"Isn't it time you gave up?" Drake asked kindly as JJ slumped into his desk chair, looking lost and defeated. "Dee just isn't interested; if he was, he'd be nicer to you."
"He's just playing hard to get," JJ insisted. He'd leaped up to greet the object of his affections, only to have Dee snap at him to leave him alone.
"No one plays hard to get for two years, JJ. Face it, you're never gonna win Dee's heart, or any other part of him. The harder you try to make him want you, the more he's gonna push you away."
"So you're saying I should let him come to me?" JJ hadn't considered that option.
"No, I'm saying you should stop wasting your time trying to win someone who'll never be yours."
JJ threw a shocked look Drake's way. "How can you say that? I thought we were friends!"
"We are, which is why I'm saying what nobody else will. You're a great guy, JJ, you deserve to be happy with someone who appreciates you for who you are, but that's never going to be Dee."
Drake might as well not have said anything, because JJ had stopped listening. Until a few minutes ago, he would have said Drake was the truest, most loyal friend he'd ever had, but now he was experiencing the bitter sting of betrayal.
How could anyone, especially his own partner, tell him to give up his pursuit of love and happiness? If Drake was any kind of friend at all, he should be supportive, reassuring, encouraging, instead of ripping JJ's dreams so cruelly to shreds.
Didn't Drake understand how much he loved Dee? That he would never be complete without the love of his life at his side? He'd never trust Drake Parker again!
