"I'm completely straight." Even as he said the words, deep down Ryo knew he was lying, to himself as much as to his new partner. What else was he supposed to say though? He didn't want Dee to think… what? That he might be interested?
He remembered a kid back at school, a kid who had liked girls well enough, even had a girlfriend, but someone had found out he also fancied a boy in the year ahead. The news had spread through the school like wildfire, the kid's girlfriend had dumped him, the object of his adolescent crush had beat him up, and the other kids had picked on him for being a queer.
That had solidified something in twelve-year-old Ryo's mind: he was never, ever going to admit to finding certain boys attractive, he was going to date girls, be normal, and fit in. That way he wouldn't get bullied and made fun of, and his friends wouldn't stop wanting to hang out with him.
His plan had worked; he hadn't been one of the most popular kids, had never wanted to be, but he'd had enough friends, had been on the soccer team, had dated girls… Everything had been fine, until his parents had been murdered and the rumours about them being criminals and drug dealers had started spreading. That was when his friends had abandoned him, but at least it hadn't been because he liked boys.
Only now it had been so long that the original lie he'd forced himself to believe about being completely straight had stuck. Even if he almost wanted to admit the truth, he couldn't because he'd built his entire life around being a straight guy; if he admitted it was a lie, he wasn't sure he'd know who he was anymore.
