Dee stopped at the gate, one hand on the latch, listening, a frown creasing his forehead.

"What're you waiting for?" Ryo asked behind him. He and Dee were going door-to-door, interviewing the neighbors of their latest homicide victim, hoping that someone might have seen or heard something that would provide them with a lead. The answer he got from his partner wasn't anything he'd been expecting.

"Chickens!"

"What?"

"They've got chickens; I can hear them clucking!"

"So?"

"Have you forgotten what happened the last time we went somewhere that had chickens? I was assaulted with one!"

To be fair, it hadn't been the chicken's fault; its owner had used it as a weapon, hitting Dee with it twice before trying to make a run for it.

"Oh. Right. Although technically I think that was a rooster, bred for illegal cockfights."

"Whatever. Can't blame me for bein' a bit wary, can ya?"

"I guess not, but most people who keep chickens have them for egg production rather than for defence," Ryo pointed out, leaning past Dee. "Anyway, I think they must be in the backyard, probably in a pen, so we should be okay." He pushed the gate open and led the way up the front walk.

Dee followed, keeping a close eye on his surroundings, but when he didn't see so much as a stray chicken feather he relaxed.

The owner of the house led them through to the kitchen where she made coffee and answered their questions about her neighbour across the road.

"It's sad. I didn't know him well, but we spoke occasionally, and he seemed like a nice man: quiet, always polite, well dressed. I think he worked in an office, but I couldn't tell you where; I never asked. Still, I can't imagine why anyone would want to hurt him." She smiled at Dee, catching the way he kept looking out the kitchen window at the chickens scratching about in their pen. "Are you interested in chickens, Detective Laytner?"

"Just seems strange seein' them in a backyard in Queens of all places."

"I bake a lot, so it's convenient to have eggs readily available. Would you like some? I give the surplus to my neighbours…"

"Well, that was a better chicken encounter than your last one," Ryo said with a grin as they left with a dozen fresh eggs.

"Chickens have their good points," Dee agreed.
