Toshinori's Choice
Chapter four: The first day of school
The day that had Toshinori nervous had finally come at long last. It was the first day of school at UA, the start of the last school year in the alternate timeline before Japan was grounded under the heel of Dabi's boot. The Symbol of Peace was allowing himself a break from fretting over that stuff, as he had something ELSE to fret over here right now. That, of course, being his step-son and (in this current timeline) successor to using One For All, Izuku Midoriya, starting his first day here at UA as one of the students in the hero course.
Toshinori was in his base form as he walked a bit with Izuku down the hall that led to the classroom for Class 1-A, who would be led by Shouta Aizawa. Toshinori couldn't go all the way with Izuku, even though he could use the 'step-dad wanting to see kid off safely' excuse, because there was a few certain somethings that he had to do. "I know that you'll do well, my boy," Toshinori said, "Your homeroom teacher is a firm man, but he is also fair. He will do right by you."
Izuku nodded in understanding. "I have every reason to believe that, dad." As the father and son pair walked, Toshinori stopped short when something caught his attention from the corner of his eye, making him turn to see as well as getting Izuku to stop when he noticed his step-dad stopping to see something. What Toshinori had seen was Hitoshi Shinso, one of the students in the alternate timeline's Class 1-A; Toshinori didn't remember much about Shinso from the alternate timeline aside from the fact he was one of the ten students killed in the USJ attack.
It pained Toshinori that Shinso was killed so early into his first year of high school in the alternate timeline, especially as Toshinori had every reason to believe that Shinso had the makings of a phenomenal pro hero. As such, although Shinso apparently not making it into the hero course in this current timeline granted him a bit of a measure of protection from those dangers, Toshinori was a bit annoyed that a boy who had such heroic potential was shafted here. His heroic blood driving him, the Symbol of Peace walked over to Shinso, getting his attention.
"Excuse me, young man," Toshinori said, "But where are you going?"
Shinso looked at Toshinori, saw from his long sleeved white dress shirt, red tie, tan pants held up with a belt, and black shiny dress shoes that Toshinori was obviously a member of the school staff. "...I'm trying to find the Class 1-C homeroom," Shinso replied, "I got sorted into general education." Arching a wry eyebrow, Shinso asked, "Why do you care, sir?"
Gesturing to Shinso, Toshinori asked, "You're Hitoshi Shinso, aren't you?"
Now Shinso looked surprised. "How do you know my name?"
"I'm going to be honest with you," Toshinori began, "As you might be aware, All Might just got a job here at UA as a teacher. I'm actually a secretary working for him at his hero agency. He was keeping an eye out on the students taking the entrance exams, and he had taken a bit of interest in you."
"All Might took interest in me," Shinso replied in a dry tone.
"I'm serious," Toshinori said, "He feels that you have true heroic potential. As such, when he heard you didn't get into the hero course, he confided to me that he felt it was something of an injustice."
Scoffing bitterly, Shinso said, "The practical portion of the entrance exams is biased against those whose quirks can't be used to directly strike a villain in the face. My brainwashing quirk was useless against those rob-"
"Brainwashing?" Izuku spoke up as he walked over.
Focusing on Izuku, Shinso with a hint of suspicion in his eyes said, "...Yeah. My quirk is Brainwashing. If I say something, usually asking a question, and the person I speak to responds verbally, they fall under the control of my quirk, and I can make them do most whatever I tell them to." Rolling his eyes, Shinso said, "A lot of people in my life have told me that such a power is something more along the lines of what a villain would have, but I wanted to prove those peo-"
"Your quirk has a lot of heroic potential," Izuku interrupted.
Shinso looked surprised again, but this time he focused on Izuku. "...You think I have heroic potential with a quote unquote 'villainous' quirk?"
"Your quirk isn't villainous," Izuku said, "No quirk in and of itself is evil. Any quirk can be used for villainy, but at the same time any quirk can also be used for heroism. And your quirk has a number of heroic applications. It can be used to make a villain or criminal peacefully surrender to the authorities, it can be used to make someone trying to take their own life such as by leaping from a bridge stand still long enough for them to be rescued, it can even be used to make someone trapped in the top of a burning building leap to the safety of a prepared firemen's net below. And those are just a few ideas."
This time as he looked at Izuku, Shinso looked a bit touched. "...It's not everyday someone vouches for me. And I never thought to use Brainwashing to prevent someone from committing suicide, or the get someone trapped up at the top of a burning building to jump into a fireman's net." Shinso cracked the smallest of smiles. "...Thanks. I actually have more driving me now when I work to prove I can transfer to the hero course."
"I'll see if my boss and I can put in a word," Toshinori said to Shinso, before turning to look at Izuku and said, "Anyway, you ought to get going. It's getting close, and I don't wanna hold you up."
"I'll see you after classes today, dad," Izuku replied before nodding once to Toshinori before taking off.
Seeing Izuku run off, Shinso muttered to himself, "That guy's dad works for All Might. He might get pretty popular here at UA because of that." Shinso then turned around and took off to find the Class 1-C homeroom, leaving Toshinori alone. The Symbol of Peace was going to look into helping Shinso in this timeline, as Shinso in the alternate timeline was much the same and had proven worthy to be in the hero course. But that business could wait until later. For now, Toshinori was going to get ready to do a little bit of spying.
He knew that Aizawa was going to run that quirk apprehension test, and in the previous timeline Toshinori had spied on it because Bakugo had taken part there. Toshinori was going to spy on the quirk apprehension test here, but this time it's because his step-son was going to be taking part. Toshinori felt even more nervous for Izuku's sake than he did for Bakugo's sake in the alternate timeline, and there were a myriad of reasons for why that was. But he reassured himself that Izuku was going to do well; Izuku was Toshinori's son, after all.
Step-son technically, but Izuku didn't care about that 'step-' bit.
Toshinori, in his All Might form, found a good hiding spot and was able to watch it as Aizawa led Class 1-A through the quirk apprehension test. Class 1-A, the same doomed class which, in the alternate timeline, ended up being wiped out, killed entirely. The last one in Class 1-A to die in the alternate timeline was Bakugo, the only member of Class 1-A in the alternate timeline who lived long enough to take part in the first provisional licence exams his school year was eligible for, only for Bakugo to die there when he was one of many killed when Dabi's villainous brood had attacked.
But in this current timeline, the Symbol of Peace didn't want to see any of the students over there die. The vast majority of the students in Class 1-A here were the same ones as Class 1-A's doomed counterpart in the alternate timeline; even Bakugo was there, although he looked a lot more calm overall. The only difference here was the fact that Toshinori saw that Shinso and Uraraka were not in this Class 1-A. Their spots were instead filled by Izuku and that mysterious, notably obese girl who Toshinori had seen Izuku rescue during the entrance exams.
Toshinori made a mental note to also find and help Uraraka, same as how Toshinori wanted to help Shinso.
The quirk apprehension test was taken care of, and Toshinori to his amazement saw Izuku blitz through many of the exercises. Even from where he was hiding to watch, Toshinori could tell that Izuku was doing phenomenally, and could see it that even Aizawa was impressed although the underground hero only showed this by arching a wry eyebrow in piqued interest. Eventually, all of the exercises were covered and Aizawa revealed the scores; overall, Izuku placed second among his peers in Class 1-A, with his score beaten only by the Yaoyorozu girl.
Toshinori felt blown away by how well Izuku did. He only had his quirk for about ten months while all of his classmates had their respective quirks for at least ten years each, and yet Izuku placed second overall in Class 1-A on Aizawa's quirk apprehension test. Izuku certainly did make up for the lack of time in having a quirk compared to his peers. Toshinori then saw it as Aizawa revealed he had lied about expelling the student who placed last in the quirk apprehension test as a 'logical ruse' to make the students give it their all. That had brought a measure of relief to the boy Toshinori identified as Minoru Mineta, who placed last on the quirk apprehension test.
The students were relieved for the day, to which Toshinori saw the students take off. Aizawa then walked past where Toshinori was hiding. "There's no way you can hide from me, All Might," Aizawa spoke up without even turning to face Toshinori as he looked forward while stopping to stand still, "I could tell you were spying on things the entire time, although how none of my students picked up on it as well is beyond me."
This was something Toshinori remembered from the alternate timeline; he failed to evade Aizawa's notice at this moment back there, and he failed to do so here. "I was just worried is all," Toshinori said, "I did hear you have a habit of expelling students who don't meet your standards."
"All of them have more than zero potential as pro heroes," Aizawa said, "At least when it comes to working with their quirks." Arching a wry eyebrow at the Symbol of Peace, Aizawa said, "You're just worried about your boy, aren't you." The way that the underground hero sounded made him sound more like he was making a statement that he was sure of rather than asking a question. Aizawa let off an (very rare, coming from him) amused hum of a chuckle. "There's no need for you to worry. You boy's got a very firm grasp on using his quirk. Given who he has for a parent, it's not surprising."
Toshinori nodded once in agreement. "He's both good at fitness and using his quirk AND he'll be a sharp mind in academics."
"Yes, I did get vibes from Midoriya that he'll be tops in subjects like math and science," Aizawa remarked, "It's not just great use in quirks that I want out of my students, it's also academic strengths too. That said, I get the feeling your boy will be one of my students who I'll have a high level of approval for." Looking to All Might, Aizawa went on, "You ought to be proud of your boy."
"Trust me, he's never given me a reason to not be," Toshinori replied. Turning to leave, Toshinori said, "Anyway, I need to go speak with Nezu about something. I saw both your class and Sekijiro's class, and from both I saw that a few kids who I have in mind sadly didn't make it into the hero course. I plan to go vouch for them."
"If you feel that they have what it takes, then I'm certain Nezu will consider your words," Aizawa replied, "There's one boy who caught my attention as well, but I'm not so sure if my word will carry as much weight with Nezu as yours." The underground hero then wished Toshinori luck before going off, saying he had to fill out a form to cover some important business he had in mind. Toshinori nodded in understanding before heading off to go see Nezu.
Over in Nezu's office, Toshinori now back in his base form sat down with Nezu. "Is something the matter?" Nezu asked in his polite tone.
Nodding once, Toshinori replied, "Yes, sir. There were a few kids I heard had taken the UA entrance exams, and said kids caught my attention as persons I feel would be perfect fits in the hero course. But I saw both Aizawa's class and Sekijiro's class, and failed to locate the two kids I have in mind."
"Oh?" Nezu said, "Two students you feel would be good fits in the hero course? Well I'm all ears."
Toshinori gave a single nod of thanks for Nezu's consideration before he began. "The first is a boy I had learned got into Class 1-C of the general education course here, Hitoshi Shinso."
"I'm guessing that Aizawa had put you up to recommending Shinso, huh?" Nezu replied. Toshinori had an immediate look of being genuinely confused and genuinely surprised, a look that didn't escape the quirked animal principal of UA. "...Aizawa didn't put you up to it."
"No he did not," Toshinori replied, "And what I'd like to ask now is what Aizawa has to do with it."
"He's not fond of how the practical portion of the entrance exam is biased against students with quirks that can't be used directly attack the villain robots," Nezu said, "He said that he wants to prove that quirks that can't be used directly in combat to attack an enemy still have a place in the hero course, and he feels that Shinso is the perfect student for the job to help him prove his point. Given that Aizawa's own quirk can't directly attack a target, I can see where he's coming from."
Toshinori nodded once in understanding. "Well Aizawa has good instincts." Gently shaking his head, Toshinori went on, "Anyway, the other potential student I wished to speak of is a girl named Ochaco Uraraka, who-"
"Miss Uraraka IS a student in the first year hero course," Nezu interrupted, drawing another surprised look out of the Symbol of Peace, "You mean the same Ochaco Uraraka whose parents run Uraraka Construction, the construction company you helped to revitalize in the business world over a decade ago, right?"
Nodding once, Toshinori said, "Y-Yes, she's the very same Young Uraraka that I had in mind. Nezu, you're telling me she made it into the hero course this year?"
Nezu nodded once in the affirmative. "Indeed. She did make it into the hero course."
Toshinori was about to speak up, but a knock at Nezu's door cut him off. Opening the door was Hizashi, and Toshinori saw that Izuku and the Iida boy was behind him. "Hey Nezu, sir," Hizashi said, "Two of Sho's little listeners wanna file a complaint."
"Oh?" Nezu said, his interest piqued and showing genuine interest and concern, "Well let them in."
The two boys were then let in, and Izuku was surprised to see Toshinori there. "Is there something the matter, boys?" Nezu asked.
"Sir," Iida began, "With all due respect, Midoriya and I wish to file a complaint about our classmate Mineta."
"The Mineta boy?" Toshinori said, "What did he do?"
"He... I'm not quite sure how to put this in polite words..." Izuku said, "...He's a pervert, plain and simple. Any word out of his mouth towards the girls in class was basically him saying he'd like to 'have fun' with them, aside from anything he said to Uraraka which was nothing but rudeness towards her. He also had made the girls in class feel very uncomfortable overall. Iida here and I are actually rather surprised and a little shocked that Aizawa-sensei didn't do anything about it when he had us do the quirk apprehension test earlier."
Toshinori did remember, from the alternate timeline, that Mineta was a bit on the frisky side of things, but ultimately nothing came of it, partly due to Mineta being one of the ten students killed in the alternate timeline's USJ attack. The Symbol of Peace didn't approve of Mineta's lewd nature and had plans to correct it, but ultimately couldn't do much of anything on the matter before Mineta was slain at the USJ. Maybe here, Mineta's attitude can be fixed and adjusted. Bakugo's bully-like nature got the same, so why not do so for Mineta's lewd nature?
Speaking up, Nezu said, "Oh dear, it is quite concerning to hear that one of the students at my school has acted in so reprehensible of a manner, worse yet that Aizawa apparently has done nothing about it." To the boys, Nezu said, "Don't you worry, boys. I will look into this matt-"
Nezu was cut off when the door leading into his office opened again, only this time Aizawa carrying some papers came walking in. "Nezu," Aizawa began, "I need to-" The underground hero stopped short when, looking up from his papers, he saw that Izuku, Iida, and Toshinori were also in the office with Nezu. "What are Midoriya and Iida doing here?" Aizawa asked.
"They were respectfully reporting concerns they had about the behavior of their classmate Mineta," Toshinori said, "Behavior that you apparently did nothing about." The Symbol of Peace wished that he had paid more attention to Class 1-A as a whole as they did the quirk apprehension test, rather than basically just focus on Izuku. That way, he might have seen the supposed poor behavior Mineta had done.
"Actually, I am doing something about it," Aizawa said, "I was doing something about it as I came in to see Nezu, but seeing you all here distracted me."
"You're doing something to correct Mineta's behavior, sir?" Iida asked, "Then how come you didn't do so earlier?"
"I wanted to avoid causing a scene during the quirk apprehension test," Aizawa replied. Turning to face Nezu, Aizawa walked up to him and handed him the papers he was carrying. "I wish to submit these forms and have them finalized and officiated."
Nezu looked over the forms briefly. "...I see. A bit drastic, don't you think?"
"I'm acting in accordance to what I believe All Might's zero tolerance policy for certain behavior in Japanese schools stands for," Aizawa replied, "Granted, said campaign is set up more to counter bullying and discrimination, but I'm certain that All Might will agree with me that this is also something that shouldn't be tolerated." Aizawa then asked Izuku and Iida to leave as he had sensitive info to discuss with Nezu and Toshinori. The boys respectfully left, feeling confident that something was going to be done to correct the lewd, perverted behavior shown by Mineta earlier.
Toshinori also felt that things will be corrected, but he also had a nagging worry that Aizawa may be going a bit strong, if Nezu's reaction to the forms that Aizawa had submitted to him were any indication.
As Toshinori learned soon after Izuku and Iida left, Aizawa wanted to straight up expel Mineta from UA. Toshinori was confused, citing how he thought Aizawa had no plans to expel any of his students because all of them did impressively enough for his standards in the quirk apprehension test. "Yes, they did all get a pass in the quirk apprehension test," Aizawa said, "At least a pass by my standards. As such, I'm not wanting to expel Mineta over his score in the test. I'm wanting to expel him over his lewd, perverted behavior towards the girls, especially as a few of his acts and comments count as sexual harassment."
Toshinori nodded grimly in understanding; the All Might campaign of zero tolerance is technically geared more towards stamping out bullying and discrimination, but the Symbol of Peace agreed that it should also focus on stamping out sexual harassment. He believed that Japan has a sort of devil-may-care attitude concerning dealing with stuff like that, but he feels that Japanese schools ought to start taking a more USA-style approach to dealing with sexual harassment cases. Americans, from what Toshinori is familiar with on the subject matter, take such cases VERY seriously.
Nezu nodded in understanding to how Toshinori and Aizawa felt, and approved of expelling Minoru Mineta from UA. It pained Toshinori that Mineta's pro hero career was cut short before it even had a chance to grow, but he kind of brought it on himself. Additionally, a part of Toshinori was actually happy for Mineta that he had just gotten expelled from UA; that meant that Mineta was guaranteed to avoid death at the USJ, where he died in the alternate timeline. The Symbol of Peace also intended to look into Mineta personally to check up on him, make sure he doesn't commit suicide over being expelled from school (more common in Japan that what Toshinori would like for there to be).
With plans to check up on a boy who had escaped his possible murder at the USJ, Toshinori left UA for the day, his heart a bit heavy but also feeling hope that Mineta at least won't be killed in a villain attack.
Eventually, Toshinori arrived home at the house where he lived with Inko and Izuku. Due to his income (he's All Might after all), Toshinori had for him and his family a large, spacious home comparable to the home that the Bakugos live in, in terms of overall size and space. There, Toshinori sat at the the table with his family as he heard Izuku go on about his first day in UA's hero course.
"Aizawa-sensei does seem like a stern, firm type," Izuku said, "But he's also proven to be a good man with the best intentions in mind for my classmates and I. He also seemed impressed with how well I did in the quirk apprehension test that he had all of us do in class today."
"Really, sweetie?" Inko said, "How well did you do?"
"I placed second in class overall," Izuku explained, "I even outdid Kacchan, which I'm still a little surprised about. Only this one girl in my class, Yaoyorozu, got an overall better score than me."
"Oh, so Katsuki got into UA too," Inko said, "Not all that surprising, he always did do well in school, and he loved boasting about his quirk." Smiling gently, Inko went on, "Although not only do you yourself have a quirk sweetie, but I'm actually a little surprised that you're such a late bloomer. Not, of course, do I complain, because I'm just so happy to see that you can finally go after your dream of becoming a pro hero." Toshinori nodded along in agreement, and he took note of Izuku using the name Kacchan, which he learned is Izuku's nickname for Bakugo.
Continuing the conversation, Inko asked, "So sweetie, did you make any friends today?"
"Oh, Ochaco is in class with me," Izuku said, "And I also befriended a boy named Iida. He was a bit stern towards me when we first met at the entrance exams, but that was because he thought I was being rude to the other exam takers. He actually apologized to me for how he treated me when we first met. He's a bit wound up I will admit, but I'm certain of it that Iida is a wholly good person."
"Oh, it's nice to hear someone was apologizing to you for prior rudeness towards you," Inko said, "And it's great to hear that the Uraraka girl also got into UA."
"I remember the Urarakas," Toshinori said, "My boss All Might had helped to revitalize their failing construction company, and now I hear they're top in the field here in Japan. They also do various charity works as their way of giving back after All Might had given to them. They're certainly paying it forward, which All Might approves of."
"Oh, I actually took pictures of Iida and Ochaco to show mom," Izuku said as he took his phone out. Toshinori and Inko both looked at the photos of Iida and Uraraka that Izuku took. The first was a full body photo of Iida standing next to a desk in a classroom; Toshinori remembered seeing Iida before, given that the glasses wearing boy was with Izuku when he went to see Nezu. Toshinori also took note of Iida supposedly being stern to Izuku at first over a misunderstanding but then apologizing to Izuku about it; Izuku had a point on Iida being a tad wound up but still a good person.
Then Izuku showed Toshinori and Inko the photo of Uraraka, and she also stood next to a desk in a classroom. Toshinori was rather surprised to see Uraraka in this photo, given that she's the mysterious notably obese girl Toshinori had seen. The Symbol of Peace did not expect the Uraraka girl to be so fat; Uraraka in the photo that Izuku had on his phone looked to weigh at least two-hundred and thirty kilograms. What had especially surprised Toshinori about Uraraka's size is the fact that, in the alternate timeline, she was rather slender. Did something different happen in the current timeline that didn't in the alternate timeline to result in Uraraka being fat here?
Toshinori realized from this drastic difference between the two timelines that, if he wasn't careful, he could STILL cause things to get messed up, and may even see to the rise of Dabi's Crew in this timeline. That was something the Symbol of Peace wanted to avoid.
The next day at UA, Toshinori in his All Might form went to Class 1-A, as he was going to help Aizawa run an exercise for the students. This exercise, the heroes versus villains exercise, saw the class of twenty divided into ten teams of two, with five of the pairs designated as 'hero' teams and the other five pairs designated as 'villain' teams. The villain teams had to guard a fake (i.e. made of paper mache) bomb, and the hero teams had to get in and stop them. The heroes won if they caught both villains or touched the bomb in the time limit, and the villains won if they caught both heroes, or ran out the clock while keeping the heroes from getting to the bomb.
It was much the same as it was in the alternate timeline. Toshinori didn't remember much of the pairs in the alternate timeline, but he did remember that Bakugo was on a hero team that won (Toshinori didn't remember who Bakugo's teammate was though, nor could Toshinori remember the members of the villain team that lost to Bakugo). When Toshinori got to class, he saw that the seat that was made vacant by the expelling of Mineta was already filled, and with Shinso no less. "Yeah, Nezu approved of Shinso's transfer to the hero course," Aizawa explained when Toshinori asked about it, "Partly due to your recommendation, partly due to how Nezu wants to keep hero course classes at max capacity, and partly due to how it's only been a day so not much will have occurred yet."
"I see," Toshinori said. Turning to regard Shinso, the Symbol of Peace said, "I'm glad to see that the heroic potential I saw in you has been recognized, Young Shinso! I bet my secretary Yagi will also be amused to hear it!"
Shinso nodded once in thanks to Japan's number one hero. "I'm... actually rather surprised someone of your reputation actually vouched for me, sir. Thanks."
With little else popping up, the Class 1-A students got into their hero costumes and went to the training grounds for the heroes versus villains exercise. The costumes of the Class 1-A students were the same as they were in the alternate timeline, aside from Shinso who wore a UA gym uniform (he didn't have a costume yet due to the nature of how he got into the hero course in this timeline), Mineta who wasn't here due to being expelled from UA in the current timeline, and Izuku who wasn't in this class in the alternate timeline. Izuku's costume was mostly green, with a metal mouth mask worn down around his neck, and he wore his Air Force Gloves.
Aside from that, everyone else's costumes looked the same; even Uraraka's costume looked the same although here her costume was sized to be able to fit over the very considerable form that she had here in the current timeline. Once Toshinori ran a roll call and confirmed all twenty students in this Class 1-A was accounted for, he proceeded to draw lots to determine the hero teams and villain teams for this exercise. He would draw two names from a box he had prepared, then draw a lot from a second box that would say hero or villain. This was to truly make sure things were random.
As a result of wanting to make things as randomized as possible, Toshinori felt his heart skip a beat when he drew Izuku's name and Shinso's name but drew a villain slip for them from the second box. Toshinori then drew Uraraka and Yaoyorozu and they also got a villain slip. Then Toshinori drew Bakugo's and Todoroki's names and they were the first team to get a hero slip. After that there was Hagakure and Ojiro as heroes, Ashdo and Jiro as heroes, Asui and Tokoyami as villains, Aoyama and Koda as heroes, Kirishima and Iida as villains, Sero and Kaminari as heroes, and Sato and Shoji as villains.
Toshinori felt that the matches were going to be interesting here. The Symbol of Peace didn't remember the matches in the alternate timeline very well; all that he was able to remember was the fact that Bakugo was on a winning hero team with someone Toshinori was certain was NOT Todoroki unlike here; Toshinori felt that Bakugo in the alternate timeline was partnered with the Kirishima boy. That said, Toshinori was looking forward to seeing how events were going to unfold here, although a small part of him was still worried about Izuku being on one of the villain teams here.
Toshinori felt that it was a ghost of the alternate timeline trying to remind him about what he was given the second chance to prevent. Toshinori prayed that he would succeed and be able to keep Izuku on the straight and narrow, even though the Symbol of Peace didn't forget that keeping his step-son good was only part of what all he had to do to prevent the current timeline from getting the bad future as a result.
END, CHAPTER FOUR
Author's notes;
This chapter sees the first bits of Class 1-A's first days as students at UA, focusing mostly on the first day although the second day with the heroes versus villains exercise is also touched on a bit. Here there are a few changes from the alternate timeline that sprung up due to Toshinori tweaking things here and there. There will be more changes as things progress, making Toshinori realize that he HAS to be careful; the current timeline is his second chance, and if he messes up like in the alternate timeline, then he may not get another second chance. Let's see if he can pull it off.
