It was the next day, and Azura woke up feeling pretty happy. She was happy mostly because she had not been in trouble with Optimus the day before, and that he was understanding of the whole situation. And Ratchet intended on sitting her down to do at least a thirty minute to an hour lesson on Cybertronian. Being a Sunday, Jack had voiced that he wanted to join in. But Ratchet told him that he can watch as he wanted to focus on Azura's education. He did know that Jack and Raf were interested in learning, while Miko did not particularly care. Besides, she apparently had a history report to work on to hand in later in the week, but she hasn't been working on it very hard. It was clear spending time with the autobots has been distracting her in regards to school. But they still needed school.
Right now, Azura was painting her second dragon image, and had decided to paint with her fingers instead of using the brushes. She found she was able to make the painting look smooth by using her hands, and she did not mind getting her hands covered in paint. It was something to do for the morning after being fed and waiting for the bots to bring the humans to the base. And Ratchet had decided to wait for Azura to spend a bit of time doing something she wanted before getting straight into education. He felt that was the better way for her to spend her time.
Optimus was watching her paint the image. She had mixed some of the paint, and she was currently painting the first layer of the image. Azura was aware that he was watching, but he had not said anything to her. She knew he was aware of her ancestor, and she loved to draw and paint dragons anyway, so it was very easy for her to do. Plus, Optimus did not know she was painting an image of what she believed she would look like in her dragon form. So he simply just knew that she was painting an image of a dragon, and that was it.
"At least you know that we have paint on Cybertron," Optimus commented with a smirk, making Azura grin as she remembered the story Ratchet mentioned about Bumblebee when he was young. "Though I will admit, if you do happen to deliberately spill paint or paint over the walls, I certainly won't be happy. Though I know you are unlikely to do that."
"Of course not. I am not that silly." Azura looked at her hands and looked at him with a curious expression. "Though I have paint on my hands and some has dripped onto the floor…would that kind of count?"
Optimus shook his head. "No. It just means a little bit of cleaning, but that is nothing to be concerned about. Besides, you aren't being silly about it either. You are using your skill to create something nice, and if there is a little bit of mess, it is fine. I'll make sure your hands are clean before Ratchet starts his education with you."
"I…I am kind of nervous. I am so used to the human way of school…" Azura pondered on it a little and turned to Optimus. "Is there something I should expect from Ratchet? Or am I being too nervous for nothing?"
"You are indeed being a tad too nervous, Azura. Ratchet is not a horrible teacher. I understand you think otherwise because of the fact that he can be a bit…strict is not the word I would use…but he is very serious. But you already know how kind he is towards you, Azura." Optimus smiled at her as she seemed to relax a little. "So you need not worry. Plus, you already seem to understand the alphabet just fine. He may get you to revise that before he has you write out sentences. I will be there, but I won't interfere."
"Okay." Azura turned to the painting again. She currently had painting the silver part of the body, but she needed it to dry. "Um…I think I am done with it for now. I need to let it dry before I continue." She looked at her hands and placed down the paint palette down and looked up at Optimus. "I guess…" She didn't get to finish as Optimus had already been prepared as he opened his chassis and pulled out a cloth. When he had seen she was using her hands to paint, he had walked away to get a damp cloth prepared to clean the sparkling's hands. Azura could not help but giggle a little. "I guess you were a little ahead of me."
"And I see the sparkling has made a bit of a mess over here," Ratchet comments with a smile as he approached them. "At least it is contained." He looked at Azura as he watched Optimus clean her hands. "I think we should make a start shortly. I know the humans wanted to watch, but I think it is best to not have an audience."
"True." Azura looked at Optimus as he finished cleaning her hands and she looked at them before smiling at him. "Thanks, daddy." She looked back at the mess she had made. It really was not that much, but it was still a mess. "I guess I'll help clean up." She walked over to the palette to pick up before making her way to the stairs. Optimus began cleaning up the paint from the platform floor. "I'll go and rinse this off, and that should allow enough time before we can start, Ratchet."
Ratchet watched as she reached the bottom of the stairs and made her way to the other platforms. He knew she would be heading up to the catwalks to make use of the bathroom sink to rinse the palette. "That is completely fine, Azura. Just know that it won't be intensive. I plan on making it fun, so I don't bore you to death. From what I understand, humans schools can be mundane for a lot of kids, and I don't want to recreate that kind of setting here."
"I mean, I wouldn't exactly mind since it is the only kind of school I know. But I guess I understand, given the fact of me being an infant sparkling." She shrugged a bit as she made her way up the stairs of the main platform. "So I guess I am interested in knowing what you plan on doing. Daddy says I am doing very well…" Ratchet glanced at Optimus who nodded affirmatively, even though Ratchet knew that Optimus would certainly say that about his own sparkling. "So I hope that you agree with him."
Ratchet shrugged as she looked at him curiously. "I really cannot confirm or deny that at this time, Azura. But I will say that you should just do your best. I am not going to grade you, I just want to see where you are at. You need to realize that until you are much, much older, you are only learning the basics. And there is no way I am going through our laws of physics and maths with you at this stage, you would likely get too overwhelmed by their information."
Azura was happy to hear that, so she decided to hurry and run up the stairs to the catwalks to make her way to the bathroom. She was feeling less nervous now that Ratchet has informed her that today was basically to see where she was at and help her. And the fact it was not serious, she could easily relax. She did know that Jack and Raf may not be too happy about not being able to watch and listen in, but Ratchet did intend this to be for her alone.
Once she rinsed the palette, Azura made her way back downstairs quickly. She was able to skip a few of the stairs as she ran down them since she was taller, and the added length in her legs allowed her to skip a few stairs each time. She did make sure to be careful as she didn't want to trip, fall and be instructed not to do that again. She did not need them to have another spark attack like the day before.
Both Optimus and Ratchet were waiting patiently for her as she ran down the stairs. She looked up at them with a big smile. "Alright, I am almost ready. Just one more…HEY!" Azura gasped as Optimus reached down to take the palette from her. "Daddy, I could have done it myself. That palette's fragile, and your fingers are big and strong…so…be careful…"
"I will not break it, Azura." He moved the palette up to her art platform and placed it onto a desk. "As you can tell, I have not damaged it. Now is the time to focus on Cybertronian for Ratchet."
Azura sighed and turned to Ratchet. "Alright, well…I guess I am ready."
"Follow me." Azura could not help but think Ratchet has set up a classroom type room for her. She was actually very curious about it. "I think this will only be about thirty minutes, Azura. It is mostly seeing where you are at, and helping you to recognize and read the Cybertronian letters and words better. I assume you still look back to the English alphabet for aid."
She tensed a little before she nodded. "Yeah…kind of…I can read some words…I can write my own name, for example. And I can also write daddy's name, and Jack and your name in Cybertronian. I haven't practiced anyone else's name yet."
"Names are a good start." Ratchet seemed happy to know that, but he would test her on that very shortly. "There's plenty of time to perfect spelling."
Azura knew that and she was excited and nervous at the same time now. She did not know if she would have to spell out words, but she guessed she would have to. She glanced around curiously as she wondered where Ratchet was leading her. He soon turned left and walk through a door. When she looked inside, she chuckled a little as it was a little bit like a classroom set up. There was a large touch screen with a desk for her to sit at.
But she also noticed other things in the room. They were on a shelf in the room, and they seemed to be things that Ratchet had to help her learn. They could be puzzle, maybe an escape room as it has once been suggested to Ratchet. Whatever they were, Azura didn't quite recognize them. There wasn't many other items in the room, so Ratchet had kept it simple.
"Okay, so there isn't a great lot in here, but I don't want you to get overwhelmed. The first thing I want you to do...Ratchet gestures to the screen and picked up what looked like a touch screen pen. "Write out the Cybertronian alphabet for me."
Azura looked at the one as Ratchet held it to her. She grabbed it as she approached the screen. "Um...the English alphabet...do you have that for reference?"
"Nope, not this time. It is better to memorize the letters without falling back onto the human language, Azura." The girl wasn't too happy about it, but she approached the screen and took a deep intake. "Do not rush yourself, take your time and write it out. I won't correct anything for you as you write. Once you finished, I will show you if you have made a mistake, and help you correct it."
Azura nodded as she understood. She was a bit uncertain, but she raised the pen and began to write out the alphabet. She realized that without the English alphabet to help guide her, it was harder to remember the Cybertronian alphabet. So she took a bit longer to remember the letters than she had hoped. But she knew that she could not use the English alphabet as a crutch all the time. There were some letters that she definitely remembered better than others, but now that she had to remember the alphabet without help, it was harder.
Optimus remained in the corner of the room as he watched Azura write out the alphabet. He smiled as he saw she was getting it right for now, but he was intrigued on how well she would remember the alphabet. She has done a good job, but he was aware she still relied on the English alphabet to make sure she was getting Cybertronian right, and he did feel as though she needed to start letting it go. But he wouldn't force her since she was still so very young.
Azura hummed a little as she reached halfway through the alphabet and paused to stare at the screen before she was about to continue when she heard voices outside the room. She recognized Arcee, Bumblebee, Bulkhead, Jack, Miko and Raf, and she smiled a little, but she saw Ratchet giving her an expression that told her he did not want he to get distracted, so she looked back and she continued writing, though it was hard to not get distracted.
Though the door opened and she turned to see Arcee, Bulkhead and Bumblebee. They did not step through the door as they could see Ratchet's unhappy expression. But Jack and Rafael walk into the room while Miko just took a peak and quickly decided she didn't want to watch. So she walked over to Bulkhead and they walk away to go and do something else. But Jack and Raf were curious about the room as they look around.
"It would have been a lot more polite if you knocked," Ratchet said bluntly, folding his arms as he frowned at the humans and glancing at both Arcee and Bumblebee. "Azura was in the middle of concentration, and you successfully distracted her."
"Sorry, Ratchet, we didn't mean to." Raf glanced at the screen Azura was standing by. She had stopped writing down the alphabet and Raf smiled at her. "I promise we won't say anything. We just want to watch…"
"Actually…" Azura looked at them with a smile. "I did not mind that you wanted to watch before…but now…" She immediately felt bad as both Jack and Raf were immediately sad as they realized what she was saying. "I realize that I need to concentrate. And…having others watching me, aside from daddy and Ratchet…"
"I get it." Jack walked over to Saphira with a small smile and placed his hand on her shoulder. "You changed your mind because now you are here, it is a little more intimidating than you first thought." She nodded as that was very true. "Alright, Raf and I will go and do something else. We have a bit of homework to do ourselves anyway. I realized I was a bit behind, and I don't want my mother getting upset at me."
Azura was happy that he wasn't too upset, and he understood. "Thanks, Jack. I will be finished here soon, so we can do something else later."
"Sounds good to me." Jack turned away from Azura and walked over to Arcee. "Guess you were right."
"Of course, I was. I warned you that it was best to not watch Azura while she is studying." Arcee sighed and looked at Ratchet who was still unhappy that Azura had been interrupted. "I'll make sure this won't happen again."
"It has better not." Ratchet looked down and saw that Azura was going over the letters she had already written, likely to remind herself what was next. "Take your time, Azura. You have half of the alphabet written down so far."
Azura flinched a little and felt a tad irritated as Ratchet made her lose her train of thought. She heard Raf leave the room as well without saying anything, and it was just her, Ratchet and Optimus again. Azura did not want to say that Ratchet had just annoyed her, so she simply restarted as she began to go back through the letters she had already written down. She ended up singing the alphabet song in her head to help her. Once she remembered what letter was next, she finally resumed writing it down. Azura felt happy that she was able to pull herself together and proceed with writing the alphabet.
Optimus himself was happy that she was able to get herself back on track. He could tell that her processor was quick to remember and it was allowing to finish off the alphabet. He hoped that she wasn't feeling nervous now that the humans had interrupted her. She did not seem nervous from his observation, but she could be nervous internally. But from what he could see, she was getting the alphabet correct. And he knew she would likely need a confidence boost to know that she can ready the Cybertronian alphabet without the English alphabet as a guide.
Ratchet himself was very impressed with what she has written so far as well. He said nothing, or made any kind of expression other than keeping a relaxed face if Azura did look up at him. He knew she did not need to be upset if she thought she had done something wrong. At her age, she would actually be considered advanced for a sparkling. And he knew that being in human education attributed to that fact. Azura would likely have no problem learning Cybertronian math and physics when she is much older.
Azura wrote the last letter and she looked at all the letters, making sure she had them all there, and she hoped it was in the correct order too. If the alphabet was in the wrong order, she knew that Ratchet would point it out to her. But so far, it seemed fine. She looked over the alphabet a few times, making sure each letter looked correct. She felt like she was right, but she was not a hundred percent sure.
She finally looked up at Ratchet curiously. "So…uh…what…what do you think about…did I get the alphabet correct? I feel like it is, but…I am not sure…"
Ratchet smiled at her as he crouched down. "You should be proud of yourself, Azura. You did not make a mistake." She widened her optics in shock and looked at the screen as she had not been expecting that. "I think you have underestimated your ability to understand our alphabet. And it is in the correct order." Azura smiled as she realized that she was right, and she could not help but jump up and down excitedly before throwing herself at Ratchet to hug him. The medic let out a soft chuckle as he hugged her in return. "You are most welcome, Azura. You need to have a bit more confidence in yourself. You are a lot smarter than you think. I would consider you rather advance for your age."
"Really?" Azura looked at his optics in shock as she did not think she was. "I…I thought…well I guess I am a little ahead thanks to school…" She chuckled a little before she moved away from Ratchet. "Well…" She looked at the screen again as she look over the alphabet, and she realized Ratchet was right. She knew which letter was what now. "What do you want me to do now?"
"Write a short sentence. But first, erase the alphabet." Azura was a tad disheartened by that, but she used the erase tool to clear the letters so she could make a start. "Actually, write three simply sentences. After that, there's a game that you can play that I've modified for you to enjoy."
"A game?" Azura looked up at Ratchet in surprise. "So there are computer games on Cybertron?" He nodded affirmatively. "Oh, that's unexpected." She chuckled a little before she looked back at the screen as she thought about what sentences she should write. "That I have a hunch that your computer games are completely different from human computer games. Probably more for educational purposes."
"You would be correct, Azura. The games we have are more for education than fun like the games of this world. Though I do see why humans have created the games, as it has given a form of entertainment." Ratchet smiled as Azura began to write the first sentence, and she seemed a lot more confident than she had been before. He was glad that she was feeling more confident about herself as he knew she was fully capable of doing it. "I can promise that this game will not be boring. It will be fun. It will be a simple letter game."
Azura had no idea what kind of game Ratchet had in mind, but she was curious about it. She was not sure how it will help her with Cybertronian, but Ratchet seemed confident. Maybe he saw how well Wheeljack's idea worked with her, he decided he should take a page out of Wheeljack's book and apply it. That would be completely fine as people did learn faster and better when they are having fun, and that would also apply to Cybertronians as well.
Ratchet did not interrupt Azura as she continued to write out her first sentence. He watched her write it our, and he smiled as he read what she had written. I love being a part of this family. He gestured to Optimus to see what Azura had written, and Optimus leaned a little as she moved onto the next sentence, and Optimus smiled. He was very happy she loves being a part of the autobot family. With how long her early years have been, this would easily be a dream come true for her.
Azura knew that the autobots would see what she has written, so she did not say anything to them. Though it seemed like she was getting the words right, as Ratchet has not said anything. If they were reading the sentence, she knew that they would be very happy, and feel warmth in their sparks knowing that Azura felt that way about them. It was no secret that Azura loved them deeply. It took a long time for her to even develop love for her family, and there was no way she would lose that love now.
The next sentence she written was just a simpler sentence. With wings, I can fly. It was not significant at all, as it was just another sentence. Then the final sentence she had written was just another simple sentence. A rainbow painting the blue sky. Azura stepped back and looked up at Ratchet as she saw he was still watching. And he had a smile on his face as he read her sentences.
"I guess I can tell that I got the words right, right?" Azura asked as she held her hands behind her back nervously.
"Yes, you do." Ratchet chuckled a little as Azura jumped around excitedly. "Now it is time for the game that I promise." Ratchet turned and grabbed a small screen and began to set it up. "It is a rather simple game. Your character in this game is race through a long tunnel, and your job is to drive through the correct letters of the alphabet. If run into the wrong letters, the character gets damaged and the vision gets blurry."
"Ooh!" Azura was immediately curious as she waited excitedly beside Ratchet. "That sounds very fun!" Ratchet lowered the screen to her and she grabbed it. Azura saw that it was indeed a basic game for that. And the character she could choose was between a mech and a femme, and she chose the femme who transforms into a car. "This is going to be interesting to play."
Azura sat down and crossed her legs as she began to play the game. She quickly realized that this game wouldn't be easy, as she drove through the correct letters of the alphabet at first, but then she began running into incorrect letters. And with a point system in the game, she quickly became interested and addicted to the game itself. Azura became aware of the higher scores in the game, and she decided that it would be a nice way to challenge herself and continue playing the game.
Optimus and Ratchet were both rather happy that Azura took to the game very quickly, and she was already concentrating and enjoying the game. There were a few times she got frustrated over the game, but that was only natural. Ratchet was pleased as it would allow her to remember the alphabet easier in a fun setting, and it would make life easier for her if she happened to get separated from them, and she needed to send a message to them. But both Ratchet and Optimus would soon realize that Azura might become too addicted to the game itself, especially now she felt the need and desire to beat the high scores in the game.
