Being a cop often meant having to work while other people, with regular nine-to-five jobs, were out celebrating. That was the case for Dee and Ryo tonight; they'd been lucky enough to get Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off this year, but it meant having to work over New Year.

If that hadn't been depressing enough, they were currently stuck on a stakeout, the kind that meant sitting in a car and watching the entrance to a building for several hours. It was a dull and monotonous task, made worse by the dismal weather, although it could have been worse. Temperatures were currently above average for the time of year, so instead of snow and ice they only had rain to contend with.

They were sharing a half-cup of coffee from their almost empty thermos flask, with Ryo promising the next time they did this he was bringing two flasks, when Dee suddenly shushed him.

"What is it?" Ryo whispered. "Do you see something?"

Dee squeezed his arm. "Listen."

Then Ryo heard it, and he peered through the rain-streaked car window. "Fireworks!"

"Must be midnight!" Dee grinned in the darkness, pulling Ryo close for a kiss. "Happy New Year, babe!"
