Truly. I didn't mean to -

Enough!

Sakura's mouth covered his. Her teeth scraped his lips in their desperation to get the point across.

Please, believe me. I could never be afraid of you, Kurama. I'm afraid of myself.

Without a word, Kurama pulled her into his chest and combed through her hair.

All in good time, my precious Kura. You don't need to worry. But… Kurama took a breath. There is something we need to talk about. That you need to think about…

He couldn't hold it off any longer. He finally told her about the possibility of erasing her worst memories, almost verbatim what he had said to the others in the hotel.

Sakura's body tensed following Kurama's explanation of the Dream Flower's magic. She didn't say anything, but her hand clutched at his shirt.

Forgetting…it sounds too good to be true. But it's like you said, so much could go wrong. What in the world should I do?

"You don't need to decide anything right away," Kurama whispered. "But I wanted to give you all options. Whatever you choose, love. I'll stand by you. We all will,"

Her breathing was slowing. "I need to think… talk…to Genkai…"

The rhythmic pulsing of his heart, the calming feel of his hands running through her hair. She was falling asleep again.

"You can sleep, sweetheart," Kurama kissed her forehead. "I'll be here when you wake up,"

"Mmm…" Sakura replied, and the weight of sleep finally overcame her.

Sensui took a few steps towards the window. "I must see the Spirit Detective's battles. But you say the stadium was destroyed, along with the tapes. However, there is a way…"

No-one spoke. Sensui turned back to both apparitions. "Hisuru, you say both the detective and his sister believe you to be dead, correct?"

Scarface nodded, not sure where this was going.

"It would be advisable to keep it that way. Since you never told the girl your real name, it is unlikely she has worked out who you are yet,"

There was a glint in Sensui's eyes.

"But if Miss Urameshi is as intelligent as you say, I'm sure she will very soon. Therefore, we must erase your records as swiftly as possible and buy more time. That way she and the rest of her team will be unprepared when we strike,"

Scarface's jaw dropped. "But how, sir? I spent years in shadow. There should be no trail for Sakura Urameshi to follow,"

"Didn't you mention your old teacher? The master who failed you and left you for dead?"

Anger coursed through the boy. "What of him?!"

Sensui placed a hand on his shoulder. "He almost certainly kept records in Spirit World where he lived,"

"Spirit World?" Scarface felt the colour drain from his face. "He was there the whole time?!"

The old man had been safe in Spirit World, as he suffered alone? He must've seen it all from there, but sat by and let it happen. The thought was beyond sickening. Beyond infuriating.

"Of course he was," Sensui continued, noticing the boy's rising emotion. "The old man lived a life of luxury while you languished away in that hell. He may be gone, but now is your chance to start settling the score. With my instruction, you will be able to get into Spirit World undetected, and bring the records to me,"

Scarface swallowed. "Settle the score?"

"That's right, my boy," Sensui smiled. "Bring me what I ask, and the answers you seek shall be revealed,"

"You promise?" Scarface whispered. "Will I know everything? Even the truth about the girl?"

Sensui put a hand on his head. "I promise," he vowed. "Don't you know that we were brought together under divine purpose? I was drawn to your soul, my boy. Clearly you are meant to help our cause. It is your destiny. We need you. And for this, your reward will be the truth you were denied, the justice you deserved, and answers from Sakura Urameshi,"

Scarface blinked back tears of joy and relief. "Tell me. What must I do?"

He could hardly believe his luck, being found by Sensui on that island. He wasn't alone anymore. He was wanted, even needed. Sensui had promised him answers, and best of all, they were going to realise Sakyo's dream.

I'll carry out the mission, Master Sakyo. I won't let you down.

They walked hand in hand down the street. The crisp morning air nipped at Sakura's face, but she seemed to like it.

"It's so fresh," she said quietly. "I love early mornings. It's like the world starts anew. It makes me feel like anything is possible,"

Kurama couldn't stop gazing at his flower. Sakura was smiling, and she seemed… lighter, somehow. Her face looked more relaxed than it had ever been, especially since they began training for the tournament.

Even if they were just going to see Genkai, this was the first time the two of them had gone anywhere together without fearing for their lives. Neither Kurama nor Sakura were going to take that for granted.

Kurama stopped walking and looked at Sakura properly. His heart swelled at the sight. Sakura was dressed so differently than he was used to. She wore a knee length black skirt, matching tights, brown ankle boots, and a blue-green turtleneck with an artful cut-out above her chest. The Hiruseki stone glittered around her neck. Her hair was hanging loose, held off her face with a deep green headband.

This picture of beauty, this perfect blend of elegant and practical… is this who you truly are, my hana?

"What are you looking at?" Her mouth twitched as if she were trying not to laugh.

"The most beautiful sight on earth," he replied.

Kurama had seen Sakura in her serviceable school uniform, her casual nightwear, her surprisingly alluring fighting attire, and dressed to the nines for their first date. But this time, she looked so right. Of course, she'd look good in a paper bag, but still.

"Oh…" Sakura bit her lip and lowered her eyes, but not in time to hide the blush creeping over her pale skin.

Kurama glanced around to make sure nobody was watching, but it was early on a Saturday morning, and the streets were quite empty.

Perfect.

He reached into his hair, and closed his eyes. A beautiful sakura blossom flourished from the seed he'd chosen.

Sakura's face lit up. "I'll never get tired of watching you do that,"

Kurama smiled. "And I shall never get tired of making you happy, my love,"

"You already have," she whispered.

What did I ever do to deserve you, Kurama?

The red-haired demon carefully tucked the blossom behind her ear. He drank in the captivating sight. She was so pretty. With her round eyes, shy smile and silky hair, she seemed like a woodland nymph, or some cute little fairytale pixie.

Mine.

The concept still took his breath away.

"We should probably keep moving," Sakura's soft voice called Kurama back to reality.

"Of course," Kurama slipped his hand back into hers, and they continued their journey towards the train station.

Genkai calmly sipped her tea while staring out at the mountains. She could already sense them walking up that long staircase.

Any minute now.

Sakura had called the night before and said she'd be coming in the morning with Kurama. It came as no surprise to the old lady. Of course the girl would be chomping at the bit to begin this mysterious errand.

She would undoubtedly have questions about Master Shinsuke as well. There hadn't been time for Sakura to process the revelations he'd virtually sprung on her before his death. And once she heard her teacher's message, it would jolt her into action despite the complexities, and the potential danger.

I hope you know what you're asking of your final student, Shin. She might be your last hope, but you know as well as I do that Sakura Urameshi will take this mission personally, even to her own detriment.

Even Kurama would be unlikely to dissuade her entirely. Sakura would fight to the ends of the earth to complete the task her teacher had left behind. That girl was certainly determined. And stubborn.

It has to be you, Sakura. You're the only one with any chance at solving the final mystery. If you can, perhaps Shin's tormented soul can finally rest.

A.N. If this chapter had a metaphor, it would be a boiling kettle. Knowing what's coming, how the seeds planted throughout the past two books are finally going to bloom... oh, it's almost too much to handle!

ANYWAY.

What are your thoughts on this chapter? What do you think will happen during Chapter Black? Any ideas on Sakura's mission? What about Scarface and Sensui?

Chapter 2 is almost ready, and will be released July 4th or 5th. Full disclosure: my city is currently back in lockdown (thanks Covid, you're an absolute nightmare) til at least July 9th. It absolutely sucks, but it is what it is.

Now that I'm finished college and can't really leave the house (my new job isn't one I can work from home), I'm going to have more time to write. It might sound pathetic, but July 4th is actually my birthday and I won't be able to see anyone or do anything for it, so sharing another chapter with you all is going to be the best!

In the meantime, don't forget to follow/favourite so you don't miss a moment, and please take a minute to leave a review. Don't be shy, I want to know what you all think!

Next Chapter: Sakura's task is revealed, but it might already be too late.
