Ryo frowned out the window at the darkness, lit only by streetlamps, the glow from nearby apartment windows, and the headlights of passing cars. It wasn't an appealing sight; there was still snow on the ground, churned into grey slush on the road itself and piled in icy lumps on the sidewalks and in the gutters.
"How's it look out there?" Dee asked, coming out of the bathroom, towelling his hair dry.
"Dark, cold." Ryo turned to his lover. "D'you think there was sunshine today?" Two weeks of working second shift and neither of them had seen daylight once. It was the early hours of the morning when they got off work and headed home, and still dark when they went to bed. The daytime happened while they were asleep, and when the sun went down in the evenings, they were just waking up.
"It's the middle of winter, and judgin' by last night's forecast, we wouldn't be seein' the sun even if we were workin' days."
"I hate second shift in winter," Ryo grumbled. "If we were on third shift, we'd at least see some daylight after we clocked off."
"You'll see the sun soon. Winter won't last forever."
