Chapter 6: Kissing Booth (Mickie/Courtney)

Courtney's POV, Kissing Booth Auction, Charlotte, North Carolina

Sitting at the booth in my jean jacket, slacks and running shoes, a large neon purple sign above me reads 'Kissing Auction Sign-In Area' with multiple kiss marks and hearts, I think to myself: How did I get here? Granted, this is for a good cause, but I'm still wondering how exactly Gretchen came up with this. If you have been living under a rock for a bit, Bahamas, Cuba, and Dominican Republic just got attacked by snakes. No, I don't mean that figuratively. Giant sea snakes, one of which was about twice the size of a sailboat, rose from the water and brought hell all through the islands, destroying buildings and causing widespread panic. Their dark blue scales and white-yellow eyes gave the snakes such a demonic look, too. Everyone from the President to the Pope have been bombarded with questions about them. Goddamn did they look terrifying in those newsreels! The local military, along with the U.S. and allies, were able to kill them, but the damage was already done. Their remains have already been taken by researchers for further study. Even though the government said they were 'preparing contingencies for future attacks', such as stationing patrol boats around Puerto Rico, Key West, and Florida, this surprised everyone. I'm still trying to wrap my head around it, myself. Shudders! Damn scaly demons.

Okay, so now I bet you're wondering: how did giant sea snakes attacking the Caribbean lead to me sitting here, at this auction booth, waiting for people to give money for kiss raffles? Well, to cut things short, my boss Gretchen works with the Red Cross to provide resources to the organization, and to hold fundraisers to raise money for the victims. Because of this event, the Red Cross has been asking for donations from anywhere to help repair the cities of Nassau, Havana, and Puerto Playa. Gretchen likes to think outside the box when she helps others. This time, she decided to have a 'kissing auction', where people in Charlotte, NC, our main location, would be able to pay for raffles to win a chance at kissing their favorite celebs.

Trust me, most of our friends raised their eyebrows at her proposal, myself included. Gretchen did cover her bases and organized it well. Firstly, only people who would go for testing are allowed to buy tickets, to avoid getting any celebrities sick. They also must have background checks, which isn't a problem… unless you don't want to give some personal information. When some guys protested online, Gretchen argued "You give away personal info on social media all the time, but not for a chance to kiss your favorite celebrity?" Security is tight, just in case, and it is at the celebrity's discretion how long the kiss is with their raffle winner, although 5-7 seconds seems to be the roundabout figure.

Everyday individuals can also volunteer, either as 'auctioneers' or celebs. Gretchen is overseeing the entire event as main host, along with members of the Red Cross. I know Alisha signed up to be on the auction list but is also working as a host. Masha and Jordynne are both married, so the answer was a resounding never, but they make for good 'unofficial' security. Giselle, I'm not too sure. I volunteered with my friend, Jessica, to work at this booth, but I also paid for a ticket. Hardcore Country singer Mickie James is among the celebrities participating, and since she is one of my all-time celebrity crushes, I gave it a shot. I said 'What the hell. It's for a great cause.', and gave Gretchen 120$ for a raffle. That's 50 for testing and 70 for the actual ticket. She smiled and thanked me. You could pay 280$ for 3 tickets, but I'm not that rich. I still have an apartment and 2 cat babies to care for. But holy crap, imagine if I win? Mickie's like the total package. From her singing talent, to her positivity after suffering from body image issues and her devotion to supporting others, especially women, she's been an inspiration. The fact that she's drop dead gorgeous also helps. I mean, come on! Big brown eyes. Long wavy brown hair. Those full lips. And a figure that makes most mouths drop when she says she's over 40. She's the total country babe. My raffle probably won't go anywhere, but a girl can dream.

"No need. We have everything prepared. Did you order online?" Jessica asks, breaking me from my train of thought as the geeky-looking man in front of her nods, showing the dual ticket on his phone. He has a pair of black-framed glasses, a plaid shirt and simple dress pants with loafers. "Perfect, and I see you've been tested. You're in section 11. Just follow Alisha and she'll get you to your destination." Jessica adds with a smile. Blushing, he just nods and follows Alisha out of the room.

Nudging her, I ask. "What was that about?" I give her a grin and an eyebrow raise, while Jessica just rolls her eyes and fixes her pink hair. Her leather jacket is on the back of her seat. She's wearing a pink t-shirt and leather skirt, with black fishnet stockings and boots.

"Don't know. Maybe he saw I was on the auction page."

I gasp at her comment. "What? You're a participant?!" She nods. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"Would you have approved?" she asks.

"No!"

"And that's why."

"Jessica! That's why you dressed like you're heading to a club?" I say, laughing and pushing her arm.

"Chill out, will ya!" Jessica argues, giving me a playful shove. "It'll be fine. A smooch or two and we give money to those poor people suffering. It's a win-win."

"You're sure this isn't because you might win the prize raffle of 100$ subway gift card?" Yeah, there's that too. Any non-celebrity contestant who participates can win a 100$ subway gift card, be they raffle winners or auction… stars? Not sure what to call people who offer themselves for dates at auctions. Models, maybe? I stare at Jessica's face, who is smoothing out a crease in her skirt.

"Nope." Jessica argues, a smirk painted on her face as she stares ahead. I know her too well. She loves Subway.

"I worry about you sometimes, Jess." Jessica laughs out loud.

"Courtney, you worry too much. I can handle myself. They try to touch me, I'll be touching them." she argues, cracking her knuckles. Jessica's a beast, but I'm still a little unsure. "Who are we?"

"Come on. Don't you start with that now." I warn.

"I can't hear you!" she singsongs, before nudging me again. "Come on, Courtney. Who are we?"

"The Death Dolls." I murmur.

"Louder!"

"The Death Dolls! With the hottest Twitch stream running Tuesdays and Wednesdays for Fallout content!" I say, making Jessica laugh. She puts her hands in a rocker pose, before urging me to do the same. Copying her, we both scream out. "This is going to be sick!"

Courtney's POV, 1 Hour Later, Auction Hall, Charlotte, North Carolina

Man, this place is packed! There's at least a couple hundred guests in the hall, and an equal number outside. I guess people have nothing better to do on a Saturday afternoon? Loads of reporters are on-scene as well, either documenting the event or waiting for more notable guests. Security also had to escort some, uh, 'anti-kiss' protesters who were slinging rocks. I'm pretty certain they were 'anti' everything, because they kept targeting certain pictures of LGBTQ stars here, today. Seriously, read a book and grow up. Love is love, and this is to help others, so who gives a fuck who wants to kiss who? I mean, Lady Gaga said she might attend! If a super celebrity like her would come, this is big.

There are quite a few celebrities that have already gone up. Singer Harley Cameron got a standing ovation after she sang her heart out to her raffle ticket winner. They smooched shortly after. Our friend Taya refused to kiss anyone unless they petted her dogs and were able to get them to sit, which was kind of funny to watch. And the duo of Cassie Lee and Jessica McKay, from Iconic Cosmetics, were the highlight, so far. Gretchen announced that Jessica's raffle winner was Shawn Spears, Cassie's real-life husband. Cassie's face was a mixture of shock and confusion, blinking with her mouth pursed. The audience and I were left wondering what was going to happen. Shawn went upstairs with a chair in hand, before placing it down and sitting on it. He explained he had paid for a kiss, but that he never said he would be the one giving it. It wasn't until Jessica slowly walked up to Cassie did she realize what he meant. There was a little hesitation on Cassie's face, but Jessica simply whispered to her, pushed her hair away from her face and gave her the smoothest, most sensual looking kiss I've ever seen. They both ended up hugging after, with Cassie being smiley and laughing a lot. I watch as Gretchen leads a local Baseball star to the exit stairs, then go back to her podium with her cue cards, adjusting the microphone.

"Next up, we have the lovely Twitch steamer, Jessica Havok!" Gretchen yells. The girls and I whoop in the audience, as Jessica goes to the stage in her leather jacker and skirt, twirling and waving excitedly towards the crowd. She stands next to Gretchen, the latter fixing her dress. "Rock on, Jessica!" she says, doing the rocker gesture with her hands, before grabbing the microphone. "Now, the moment of truth. Let's see whose raffle won a kiss with Jessica?" Pulling a name from the hat, she opens the paper and responds. "And the winner is: Mr. Jerry Orville from North Charlotte. Come on up, Jerry!"

I watch Alisha go towards the section to bring the man to the stage. I recognize Jerry as the geeky dude from earlier, who was blushing at Jessica. Giving him a shit-eating grin, Jess stares as the man walks up to the stage and smiles at her. He keeps running hands over his shirt and looks like he's about to pass out. Jess is about 2ft. taller than him.

"Jerry, is it?" she asks cheekily.

He nods. "I, uh, I watch your Twitch streams all the time. Your Resident Evil walkthroughs are awesome." he admonishes.

The two converse back and forth for a bit, before Gretchen urges them on. "Come on! It's all for charity!" Suddenly, the crowd starts chanting for a kiss. Jeez, they're like animals at a show today!

"Do we just, uh, do it here?" Jerry asks, fixing his collar. Jessica nods, looking him up and down. Jess… what's going on? Jerry closes his eyes and puckers his lips, going towards Jess's face. Placing a hand to cover his mouth, she grabs him by the collar, his eyes shooting open in response.

"This is gonna be sick!" she yells, before kissing him hard. Jerry literally blinks in shock, the crowd yelling in excitement. His eyes flutter closed as Jessica proceeds to 'eat his face'… yeah, Jess, I didn't need that visual before lunch. Pulling away, she yells to the crowd, the cheers getting louder.

"Aw, that was kind of cute!" Alisha says, putting a hand to her heart.

"Yeah, if you don't mind getting your face eaten whole." Giselle argues, flipping through her phone to the camera app.

"Well, I think it's cute."

"Says the girl whose husband bought 5 raffles to kiss someone he already lives with." she responds sarcastically.

"You're one to talk. Where's you raffle?" Giselle just blows a raspberry. "And Eddie's my ride or die, so he doesn't mind." Alisha asserts with a shrug. Just then, I notice Jerry call to Jess, before speaking with Gretchen.

"You're absolutely right. Folks, Jerry actually purchased '2' raffles. Jess, better get back up here, cause Jerry's owed another kiss." Gretchen says, causing the crowd to laugh. Jessica runs back up the stairs. Jerry surprises the crowd, dancing for a second. Jess joins in, before he takes her hand and spins her. Giselle and Alisha record it on their phones, while I just smile at the ridiculous vibe of the two. Jess awkwardly twirls, before Jerry dips her. I see my BF's eyes go wide, before Jerry and Jess passionately smooch, eliciting a roar from the crowd. Giselle yells happily, while Alisha and I just clap at the ordeal. Jerry brings Jessica back up and pulls away, the two smiling at each other as she, reluctantly, lets go of his hands. "Alright, let's give it up for Jerry and Jessica!" The crowd claps and cheers, as the two walk down the stairs. Jessica comes beside me, where we grill her on the experience.

"It was so chill. We just geeked out over Fallout lore, so I had to give it my all."

"You mean eating his face like he was a red velvet cupcake on cheat meal day?" I ask.

Giselle cuts in to say. "What about the dance and dip kiss? Did you plant that?" Jessica just blushes and shakes her head no.

"No, not at all! He surprised me. Jerry's just… a really good kisser." she admits.

"So, when the wedding, huh?" Alisha teases, causing Jessica to pout.

"It's not like that! He's just a really sweet dude. He even gave me his gamertag so we can play Fallout, together." Jess asserts.

"Yeah, I'm sure he's wants you to play. With his joystick." Giselle argues, laughing with a hand over his face.

Jess just groans. I give her a half-hug. "Don't worry, Jess. I'm happy you made a friend."

Giving me a strange look, her body bristling for a second, she responds. "You're okay with this, all of a sudden?"

"Yeah. But you've got to admit, when he dipped you-"

"*Sigh* Yes, he's got moves." The three of us all clap at her admission, before Gretchen starts announcing the next person.

"Now, the next contestant is a very special guest. Multi-time recording artist, and Virginia's own 'Hardcore Country' star, Mickie James!"

I feel my pulse shoot up as the words leave Gretchen's mouth and reverberate around the room. The crowd yells and cheers, the stage lights turning to the far left as someone starts walking on-stage.

'Holy shit!' I think to myself. Mickie James, wearing her signature white cowboy boots with tassels, a pair of jean shorts, a black sleeveless shirt, and a jean jacket with white writing, saunters up the red carpet. Her hair is curled down, her makeup accentuating her mischievous brown eyes and the pink gloss on her lips. She cheers as the crowd roars for her, holding her jewel encrusted white and pink cowboy hat as she bows. Mickie fans herself as she goes near Gretchen.

"You okay, Mickie? You look a little out of breath, and you haven't even kissed anyone yet!" she argues, causing some members of the audience to laugh.

Going close to the microphone, she responds. "I'm doing great. It's a little hot backstage, just a little, but I'm here. And I'm excited to be at this charity auction in Charlotte, North Carolina!" she yells, the audience following suit. "This if for all those impacted by the recent events in the Caribbean. And know that even if you don't win, this money is going to help those people without food. Without homes. Without power. So, thank you, to everyone who came out today to support this auction. You guys are awesome!" she admonishes. We all scream and clap, Jess laughing when she sees both of my arms fly up. "Well, alright. Okay, Gretchen, tell me, who's the lucky winner? Huh? Who is getting some sugar from Ms. Hardcore Country, Mickie James?" The crowd cheers once more, as Gretchen opens the raffle.

"I'm about to announce it, right now. And, the winner of this auction is none other than Co-"

"AHHH!" Crash! We hear a woman scream to the right, running from the entrance and knocking down a chair. A bunch of attendees get up from their seats, shouting and moving away from the scene. Security tells people to move back. Everyone begins to stand at the back, and I catch a glimpse of the issue. A tangled mess of red, blue, black, and yellow ropes on the floor? Looking closer, I finally realize that the ropes are moving. The hairs on my arms stand up as a shiver goes through my body; they're snakes. Slowly, Jessica, Alisha, Giselle, and I escort the people outside and away from the venue. The crowd quickly shuffles to the exit doors when I see someone sprinting towards us, security hot on his tail. He yells for us to move, before colliding with Jessica's front and bouncing back, stopping in his tracks. Jess almost loses her footing, but I give her my hand and brace her before she does.

"Hey, what the hell!" I argue, letting Jessica go and shoving the guy back. He trips and falls, 3 of our security guards going to him. As he tries to get up, they tackle him down, holding him in place.

"Don't move! Bhupinder, get the cops down here! I'm not letting go until help arrives. Son of a bitch opened a jar of snakes in the back." Heath orders, the West Virginia native's voice calm, despite the calamity. The man struggles under Heath, but to no avail.

"Look at what you did!" Rhyno tells him, looking down on his face, anger shooting through his voice as he points to the fear-stricken audience members holding their purses or checking around them for the slithering creatures. "You proud of yourself? Being a stupid little shit!"

"We got this, ladies. Best head on outside, now." Heath claims, sitting on the man's back as he holds him in a tight arm-lock, his green-sleeved jacket ruffled as he shifts around to get free.

We head outside, trying to calm the other people down as Giselle goes looking for Gretchen. Police arrive at the scene, numerous reporters snapping photographs as the perpetrator gets hauled into a squad car. Animal control goes inside to collect the serpents with snake-handling tools and bags. Police take statements from us detailing what we saw. I even got a thank you from Gretchen for stopping the guy, a thought echoed by Alisha, Giselle, and some other attendees. I wasn't even trying to! He hurt my friend, so I set him straight. By the time it's all over, it's already 5 PM and most guests have already.

"Hey, you headed home?" Gretchen asks, Jessica and I getting our bags as I prepare our car keys. I've been checking through my knapsack religiously, out of fear a snake might be hiding somewhere in it. Thankfully, nothing.

"Yeah. You need help with anything before we go?" Gretchen shakes her head.

"No. But I wanted to let you know that Mickie left. I know you were a fan. You also won the raffle, by the way." What?

"Really?"

"Yeah. I was going to announce it before, you know, shit hit the fan. But, yeah, you're the winner." Well, I guess that's cool. Nothing can be done, now that she's gone. Gretchen hands me a white envelope.

"What's this?"

"Mickie told me she felt bad about what happened, and asked if she knew who the raffle winner was. I told her you worked for me, so she told me to give this to you."

Opening it, I pull out two tickets to her concert in October in Charlottesville, along with a note.

"Sorry about what happened, Courtney. Hope this makes up for what happened. – Mickie James." Right next to her signature was a pink kiss mark. I feel myself blush as Jess checks over my shoulder.

"Hey, you got two tickets to a Mickie James concert?!"

"Hell yeah!" I turn to her. "You want to come?"

"Do you even need to ask?" she asks, causing Gretchen and I to laugh. We loop arms around each other. "This is going to be so sickk!"
