Winter in New York was always cold, but even by the city's usual standards, this was extreme. It wasn't just the heavy snowfall over the past few days that had turned the bustling metropolis into an arctic landscape and caused everything to practically grind to a halt. It wasn't even that the temperature had plummeted overnight to well below freezing. The real problem was the wind, so frigid that Dee wouldn't have been surprised to learn it was sweeping straight down from the North Pole.
It wasn't a day to be outside if you didn't have to be. Even the schools were closed. Unfortunately for Dee and his partner, the police didn't get to take snow days. It wasn't unheard of for criminals to take advantage of bad weather to carry out some of their more nefarious schemes.
So here he and Ryo were, trudging along a road that hadn't been cleared yet, on their way to investigate a possible jewellery heist.
"Hope it's a false alarm," Ryo muffled through his scarf. "I'm wrapped up in so many layers there's no way I can chase anyone."
Dee snickered. "Maybe we could just pelt the thieves with snowballs until they surrender."
